Iranian terror plot in US foiled

posted at 2:32 pm on October 11, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

The Department of Justice announced today that they have foiled an attempted terrorist attack — perhaps a wave of them — in the US.  This time, though, the plot didn’t originate with al-Qaeda, but instead with Iran:

FBI and DEA agents have disrupted a plot to commit a “significant terrorist act in the United States” tied to Iran, federal officials told ABC News today.

The officials said the plot included the assassination of the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States, Adel Al-Jubeir, with a bomb and subsequent bomb attacks on the Saudi and Israeli embassies in Washington, D.C.

Bombings of the Saudi and Israeli embassies in Buenos Aires, Argentina, were also discussed, according to the U.S. officials.

The stunning allegations come against a backdrop of longstanding tensions between Iran and the United States and Saudi Arabia. In the last year, Saudi Arabia has attempted to build an anti-Iran alliance to push back against perceived aggression by Iran in the region.

If true, would that not be an act of war?  We’re presently using drones in Pakistan and Yemen against al-Qaeda terrorist networks for plotting similar attacks, thanks to the AUMF from October 2001, even though we’re nominally allied with both nations.  If the government of Iran plotted attacks on American targets, that should require a response from the US, should it not — or do we send a signal that even attacks from actual nation-states fall under the rubric of law enforcement?

So far, it looks like the latter:

Arbabsiar and a second man, Gohlam Shakuri, an Iranian official, were named in a five-count criminal complaint filed Tuesday afternoon in federal court in New York. They were charged with conspiracy to kill a foreign official and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, a bomb, among other counts.

The complaint also refers to another Iranian official but does not name him.

If we’re charging an official of the Iranian government with complicity or worse in this plot, then it ceases to be a law enforcement issue and becomes a military and political issue instead.  This isn’t a case of espionage but of sabotage or worse, which would be an act of war by anyone’s definition.  If we’re not willing to respond in kind, we then send a signal to hostile nation-states around the world that attacks on the US are low-risk, high-reward affairs — and we’d better get ready for an avalanche of them.

Of course. That allows us to avoid taking hard action against them. Iran is aware of the size of Barry’s cojones when it comes to countries like Syria or Iran. They’ve got him figured out, and need to quickly get a notch on the gunhandle before the 2012 elections and an administration change.

Mr. Holder, did we sell them the bomb making materials on this one? did the suspects keep the items in a basement converted into a gym along with .50 cal rifles that we also sold them? Since when did you take an interest in protecting Saudi and Israeli lives and what do you have to say to the family of Brian Terry?

Yet another example of Holder’s incompetence to lead the DoJ. These saboteurs should have been handed off to the CIA for interrogation prior to termination. Instead Holder’s old terrorist-defending law firm will make beaucoup bucks defending more US enemies while Obama dithers on what to do about Iran.

ironmonger69 on October 11, 2011 at 2:42 PM

The likelyhood of this being a real plot is almost 0. More likely scenario is people talking on the phone blowing off steam. I would like to see evidence it procceeded to anything more than bravado talk before I conclude that Iran would seriously have considered doing this.

Really, Iran would have to understand setting bombs off in the USA proper would be an act of war and that the United States would wipe their government off the map, likely killing the hidden IMAM in the process.

In a July 17, 2011, meeting in Mexico, CS-1 noted to Arbabsiar that one of his workers had already traveled to Washington, D.C., to surveill the Ambassador. CS-1 also raised the possibility of innocent bystander casualties. The complaint alleges that Arbabsiar made it clear that the assassination needed to go forward, despite mass casualties, telling CS-1, “They want that guy [the Ambassador] done [killed], if the hundred go with him f**k ‘em.” CS-1 and Arbabsiar allegedly discussed bombing a restaurant in the United States that the Ambassador frequented. When CS-1 noted that others could be killed in the attack, including U.S. senators who dine at the restaurant, Arbabsiar allegedly dismissed these concerns as “no big deal.”

tpw on October 11, 2011 at 2:52 PM

Whole thing sounds fishy. Either to divert Fast & Furious attention. A re-election boost for Barry Soetero. A big boost for the embattled FBI. Or all three.

1 Earlier there was a “foiled” terrorist blot to bomb the Pentagon with toy airplanes with explosdive-filled model airplanes. The equivalent of attacking a grizzly bear with a feather duster.

2 Now we “foiled” an attack on an extremely minor official-Saudi ambassador to US in DC. If you’re doing a big time attack in the nation.s capitol, it doesn’t make any sense to attack small fry–the equivalent in World war II-instead of trying to kill Rommel-go for some German platoon sergeant instead.

What does Holder, Homeland Security, Obama, etc., gain from revealing such information at this time?

If they truly were trying to uncover a plot, and to track down all those involved, they should not be tipping their hand as they are. In so doing, they force others involved in this plot to go deeper underground and hide their evidence and involvement, and cover their tracks, as well as create a plausable deniability factor.

Furtyhermore, Obama, Holder, et al, are weaklings and will do nothing of any consequence to Iran if this claim is true.

Remember, it is all George W. Bush’s fault, and it is all those nasty Jooows and Israel’s fault. No. This is merely a tactic by Holder, Obama, et al, to pull a bit of presdigitation on John Q Public, Congress, and so forth, when Obama, Holder, and all involved, are feeling their testicles in the vice, and the vice beginning to close, on their brain dead Fast and Furious maneuver, as well as Obama Care’s failure and its destructive results, as well as Obama’s terrible, total failure, as a President and an Administration, and Holder’s clear and ever present racism, selective prosecution and investigation habits, and the current administration’s disdain for US citizens, Obama’s and Holder’s lies, and threats, and miscarriage of justcie, such as the Gibson Guitar raid, and others.

Would the Iranians be stupid enough the work with FBI informants? In order to get a bomb?

I’m sorry, but anyone that believes this is criminally stupid.

Wasn’t it on 9/11 that we had all these possible threats, and then it just went….dead??? Something tells me this was it, and they set it on the shelf to be used, when they needed it. Not for the good of the nation.

Also…

. If we’re not willing to respond in kind, we then send a signal to hostile nation-states around the world that attacks on the US are low-risk, high-reward affairs — and we’d better get ready for an avalanche of them.

All according to plan, to purge us from our sinful ways? Obama seems to believe he’s God, doesn’t he?

I’d like to remind people that the US has had covert operations in Iran for a while, with probable help in knocking off those nuclear scientists.

So… the argument of “they’re doing it, so let’s respond” is weak.

Nonetheless, it’s a very serious act. It happened as early as June so the WH has been sitting on this for a while. They were probably delaying releasing this because of the US hikers’ potential release from Iran, and because of a-jad’s trip to NYC.

But you know, Iran is very actively engaged in acts like this pretty much all the time. The release of this info now is a tactical upping-the-ante move by Obama in the long covert war against this terrorist and evil regime. He did not do it to get attacked by the right for “failing to respond”. If he publicized it it means he intends to do something about it.

I can’t believe I’m actually agreeing with you on this.

The timing wouldn’t reek so much if Holder had been flanked by Big Sis–at a minimum. Why wasn’t Homeland Security there as well?
