Herman Cain to Wall Street protesters: “If you don’t have a job and you are not rich, blame yourself”
posted at 8:08 pm on October 5, 2011 by Allahpundit
Skip ahead to 9:40 for the key bit. The left, understandably, is salivating over this soundbite, coinciding as it does with Cain’s rise to frontrunner status and the media’s push to make the Wall Street protests into a Very Big Deal. The whole thrust of Obama’s re-election message on the economy next year is to counter his incompetence with the GOP’s supposed callousness: Yes, granted, things are a disaster, but he cares a lot and is trying super-hard whereas Republicans don’t care much about the average American at all. Aren’t you better off with a guy who doesn’t know how to fix the problem but is doing his best instead of a guy who thinks the problem is your fault and wants you to suck it up? This clip plays right into that message; I suspect Democrats will use it in general-election ads even if Cain’s not the nominee, as an example of what the GOP as a whole believes. Imagine how it’ll play with, say, an unemployed fiftysomething who got laid off after 20 years because his company was forced to downsize after the recession. No wonder ABC and CNN have pieces out this afternoon showcasing the quote. Even Ben Bernanke’s showing more sympathy for anti-Wall Street grievances.
But here’s the question: Will Romney and/or Perry dare use this against Cain in the primary? If Mitt’s willing to demagogue Perry’s view of Social Security as being worse than a Ponzi scheme, he’s certainly willing to hit his newest threat on this — unless there’s so much grassroots enthusiasm for Cain’s pushback on the protesters that it’s too risky to take him on. When I tweeted the link to the video this afternoon, my feed lit up with replies thanking Cain for injecting a note of personal responsibility into the OWS din. Romney would have to tread lightly if he went after Cain for it, but he might not be able to resist a chance to posture now as a champion of the unemployed given how dangerous his banker image might otherwise prove in the general election.
As for Cain’s claim (which he admits he has no facts to support) that the protests have been orchestrated to distract from Obama’s policies, I don’t think it’s true yet. As noted last night, the nucleus of this thing appears to be our old friends the anarchists. But Cain’s certainly right that this is why Democrats have suddenly taken such a keen interest in the protests. The more Wall Street or “the banks” or whatever the hell else they’re protesting is to blame, the less Obama is. More media coverage, stat!

well, I know how this played out in 1968…and the left lost (electorally). Our press has hoped for a recreate 68 for some time now….so maybe they’ll get it.
But unions are not that popular AP…esp. the big thuggish ones. And 20 somethings camping out in WS doesn’t quite have the ring of authenticity.
So yeah, the leftist press/DNC will spin away..they always do. Again, I say, if the voters are stupid enough to take a Dim ad spot of Cain saying something and voting on that basis alone…we’ve already lost the fight

That’s hardly the only line they’ll manipulate. However, how do you think it will fare against Obama admitting that Americans are worse off than they were four years ago? Cain will have to make a serious gaffe to compete with that gold.

Nope—he did it by the power of his ideas. Creative ideas to make great products work that the OWS crowd loves to use. I betcha they love them some pizza too.

VIDEO: Herman Cain ignores science in saying that gay is a choice
SDGLN Staff
October 4th, 2011
******************
WASHINGTON – The Human Rights Campaign is calling on GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain to better educate himself on LGBT Americans following remarks he made in which he called being gay a choice.
Cain made his remarks while appearing on “The View” this morning, saying: “You show me the science that says that it’s not. Could be persuaded. Right now it’s my opinion against the opinion of others who feel differently. That’s just a difference of opinion.”
“Herman Cain’s remarks that homosexuality is a choice are, frankly, jaw-dropping and certainly unbecoming of a presidential hopeful,” HRC President Joe Solmonese said.

If people are dumb enough to listen to the media then we are screwed anyway. Obama said so many dumb things that I was sure nobody except the type of people who would attend the Wall Street whine-upation could vote for him.
And he got elected anyway. Should conservatives be stifled because the left will twist their words? They’ll do it anyway or they’ll just make up something if there’s nothing to twist.
Screw them! Tell the truth and let’s find out once and for all if we have a country worth saving.

