Florida poll puts Romney up two points over …
posted at 10:45 am on September 29, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Maybe that P5 straw poll in Florida had more significance than some thought. A new poll by Survey USA of likely Florida primary voters shows Mitt Romney ahead in the GOP nomination race at 27%, but the second-place finisher comes within the margin of error — and it’s not Rick Perry:
In the Florida Republican Primary for President, Mitt Romney at 27% edges Herman Cain at 25%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted for WFLA-TV Tampa. Rick Perry finishes 3rd with 13%, others further back. The Primary is tentatively, and controversially, scheduled for 4 months from today, on 01/31/12,
Romney is strong among older voters, women, moderates and in Southeast Florida. Cain is strong among men, younger voters, Tea Party members, affluent voters and in Northeast Florida. Perry is strong among those who say they are “very conservative,” among those who attend religious services regularly, among Evangelicals and in Northwest Florida.
Newt Gingrich at 6%, and Michelle Bachmann and Ron Paul at 5%, effectively tie for 4th place. Jon Huntsman, in 7th place, finishes ahead of Rick Santorum.
Survey USA has a lot more credibility than Zogby’s online interactive polls do, and Florida is a significant state. This survey took place Saturday through Tuesday, and SUSA culled 500 likely voters from almost 1400 responses on both landlines and cellphones. I’d be interested to see how the general-survey numbers turned out, and how each day’s tally worked out. Even apart from that, though, Herman Cain obviously made a big impression on Florida voters in the debate as well as at the straw poll.
Cain ended up winning a couple of key demographics, especially the age demos of 35-49 and 50-64, leading Romney by double digits in each. Romney won seniors handily, 34/19 over Cain. Cain won Hispanic voters 22/16 over Romney. Cain won men (32/22) and Romney won women (31/17). Not surprisingly, Cain also won self-identified Tea Party voters, although not by as much as one might think at 34/26. Romney won the lower- and middle-income voters, but Cain edged him among those making more than $80K, 28/27.
Rick Perry did surprisingly poorly in this survey. He only got 13% for a distant third, barely ahead of the undecideds at 12%, but well ahead of the second tier. Perry didn’t seriously challenge in any of the demographic categories, finishing at less than half of the Tea Party support Cain got (34/16). Perry’s not the only candidate to do poorly in Florida, either; Michele Bachmann finished at 5% overall and 4% among Tea Party voters, trailing Newt Gingrich in both categories at 6% and 8%, respectively.
At least for the moment, Herman Cain’s momentum is real — in Florida, and that’s no small feat.

Maybe you should call Cain and give him tips on how to tap into his inner religious bigotry? You have it perfected.
csdeven on September 29, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Why not? If Christie and Palin sit out 2012(which seems very likely at this point), the anti-Romney voters who makes up a sizable majority of the electorate will eventually rally around someone. Everyone thought it would be Perry, but he’s on the verge of a major flameout. Bachmann’s already faded. Paul, Huntsman, and Johnson are non-starters. And Newt and Santorum have their own problems(personal baggage and loser stigma respectively).
So why not Cain? Aside from his lack of time in elected office(which can be as positive to some as it is negative for others), what major hurdle does he need to overcome?

Then Perry will give him a “Hold on there now partner…them’s fightin’ words!” What a farce….
gracie on September 29, 2011 at 11:10 AM
Thanks for that.
Somewhere on youtube there is a video of a debate between George Bush and Ronald Reagan over tax policy. It’s a great reminder of the two huge forces always at odds in the GOP — the establishment and the people. Bush exhausts all his proven well-groomed and affectatious skills for debate. Reagan keeps it simple and for the first two-thirds of the debate does not appear to be “winning.” But his simplicity and conviction sneak up on you. He closes with some penetrating logic and truth that leaves Bush lost in the weeds of his own phony sophistication.
In the end, authenticity and simple truths prevail. I have to believe this.

Why wouldn’t “Herb” be electable? Romney likes to say he spent his life in the private sector–yeah, all the time trying to get elected to something. So did Cain, and not as a capital funds management company, but a real retail small business, and isn’t a politician at all.
Compare Cain’s resume to Obama’s in ’08. Cain is vastly better qualified than Obama. Cain’s biggest hurdle is getting the nomination, I have no doubt he would beat Barry.

