Occupy Wall Street protester: I want my college tuition paid because that’s what I want; Update: Landlord asks cops to clear Zuccotti Park — for cleaning

posted at 8:16 pm on October 12, 2011 by Allahpundit

An instant classic from Charles Cooke at NRO, and also the two most excruciating minutes you’ll spend today. The lingering question: How representative is our inarticulate proletarian hero here of the rest of the commune in Zuccotti Park? On the one hand, he’s mercifully dogma-free. No impromptu lectures on socialist theory or digressions about the Jews who control the banks; he just wants some money, so can you give him some money, please? On the other hand, “give me some money” is socialist theory, basically. He’s an ideologue waiting to happen, he’s just not quite there yet.

Either way, the center-leftists at TNR have seen enough. An early sign that OWS has become too fringe-y to make establishment Democrats comfortable, or just further evidence that those darned Zionist hawks under Martin Peretz’s wing are traitors to the cause?

[I]t is just not the protesters’ apparent allergy to capitalism and suspicion of normal democratic politics that should raise concerns. It is also their temperament. The protests have made a big deal of the fact that they arrive at their decisions through a deliberative process. But all their talk of “general assemblies” and “communiqués” and “consensus” has an air of group-think about it that is, or should be, troubling to liberals. “We speak as one,” Occupy Wall Street stated in its first communiqué, from September 19. “All of our decisions, from our choices to march on Wall Street to our decision to camp at One Liberty Plaza were decided through a consensus process by the group, for the group.” The air of group-think is only heightened by a technique called the “human microphone” that has become something of a signature for the protesters. When someone speaks, he or she pauses every few words and the crowd repeats what the person has just said in unison. The idea was apparently logistical—to project speeches across a wide area—but the effect when captured on video is genuinely creepy.

These are not just substantive complaints. They also beg the strategic question of whether the protesters will help or hurt the cause of liberalism. After all, even if the protesters are not liberals themselves, isn’t it possible that they could play a constructive role in forcing Americans to pay attention to important issues such as inequality and crony capitalism? Perhaps. But we are hard-pressed to believe that most Americans will look at these protests, with their extreme anti-capitalist rhetoric, and conclude that the fate of the Dodd-Frank legislation—currently the best liberal hope for improving democratically regulated capitalism—is more crucial than they had previously thought.

New numbers check: A Reuters/Ipsos poll of adults finds 38 percent view OWS favorably compared to just 24 percent who don’t, but a Rasmussen poll of likely voters finds just 36 percent view the movement favorably compared to 41 percent who don’t. No wonder TNR is nervous. Imagine what the numbers would look like if the media wasn’t hip-deep in the tank for Johnny Paymytuition here.

Since I started the post by trying to distinguish among protesters, let’s end it that way too. Exit question: Who exactly is planning its marches? Grassroots members or someone else?

Update: Everybody out — for a day.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited the site of the ongoing “Occupy Wall Street” demonstration in Lower Manhattan today and informed protesters that the private park where they are staying will be cleaned on Friday…

In a statement, Deputy Mayor for Operations Cas Holloway said the cleaning will be done in stages and that demonstrators can return to the cleaned areas, so long as they follow rules set by Brookfield Properties, the owner of Zuccotti Park.

“The mayor is a strong believer in the First Amendment and believes that the protesters have a right to continue to protest. At the same time, the last three weeks have created unsanitary conditions and considerable wear and tear on the park,” Holloway said in the statement. “This situation is not in the best interests of the protesters, residents or the City.”

I recommend reading the letter from Brookfield to NYPD chief Ray Kelly, as it doesn’t mince words about the “unsanitary and unsafe” conditions in the park and the hundreds of complaints they’ve gotten from locals about the various types of crime happening in plain sight, from drug use to “lewdness” to harassment of passersby. New suspense for New Yorkers: Which park will have the privilege of hosting this vanguard of the Democratic base while Zuccotti gets a very thorough power-washing?

I’d like to know who is going to pay for the cleaning? Since it is a privately owned park, or at least privately owned to the extent that Brookfield can allow these people to stay their, I hope that Bloomfield is going to pay for the clean up.

These LibTard OWS “spontaneous protestors” are clearly affected from drinking all that KORPORATE WATER(tm) bottled by the George Soros World Galactic Corporation.