Oh no. There’s even less evidence linking sexual identity to genetics as there is linking climate to human activity.
Cain’ll never get the nomination now. He’s being opposed by a group that’s using its vast expertise to service the president and takes its orders from a possibly intersexed pop singer.
KingGold on October 5, 2011 at 9:03 PM
Okay, fine… I’ll say it again: there’s a world of difference between Mitt Romney saying something like that (even though he’d be right) and a man who’s mother was a house cleaner and his dad a chauffeur who worked hard to become who he is. NO, I’m not saying Mitt didn’t work hard. But if you can’t see what the public perceives as the difference, well, forgive me. You’re not trying.
Herman is the only one who can say what he did and even come close to getting away with it… if we get out of his way.

As long as we are living in Obamaville, it is not true for 100% of the out of work. Before Obama was elected, this statement was extremely accurate.
I don’t know if I agree with what he said exactly, but I am pretty sure I know what he meant. If you are perpetually unemployed, then you need to work harder and be more responsible. If you are broke, then you need to cut expenses or work more hours. In the end wherever you are in life, it is a result of your own decisions. If you dropped out of High School, then why would anyone hire you? You couldn’t get through High School for crying out loud! If you lost your house because you sent all your money to a Nigerian Prince that promised to pay you back, then you need to pull your head out of your you know what!
Of course there are always exception to every rule, and I’m sure people will find some examples. I am sure Cain would agree with that too.

Cain the homophobe had/has a gay staffer in Iowa and I’m sure a gay employee or two at Burger King/Godfather’s, oh and as part of the Nat’l Restaurant Assoc.. He prefaced the remark saying it is his own personal belief. He’s a southern Baptist..
Mittens is Mormon, so will probably forsake his religous beliefs and march in the next gay pride parade, before changing his mind one more time.
I am ready for a candidate who speaks the truth and expresses his opinion without taking a poll. I watched the View appearance and he did fine… the audience was very receptive.

Funny you say that… I used to work near downtown Dallas and had to exit I-35 at the Marsh exit and go near the Love Field Airport every morning. This was a big Homeless intersection to hit up the people at the light there. I watched and learned that they had a collection of signs and there were about 5 of them that took shifts and ate lunch together at the Jack in the Box on the same corner. You would see the old man with a sign that says “Veteran, just passing through, please help, God bless”. Then later you would see the woman holding the same sign. I would sometimes eat at that Jack in the Box and you had to eat in your car if they were there due to the smell.
The kicker was that in the 2 years I worked by that Jack in the Box, they never took down their sign that read “Now Hiring, All Shifts”. Nuff said…

You might be a Trustafarian if you are part of the OWS crowd and…
- Have any electronic device starting with an “i-”
- Have a pair of sneakers costing over $100
- Have a shirt, pair of pants or jacket with a logo emblazoned on it
- Have an ‘art’ shirt that cost more than $50
- Have a netbook/notebook/laptop/tablet computer
- Have more rings festooning your body than a packed bar has glasses on the bar
- Have a bandana/headband/keffiyah with a designer tag on it
- Have a pair of shoes that has individual toes as a feature
- Have any piece of clothing other than a belt made out of leather
- Have more pieces of artwork tattoo’d to your body than a SOHO artgallery has
- Have a pre-printed sign because you can’t figure out how to use a magic marker
- Have an item with the mass murdere Che on it
- Spout off about how a system you can’t even understand needing to go because your parents have paid your way through school
- Have a law degree
- Have any degree in any set of studies involving a hyphen or ethnic or gender in its title
- Have more gold jewelry on your body than a pawn shop has in its inventory
- Can say Media Matters with a straight face and think it means something
Yes these are leading indicators of being a Trustafarian.
Any Trustafarian needs to run, not walk, saunter, or just, you know, go more or less in the direction of, the nearest mental health clinic and report yourself with permanent detachment from reality syndrome… they will spend a decade ‘treating’ you and making you poor so you will then have something to complain about.
And if you think you paid too much for your college education then ASK FOR YOUR MONEY BACK as it has done you NO GOOD AT ALL TO GO THERE.

