Newsmax: Christie’s thinking of getting in; Update: Christie advisor denies

posted at 7:00 pm on September 23, 2011 by Allahpundit

I lost patience with the Christie speculation weeks ago but I’m going to make an exception for this for three very good reasons. One: It’s late Friday afternoon and I need some easy traffic bait. Mission accomplished. Two: Perry reeked last night. A month ago, it seemed entirely possible that he’d stomp Romney in the debates and have the nomination locked up by early fall. As it is, Romney’s at 44.9 on InTrade right now while Perry’s wheezing along at 27. Plenty of room for an even alpha-er alpha male (or female) to jump in and start stomping. Three: Newsmax is a player in right-wing media and might have an inside track here. And they’re not the only ones. Perennial Christie booster Bill Kristol told a CPAC audience this afternoon in Florida, “I know Chris Christie is thinking about it,” and earlier today at the Heritage Foundation Mitch Daniels called Christie “the best example that I can think of” when asked who fits the bill for bold conservative leadership that the country needs. My sense is that these guys are pushing because they have reason to believe that Christie’s still ever so slightly open to running. Verrrrry slightly. But slightly.

Anyway. As disappointment with Perry mounts, so does the pining for ChristieRyanDanielsRubio:

Newsmax has learned that the effort to draft Christie culminated in a hush-hush powwow held in the past week with Christie and several notable Republican billionaires.

A source familiar with the meeting suggested that Christie seemed inclined to enter the race but said he needed more time.

Christie promised to make a final decision “within two weeks,” the source said…

Senior aides to Christie have been quietly urging his supporters not to commit to Perry, indicating Christie was still mulling a bid and would make a final decision after New Jersey’s legislative races are completed in November.

That last bit suggests either that the story’s wrong or that Christie’s a doofus since the deadline to get on the ballot in Florida is October 31. Anyway: Explain to me again why he’d supposedly be such a gangbusters candidate in the primary. He is, to be sure, a supremely gifted messenger on entitlements and public-employee unions, and he’s already accomplished something significant vis-a-vis the latter. Beyond that, what’s the argument for his candidacy? He’s been governor for just two and a half years, he believes in global warming, he’s questionable on guns, he seems to support comprehensive immigration reform, he backed Castle over O’Donnell (RINO!), etc. That’s not to say he can’t win — if we were willing to nominate McCain, we could nominate Christie — but I’m not sure why anyone thinks he’d necessarily settle far north of, say, 25 percent. He’d be dynamite at the debates, but the debates don’t matter much except to hardcore political junkies like you and me. Why risk running now and flaming out instead of staying put as governor, building a record, and then steamrolling into the 2016 primaries when he wouldn’t have to face a Democratic incumbent in the general?

Update: And here’s the obligatory official denial.

I want Perry to get his act together so bad. I’ve watched a whole lot of Perry YouTube videos where his relaxed and acting like himself, and he is 10x the Perry of last night. He is a quality guy, and he can do this, but his handlers have to stop trying to mold Perry into this polished, rehearsed, mechanical RomneyBot.

I totally agree. You can’t program people, it comes out fake and you take away the personality that people are attracted to them in the first place.

We don’t want a Hollywood Scripted Actor!!

I think the desperation is coming from Mitt looking like he is getting ready to seal it up

El_Terrible on September 23, 2011 at 7:51 PM

maybe but that doesn’t take into account that Mitt is unable to break 20% in recent polls and the Marist poll had him at 13%. the establishment has a deep distrust that Mitt can seal the deal one of the main reasons I think they flocked to Perry early. but with Perry flaming out in the debates it looks like they ar enow in search mode again.

Looking through my crystal ball, I made my latest predictions earlier this morning:

1. I expect a rash of polls and articles over the weekend and the coming week all designed to show that “Perry is finished” and “Romney is the de-facto nominee”.

2. The polls will tighten again but I expect Perry to maintain a slim lead. It’s still a two man race although nearing parity.

