Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on September 23, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama seemed a little confused in his UN speech Wednesday. Obama sang the joys of non-violent change, but picked … well, an odd example or two:

The Qaddafi regime is over. Gbagbo, Ben Ali, Mubarak are no longer in power. Osama bin Laden is gone, and the idea that change could only come through violence has been buried with him.

Er, maybe the President doesn’t recall this, but Qaddafi’s regime is only “over” — we hope — because NATO bombed the hell out of his army and Libyans fought a war of rebellion for the last several months.  If Obama has forgotten, it would be strange indeed, since he’s the man who ordered the bombing to start in the first place.  What is that if not “change through violence”?

And for that matter, we didn’t exactly end Osama bin Laden’s career as a terrorist through FTD arrangements and a box of chocolates, either. (h/t HA reader Rob Rob)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I had to re-read that response…

wow

cmsinaz on September 23, 2011 at 8:14 AM

When liberals bomb people , they do it gently, in a nuanced way.
That way the dead folks aren’t as dead as they would be if some go-it-alone cowboy bombed them, and they have much higher self-esteem.

Yeah, that’s the ticket.

peace through strength is not a part of his vocabulary….

Osama bin Laden is gone, and the idea that change could only come through violence has been buried with him.

we can bury ideas? who knew….

ted c on September 23, 2011 at 8:17 AM

The only way that would have been funnier is if I had been said while in a room full of diplomats, in the middle of a photo shoot, while waving….

Not much worse that insulting someone’s stupidity w/ a typo! Shame on me.

sheesh on September 23, 2011 at 8:19 AM

What is that if not “change through violence”?

Peace through strategic military actions. Or something.

crazy_legs on September 23, 2011 at 8:20 AM

They don’t give you the Nobel Peace Prize for nothimg.

Obama Gaffe at the bridge @ 4:09 The Intercontinental Railroad? Did it connect Massachusetts with France or San Francisco with Tokyo. It was called the Transcontinental Railroad. This is the third time Obama has made this mistake. What do you think the reaction would be If Bush made these repeated errors?

I think that you may have to do Obamateurisms of the Hour with each passing day, Ed.

RDE2010 on September 23, 2011 at 8:23 AM

Remember, violence promotes hostility:

Vinny Gambini: Your Honor, may I have permission to treat Ms. Vito as a hostile witness?

Mona Lisa Vito: You think I’m hostile now, wait ’til you see me tonight.

Rovin on September 23, 2011 at 8:24 AM

Also, apparently the “no change through violence” doesn’t include the assaults that happened in Egypt… Or the rioting and looting. Or the rape… Or the virginity checks.

Yep, no violence there.

And here I thought Ahmadinejad would be the funniest part of the UN General assembly again….

mjk on September 23, 2011 at 8:26 AM

You have to wonder how many translations of the word “MORON” secretly went through the earpieces of all the delegates at that moment.

pilamaye on September 23, 2011 at 8:26 AM

Arrogant SOB.Goes to the UN to tout how he “got” all these “violent” leaders without “violence” by violently dropping tons and tons of bombs on them and shooting a pitiful recluse hiding in a flop house in the face. Brave Sir Barry…..

sandee on September 23, 2011 at 8:27 AM

We blew a fist-sized hole through the back of Osama bin Laden’s head…that seems to have been “change” brought about through violence.

And yes, we dropped tons of ordnance on top of Ghadaffi and his minions…if that wasn’t violent, then they certainly have changed the definition.

Yes, it was change through the application of violence, nothing less.

But, the liberals do it with compassion and feeling.

Not like those nasty right-wingers who do it because they like it or something.

I truly believe the man, this guy they call “president,” is delusional.

Yeah, sure, that’s what he says now but let’s hear him say it directly to Trumka’s face. That’s commitment!

Now THAT I would have watched. I didn’t know he was doing musical speeches now. Killing them softly with his song?

myrenovations on September 23, 2011 at 8:44 AM

Remember, Obama has said he is a better speechwriter than his speechwriters. He probably wrote most of it himself. He told Harry Reid, “Harry, I have a gift”.
He also said he is a better campaign manager than his campaign staff.

If you want to hear the sheer lunacy around this president listen to Valerie Jarrett’s love mots to Barack as read by me (sorry about my accent) in this video:

Well, if your American audiences are stupid enough to believe double speak, and lies, and continue to shill for him…why not the world audience? Obama probably thinks they’re even more ignorant, and will lap up the milk he serves.

Hahahaha, no. We invaded his home in the dark of night, shot him in the face and dumped him to sleep with the fishes. Nothing violent about that. Good riddance to bad rubbish, but yea, I’d say that was pretty violent.

Osama bin Laden is gone, and the idea that change could only come through violence has been buried with him.

Osama’s life was changed by Obama’s violence.

So, Mr. Change Without Violence, what’s your plan for nonviolently changing the violent leader of Iran?

Steve Z on September 23, 2011 at 10:36 AM

Also, apparently the “no change through violence” doesn’t include the assaults that happened in Egypt… Or the rioting and looting. Or the rape… Or the virginity checks.
Yep, no violence there.
mjk on September 23, 2011 at 8:26 AM

Yep.

Change to a Marxist like O means revolutionary social change not change change. He sees everything through the lens of class conflict/class struggle. Whatever violence occurs in pursuit of a class struggle for change is okay and something which can be romanticized but wars are bad because they involve imperialist oppressors. Thus his convoluted explanations, which make perfect sense to people mentored by Frank, Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers and the like, but are nonsensical gobbledygook to the rest of us.

Sir Napsalot on September 23, 2011 at 11:15 AM

It is very touching that Obama didn’t think Osama came to a violent end.

It is also a warning for the rest of you folks. Just think what kind of scenario that Obama would consider someone succumbs to a violent end …… Maybe Rhambo taught him a few things……

Sir Napsalot on September 23, 2011 at 11:23 AM

Zero learned all these peaceful tactics from his very peaceful neighbors in Chicago. Thanks to the dear Ayres family down the street.

dragondrop on September 23, 2011 at 11:29 AM

Little Bammie is completely dependent on his writers that load his words into the teleprompter. Without them he is lost, struck mute. As his staff trickles away like his economic team did, competent replacements will not take those jobs because they smell the rot in the White House.

It’s going to get much worse. Maybe we’ll need an Obamateurism of the AM and PM.

slickwillie2001 on September 23, 2011 at 11:55 AM

Then again, compared to the “Chicago Way,” maybe all this is non-violent!

Pablo Snooze on September 23, 2011 at 1:46 PM