All kidding aside, it was hilarious watching LibTard politicians like Pelosi, Bloomberg, Obama, etc giving speeches embracing & encouraging these lazy longhaired filthy hippies.

As more & more American voters peer past the Mainstream Media’s romanticization of the OWS (bowel) movement, the LibTard politicians will become inextricably entwined with OWS and feel the wrath of the American voter come Nov 2012.

Is this a surprise here? gimme gimme gimme gimme is the theme of those interlopers.

How many here at HotAir paid their own way through school? My dad was laid off from his fast food restaurant manager gig in 1973 when I graduated and trust me, they did not pay franchise managers all that much at the time. My mom was a teacher, back before the teacher unions began to break the bank of the public treasure.

I worked my butt off for the grades to get a scholarship that helped with my out of state Purdue tuition and paid for the rest of the tuition, room, board, books from my co-op job and cleaning dorm bathrooms and hallways on the weekends while at school. Fortunately, it was a girls’ side of the dorm, so the bathroom duty was not that bad compared to the guys’ side of the dorm.

Maybe I should have declared myself to be an illegal so I could have gotten in state tuition and saved myself 80% of my tuition fees each year!!!! My first car? A used hand me down from my parents, it was 5 years old, I was a senior at Purdue and they only handed it off to me to avoid driving me 250 miles to school each time I had to head back to the dorm. It came complete with IOU and I paid them for it monthly when I graduated.

I am deeply grateful I worked my butt off while in school, because I was spared the pain of a school loan. However, my MBA tuition was an entirely different matter. I paid that sucker back for years and years and years.

They want their college tuition paid for.

They want to be admitted to the college of their choice, no matter what. No matter whether they are qualified or not, or have the proper grades or not, or graduated high school or not, or that they are richer than all the Oil Sheiks, Saudi Kings, and George Soros, or all the Entertainment industry left wing celebrities or not.

After that they want to be graduated with a perfect grade point average, with honors, whether they’ve attended class or not, or whether they’ve completed the courses or not.

Then they want a top notch, high paying job, no matter that they earned it, or are qualified for it or not.

Then they want to be paid, for life, no matter whether the show up to work, or never show up for work.

They also want all their medical, dental, and all other expenses, including utility bills, mortgage, car, auto insurance, travel expenses, vacations, food, et al, paid for, no matter they have millions of dollars already given to them whether they’ve earned it or not.

They also want you and me to shut the F*@# up, because we are stupid Conservatives with stupid values, and we are mean, evil meanies who should be beheaded, blown up, shot, die a painful death, or whatever, because we are racist rich people who want people to starve to death and die, even though we are not rich, not racist, and don’t want people to starve to death or die.

Leftist-Liberal mentality is a mental disorder, a terminal disease.

I wonder why Brookfield has not simply filed a trespassing complaint on all of them. The park is, after all, private property – not public.

A couple of reasons…one of their companies, under the same corporation, got a big subsidy recently for green energy production and Bloomberg’s honey is on their board. Brookfield is a big Dem/Liberal supporter. Basically I think they thought they could support something that would fit their agenda and the protesters would be neat and clean like the Tea Partiers. Neither one worked out for them.

You know what OWS is? Immature adults playing at political activism, in the same way that children play house. They don’t really know what they are doing, and are just imitating what they think they have seen others do.

Count to 10 on October 13, 2011 at 9:52 AM

According to the letter, I think that Brookfield should initiate the re-wiring of those underground lights.
With all of the permits, union requirements, etc, that could take a good, long time !!!!

Does that guy kinda look like the illegitimate child of DWS and ChuckU? What an upbringing he had. Mommie and daddie can’t afford him anymore and now he wants me to pay for his schooling!? Get a job with a large corp, a lot of them have college programs to better their employees. Join the Army, they pay towards school, too.

Kissmygrits on October 13, 2011 at 10:20 AM

Hey kid, ever since Obummer nationalized student loans I AM ALREADY paying your tuition NOW, even if your old man pays Uncle Sam (or Aunt Sallie Mae) later. Two years ago a greedy capitalist pig private banker could pay your tuition. So go back to college and learn something and quit kvetchin’ while I pay your tuition.

$ugar Daddy Taxpayer.

These hobos wouldn’t pay to clean up the mess in that park – heck they can’t even pay for a donut when they take advantage of the restrooms at the local businesses.