3. The media-contrived clamor for Palin to get in and the favorable reviews will diminish as they work off the assumption that Perry is finished.

4. Romney lost the Hispanic/immigrant vote last night. Perry won it if he is the GOP nominee.

Many Americans are rightfully emotional about the tuition issue but discount how emotional those groups are about the issue. They believe it involves children who are here through no fault of their own and should be off limits. They shouldn’t be made to bear the brunt of their parents’ crimes especially when both parties refuse to deal with the status/cimes of the parents.

TheRightMan on September 23, 2011 at 10:41 AM

Prediction (1) is already panning out if you have been following the news. (2) will be seen next week when the first batch of polls after the debate come out.

Hopefully by next week, Palin will put her die-hard supporters on this forum out of their misery by announcing she is NOT running. In any case, watch for the media to start to lay off their encouragement for her to run in accordance with (3).

Romney will lose Florida to Perry in the GOP primary in accordance with (4).

The only reason I haven’t sent him something yet is due to SP. But if she stays on the sidelines he’s definitely in for some. I may even do it while I await her final decision. I’d love to see him take on Soetoro in a debate.
But he does have a big uphill climb.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Standard & Poor’s lowered its credit rating on New Jersey’s debt to AA- from AA, citing concerns about its massive retirement obligations.

“The lower rating reflects our concern regarding the stresses from the state’s poorly funded pension system, substantial post-employment benefit obligations, and above-average debt levels,” said Standard & Poor’s Credit Analyst Jeffrey Panger.

aug/2011

Fitch Ratings downgrades the State of New Jersey’s outstanding general obligation (GO) bonds to ‘AA-’ from ‘AA’.

Fitch also downgrades to ‘AA-’ from ‘AA’ the rating on the Garden State Preservation Trust’s open space revenue bonds. Additionally, Fitch downgrades to ‘A+’ from ‘AA-’ the ratings on the state’sappropriation-backed debt and other related debt, which is detailed at the endof this release.

The Rating Outlook for all affected bonds is revised to Stable from Negative

Objectively speaking, Perry royally screwed it last night (I support Perry). Palin is still badly damaged from her 08 interviews and when she resigned after 2 years. Regardless, I’m not counting either two out, but I think its more likely that we’re stuck with Romney.

hmmm Cain is finished…he stands about as much chance of winning the nomination as Nader. the establishment doesn’t fear Perry. Many of the establishment are endorsing him left and right at least they were before his destruction at the OK corral debate last night. Long game? the only Ace Perry still has to play his is money connections and while his money might keep him in the game his inability to close the deal early opens him up to mitt’s long game. And has his policies and record becomes common knowledge the conservative base leaves him for a new flaovr of the month. Like they did to Cain, Bachmann, Mitch, ryan, Pence and on and on.

You very well might see the real Perry in the next few debates.

I predicted that Perry would come swinging out in attack mode after playing defense in the previous debates. He did and the debate turned out to be more of a slugfest between him and Romney.

Unfortunately, he’s been alone in attacking Romney so far with the so-called “conservatives” Bachmann and Santorum lobbying hard to become Mitt’s VP.

Was I alone in noticing that Bachmann sounded subdued last night? Maybe Mitt told her he had stricken her off his list after her visit to loony “Gardasil” territory. :).

Perry has been under pressure putting his campaign structures in place and playing catchup to a Romney campaign that has been running since 2006. That, and his back, has been having a bit of a toll on him.

Perry will actually benefit from the race tightening a bit more and more focus being placed on Romney, hopefully. And the thing with Romney is the more people see him – the less they like him.

Long story short: Illegal alien, brought into Florida at age 9. Went through the P.S. System, graduated, speaks fluent English. Gets injured on the job. Can cite his SSN with ease; he has had it since age 12. He is now 35. He had no clue that he was ever brought here illegally. Has a wife, 3 kids, a house and a yard; works hard as a supervisor at a mfg plant.

