ESPN boots Hank Williams Jr for Obama-Hitler comparison
posted at 9:25 am on October 4, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Were you ready for some football? A Monday night party? If you were, you might have noticed one of the regulars didn’t make an appearance. ESPN booted Hank Williams Jr from its broadcast last night after remarks he made on Fox & Friends comparing Barack Obama to Hitler:
After ESPN dropped Hank Williams Jr. from opening Monday Night Football tonight after Williams’ controversial comments Monday about President Obama, the singer now says he was“misunderstood.”
Says ESPN, in a statement: “While Hank Williams Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize he is closely linked to our company through the opening to Monday Night Football. We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast.”
Williams, perhaps best known for his “are you ready for some football?” lead-in to ESPN’s Monday Night Football, Monday compared this summer’s so-called golf summit between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner as “one of the biggest political mistakes ever.”
As Williams put it on Fox News’ Fox & Friends: “It would be like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli leader) Benjamin Netanyahu.”
When asked on Fox to explain his analogy, Williams said Obama and Vice President Biden are “the enemy.”
It’s the second time that ESPN has enforced its political-neutrality rule in the last two months. They publicly rebuked Azinger for criticizing Obama on Twitter in August, although they didn’t remove him from the air. That may well be due to the qualitative difference in the remarks; Azinger tweeted that he’d played less golf than Obama this year and created more jobs, while Williams went for the LaRouchian Obama-is-Hitler hyperbole. It’s not clear whether ESPN meant this as a one-game suspension or a personnel change, but by next week that should be clear.
Of course, Williams says he was “misunderstood.” Was he? You be the judge:
To paraphrase Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder: You never go full LaRouchian, dude. Never.
I don’t think Williams was misunderstood at all; he was pretty blunt about it, and claiming that people didn’t catch some alleged nuance is just laughable. But should that mean that anyone who makes Hitler comparisons to contemporary political leaders should be barred from NFL performances? If so, then the NFL might need to reconsider its latest entertainment decision:
Will Madonna take the field at halftime during the Super Bowl come February?
Madge is reportedly in talks to headline the 2012 halftime show at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, which would mark her debut on the massively watched pro football telecast — that according to a sports blog citing a source “close to the event.” …
Recent halftime performers have included the Black Eyed Peas, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. Madonna would in theory have a blank canvas to showcase her catalog of work, from the “Like a Virgin” days to her most recent, electric-hop record, “Hard Candy.”
Yeah, that’s just what the Super Bowl needs — another middle-aged pop star well past her prime giving us a “Sweating to the Oldies” set. But Jammie Wearing Fool recalls when Madonna was positively LaRouchian herself, in 2008:
Madonna kicked off her Sticky & Sweet Tour in the U.K. Saturday, and stirred up a beehive of controversy by comparing Republican presidential nominee John McCain to Adolf Hitler in a video montage during the show.
During the song “Get Stupid,” Madonna flashed images of McCain alongside photos of Hitler and brutal Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, as well as images of destruction and global warming, according to British paper The Times.
By contrast, in the next segment of the performance, she used the image of Democratic nominee Barack Obama alongside pictures of John Lennon, Mahatma Ghandi and Al Gore.
Frankly, I’d watch football if both of these two performed, or if neither of them did. I really couldn’t care less if Williams performs before every Monday Night Football game or if Madonna breaks out the bustier for a halftime gig at the Super Bowl. I’ll be getting the veggie tray and drinks during halftime anyway. What I do care about is a double standard when it comes to political expression by entertainers that penalizes conservatives while giving progressives a pass.
Update: There’s been some silly defenses of Williams in the comments that claim he didn’t compare Obama to Hitler. Williams himself admitted he did:
“My analogy was extreme — but it was to make a point. I was simply trying to explain how stupid it seemed to me — how ludicrous that pairing was. They’re polar opposites and it made no sense. They don’t see eye-to-eye and never will. I have always respected the office of the President.
“Every time the media brings up the tea party it’s painted as racist and extremists — but there’s never a backlash — no outrage to those comparisons,” Williams said. “Working class people are hurting — and it doesn’t seem like anybody cares. When both sides are high-fiving it on the ninth hole when everybody else is without a job – it makes a whole lot of us angry. Something has to change. The policies have to change.”
None of which makes anyone Hitler, champ. Hitler wasn’t Hitler because he had fundamental disagreements with a political opponent and playing golf while unemployment remained high. Obama and Biden are political opponents, not enemies. Find better analogies or stick to the honky-tonk music.

