Reuters: Huckabee thinking of jumping into presidential race; Update: HuckPAC denies

posted at 2:52 pm on September 30, 2011 by Allahpundit

Dude.

Mike Huckabee has been approached by Republican and conservative activists unhappy with the current crop of presidential hopefuls and he is considering entering the fray, two sources who have spoken with Huckabee told Reuters…

“He is entertaining the request for conversations about it,” one of the sources said. “I do not think it is a complete 100 percent ‘I’m reconsidering’ but he hasn’t shut the door on it.”

One of the sources said Huckabee was urged to enter after the recent stumbles of Texas Governor Rick Perry, who appeals to a similar right wing of the Republican party.

I won’t belabor his history with Perry yet again, but suffice it to say that he’s not a fan of either of the two frontrunners so he’d naturally relish the chance to be the white knight that vanquishes both. Just one teensy question: Er, how’s he going to do that? We’ve spent the past week reading stories about how close Christie and Palin are cutting it by waiting so long to jump in. Huckabee would face the same organizational problems plus a distinct disadvantage vis-a-vis Romney, Perry, and Christie in terms of fundraising, with those three able to draw on big donors in a way that Huck wouldn’t. (That disadvantage could be lethal if we end up with a long primary season.) And of course Perry will take a chunk out of Huckabee’s base among southerners and evangelicals, so he’ll have a harder time running now than he would have had by jumping in early, which might have scared Perry off.

Maybe his decision is contingent on Christie’s decision. If the big guy gets in, he’ll split the centrist vote with Romney the same way Huck would split the southern social-con vote with Perry. Maybe he thinks he can win a four-way race? Or is his inner circle leaking this now simply as a goof, to make tomorrow night’s super-awkward interview with Romney somehow even more super-awkward?

Update: Politico’s hearing rumblings too:

“There’s this opening now,” one activist who spoke to POLITICO just said, confirming the story. The activist said it was a not a huge chance but that “he owes it to his country to look at it. It’s a tall mountain to climb, but it’s not a slog anymore. It’s not some long drawn-out process. It’s 100 days.”

Has any presidential debate performance wreaked as much havoc as Perry’s last?

Update: New half-assed cloak-and-dagger theory: Huckabee knows it’s too late to mount a winning campaign but it’s not too late to run a campaign capable of denying Perry the support he needs to win. He jumps in, the social-con vote splits, Romney waltzes to the nomination, and suddenly Huck lands on the ticket as VP. Awesome.

Update: The rumors are false, says Team Huck.

Huckabee, modestly, blushing, denies.

It was good for his show’s propaganda.

Plus, this thread was a bit of fun.

leave it to the gop party machine to start making Obama appear not so bad. I never put much stock in the rumors that the gop establishment machine wanted to throw this election so Jeb can run in 2016 but the more of these hail mary passes they make diluting their message the more I’m starting to think there might be some kernal of truth in that rumor.

Wait a second. I thought The Establishment was behind Perry to win so that they could benefit as his cronies. Or was it that the The Establishment wanted Romney to win so that they could pull his puppet strings. Oh this is all getting so confusing. I better call The Establishment‘s home office to get the real plot.

MJBrutus on September 30, 2011 at 4:03 PM

Good lord. Can anything be worse?

If Huckabee were the nominee, I would never, never, never vote for him. Never. I have serious issues with Romney, but Romney is a rock-solid conservative compared to Huckabee – who is as liberal as Obama on everything but abortion and gay marriage. And the worst part is that plenty of evangelicals will pull a liberal and support Huckabee because of identity politics.

Because of the abysmal failure of Obama and liberalism generally, we have the real chance this year to elect an actual pretty solid conservative and we have no decent candidate running. It is just too frustrating to bare.

I don’t buy an “establishment” plot. Yes, the GOP establishment generally tends to line up behind and endorse a single candidate – they are after all going to try and determine who is a) a safe bet and b) in their own best interests, which is why they tend to pick a milquetoast career politician who won’t shake things up to much (a la Romney). If the establishment really controlled things, Mitch Daniels would have run or Pawlenty would have caught on.

But the “establishment” don’t control everything that is going on. Most of what is going on is various individuals pursuing their own goals / objectives.

Monkeytoe on September 30, 2011 at 4:08 PM

I suggested that you capitalize on pubishing your novel. You have the heroine, the plot, the lovers/haters, the suspense. I also suggested that you market it as fiction. It will sell better and it won’t matter that way how it ends.

Re: track records, nothing is a given. These times are absolutely insane. As it stands now, here’s my prediction:

1. Keep the House

2. Gain the Senate

4. Obama doesn’t lose, but right wins, due to foolish insanity

5. Legislature blocks him

6. He issues EOs and creates czar positions by the thousands

…and etc.

Whatever will be will be. I claim no special powers. That is for the gods. I’m a mere mortal.

I agree we should keep the house. depends on turnout at this stage if the gop establishment continues to depress turnout like this all bets are off.

the senate gop should retake it but no longer will the gop get a fillabuster proof majority.

chance of obama pulling this out about 55/45 right now. The more the establishment depresses the vote turnout the more likely he is to win.

I don’t know why he bothers. Everyone already knows his agenda. It’s not like anyone who is on the fence about Palin reads him and takes him seriously. To pretend he doesn’t know what she said in her interview with Napolitano yesterday makes him look foolish, not her. Many of her supporters, myself included, got wrapped up in an “end of Sept” timeline but in retrospect it was us taking liberties with what she said, nothing else.

Yep. But the meme is that 98.7% of the country despises Palin and think she’s a joke, and dammit, they’re sticking with it.

The Perrykrishnas are just afraid he’ll siphon off some of the evangelical vote.

NO ONE could have been more bigoted against Romney, for religious reasons alone, than Huckabee. Now, when he might kiss Romney’s azz, you are ok with him?

I defended Romney against him in 2007/08 vehemently. Harlots are indignant.

Ok, Obama is not good with ethics (he said his grades were very low in ethics) and we know he’s no good with math, finances and economics. But some here give him competition in illogical proclamations and statistics.

At this point anyone entering doesn’t really care if they can win the election after getting the nomination.

It’s Gross political malpractice after this point and dangerous for the country’s safety. History’s past late entries had the organization in place years beforehand and the primary schedule wasn’t so front loaded as it is now. They would have 3 months to campaign and get organized. Not smart.

Huck brings something to the table that no one else in the field does.

He makes me seriously consider voting third party.