During the Depression my great uncle had looked everywhere for a job and couldn’t find one. He decided where he wanted to work (Standard Oil in Los Angeles). He showed up everday ready to work and sat waiting. When the workmen took their lunchbreak, he took his, then he returned to his waiting post. This went on for several weeks, until the foreman asked him to leave.. He said he would not leave without a job. The foreman hired him on “temporarily”.. 30 years later, he retired.
What I learned about this family tale was that sometimes you have to pound the pavement over and over to get a job. It has served me well during my working life.
kringeesmom on October 5, 2011 at 9:23 PM
That is true though. I have said countless times, we need to say if you are caught in the US illegally, you go to the back of the line. The “quota” for people from Mexico, Panama, etc. needs to be raised to meet demand for legal immigrants.

But wouldn’t it be “racism” to criticize Cain? It’s always been racism to say anything bad about the little messiah. I think any criticism of Cain should be called racism, just to be fair. Surely the little messiah hisself would agree, right?
BillCarson on October 5, 2011 at 9:26 PM
This was beyond dumb of Cain to say. The left will run wild with that quote. Especially if he wins the primary.
Also, I’m still not getting why the same people that were so fired up for the Tea Party protests against the bailouts and stimulus bill are attacking the lefty protesters who’ve finally come around to see that the banks made off like bandits with TARP and the middle class has yet to see any benefit from that.
Yeah, they support Obama. So what? Can’t we all just agree that the fed, the banks, and Goldman Sachs are an evil empire that’s been running our country for decades? Anything beyond that we don’t need to discuss until their grip on our economy is done away with.

gwelf on October 5, 2011 at 9:43 PM
This is sort of like Perry’s ponzi gaffe.
It isn’t that the statement is completely untrue, it is that it is insensitive and does not further the conversation.
It may be exactly true for the losers I saw interviewed the other day. Those exact people camped out in NYC.
But nearly 10 percent of Americans are unemployed against their will right now. So this statement must come as a slap in the face to the people who are losing their house, taking out bankruptcy, can’t take vacation and so forth.
There is pain in America.
Cain needs to be more sensitive about it.
This was injudicious.
And it is the kind of newbie mistake that first time candidates make. Romney has plenty of newbie mistakes that he pays for everyday. So Cain is building his supply as well.
I like Cain, he is my second choice, I hope he doesn’t start to self-destruct like Perry did. He shouldn’t have spoken about Perry’s pet rock until he knew more. And he should have thought about the way this statement might be heard all over America.
When you are running for President you can’t just go shooting your mouth off! You have to think first and make sure you don’t mess things up.
Or be more “plastic” I guess. But that is the way it is.

flataffect on October 5, 2011 at 9:45 PM
I honestly think the fawning coverage will dwindle and die off for two reasons:
1. It’s starting to get cold at night, and the OWS crowd can’t decide how to procure basic items like sleeping bags without going inside the evil capitalist system. The outside money and donations won’t be enough to get them through the winter, and they’ll have to leave Wall Street for warmer climates.
2. Violence. It is a very likely possibility at this point, despite all their repeated calls for non-violence. Nothing is getting done fast enough in their minds, and the addition of union goons only adds fuel to the fire. Someone’s going to do something stupid, the NYPD is going to come down in full force, and worst of all for the OWS crowd, the provocation will be caught on tape.
And I say this as a person who would have a hard time getting a job if I chose to look for one: Cain’s got a good point, and I would be a lot more ashamed for my generation if it weren’t for the ones who joined the military.