All things considered, reading the text and listening to the tape, I don’t see how anyone could actually say he was calling Obama Hitler. He could just have well be calling Obama Benjamin Netanyahu and calling Boehner Hitler. Anyone who thinks the comment was calling Obama Hitler would have to be projecting their own views that A: Hitler is the bad guy between Hitler and Netanyahu, and B: Obama is the bad guy between Obama and Boehner.
Other comments make it obvious that Williams is not an Obama fan, but if that gets him kicked off ESPN, then ESPN itself is risking having a hell of a lot of viewers being forced by them to take a side that likely won’t come out in their favor.

So much stupidity.
Yes, it was probably stupid to use Ogabe and Hitler in the same sentence.
Yet, Ogabe was not called Hitler, but of course the masses of morons think that is what happened, so let it be written, let it be done!
ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN radio, and ESPN online is full of dim-witted lefties columnists and reporters who are completely untalented, and intellectually inept. Yet, they feel they need to interject their idiotic political views into sports reporting. It has been this way for years.

yeah, and freedom of speech is a two way street. i explained that to a liberal this morning when he said the dickie chicks’ freedom of speech was denied. ESPN is perfectly within their rights to have on or not have on whoever they want. i also have the freedom to watch or not watch and to buy or not buy from their sponsors as i see fit. liberals really dont get that concept.

I haven’t read any of the comments, but I’m just frustrated with the inaccurate reporting on this.
HWJr. didn’t compare Obama to Hitler. That is a FALSE statement and you guys need to stop it. He compared the SITUATION of the meeting to Hitler meeting with Netanyahu.
You should change this statement, Ed:
ESPN booted Hank Williams Jr from its broadcast last night after remarks he made on Fox & Friends comparing Barack Obama to Hitler:
It’s FALSE.
I’ll take ESPN seriously when they remove Kenny Mayne and Mike Lupica from their broadcasts. Otherwise, they’re just another liberal hack POS that I’ll not give a crap about.

He also contributed millions to build a new library after his players complained about the original one. JoePa requires a higher GPA from his players than the NCAA does. Several players mentioned that it was difficult to meet his standards with sub-par facilities, so Joe asked for a new library. The university balked, so Joe ponied up his own money.
He’s coached 700 games at Penn State, hit 400 wins last season, and has lived through nearly 1,000 coaching changes in college football.

The libs would probably also be outraged by “birds of a feather flock together” in reference to Obama and Wright and Van Jones: they would hysterically claim that you called Obama a “bird”!!! (…or maybe even that you had given Obama the bird!)
You really have to streeeeetch to accept the phony premise. This is merely another example of liberals crouching and waiting for a phony outrage so they can criticize someone who does not share their views.
Don’t legitimize the phony perpetually-outraged-by-any-opposition Liberals by accepting their phony premise!!!

PappyD61 on October 4, 2011 at 12:54 PM
I love Bocephus and I have always thought of watching NFL games as tantamount to watching paint dry.
Monday night football was fun 30 years ago when Howard Cosell and Dandy Don were commentators, but it is boring now.
Bocephus had earlier promised to run against Bob Corker for the US Senate race in Tn in 2014, so maybe this is his laying the groundwork for that effort.
I caught Hank in concert last year and he was a true showman.
I have all 50 or so of his CDs.
He is an avid gun collector and shooter who reloads his own ammo.
And he uses the Ruger logo as his own, which looked pretty cool on the tail of his Cessna Citation.
I appreciate Ed’s bringing up the prospect of the NFL having Madonna sing during the Super Bowl half-time show.
She is a boor, but altogether typical of the cult of celebrity which pervades professional sports and the media.
Picking Madonna for this event reminds me of some of the depths to which Dancing With the Stars goes in assembling its cast.
It is a veritable freak show, but my wife and her parents insist on watching it, while I retire to a different room to read.
Dancing with the Stars should have a relationship with NBC which lets it transition each season’s cast to Celebrity Rehab.

