Video: A brief history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
posted at 10:05 am on September 20, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
This week, I’ll be attending the DurbanWatch conference staged by the Hudson Institute as a counter-conference to the UN’s Durban III conference on racism. The previous Durban conferences staged by the UN Human Rights Council inevitably turn into Israel-bashing festivals, blaming the Israelis for all of the ills of the world — while conveniently ignoring the real human-rights abuses of the UNHRC’s members, with such enlightened societies like Saudi Arabia, China, Cuba, and Bahrain sitting in judgment. DurbanWatch turns a critical eye on those states as well as the UN’s efforts to isolate Israel. At the same time, Mahmoud Abbas is trying to get the UN to bypass Israel altogether and declare a Palestinian state in territory disputed by Israel.
It’s timely, then, that Encounter Books has just released a new Broadside titled A Century of Palestinian Rejectionism and Jew Hatred by Sol Stern. The book reviews the long history of the disputed territory, from the Ottoman Empire to today. Bill Whittle of Declaration Entertainment produced a longish video to accompany the book’s release, using the whiteboard animation technique to walk through the various attempts to get the Palestinians to accept a partition and a sovereign state. It’s a must-watch primer on the various issues under debate this week, as well as an indictment of current American policy:
Be sure to keep an eye on Hot Air on Thursday as I report directly from the conference, and get some of the speakers on camera to talk about our policies in the Middle East.

See if you can get someone from the nebulous “international community” to whom we can give the credit to for deposing Moammar Khaddafi and capping him in the head…er wait. Scratch that, ask a few if they know how many more
daysweeksmonths that this Libya operation will take.tips.

The sad thing about this video is that it’s even needed. Political correctness has brought us through the looking glass and into a world where defending yourself is an act of oppression.

OT: Is there anyone from HA covering the “Wall Street Occupation” occurring in NYC?
The leftist sites I haunt are in high dudgeon about police brutality, illegal arrests, fascist state, etc. etc. going on there, and the accompanying vids are hilarious.
Would be nice to see some of that over here just for the comment gold from the funny people at HA.

They don’t deserve a state, much less U.S. Tax dollars. What kind of people remain “refugees” for over 60 years? All their problems are self inflicted and they still blame the Jews.
cartooner on September 20, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Ed, Mike Huckabee will be one of the speakers. I hope that you will get him on camera and post the video here.

Meh. I can make this boring history stuff instantly understandable.
Jews marry off most of their young males. Arabs, not so much.
And you know what they say.
Ed knows what I’m talking about.
Seth Halpern on September 20, 2011 at 10:33 AM
It was not by choice originally. The arab states kept them in camps.

That’s a great line up of speakers at the conference and a beer with Allahpundit. Have fun Mr. Morrissey. I love these threads but feel so out of my depth on foreign policy. My depth being kiddie pool levels.
Cindy Munford on September 20, 2011 at 10:37 AM
Clear, concise, right to the point: this video demonstrates that the Jooooooooooos are solely responsible for the repressed Palestinians.
/ clueless leftist rant

