New Fast & Furious document: ATF bought guns with taxpayer money and sold them to illegal buyers directly

posted at 4:45 pm on September 26, 2011 by Allahpundit

In case anyone’s still bitterly clinging to the “botched sting” theory of this clusterfark, cling no longer:

According to documents obtained by Fox News, Agent John Dodson was ordered to buy six semi-automatic Draco pistols — two of those were purchased at the Lone Wolf gun store in Peoria, Ariz. An unusual sale, Dodson was sent to the store with a letter of approval from David Voth, an ATF group supervisor.

Dodson then sold the weapons to known illegal buyers, while fellow agents watched from their cars nearby.

This was not a “buy-bust” or a sting operation, where police sell to a buyer and then arrest them immediately afterward. In this case, agents were “ordered” to let the sale go through and follow the weapons to a stash house.

According to sources directly involved in the case, Dodson felt strongly that the weapons should not be abandoned and the stash house should remain under 24-hour surveillance. However, Voth disagreed and ordered the surveillance team to return to the office. Dodson refused, and for six days in the desert heat kept the house under watch, defying direct orders from Voth.

A week later, a second vehicle showed up to transfer the weapons. Dodson called for an interdiction team to move in, make the arrest and seize the weapons. Voth refused and the guns disappeared with no surveillance.

Here’s the PDF of the alleged letter from Voth authorizing the purchase by Dodson. For context on what’s going on here, you need to read this post at Sipsey Street Irregulars, which has been covering Fast & Furious relentlessly and apparently got a copy of Voth’s letter before even Fox News did. According to SSI, Dodson had made clear his opposition to Fast & Furious to his colleagues at the Phoenix ATF office even before he was tasked to make this purchase. Why choose him for the assignment then? Because, the theory goes, Voth figured that by involving Dodson in the scheme directly, he’d keep quiet about it going forward if only to protect himself. Dodson, it’s assumed, realized that it was a set up, which is why he demanded something in writing from Voth documenting that he ordered the purchase. In fact, SSI claims there’s a second letter from Voth authorizing Dodson to puchase two more pistols and, what’s more, that both Darrell Issa and Grassley have copies of the letters. Two obvious questions, then. First, why hasn’t Issa been trumpeting this letter? He hasn’t been shy about unloading on the DOJ for other sins. Is he still trying to authenticate it or is he simply holding back for the time being for strategic reasons, possibly to see if others come forward? Second, if Voth’s letter is what it appears to be, why would he put the authorization in writing given the risk that it might be used against him later? Isn’t there some other way he could have arranged the purchase without getting his fingerprints on it, like, say, by tasking a third agent to write his own letter to buy the guns and then have Dodson sell them to the illegal buyers in order to “dirty him up”?

Here’s an interview with Dodson from back in March. He hasn’t turned up on the news lately because — well, read the SSI post for that.

No wonder we’ve had an uptick in the number of armed Mexican military personnel crossing our borders in the past couple years. They are merely trying to protect their people from Obama/Holder’s DoJ.

coldwarrior on September 26, 2011 at 4:58 PM

If a Republican president’s DOJ did this, we’d be treated to endless news stories featuring the families of those killed with these weapons, lots of tears and anger, and calls for the president’s head. But when a democrat president’s corrupt DOJ gets a bunch of people killed, they are just collateral damage in service to the president’s anti-gun agenda. A whole lotta folks should go to prison over this.

Another whistleblower agent, Vince Cefalu, once remarked that “the only way to track the [Fast and Furious] guns would be with crime scenes and dead bodies.” Does that observation hold true for the guns directly supplied to the cartels by ATF agents working undercover as straw buyers?

Weight of Glory on September 26, 2011 at 5:45 PM

Glad that the “Eye Of Sauron” got a contact lens now.

ProudPalinFan on September 26, 2011 at 5:46 PM

And we are back to the question of who would benefit the most out of such a program. Assuming it went undetected, that is.

If there was a great interest in catching buyers of illegal weapons, there would have been no issue. Stongs of this nature happen all of the time, and an arrest is made right after the purchase to prevent the contraband from going anywhere else.

One of the reasons offered was that they were more interested in buyers up the line; the kingpins. If you are gunning for for buyers up the chain, you keep a constant watch on the contraband. Not only eyes on it. Technology today provides some marvelous alternatives. Tracking devices small enough to be concealed in shipments or in the stocks of rifles.

And of course, if you believe there is a chance that what you are watching might slip away, there are ways to disable firearms or render them inoperative. Removing a firing pin, welding a part here or there. It still appears to be a working firearm, but rendered inoperative.

None of these precautions appear to have been taken. So why?

One possibility is the political motive – the whole “90% of the firerams seized by Mexican authorities came from the US” canard had some serious holes shot in it when it was revealed that this was far from the truth. Cartels prefer automatic weapons, and those are widely available from places like South America, the Middle East (yes, drug cartels do partner up with terror groups) and the far East. And the truth be told, the real number was closer to 12% or so.

One can increase a percentage by increasing the numerator. Certainly, if more US originated firearms started showing up in Mexico, the actual percentages wouold also increase. And sudden jumps are fuel for basing a renewed crackdown on dramatic recent increases. When an administration has a track record of being stymied in its gun control efforts by a pesky Constitutional Amendment and a strong lobby on the other side, a public opinion swaying headline highlighting some clear and present danger can do just the trick.