Secondly, even had Williams made the direct comparison, it have been inapt. After all, Hitler completed his public works project!

By the way, I cannot believe that a Downfall Parody hasn’t been made of this yet.
victor82 on October 4, 2011 at 1:04 PM
That they are. When did that deal go through by the way?
I remember signing off on ESPN years ago because it was just so dumbed down. All the talking heads were just trying to be too clever – trying to make a name for themselves with some witty catch phrases or style. It was all so forced, though.
I used to enjoy reading page 2 online, I always liked reading Tuesday Morning Quarterback (even though Easterbrook is left leaning and unfortunately that comes out in sports writing – still, he writes well and is always witty). Then all the writing became a jumble of Bush quips, pointless essays on how racist we are because they aren’t enough African-American pitchers in the majors, and a general cesspool of liberal/PC politics.
Not to metion the tabloid nonsense.
Of course, the event that finally got me to make the call to my cable company was the showing of a Lebron James high school game in prime time.
reaganaut on October 4, 2011 at 1:05 PM
Whether he called Obama Hitler or not…so what? Is he not allowed to have an opinion, or express that opinion? They over-reacted because they’re hypersensitive to criticism of the One (as shown by the Paul Azinger thing), bottom line. Meanwhile, Kenny Mayne is allowed to say all the pro-Obama stuff he wants.

I’m a big football fan but this is when I really dislike the NFL and ESPN. They take themselves waaay too seriously.
It’s just a freaking football game. Why do we need Hank Williams Jr.’s goofy opening for MNF and why do we need Madonna trashing it up at the Super Bowl? Seriously, how many people last night told themselves, “You know, I WAS going to watch the football game tonight but that crazy Hank Williams Jr. said some mean things about the president so now I have no interest in watching the game.” Answer: zero.
Anyone who has the slightest inkling of watching a football game does not give a flip about the stupid music video intro.

Hitler comparisons are bound to get people in trouble. The problem here is, that as other Hot air bloggers have copiously expounded upon, in this case Hank did not make it clear, in his analogy ,whether Obama or Boehner (or neither) was Hitler.
But I am irked at the NFL forcing political decisions (under duress and extortion)upon others-the hammer being economic blackmail. A number of years ago the state of Arizona was one of the few that did not honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “You do it or no Super Bowl” said the NFL. Arizona did it.
There are plenty of good reasons not to have a day named after Martin luther King Jr. 1 He was a womanizer to the extent that he made Bill Clinton look like a Trappist Monk by comparison. 2 He was a phony and a cheat. His PHD at Boston University was earned by a doctoral thesis which he copied word for word (known as ‘plagiarism’ to liberals unfamiliar with the term)from a former Boston University doctoral student. Could you imagine the scandal if Richard Nixon, George Bush or Ronald Reagan had done the same thing? This is not speculation. It is FACT. So why a day named after this cheating phony? And what business is it of the NFL to enforce this day using their economic muscle except to pacify the large percentage of black players which populate the NFL rosters?

I find it amusing that these “stars – libs” come out and trash
Sarah Palin, George Bush, etc. with the most vile language
and nothing happens…not a word….or action.
Then, someone uses “hitler” as a comparison to Obama
(not accurate – however, just a throwaway line that too many
people use when making a point) and the crazies go crazy.
The NFL is just a reflection of political correctness gone mad in this country. They could have just
said, “we talked to him and told him that type of rhetoric was
inappropriate….Hank agreed not to do it again”. End of story.
But, oh no – we must have a big bruhaha….its is all disgusting.

“Silly defenses” Ed? Again, where in his “admission” did he say he was comparing Obama to Hitler? He said his analogy was extreme – that’s it – and he’ll pay the price for it in this politically obsessed society. Enough with the faux outrage. You know exactly what he meant. And yes, after witnessing the last three years, Obama is the enemy. He’s destroying the country.

