Obama pitches jobs bill in front of bridge that won’t benefit from jobs bill

posted at 7:05 pm on September 22, 2011 by Allahpundit

Go figure. Remember, this is the same guy who was surprised to learn there’s no such thing as “shovel-ready projects” for public works after he signed a nearly $800 billion stimulus.

Although some press accounts have described Brent Spence as “crumbling,” and the White House says it’s an example of “ur gently needed” repairs, the bridge isn’t falling apart. In fact, it’s designed to last for decades more.

It is, however, “functionally obsolete,” which in this case means it’s too small to handle the daily traffic load. While designed to handle 85,000 cars and trucks, it now carries more than 150,000, leading to regular backups.

So the plan isn’t to do extensive repairs on the bridge, but to build an entirely new one right next to it and keep the old one in use.

The problem is that construction work on the $2.3 billion bridge isn’t scheduled to start for three or four years, according to the project’s official website.

That would appear to put it outside the “immediate” timetable in Obama’s jobs bill, which requires the Transportation secretary to “obligate” all the highway funds “not later than two years after enactment” of the bill.

Here’s video of him in front of the bridge today, following Maxine Waters’s advice to “fight” by stuttering his way to class-warrior glory. Speaking of things that are crumbling: His approval’s at 39/57 in Florida, which not long ago was a swing state if you can believe it, and a new Democratic poll of 60 battleground congressional districts held by Republicans finds that 50 percent support the GOP incumbent compared to 41 percent who support a Democratic challenger — a slight increase since the midterms last year. The One’s approval rating in those districts? Just 41 percent. Good luck, progressives. Exit quotation from a House Democrat who wanted to be anonymous for obvious reasons: “It didn’t have to be this way. Obama’s presidency has fizzled. It’s going to be every person for himself in 2012. There just won’t be any coattails, and any effect he does have on the ballot will hurt us.”

Opps, he did it again and seeing the video is even worse than reading the transcript because he pauses while he tries to think of the correct word. He has said Intercontinental Railroad instead of the correct Transcontinental Railroad several times.

Now, we used to have the best infrastructure in the world here in America. We’re the country that built the Intercontinental Railroad, the Interstate Highway System. (Applause.) We built the Hoover Dam. We built the Grand Central Station. (Applause.) So how can we now sit back and let China build the best railroads? And let Europe build the best highways? And have Singapore build a nicer airport? At a time when we’ve got millions of unemployed construction workers out there just ready to get on the job, ready to do the work to rebuilding America. (Applause.)

I vaguely remember there was a law that trucks had to use the bypass around Cincy.

I don’t think it was ever enforced, and I know it is picking a nit, but it been annoying me all week.

This is all I could find on it:

Since through trucks and RVs are prohibited on I-71 and I-75 northbound through northern Kentucky into Cincinnati, and also prohibited on I-471, I-275 is the route which through trucks and RVs must use.

A deceptive speech about a bridge that is not crumbling is just one more thing will make President Obama a ball & chain on the ankle of every Democrat running in the next round of Federal, state and local elections.

The Democrat Party is in the process of self-destructing.

While designed to handle 85,000 cars and trucks, it now carries more than 150,000, leading to regular backups.

So, a major route that already has more traffic than it was designed to handle is brought to a dead stop so that this schmuck can use the bridge as a backdrop for a campaign photo op.

Good job there, Bammy! I’m sure this will endear you to the good people of Cincinnati.

I have family in Cincinnati and they say the Brent Spence is not an old bridge (40+ years is no big deal)and it’s not crumbling. Hell, Cincinnati still uses the Roebling Suspension bridge and it’s the oldest of it’s type in the world, built a decade after the Civil War. The Brent Spence is just too small to handle the interstate traffic and there are backups all the time.

And so THIS is the spot that HE chooses to make HIS speech, right on the cusp of rush hour, with law enforcement forced to shut down alternate routes around what is a daily point of major conjestion for HIS security.

My cousin saw it coming and left work an hour early, but he still got stuck a bit and almost missed picking up the kids at the bus stop. Lots of families got screwed yesterday. There’s plenty of bitching in Cincinnati from yesterday’s commute.

Jackass.

Cricket624 on September 23, 2011 at 8:52 AM

We’re the country that built the Intercontinental Railroad,

Intercontinental means “between continents”. Continents are separated by oceans. Does Barry want us to build a floating train?

Steve Z on September 23, 2011 at 9:38 AM

From the Investor’s Business Daily article:

The big holdup on the bridge so far hasn’t been money but bureaucratic inertia. Ohio, Kentucky and the federal government started working on the project 10 years ago — and have used about $2 million in federal funds — yet the new bridge is still more than 10 years away from completion.

The reason, transportation experts say, is the labyrinth of rules and red tape to navigate to get a major road project under way, a chaotic financing system, and a federal approval process that, as one expert put it, “can be astronomically nightmarish.”

So when will Obama relax the rules and red tape to get the parallel bridge built?

If the existing bridge is structurally sound but too narrow, build an identical bridge parallel to the existing bridge and have traffic flow in one direction over the old bridge, the opposite direction over the new bridge.

If the new bridge is identical to the old bridge, this saves engineering costs–find the old plans and do it again.

But what does this engineer know about building bridges–the O-genius whose college grades are unknown MUST have a better idea!!!