We need to bring up the old political signs that depicted the Republican Party as the party of blacks. Cain needs to keep the blame on Obama….not the unemployed.
…he can certainly come back against his antagonist with “I was referring to the protesters on Wall St. who are demanding all debts be forgiven….$20 hr. minimum wage…..and trillions more in spending for democratic special interests that is breaking this country”……
……….”after all…it’s Obama who just told the country that we are “soft” and have to toughen up”…….
But in the end he needs to sharpen his message and keep it on Obama.
…..Republicans need to do everything they can to get democrats to attach themselves to these protest as much as possible.
We have unions…Anarchists….and juvenile Obama minions that are going to implode right in front of all the MSM’s camera’s and pathetic pandering.
This is going to get violent (there were more arrests today)…and big business along with Wall St. are going to eventually make it clear that they will take their business (along with their job creation) elsewhere.
The Head of Coke has already said that China is more business friendly than the US right now.
Class warfare and activism aside…….none of these people represent job creation or a solution to the problems facing this country.
They represent anger…discouragement….and failure which the leadership of this country will be held accountable for.
Obama rode in on “Hope and Change”…”a brighter future”…..”a return to America’s greatness”…..
If you think Cain’s poor choice of words is going to make for good campaign fodder….wait till you see the videos and political spots of Obama in all his glory promising rainbows…unicorns…and butterfly farts contrasted with violent unrest….major unemployment….. a failed economy…..and our business leaders declaring they are heading out of this mess.
How this attack on Wall St., combined with Obama being bought and sold by this same wall St., is supposed to help him win re-election is beyond me.

You can be a little more specific than science. I’ll demonstrate: I have two degrees too, a bachelors degree and a masters degree. One is in mathematics, the other is in mathematics. I won’t sully the good name of mathematics by calling it a science.

Don’t presume to tell me how I should think.
I’m currently unemployed, and this statement doesn’t bother me a bit. Mainly because my “job” right now is making myself more marketable, and getting interviews. I’m also working on starting my own business, and have been doing anything and everything to help feed my family.
There are opportunities all over the place – maybe not doing what you want (I’m also doing temp work as an administrative assistant, which isn’t what I have a master’s degree for, while I wait), but you do what you need to to survive.
So, yeah, the opportunities are there – and if you aren’t willing to go looking for them – or making them – you DO only have yourself to blame.

Allah:
The media will make up stories about Cain to try and kill his candidacy. Where was your post that Bush should never have served in the Air National Guard because if he did there would be fake stories about dishonorable things he did?
The left is nothing but a crew of liars, and quite frankly Herman Cain is right. Independents are tired of people who try to pander to them and pretend if government just steps in and does something for you that all will be well. My mother owns a small business, several of my relatives are self-employed. People who have been on unemployment benefits for 2 years are not able to be hired. Their marketable skills have lapsed. Continuing to pay them not to work does not do them any favors, and I think even the people who have been on the full boat are starting to realize it.
Anyone who wants to say Herman Cain is insensitive, you tell that person: “Herman Cain grew up in the segregated south. His mother was a maid and his dad was a chauffeur. Have you ever been in a situation that bad during your entire life? Do you really think he doesn’t understand what you’re going through if you’re poor and unemployed?”
Democrats will lie, but then, so will bears crap in the woods. Herman Cain is honest and forthright, and he shouldn’t stop telling the truth because of bad optics. There’s no such thing as good optics when you have a mass media willing to lie to ruin your reputation.
BKennedy on October 6, 2011 at 1:31 AM
I REFUSE to cower my thoughts. I love that Cain does too.
THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT THE LEFT, AND MSM WILL STILL PAINT WHATEVER CANDIDATE ON THE RIGHT AS HEARTLESS, GREEDY, AND ON THE SIDE OF THE WEALTHY!
AT LEAST CAIN LET SOME ARROWS FLY. Most on the right are too busy trying to be liked to worry about truth, or treating the public with enough respect to speak straight, not hedge everything.

As these ‘protests’ grow, Obama will have achieved his dream of class warfare. Now that Moveon.org, and the Unions are getting involved, whether or not Obama gets his second term become secondary. Obama and the lib dems will have gotten their desire…a fractured America that is weaker on the foreign front AND domestic front.
It is time to buy a weapon to protect what is mine from those who do not wish to work for their own, or whom are too lazy to go out and do what is necessary to EARN their own.
Their are troubling times ahead for the United States, and the blame lay squarely with Obama and his minions.

