Poll: What was the Obamateurism of the Week?
posted at 9:00 am on September 18, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
It’s time once again to show your love for Obama — or at least the biggest Obamateurism this week! We’ll only get one leader, which means we’ll have four trailers, but at least it beats gutters. In the end, we’ll just export the losers and let the winner take a bow in the finals, so if you love an OOTD, be sure to vote for it!
Previous 2011 “winners”:
- Demands joint session to compete with GOP debate, forced to back down
- President & First Lady take separate jets to Martha’s Vineyard 4 hours apart
- Says “I want to sell goods all over the world that are stamped with three words: ‘Made in America’” … from Canadian bus
- Rails against “big money flooding the airwaves” in politics … at a $35,800 per person fundraiser
- When I said, “change we can believe in,” I didn’t say “change we can believe in tomorrow.”
- “I’d rather be talking about stuff that everybody welcomes — like new programs.”
- “Job-killing tax cuts.”
- “Eric, don’t call my bluff. I’m going to the American people with this.”
- “And certainly at the federal level where I do have influence, I can make sure that we make these adjustments without affecting people’s collective bargaining rights.”
- Six references to tax breaks for “corporate jet owners” as reason budget isn’t balanced
- Identifies wrong soldier as non-posthumous MoH recipient
- “You see it when you go to a bank and you use an ATM; you don’t go to a bank teller.”
- Uses restaurant as example of success of auto bailouts, closes two weeks later
- Goes for 70th round of golf on Memorial Day
- Obama botches toast to Queen Elizabeth
- “Israel must be able to defend itself – by itself – against any threat“
- WH gripes that immigration debate too often uses caricatures after Obama says, “Maybe they’ll need a moat.”
- White House issues Earth Day proclamation, skips Easter
- Can’t name a mistake at townhall in which he made three in one sentence
- Accuses GOP of trying to hurt seniors after lecturing them not to demagogue on entitlement reform
- “If you’re complaining about the price of gas and you’re only getting 8 miles a gallon, you know, you might want to think about a trade-in.”
- Obama accepts his transparency award in secret, no-press meeting
- “War” first changed to “kinetic military action,” then “time-limited, scope-limited military action”
- Obama telling people it would be easier to be President of China because “No one is scrutinizing Hu Jintao’s words in Tahrir Square.”
- Obama tells group that there is a “subterranean” racially-based agenda in opposition to his presidency
- Ferry for Americans in Libya comes three days late — and with a bill for passengers
- WH says Obama not addressing Libya because of “scheduling issue“
- After saying he hadn’t followed the Wisconsin issue, says Walker’s plan “seems like more of an assault on unions.”
- Businesses have “obligation” to create jobs and “pay decent wages”
- After losing verdict on first ever federal mandate to purchase private-sector product, accuses judge of “overreach”
- Obama bogarts Newt Gingrich’s book title for his “Winning the Future” SOTU speech
- 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner holds state dinner for man who has 2010 winner under house arrest
- After telling Boehner and McConnell that “there will be plenty of time to campaign for 2012 in 2012,”announces March start to re-election bid
- “I really want to figure out a way where I can spend more time outside of Washington listening and learning and engaging the American people.”
Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me atobamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Bad things always start with ” if you love me ….”

I went with Costa Rica because so far it seems most of his green jobs have been created in other countries.
tim c on September 18, 2011 at 9:06 AM
This is one of the hardest choices ever! I could easily picked any of them, as they were equally amateurish. You would think that an Ivy League educated person would learn by now. Ultimately I went with giving a jobs speech at a company creating jobs in Costa Rica. Doesn’t his staff do any checking of these things, or do they have investments with these firms, or are the owners of these firms donors? All of the above?
armygirl on September 18, 2011 at 9:08 AM
I had not heard about the “bow” comment. Wow, this guy must give no thought to what he is reading. He needs to start reading his speeches ahead of time, even though that is probably really, really, hard.

The only “Obamateurism” I care about comes from Congress. Not having begun impeachment proceedings yet on President Historic First©, the SCoaMF, is an Obamateurism of epic (and possible fatal) proportions.

Costa Rica jobs…the worst staff ever preparing schedules/speeches for the worst president ever.

Is it just me, or is choosing between the various options every week getting more and more impossible as Obama’s presidency progresses? I honestly have no idea how we’ll be able to narrow this down to just one Obamateurism of the Year. Solving Fermat’s last theorem was less challenging than this will be.

Obama sucking up to Costa Rica makes perfect sense to me. After his term as President is over. He’s going to need and non-extraditable country to live in for the rest of his life.
Tommy_G on September 18, 2011 at 9:22 AM
Heh, his speech are easier to deliver than they are to listen to… especially after the same ole cliches, platitudes and straw men have been recycled for over two years.

I voted for the Jimmy Hoffa one because that shows that Obama is not only a hypocrite but a guy who doesn’t have the balls to say anything negative about a union leader.
SoulGlo on September 18, 2011 at 9:26 AM
Another tough choice. All of the above still isn’t an option, soooo I went with the Hoffa gutter politics. Thy name is hypocrite.