IlonaE on October 4, 2011 at 1:59 PM
This just in. Man loses job due to using Hitler as a standard of comparison and contrast. Bloggers aghast that Hitler’s name used. America shudders in horror.
I feel for Hank because I was put in the same damn position once on this blog by using Hitler to make a comparison that was obviously extreme in order to punctuate a point. Yes Hank “compared” Obama to Hitler if you want to get technical…but only in the sense that he is the polar opposite of Republicans (ie, the Jews). The use of Hitler does in no way negate the point. Obama is a political enemy.
I did the same thing when I pointed out that the economy in Germany improved under Hitler, but that didn’t mean he was a good leader. This was in response to why I thought economics should not be the main determining factor for which presidential candidate we support. Rather, their respect for liberty and the constitution should come first. But alas, Goodwin’s false Law has become a beast that causes even the most rational of men to lose their minds. The truth is that the use of Hitler in no way invalidates and argument. It is the substance of the argument that causes it to stand or fall.
But, since Goodwin’s Laws seems to have become the rule of the land, I guess we should also avoid the phrase “you lie down with dogs you come up with fleas” because comparing Obama to a dog would be RAAAAAAACIST!
While were at it, are there any other comparisons that should be banned? Let’s make a list.

Sorry, Ed. You seem to be missing the point. It’s not about nuance at all. He wasn’t directly comparing Obama to Hitler. Not by a long shot. It was a hyperbolic analogy to make a point.
He could just as easily have said:
“It’s just like Jesus playing golf with Caesar”
or
“It’s just like Napoleon playing golf with Wellington”
…
You get the point, don’t you? It’s not comparing the two at all. It’s simply making an extreme point about the fact that Obama and Boehner (not Biden, as you’ve put in your update) having very little in common, politically.
Get off the PC pot, Ed. You’re doing a disservice to the conversation.
nukemhill on October 4, 2011 at 2:57 PM
Not the most intelligent arguments today. The point is that if anyone compares either a Dem or GOP standing or former President to Hitler, that person will no longer be employed by ESPN. The network isn’t taking political sides, but affirming just the opposite.
If someone affiliate with the network compared Bush to Hitler, the response would be identical.

Ed, you might want to check out the definition of hyperbole. You make an exaggerated comparison IN ORDER to get the point across. Williams’ analogy was poor because it will tend to do the opposite…rather than getting the point across you lose the point in “OMG, he just called Obama Hitler!”…but that just makes it ineffective hyperbole. Hank wasn’t comparing Obama to Hitler. He was using hyperbole to illustrate the pairing of Obama and Boehner was that of polar opposites (and a farce — these guys aren’t pals). He could have used any extreme pairing…he made a poor choice.
But I must say I’m really disappointed to see you jumping on the “He compared Obama to Hitler” bandwagon. It is factually incorrect and unfair to HW, Jr.

You said “Goodwin’s” twice, so I don’t know if you were making a joke or not, but all of your points here relating to Godwin’s Law are correct, except for the one about it being “false”. Mike Godwin, the originator of Godwin’s Law, understands that the mere mention of Nazism itself isn’t a problem, it’s its misuage which is. Many people don’t seem to know that his Law is only a commentary about the likelihood of Nazi references being made as an online discussion grows in length; it has nothing to do with fallacious argumentation.
Ed sillily said about Hank Jr.’s hyperbolic analogy, “None of which makes anyone Hitler, champ.” Key phrase here: “hyperbolic analogy”. Hank Jr. never said nor suggested that 0bamessiah was Hitler in an absolute, real sense, he merely said that 0bamessiah was like Hitler in a relative one. Saying that it would have been civilly and diplomatically (and employmentally) wiser for Hank Jr. to use another analogy is much different than inaccurately saying Hank Jr. was calling 0bamessiah Hitler.
As landlines common-sensically said here, “A simile is not the same as the actual thing: otherwise, it wouldn’t be a simile!! Political correctness is one of society’s greatest banes, and it’s sad to see people on the Right abet the Left’s insane devaluation of intention in favor of symbolism.

I don’t think ESPN’s problem is political partisanship on its end as much as it is the appearance of political partisanship; they want to avoid all political controversies, and in that light, I agree with bayam’s post at 3:16 PM, as much as it pains me to do so! :)

I am sick of hearing about “Hitler”.
We are a free people and The One is a downright slacker in the overt political terror and genocide department.
Use my characters and teach the kids some history.