There is a big difference between setting your sights high with the motivation to excel and the obvious sense of entitlement that Generation Whine displays. That is the problem with those spoiled brats coming out of college today. They expect the top level jobs as soon as they graduate. And as far as Seven Seas goes, I find it hard to believe that after applying to over 1,000 places that he still was not able to find a job unless he was either applying for positions he was not qualified for or his CV is suspect.
Wolftech on October 6, 2011 at 5:58 AM
Allahpundit is a good example of why a 3rd Party is needed. Screw the left and the center!
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t one of the GOP’s messages – We are each responsible for our own lives?
If so, then why run from what Herman said? Use it as an opportunity to span explanations on/of, pointing out other failures of the Democratic Party (aka Party of Hate) along with their failure to create jobs.
Karmi on October 6, 2011 at 7:38 AM
Good.
America could use a bit of roughing up from it’s leaders. It’s time to tell Americans to put the “baa-baa” down and put the big boy pants on. No more free rides. You want something? Go out and work for it. Otherwise you don’t deserve it. Are you an able-bodied adult and poor? Your poverty is your own fault. Grow up.
I guess you could say; America needs a good “Cain-ing”.

LOL…
Cain was quick to jump on to a media-contrived scandal meant to paint Perry as a racist. He joined the pile-on instead of giving his fellow Republican the benefit of the doubt.
Now Cain’s own words are being misconstrued by the same media to drum up a scandal against him.
Karma is a b**ch, ain’t it?
TheRightMan on October 6, 2011 at 8:43 AM
No, the media are liars. They lied about what he said regarding Perry, only reporting the negative things he said, but not the praise he had for Parry’s inclusiveness.
Now they are going to lie and take out of context what Cain said about these protests.
Frankly, I don’t see how being lied about twice in a row is “Karma”.