The man literally had no clue that he had an invalid SSN.

What are we going to do with these people? This issue crosses several political administrations… Carter, Clintoon, Bush, Obama.

He’s a good man and a goods governor who was persuaded/pushed/cajoled into running by two overlapping groups: those that thought Romney was too vulnerable and needed some competition and those who wanted to see Palin remain forever on the sidelines.

Key West Reader on September 23, 2011 at 8:11 PM

That’s just it, there is not easy solution, logistically or politically, or it would have been done already. The federal government is mandated to secure our borders. Both GOP and Dems have failed miserably at this. The border states end up with all of the expense and problems that come along with the issue. The states can not secure the border or become proactive because if they do, they will be sued, like Arizona, by the federal government.

I know many will disagree, but there is no sense in rounding up 15 million people and sending them back to Mexico when the border remains unsecured. Nor is it possible, logistically.

I live in Texas and among illegal immigrants. I don’t like the situation because I believe everyone should follow the law. They are literally changing parts of Texas where they live where you feel you are in Mexico and not in America any longer.

I spent time working beside Hispanics in a border town for half a decade. I will tell you that I absolutely respect the Hispanic peoples. They are family oriented, spiritual, kind and hard working people, for the most part. I can not say that I blame them for wanting for their families to survive and to enjoy the opportunities and safety that we enjoy as Americans. But I sternly believe they need to do so, legally. How this is achieved remains to be seen.

that works for me. *smiles*

I’ve never considered Christie to be “iffy.” I just think Rubio would be his best choice. In fact, I think Rubio would be the best choice NO MATTER who wins the nomination.

nickj116 on September 23, 2011 at 8:15 PM

Marco Rubio’s parents escaped Communist Cuba. President Ronald Reagan supported their immigration, integration and subsequent positive influence in America. In 1981 Communist Cuba put their jail inmates on boats and floated them to Miami. What did Miami and America do? They welcomed the refugees.

That’s a far cry from Mexicans jumping fences, heading up drug cartels, looking to expand their drug enterprise vs. Cubans escaping tyranny under Castro. Taking American’s jobs; undercutting bidding and building sub-par housing through Clintoon’s FHA; homes taht sit atop sink holes due to poor surveying studies.

There must be some sort of a solution to the Mexican illegal immigration issue. This should be debated and discussed, but it is not and has not been discussed. All we are doing is re-hashing debatable talking points without proposed solutions.

Key West Reader on September 23, 2011 at 8:22 PM

Well according to some here, we’re supposed to make them “self-deport” by taking away the goodies.

Seriously, I have no idea.

Knucklehead on September 23, 2011 at 8:19 PM

Obama is making them self deport. I know tons of illegal immigrants who have gone back to Mexico because of no work.

Eventually, I would split the baby in half. No pathway to citizenship for any illegal immigrants. Half go home, half stay. Priority goes to better educated, job holding, no criminal record people.

Something to think about: We started out this primary season a few months ago, and most of us including myself saw Newt as a non-starter because of his pandering to the Warmists. Now as the more promising, newer generation of candidates are hitting the streets we are finding out that each one has a major flaw.

Newt still has baggage, but if we are going to give Perry a pass on illegal aliens, or Mitt a pass on Romneycare, etc, maybe we should give Newt a pass on AGW, presuming that he can assure us that he’s no longer a believer.

slickwillie2001 on September 23, 2011 at 8:30 PM

carbon_footprint on September 23, 2011 at 8:21 PM

So, we agree. This is such a mess. There must be a viable solution. Conservative, moderate, democrat doesn’t matter. We have to solve a dilemma.

That is the debatable issue that should share ideas, visions and solutions. So? Where do we start?

A starting point:

Allow a 9 month window for illegals to “come clean”. How did you enter? Who were your sponsors? How did you get here? Were you abused?

Why are you here? What do you seek? Were you recruited? Where are the tunnels; how did you get here?