My comment is that 1) if Palin made an error 4 times in one

2) if she didn’t make a mistake and intentionally called Cain

I guess the question is how long do we think that Bachmann, Santorum, Gingrich, will stay in? Paul has enough supporters to continue to line his pockets/candidacy, Huntsman can self sustain himself for awhile…however the aforementioned cannot stay in w/o cash and they do not have it.
g2825m on September 29, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Mitt Romney can’t poll above 25% that means 75% of the base want someone else….that’s why the GOP is trying to draft Gov Chris Christie. There is a strong Anyone but Mitt demographic, and Herman Cain jumped on the Romney band wagon – while he’s running against him in the primary. Theater of the Absurd? The Republicans need to get their acts together.

My, my -conservative voters pick a black man even though an alternate could have been a smooth talking northern white man and a smooth talking southern white man from Texas. COuld it be that if there is racism today in America, it must be coming from the other side. In either case, Obama’s racist race card game is degrading to the first African -American president far more than it is to the right.

Why Cain SHOULD be elected. Excerpt from his book,
“My guest lists for state dinners and other important occasions will be light on A list celebrities and heavy on normal Americans who work each day to restore our nation to greatness. And unlike the practice of certain previous administrations, there will be no “paying” guests staying in the Lincoln Bedroom.
Once each month I plan to invite small groups of average citizens to join me for dinner and conversation. As someone who will have to spend most of my working hours in Washington, these events will make it possible for me to take the nation’s pulse on the pressing issues, as well as to stay connected to the people.”

ColdWarrior57 on September 29, 2011 at 12:02 PM
Perhaps, but I think it’s far more realistic to say that this shows just how stupid the average voter is: “Wow, that Cain guy sure talks good an he’s kinda funny too, I think we should vote for him.”
Never mind that Cain has zero experience leading anything, he doesn’t even have any idea of how he would handle running the govt. As he has said many times, he’s a problem finder, and once he identifies a problem, he’ll put together a team of people who can fix it. That’s management, not leadership.

I disagree, Dr Evil. Christie has been put up there as a maybe he will and maybe he won’t threat to Sarah Palin. If she enters, he will -just as an attack dog for the GOP elite who fear her more than anyone on the left.
I can’t wait to hear her ask him about gun grabbing, why he supports the Ground Zero Mosque and appointed a man who is a staunch advocate for Sharia law, not to mention how much he loves abortion. She’ll clean his blustery bully of a clock.

Facts about Mitt Romney:
1)He is still a weak front runner. According to the Fox poll yesterday only 23% of the GOP primary electorate nationally now support his bid for the Presidency. And that is after running for President for the last 7 years and without Sarah Palin in the mix.
2)You can’t create a silk purse from a sow’s ear. According to a CBS/NYT poll released on Sept 16, only 10% of evangelical Christian voters now support Romney. That is not a formula for success when 44% of the electorate self-identify as evangelicals (2008 exit polling).
3)Only 1/3 of all GOP primary voters (GOP members and independents who lean Republican)self-identify as liberals or moderates.
Conclusion: The numbers are NOT on Romney’s side unless he can somehow benefit from the conservative vote being divvied up in several different directions.
And I don’t see how Christie’s entry into the race helps Romney either.

Most polls out there show Romney with strong support and he has only been running since early 2007 not 7 years techno…
Many people in the country last go around WANTED to vote for Romney who had already picked up NH, MI, NV, and was on his way to winning in WV when Huckabee and McCain who couldn’t beat him in the voting and so Huckabee voters threw their votes to McCain thus taking Romney out and stunting his momentum into SC and then FL was after where Romney eventually dropped out to rally HIS supporters behind McCain vice what was going on the Democratic ticket where it was being smartly dragged out by Operation Chaos. We are doing that to ourselves somewhat this year having 8-10 candidates and others “thinking” of getting in. The MSM loves this spectacle…
Romney is a strong candidate and will make a great President! There is more support for him than what you may believe.