I’m disappointed with Ed.
H W Jr. didn’t call either one Hitler. He was saying it was a very odd pairing and it didn’t make sense to him for political enemies to be yucking it up on the golf course while we have 17% U-6 unemployment, and used a colorful simile.
It would be like saying “cats and dogs”, “Jesus and Satan”, “oil and water” or any other things that aren’t thought of typically mixing nicely together. That was the primary point. There was no intent to say anyone was the equivalent of Hitler.
And if you disagree, then you are worse than H i t l e r! (a little Red Eye humor for those who don’t watch the show)

You know all this talk about Hitler and Mike Godwin has diverted attention from the REAL atrocity of the day:

Thank you! Thank you! I’ll take a bow.

I think you need to go look up how an anology is used Ed, its not always a direct comparision between the elements, its sometimes a comparison between the relationship of the two sets of elements.
So saying Obama is to Boehner what Hitler is to Netanyahu is not necessarily saying Obama is Hitler. It could be saying that they are just polar opposites politcally. Which is what Williams has since claimed.
Its just like how saying crust is to bread what bark is to a tree is not saying that bread crust is tree bark. Get it? This defense isn’t “silly” or “laughable”, its logical. And just because you are incredulous about it doesn’t mean it is any less true or viable.
And this bit of ad hoc reasoning on your part doesn’t fix your oversight. No where does Williams make the claim that Hitler was Hitler because he had disagreements with political opponents or that he played golf while there was high unemployment. So that really is just a strawman argument that lends nothing to the conversation. And differentiating between the definitions of “political opponents” and “political enemies” is just spliting hairs and is a non sequitor when used to refute the claim that Williams makes here:
Netanyahu and Hitler hypothetical relationship would have fallen under both definitions of “political enemies” and “political opponents” and the same is true for Boehner and Obama. Sure, it would be incorrect to claim that Obama wants to kill Boehner and Republicans but again that isn’t what Williams said originally or what he has since said in his clarification.
Really Ed, I expect better from you.

I could use a break from them.

Maybe I’m not reading what you are, cause in what follows, he seems to admit only that he chose those two examples because they’re polar opposites, not because one of them is Hitler.
From what you’re saying he’s admitted, I’m getting the impression that he could have just as easily said… honestly it’s hard to come up with an example that isn’t politically charged. I can’t think of two famous but innocuous people who hate each other.
I haven’t watched the video and honestly don’t really care enough to, but I just don’t see what you’re seeing, Ed, in his response there. You even say that none of that makes him Hitler. I kinda thought that was his point, that he was only using Hitler as a completely polar opposite of another politician.

Well, pardon the cliche, and ban me if you will, but:
Ed, this piece of trash article is nothing short of Epic Fail on your part.
If you cannot discern that an analogy of the type “Obama is to Boehner as Hitler is to Netanyahu” is not in any way “calling Obama ‘Hitler,’” then you, sir, can consider yourself significantly demoted on my list of trusted journalists.
May I strongly suggest you have a long set down and seriously reconsider your judgement in this situation?

Fascinating that HA and others automatically assign the cardboard cut-outs according to their own bias. The Nazi to Obama and the Jew to Boehner. Uh, on what basis?
Neither was “called” either by Mr. Williams. And, if it’s possible to calm down for a second, any rational outside observer would deduce that the hats would be reversed by just about anybody.
GWB was the one on the Hitler posters. Wouldn’t be surprised if Boehner had been given a little mustache before as well. But, Obama? From what hat was that rabbit pulled?
Anybody who makes the knee-jerk assertion that Hank, Jr. “called” BHO Hitler is inventing things from whole cloth.
It was an “as if” analogy. Intended to demonstrate extreme differences in ideology. But, of course, put Hitler in a sentence and brains begin to explode. Rhyme, reason and the rest fly out the window and heaven help those who try to go back and actually look at the circumstances.
Was the analogy overstated? Could be. If so, argue that it was overstated. But, don’t play the Hitler card in reverse.