Do you want to be American Citizens? Do you want to learn our language? What is your goal? Why would you leave your Country?

Oh, the list. It goes on and on.

Bottom line? This sh*t started before Carter. It won’t end well unless we address it. And, in my humble opinion? I think Perry is right for MAKING us face it.

Key West Reader on September 23, 2011 at 8:31 PM

Why should he back down on his immigration position? Can’t we have an honest politician for once who says what he means and means what he says.

1. Perry supports border security but thinks the solution is NOT a fence.

2. Perry is anti-illegal immigration but believes kids brought here by their illegal parents and who have finished high school in Texas should not be discriminated against when attending college. Obviously, the whole Texas Legislature agreed with him.

Romney tells you what you want to hear with regards to illegal immigration. Good luck getting him to build you a fence and deport all illegal immigrants, if he does become President.

I can just imagine Romney in cowboy boots supervising the construction of a 1254-mile fence manned by lions and wolves. LOL…

I wouldn’t see why his application for U.S. Citizenship could not be fast tracked, considering all of the factors involved. If I were him, I would contact the U.S. House Representative or U.S. Senator to see if they could aid in this.

bluefox on September 23, 2011 at 8:35 PM

Good question – the “smartest” people in the country have yet to find one that is reasonable and will work.

gophergirl on September 23, 2011 at 8:21 PM

I have an idea, but it’s not that great:

- Establish amnesty courts.
- Create a new visa category, something like “provisional pending alien residency”.
- Establish criteria for immediate deportation or granting of provisional visa (yes, this = amnesty):
– Any criminal convictions: Immediate deportation.
– On welfare for more than 6 months: Immediate deportation.
– Held a job with a W-2 or 1099 for more than 6 months: Provisional visa.
– Married to someone who has held a job with a W-2 or 1099 for more than 6 months: Provisional visa.
(here’s where I get all racist and stuff)
– Any evidence of gang affiliation, including gang tattoos: Immediate deportation.
– Affiliation with La Raza, MeCha, or any other supremacist group: Immediate deportation.
– Under the age of 65 and cannot demonstrate at least a tourist-phrasebook level of English proficiency: Immediate deportation.

The problems are many:

- We’d probably have to recruit as many retired judges as possible to serve on the amnesty court, because our court system is already desperately overburdened.
- This creates yet another sclerotic bureaucracy with a large potential for corruption.
- It won’t work at all without locking down the “revolving door” at the border first.

I am, of course, a racist. And so are all y’all for even reading this.

He also made us look seriously at Social Security reform.

He is killing himself, doing it, but we are having the conversation, as a nation.

We still have a long, long way to go. Lots will happen. Perry drops off the radar, this may be a good thing for him in the long run. Who knows.

I am very disappointed in his debate performances. He needs to get a little fire in the belly and fight Romney and Romney’s little attack chihuahuas–Santorum and Bachmann.

The reason is, that he never even knew that he WASN’T a U.S. Citizen. I had to break it to him.

Not only did he lose his job but he lost his WC medical coverage. So, he’s stuck with a broken knee and nowhere to go; he had no idea, no inkling that he was even illegal in the first place. He’s 35. Now he has no job, no way to earn a living, an injured knee, 3 kids and a wife. And now he finds out he’s illegal. And will be deported.

Sorry, Newt and Romney won’t change a thing about the status quo. Perry will.

Newt’s intelligence is just fine and dandy until he turns it against you and tells you to shut up and accept Dede Scozzafava.

Romney just WANTS to be President and a bipartisan one – loved by the media/Dems/RINOs. The lobbyists love him, the Dems love him, and if he wins – life will go on as usual for them. Will he expend political capital to repeal Obamacare and build a border fence? You can believe that as surely as unicorns exist…

Perry, on the other hand, is everything the media/Dems/RINOs hate. He went to the “wrong” school and does not mix with the right crowd. Did I mention that the trial lawyers hate him (csdeven, where are you?)?