Great video!
bloghooligan on September 20, 2011 at 10:42 AM
No kidding. My only criticism is that it skips the 1967 war and doesn’t explain how Israel came to have jurisdiction over the disputed territories. But it is terrific on the early history.
ProfessorMiao on September 20, 2011 at 10:44 AM
When the Jews started moving to Israel in large numbers (1946) a building boom was the result.
Most of the so-called Palestinians were migrant construction workers.
Most modern Palestinians are the descendants of these migrant workers. Arafat was Egyptian.
The solution to the Palestinian problem is to simply repatriate these people with their ancestral homelands, like Egypt, Jordan, Syria, etc. The Palestinian’s tried this and their own countries rejected them.
The Arabs want this problem. They created it. They need victims to push their agenda.
The Rock on September 20, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Interesting. I saw a report a few years back that basically found that a large portion of the Palestinians are of Jewish decent–basically the remnants of the original Jewish population that converted to Islam.
Count to 10 on September 20, 2011 at 10:51 AM
I get that, but we’re talking >60 years here.
cartooner on September 20, 2011 at 10:52 AM
The problem is Islam. Period. No Islam, no problem. Catch me drift?
Akzed on September 20, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Good video, I think it is safe to say that I will never understand Muslims.
Cindy Munford on September 20, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Don’t most Arabs living in Israel thrive?
Cindy Munford on September 20, 2011 at 10:56 AM
If I may be so bold — the Jewish leadership are off their rocker if they want to split Jerusalem.
Jerusalem should wholly belong to Israel. And this has nothing to do with the “Palestinians” non-ability not to destroy Jewish artifacts.
I know it is easy to say from where I live, but I think in the long run, sharing Jerusalem that is, it will cause even more problems — so, IMHO it would be better to take care of business now and deal with it for once in for all.
Here is a real stirring video on about Israel, called I Am Israel.
Brass on September 20, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Better than non-royal Arabs elsewhere in the middle east, I would guess.
Count to 10 on September 20, 2011 at 10:58 AM
I don’t know which Palestinians are still referred to as “regugees”. Some of them certainly are not and most of the original camps are gone. I know that Jordan certainly denies “palestinians” citizenship as there are more “palestinians” than “Jordanians”. All the nationalities are artificial anyway.
gh on September 20, 2011 at 10:59 AM
The Jewish leadership should just declare that Gaza is Palestine and be done with it. The Arabs won’t negotiate.
gh on September 20, 2011 at 11:00 AM
I doubt it. It is more of a cultural thing at this point, that happens to be flavored with religion. They could all give up Islam today and they would probably still be trying to invade Israel and kill the People living there.

Fabulous video.
nukemhill on September 20, 2011 at 11:04 AM
SSShhhh!
BobMbx on September 20, 2011 at 11:26 AM
Absolutely. Arabs living in Israel are more free and privileged than in any arab country.
slickwillie2001 on September 20, 2011 at 11:45 AM
It is worth the entire 11 minutes and 37 seconds just to hear the narrator say “Mr. Obama’s position remains more mysterious”. I’m sure it’s not a mystery to Rashid Khalidi.
motionview on September 20, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Well, friend, you know it’s a bit more than that. The problem with Islam is the heart of man. Remove that problem and we won’t have religions or idealogies like Islam appearing.
But I’m a cynic when it comes to the man being able to do anything with his own heart. Fortunately, man has an intercessor.

Here is The History of the ME in a couple of minutes, a’la Glenn Beck.
hoosiermama on September 20, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Arabs always whine about the Crusades. Another of their selective recalls, as the Crusades were kicked off by the Arabs invading the Holy Land in the first place – you know – the SAME place they now call “Palestine.”
PJ Emeritus on September 20, 2011 at 3:28 PM
Granted, awful men will always find a reason to be awful, but the search for that reason is made much easier if you adhere to a religion that promotes violence on so-called “infidels.” So, I must also concur that the Islamic religion itself is partly, if not mostly, to blame for the clusterf*** that the ME has turned into.
R. Waher on September 20, 2011 at 6:54 PM
This history is flawed because it perpetuates the idea that Israeli history started in the 20th century with the Balfour Declaration. israel has been the Jewish homeland for 3000 years, populated by Jews, and rarely completely devoid of Jews, for much of that time. All the BD did was try to give israel back to the Jews from the various nebulous entities which had ruled it since the Romans.
Sorry, Bill Whittle. I love you but this is very inadequate.
YehuditTX on September 20, 2011 at 9:39 PM
Nice quick overview. It does ignore the war against the Jews in Arab lands in ancient Jewish communities that were over a thousand years older than Islam itself.
700,000 Arab Jews fled their ancestral homes and fled to Israel.
Let the Palestinians live in those deserted ancient Jewish commnities while the descendents of these impoverished and persecuted Arab Jews thrive in Israel.
Eye for an eye, indeed.
