Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on September 21, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Put this one in the Not Grasping The Concept category:

MSNBC’s Rich Shulman quipped that “I don’t know much about diplomatic protocols, but I would guess that waving during the group photo is something to avoid.”  From this photo, it looks like 29 out of 30 global leaders agree. (h/t HA reader Carmen P)

Addendum: In case readers wonder whether this is on the level, Zombie at PJ Tatler probed the image’s authenticity and concludes it’s on the level. I’m pretty sure that MSNBC wouldn’t have posted a photoshop that makes Obama look bad, either.

Update: I’ve confirmed that the picture is authentic — by purchasing it from Getty Images.  Unless Getty’s into photoshops, it’s on the level.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

the_nile on September 21, 2011 at 8:34 AM

If I was going to wave in a picture, which I have before, I would wave in front of my body when surrounded on all sides by other people so as not to block their faces.
This should be instinctive as courteous behavior.
Obviously, Obama does not posses qualities of good behavior.

Badger40 on September 21, 2011 at 8:34 AM

Of course maybe he wasn’t waving. Maybe he was caught midpoint in a backhanded b!tch slap to that guy’s face.

Well, if this turns out not to be a hoax, and Getty doesn’t send out threatening letters coercing everyone on the internet to pull this image, I nominate a closeup cropped version to be the OotD icon photo on the HA home page from now on. This is a gaffe for the history books.

I was amused that people would think that a Getty photo was photoshopped by Getty or someone else an hour after it was taken.

Getty doesn’t have to photoshop to make the doofus look like a doofus.
Getty takes most of those angry Obama photos, the pouty photos. OK, an occassional halo photo slips in.

Increasingly, it’s become clear to me that the people who see Obama the most, the photags, don’t like him.

this photo HAS to be a fake. Top row our left, at least one person, is cut out, bottom row our right, another person is cut out. Plus Obama already stands out in a “funny” way like he was placed there. It would also not be a “natural” place to place a very tall person, he should be back at least one row.