Typing parrot, your beak must be sore. Don’t worry, I am sure someone will fill your birdie numnum tray.
Dr Evil on October 6, 2011 at 9:21 AM
First of all, let me say that I do feel for you. I’ve been unemployed twice in my career through no fault of my own. Once because a company collapsed out from under me, and another due to massive layoffs. Both within the last 8 years. So I know how hard it can be to get a job.
As other posters have noted, I don’t think Herman Cain was talking to guys like you when he made that comment. He was talking about the stinky hippies that just want “free stuff”.
That said, I suspect you may want to review your approach. If you have sent out 1000 resumes with no response there is something wrong. My last job search (just 2 years ago) took all of 30 resumes and 10 applications filled out with 6 interviews. I don’t even HAVE a bachelors or Master’s degree, and I was able to get work. Not super high-paying work, but work.
I would suggest both looking at your resume, and looking at the jobs you are applying for. If you are applying for higher-end positions, try applying for lower-end, more entry-level positions. Make sure your resume is well written. Lots of sources online to help with this. Consider going into business for yourself. Even if it’s not in your chosen field, sometimes all that matters is that you are working.
I should note that I am not working in the field I went to school for. I went to school to be a commercial artist. I ended up in IT as a Network Administrator. Life is funny. Don’t assume that you will end up working in what you studied for. It doesn’t always work out that way.
Good luck to you.
wearyman on October 6, 2011 at 9:25 AM
You sound like you’re healthy. Pull up stakes and move to North Dakota. They’re hiring big time and paying huge in the oil fields. With science and business degrees, you might not even have to get your hands very dirty.
notropis on October 6, 2011 at 9:53 AM
AP, I think his quote applies more to the slacker types who are involved in the protests.
Ward Cleaver on October 6, 2011 at 9:58 AM
Herman Cain speaks the truth.
Decent, able-bodied people work hard to get jobs, and work multiple jobs, if need be, to provide for their families.
This is still the land of opportunity.
America wants truth.
Cain, keep speaking the truth!
We’re standing with you.
We don’t need PC pandering.
balkanmom on October 6, 2011 at 9:59 AM
The protestors in Manhattan voted for Obama. Ya reap what ya sow.
gracie on October 6, 2011 at 10:05 AM
They realize that, though I hope you’re not implying that they would have been somehow better off, or their grievances better dealt with, if we had McCain/Palin in the white house right now.
ernesto on October 6, 2011 at 10:31 AM
Um, I think that’s exactly what he’s implying. Because it’s true. McCain had his issues, but he was no Obama. Hell, we would have been better off with HILLARY than this clown. And that’s saying something.
Socialism NEVER EVER works Ernesto. You get exactly the result we have today. MASSIVE unemployment, while a select few get insanely rich off of government favoritism. Welcome to the reality of socialism.
wearyman on October 6, 2011 at 10:36 AM
That’s right, wearyman. And I’m surprised Obama’s Manhattan mob doesn’t seem to be aware that what they are doing is calling attention to their own dear leader’s failures.
I understand the unions are about to join them…to make the situation even more poignant….stupid, really stupid…. Why would they want to remind us that we are in even more trouble because of the unions’ exhorbitant entitlements and chokehold on the private and public sector.
gracie on October 6, 2011 at 10:56 AM
I like Cain, but balancing the budget would result in an immediate GDP cut of something like 20% or more. I agree that should happen.
But uh, it’s going to be painful. I don’t feel like his message acknowledges the gravity of the situation we are in. It’s not going to be fun, it’s going to be very hard and there is no easy solution.
jhffmn on October 6, 2011 at 10:58 AM
So had McCain been president, corporate influence on elections would be curtailed? Foreclosures and evictions at the hands of bailed out banks would cease? Income inequality would shrink? Statehouses asking the weakest among us to sacrifice while sparing those with the most means would end? Really? These things would not be happening?
Bullsh*t.
ernesto on October 6, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Talk is cheap, and the cheapest talk there is is “Get a job,” unless you’re offering to hire someone.
PersonFromPorlock on October 6, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Typical liberal dribble
dpierson on October 6, 2011 at 11:34 AM
Couple of things …
First – I heard Cain’s quote on Fox News as I was headed into the gym this morning. The quote from him was … “If you don’t have a job – it’s your own damn fault” … can’t remember if he actually said “damn” but I thought he did.
This was NOT a good thing to say – because, with that statement – he captured virtually everyone in this nation who’s unemployed – whether they are a part of the protests are not. Even if you’re a law-abiding, Cain-loving, Republican who got laid off through no fault of your own – you’re still being told by Mr. Cain that it’s “your fault”.
But this kind of just proves Cain’s inexperience as a politician doesn’t it? I mean – there’s a thousand other things he could have said about these protests where he could have “limited” the insult to just those hooligans who are out there complaining about – nothing.
Second thought is … Cain is now tied with Romney (or so they say) for the GOP nomination. Herman Cain is now about to feel the heat he helped to dish out to Rick Perry. The LSM – of course – wants to run against Romney. So it’s Cain’s turn in the fire.
Hope he can take it.
HondaV65 on October 6, 2011 at 11:35 AM
If you can’t get a job where you live – move!
I’m tired of having people complaint that they can’t stay exactly where they are and have the jobs come to them. If you really want to work then there is a job out there.
dpierson on October 6, 2011 at 11:38 AM
I don’t like John McRAGE – but had he become President – there would have been no stimulus. Which means that we’d owe about $4T less in debt right now.
Make no mistake – the debt and deficit are STRONG drivers of the current economic conditions.
Along with another train wreck … ObamaCare. Wouldn’t exist if McRAGE had been elected. That right there is a MAJOR reason employers aren’t hiring.
So there you go.
Obama inherited a bad situation – he made it gravely worse.
HondaV65 on October 6, 2011 at 11:38 AM
Since when? Remember, public debt was highest during the post-War boom, and year on year deficits were highest during the economic expansion of the Reagan years. While I suppose your point is debatable, you conveniently ignored the issues I mentioned in my comment, and I know just why: the conservative answer to all of those issues is simply: “There is nothing we can do”.
ernesto on October 6, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Cain was already somewhat vulnerable due to his CEO history, this just adds to it. For example, you notice Cain does not talk about his CEO time all that much in speeches. Reason being: when he took over Godfather’s pizza the first thing he did was close 60% of the locations and fire all those employees. You could argue that he did what was necessary, but that’s not how it would look to the average (stupid) voter…