I wouldn’t disagree with the selection of any of them. Since I went to school in “portables” as far back as the 1950s, and since my spouse and I each spent a good portion of our careers teaching in them, I voted for his “trailer” comment.
Those “trailers,” portables, or modular classroom were generally a sign of economic boom times, of people moving into new neighborhoods so quickly that the school ran out of space. We don’t have that “problem” now.
Instead, we have a president who takes up a young English teacher’s rather ignorant complaint. She provides another example of (probably) a union member who should be grateful to have a job but instead takes her moment with the president to whine about her “intolerable” working conditions. Portables, by the way, are generally fine teaching and learning environments. The teacher controls the lighting, heating and cooling, and generally doesn’t have to worry about noise from the hallway or the classroom next door.
Obama’s out-of-touchness with the rest of us, orderin’ burgers, and knockin’ back brewski’s and,oh yeah, droppin’ his Gs, was made obvious once again by his stupid comment about trailers. That’s Obamateuristic.

50sGuy on September 18, 2011 at 9:40 AM
Hey, lots of kids not only go to school in trailers, they live in trailers. Maybe the government could do something about making home ownership easier for people who want to live in a real house.
Wait, what?

Just had to go with a love that is very tainted !
Sandybourne on September 18, 2011 at 9:44 AM
Further to my comment that Obama was eager to take up that young English teacher’s complaint about having to teach in a trailer, I noticed that Michael Barone is writing about the Shop Steward in Chief.

What often comes after “If you love me…” has much in common with what he’s doing to the American people, only the way he does it isn’t nearly as much fun.
backwoods conservative on September 18, 2011 at 9:52 AM
If you sit and stare at all of the choices for a few minutes it all comes into focus and the right one comes to you, then you vote. It works about 90% of the time.
This method is to be used when “all of the above” are excellent choices……….

IT has to be the if you love me bit. It is such a desperate, self-obsessed, plaintive cry. Entirely unbecoming to the office. And that’s without even discussing the complete cluelessness and lack of merit of the bill itself!

I can’t choose from among these two:
We shouldn’t have people teaching in trailers. We shouldn’t have kids learning in trailers.”
I’d LOVE for children to learn in trailers.
“But if you love me, you’ve got to help me pass this bill!”
Well … I don’t want to help him pass this bill, so I guess I don’t love him! Love is all about quid pro quo, anyway, I mean, if you’re a prostitute, or patronize prostitutes. That’s not really love, though, is it …

This week is difficult. I am going to have to think about these for awhile.
I mean after his urgent plea to pass the bill….. Is it, if you love me or is it – Gives jobs-plan speech at business creating jobs … in Costa Rica.
Obama’s the one who made his jobs plan/bill, the issue front and center. He should be able to stay on message, and control the optics.
I guess I will go with Give’s job speech at business creating jobs in Costa Rica. After all he’s basically let every third world country pick our bones clean. The Obama DOJ raided Gibson Guitars….because the Indians want them to manufacture Gibson Guitars in India “Jobs” that means shutting down manufacturing of Gibson Guitars in the U.S. = we lose jobs.
It seems like the Obama administration is helping other 3rd world countries destroy our employment base…..

Another week where any one of these would have sunk a R president to single digit approval levels and fired off a 24/7 repetition of the gaffes by the LSM, but this week, there is a clear winner. Most of us are old enough to have been in a relationship where one side says “If you love me you’ll do X” and we are mature enough to know that means something is bad wrong. Not this narcissist.
Mini-14 on September 18, 2011 at 10:56 AM
I just had to go with “bow”. A real Christian (and a Jew) would know how to pronounce “bow” (which goes along with “arrow”) —- a regular parishioner in Rev. Wright’s church, not so much.

I went with Costa Rica … his advance staff must be morons (or lazy), thus he’s an amateur for trusting them. The “if you love me” one is hilarious, but in sad way — it reeks of Obummer’s utter desparation.

I had to vote for Costa Rica. Too perfect, too quintessentially Obama, just like appointing Immelt as Jobs Czar just as GE announces plans to move large portions of their operations – and the jobs that go with them – to China.
Not only does he brag about the company in this case, he actually chooses it as the scene of a “jobs speech” he thinks is important to his reelection.
Oh well, I guess it beat one of the “green jobs” companies that took millions in taxpayer funding and then folded, eh?

ROFL!!! Ten Hail Marys, and ten Our Fathers for you! LOL
I went with the minority. To me, that was the only genuine screw up. The others, he just either does overtly, or he does without regard. The psalm for example. A few quick read throughs, would have helped, but he just got up and read it, and had no clue what he was reading, and probably didn’t care.
The others, just seemed to obvious.
But living in his ivory tower, and his kids probably being brought up that way, to be so devoid of reality that you didn’t know trailers were used at schools? Good God, talk about out of touch!!! This man has no business running a country full of people. He doesn’t care enough to know that crap, what makes anyone think he cares about the other stuff? All he cares about is Obama.