The more I see of these protests, and the ongoing asinine comments from these ‘protesters’, I think of what Frank Zappa mockingly wrote in his song Teen-age Wind

“FREE IS WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR NOTHING
OR DO NOTHING
WE WANT TO BE FREE
FREE AS THE WIND…”

This from some flea-infested kossack at Occupy Wall Street:

“This movement needs hot food to sustain itself,” one of the women said, adding that attempts to find donated space had so far failed to produce a long-term, conveniently located solution. “We are so big, we need a centralized location.”

Attention, Mr. Brietbart…I smell a new website coming. Big Protest.

Well there’s a certain amount of honesty there.

While we’re taking requests, I’d like new carpet, and my bathrooms and kitchen remodeled. This actually might be cheaper than that kids college education.

A friend of mine who lost MANY friends emailed the following to me today:

“I don’t know why I do it but I just can’t help myself. I walked through Zucotti Park last night around 7pm just to see what this filth was up to. When I saw an old man with a sign that read “America is a Terrorist Nation” I asked him to explain himself but he became so enraged with me that the police stepped in. He had no answers for me and was screaming nonsense at me as I walked away. There is a new addition to the park, a big screen is set up now with words on it telling the crowd what to chant. They can’t even think for themselves anymore.

That brought me to the lower part of the park that was caddy corner from what used to be the entrance of what was formerly known as Liberty Park (now Zucotti park) where there was the sound of non stop drum beating which I’m sure the residents in the area with children love to hear. Anyway, I came across the famous statue of the man sitting with his breif case opened that I passed everyday for almost 22 years before this scum planted themselves in this newly renovated park. I’ve been up there once or twice a week observing since this nonsense began but finally noticed the sight of this statue desecrated with food and garbage and a silly Santa hat on it really was insulting. These people have no regard for anyone or anything. As I looked at the statue with the WTC in the background yards away, I thought of the image of that statue covered in dust the days after the murders of Sept 11th . The statue to many was a sign of resilience and a rallying cry to rebuild and recover after the attacks. It now sat there in a pile of garbage surrounded by vermin that have no concept as to what it meant to so many people. After taking the Santa hat off and throwing it out and wiping it off, three twenty somethings watched me and asked me what it was and why it was there. After telling them one of them said (for some reason believing I was part of this Slopfest) “he belongs to the 99% now”. I said ‘not a chance, he has character and has seen too much to ever be a part of this mess. I think he feels sorry for you’and I walked away.

Walking down Chruch St on the way to the PATH was enraging that this sort nonsense is taking place pretty much on the grounds of the worst attack and mass murder on our country in history. I looked up at the towers and thought of all my friends and co-workers that were murdered and what they would think of these losers. It made me s think when will people start standing up and challenge these clowns. Why just two short years ago were the Tea Party and people so vocal but now seem to be retreating while this counter culture gets the attention and picks up steam. Why is there no counter demonstartion? How weak is Bloomberg, Giuliani would have never ever put up with this.

I’m sure I’ll be back there this week. Why I don’t know. Jay

The large Methodist Church in Chapel Hill, NC, has agreed to open its doors and restrooms to the planned ‘Occupy Chapel Hill’ rally to be held on Saturday.
Chapel Hill (The People’s Republic of) will be ‘occupied’ by students from well-to-do families who have always provided the students with everything they wished for, unwashed (and unshaven) miscreants and malcontents from nearby Carrboro, homeless winos and addicts who already ‘occupy’ Chapel Hill, and democrat party operatives. Honestly I would love to see the undesirables who will gather, but not enough to drive over there. Most likely we can read all about it later in the local rag, The Poos and Obscurer.
I wonder who will be cleaning up the mess. I guess it will be the barely-paid illegals that the Methodist Church employs. We won’t hear anything about that though. They will probably have them clean on Saturday night so that the liberal elites who attend church on Sunday won’t have to experience the stench and filth that the ‘occupiers’ will leave behind. I can only hope that the ‘occupation’ lasts until Sunday and that the ‘occupiers’ are still there, still making a mess (and openly doing drugs and having sex), on Sunday morning.

This poor lad is suffering from lack of brains. I wonder what his major course of study is? That degree will not open many doors as it once did. Ask any employer what their first choice of employee has to offer and while your at it ask how many college grads just don’t cut it.