Was there a political agenda here? Who can say with any degree of certainty. Could have been an outbreak of brain eating mad cow for all we know. But when you look at it from the perspective of who benefits the most, the pieces for political manipulation seem to fit.

Gunwalker bombshell–”there never was a ‘sting’”
http://www.examiner.com/conservative-in-national/gunwalker-bombshell-there-never-was-a-sting

An ATF source has provided reporters a copy of a letter sent on June 1, 2010 which indicates that the monumental scandal known as ‘Project Gunwalker,’ or ‘Operation Fast and Furious,’ was never a sting operation as previously reported. If such an allegation is true, then the official Obama Administration explanation for the operation is entirely false.

Colbyjack on September 26, 2011 at 5:53 PM

Dodson called for an interdiction team to move in, make the arrest and seize the weapons. Voth refused and the guns disappeared with no surveillance.

and subsequently bloodied the hands of everyone involved…..

ted c on September 26, 2011 at 5:54 PM

If I recall, the Democrats made a big stink about something similar around 1987. Guess it’s all cool now.

Jim-Rose on September 26, 2011 at 5:57 PM

These revelations place the investigation into Gunwalker in an entirely different light. This is no longer about a ‘sting operation gone bad’ but a deliberate, sinister attempt to manipulate gun statistics in Mexico for political gain.

Further, CBS News has issued several stinging reports over the past few days that cast even more dark shadows over the ATF Fast and Furious operation. The NRA’s Wayne LaPierre granted an interview in which he stated that Gunwalker was never intended to become public knowledge and that when it did go public the cover-up undertaken by the Administration was massive. In addition, secret tapes recently made public show that ATF officials considered the agent who blew the whistle on the agency’s illegal operation to be ‘toxic.’

Question – which is the worst part of this story:

1). That taxpayer funds were used in an attempt to subvert the 2nd amendment?
2). That this was essentially an act of war with Mexico?
3). That the administration had deaths – including Officer Brian Terry – as result of this ‘operation’?
4). The stonewalling and cover-up of the scandal?
5). Complicity by the media in attempting to keep this story under wraps?

Trent Franks

U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., wants the Obama administration to release all its documents and data for its ill-fated Operation Fast and Furious gun-running investigation.

Franks made the request today as Republicans press the White House on the gun investigation. That investigation involved trying to track guns purchased in Arizona and other states by straw buyers and then transported back to Mexico for use by drug cartels.

I stumbled across this link regarding Gunwalker. This person has done an extraordinary job at timelining these events/stories back to 2009. Very detailed and almost day by day updates with lots of links. fyi

Duplication in Government Programs Costs Taxpayers at Least $100 Billion
Mar 1 2011
************

House Republicans could fulfill their Pledge to America promise of cutting $100 billion simply by eliminating duplicative government programs. That’s the startling news from a new Government Accountability Office report today that exposes widespread waste in the federal government.

GAO’s 345-page report (PDF) was initiated more than a year ago when Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) forced a 94-0 Senate vote on the issue. Now, each year GAO must identify federal programs, agencies, offices and initiatives with duplicative goals and activities. It’s up to Congress to act, but given the recent desire to cut spending, there is no shortage of waste — at least $100 billion, according to Coburn’s estimate.

The supposed rationale for this allegedly botched cluster**** is nonsense at best, and most likely a thinly-veiled lie.

How was this ever going to work?

Do we have assets in Mexico that could have tracked these weapons had they been ordered to do so?

It’s BOGUS.

There was nothing botched about it, except that the thing went public in a way unintended by the powers-that-be.

This is worse than shameful; it’s downright criminal — not to mention immoral, dishonest, underhanded and gobstoppingly stupid.

Someone needs to be held to account, and it needn’t stop at the ass’t secretary level if the facts warrant/

I’m going to go now and prepare for my audit.

It’s bogus on its face. Like Dodson did, he kept eyes on the last known location of the weapons x 6 days in the AZ desert. Once he lost sight of them, *POOF*, there is no more “tracking” of them until they turn up at a crime scene or a traffic stop.

Not only did U.S. officials approve, allow and assist in the sale of more than 2,000 guns to the Sinaloa cartel — the federal government used taxpayer money to buy semi-automatic weapons, sold them to criminals and then watched as the guns disappeared.

there are some Mexican lawyers licking their chops right now. Mr. O has gone around the world saying “I’m sorry” to lots of countries. Well, if there is an appropriate time for that, it just might be now. There’s some esplainin’ that needs to be done, to Mexico, and the US citizens.

Second, if Voth’s letter is what it appears to be, why would he put the authorization in writing given the risk that it might be used against him later?

Because he [Voth] was under pressure from his superior to get this done.

Agent Dodson sensed that something was going on, sensed that an illegal operation/order was being given him, and demanded a written order.

let’s see Voth’s letter..……..hmmmm?

ted c on September 26, 2011 at 6:20 PM

ATF bought guns with taxpayer money — yeah-yeah, we figured that out weeks ago…

and sold them to illegal buyers directly — ‘SOLD ‘EM? Like, for cash? Really?
_THAT_ is wildly surprising!!

Another example why gov’t shouldn’t try to run a business.
