Ford pulls bailout-criticism ad after pressure from Obama administration
posted at 1:25 pm on September 27, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Remember the Ford ad that featured a new buyer telling “reporters” that he chose Ford because bailouts aren’t “what America is all about?” Hope you watched it while you could, because the video has been removed from YouTube, and the ad has been pulled by Ford, too. The Detroit News’ Daniel Howes reports that Ford pulled the ad after getting a call from the White House (via Is This Blog On):
“I was going to buy from a manufacturer that’s standing on their own: win, lose, or draw. That’s what America is about is taking the chance to succeed and understanding when you fail that you gotta’ pick yourself up and go back to work.”
That’s what some of America is about, evidently. Because Ford pulled the ad after individuals inside the White House questioned whether the copy was publicly denigrating the controversial bailout policy CEO Alan Mulally repeatedly supported in the dark days of late 2008, in early ’09 and again when the ad flap arose. And more.
With President Barack Obama tuning his re-election campaign amid dismal economic conditions and simmering antipathy toward his stimulus spending and associated bailouts, the Ford ad carried the makings of a political liability when Team Obama can least afford yet another one. Can’t have that.
The ad, pulled in response to White House questions (and, presumably, carping from rival GM), threatened to rekindle the negative (if accurate) association just when the president wants credit for their positive results (GM and Chrysler are moving forward, making money and selling vehicles) and to distance himself from any public downside of his decision.
In other words, where presidential politics and automotive marketing collide — clean, green, politically correct vehicles not included — the president wins and the automaker loses because the benefit of the battle isn’t worth the cost of waging it.
Howes makes a good point about Ford’s track record on “bailouts,” which isn’t nearly as clean as the ad suggests. Ford sought and received “billions” in government loans to retool its plants, which is probably why Ford’s CEO was such a vocal advocate for bailing out his rivals. Had Ford not failed prior to the collapse and hired Mulally to rescue it, Howes writes, Ford might well have lined up at the trough for the big bailouts in 2008 and 2009.
Still, the fact that the White House exerted pressure on Ford to cease and desist is a rather ominous example of why we want government to stay out of the business of running auto companies at all. In fact, government shouldn’t be running any businesses, not car makers, banks, or mortgage lenders. A free market doesn’t stay free when government begins competing in it, and just the mere existence of the ability to use its regulatory power to favor its own operation will distort market behavior in significant and freedom-chilling ways. Knocking an ad critical of government policy off of television and the Internet is simply a more visible symptom of those dangers.
Update: Ford is responding on its Facebook page that it didn’t pull the ad under pressure, but instead had it rotate out normally. That doesn’t explain why Ford pulled it from its YouTube account, though.
Update II: Actually, it appears that Ford deleted the ad and then reposted it on Friday, for some reason, where it now has only 305 views. Here it is again:

If Ford had huevos, they’d tell the Obama administration where to stick their ‘pressure.’
Live free or die!
Until an American car company backs that sentiment, I’ll be driving a Toyota.

On a serious note, this is why, once the primary dust has settled, we must must must unite to get this thug out of the Oval office. His administration has created a nascent, South American style, fascist climate. The external trappings may not be there, but the spirit is thriving. Fight like mad to choose the best candidate we can, but then unite to get Obama out. Also focus on getting as many Tea Party candidates in the House and Senate as possible.

Thing is Obama can ask anyone he wants to pull commercials.
Ford could have said go FU.
It chose not to.
And yes I know, IRS and all that. But since Obama owns GM, he’s going to use those tactics anyway. Look what he did to Toyota over the fake accelerator issue. I’m sure he offered Toyota the same type of deal but Toyota said FU and dealt with it. It took a hit, but in the end came out of the ordeal OK.
Ford caved here.

Just look at what happened to S&P after they downgraded the US. They’ve now got the SEC so far up their rear end a proctologist couldn’t find them. Part of the sales pitch for Obamacare was that it would add competition (in the form of the Govt.) to the health insurance industry. Well health insurance providors, this is what it looks like to have the government as a business competitor. Screen your commercials carefully.

Looks like Ameriprise Financial has some cojones too.
They hired actor Tommy Lee Jones for an ad in which they say right up front that they never accepted any bailouts.
Meanwhile, back to Ford. I drive a Ford F-250 four-door diesel. I bought it specifically BECAUSE Ford didnt take any bailout money in 2008. Forget GM’s Silverturdo. Further, I was going to also buy a Chrysler Sebring convertible but nixed that plan when I saw them cave in to the Obama Administration and the unions. Screw ‘em, they ain’t never gettin’ my money.
So I loved Ford’s no-bailout ad – it’s effect will far outlast the Obama misAdministration and the Democrat Party.

The guy on the commercial in an interview today:
“I still standby what I said, and that is, as Americans, we need to decide if we’re going to be run by a government or if we’re going to be run by free enterprise,” he told host Frank Beckmann. “That’s really the debate that we’re facing today. So I applaud Ford, still, to this day, for having the courage to put that ad on the TV and spur the debate.
I was interviewed for about two, two-and-a-half hours, and that was the 30 seconds Ford chose to put on there, and I’m grateful for their courage. We do operate in a world that has many moving parts, so I understand the decision, although I am a little disappointed.”
If I were a VP of marketing at Toyota I’d be on the phone with him right now offering him a Tundra in exchange for his F150 and a commercial to go along with it.

Obama’s proposed fuel economy target is 54.5 mpg by 2025, nearly double what it is today. The estimated cost to manufacturers is roughly $230 billion dollars. If the government is going to demand companies spend money to reach those standards, it makes sense that the government chip in a few bucks. It makes much better sense, however, to let the market decide what vehicles consumers want to buy and what they’ll pay for increased fuel economy. No government mandate and no loans or subsidies either. And any company that can’t compete goes under. No. More. Bailouts.

Companies aren’t about making political statements. If you have a CEO who puts politics before business – time to get a new CEO.
No – it ain’t right. But when the White House and the “Big Guy” start calling up threatening to place your company under greater scrutiny – that’s when you make a deal. That’s the name of the game.
I loved the Ford ad – it was really was a great one. However, I knew they were kicking a hornet’s nest when they ran it. Sure enough – the Obama Administration delivered. I think it makes Obama look cheap and wimpy – but I can’t blame Ford for pulling the ad if they got pressure from the Oval Office.
I had a lawyer once tell me … “You never want to piss off the government. You can look at John Gotti and you can look at Edwin Edwards, and a host of others. You may win some battles – but you will not win the war. The government has overwhelming resources and they are tenacious enough to keep hounding you for decades – or as long as it takes for them to get the dirt on you. For the government – IT’S PERSONAL.”
