Ridiculous NY-09 spin: “It’s a very difficult district for Democrats”
posted at 8:45 am on September 14, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Republicans won two House seats in a special election last night. One, in Nevada, had been a relatively safe district, and Republican Mark Amodei cruised to victory over Democrat Kate Marshall as expected. Also as predicted, Republican Bob Turner won a six-point victory over Democrat David Weprin in NY-09, a Congressional district in the heart of Democratic stronghold New York City. The margin of victory exactly matched polling leads for Turner from both Siena and Democratic pollster PPP in the final days before the vote.
That doesn’t mean it wasn’t a surprise. The NY-09 seat has been in Democratic hands since, well, Warren Harding was President. So what did the leader of the Democratic Party have to say about the loss?
Democratic party leaders insisted the loss wasn’t a harbinger of things to come. “It’s a very difficult district for Democrats,” said Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, noting its Democratic margins there tend to be the second lowest of all the districts in New York City.
Well, in her defense, she still hasn’t gotten past that tough loss when Andrew Peterson edged David O’Connell for the seat … in 1922. The same seat was held by Geraldine Ferraro, Chuck Schumer, and Anthony Weiner … when he had his pants on. Going back to 1996, the lowest percentage a Democrat got in a general election in this seat was 60.8%, which was in 2010 while the Tea Party took 63 seats from Democrats that ended up being a lot more “difficult” than this one. It was such a difficult district that Weiner ran unopposed in 2006 and virtually unopposed in 2008.
Getting past the absurd spin, does this win mean as much as Republicans would argue? Michael Bloomberg hopes not:
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg dismissed the suggestion the outcome has national implications.
“It’s not the end of the Obama administration and the Republican resurgence,” the mayor said. “These tend to be local races.”
But this tends to argue otherwise:
Another Jewish Democrat, Richard Krisberg, said he voted for the Republican.
“Weprin supports President Obama and his policies, and that’s why I voted against him,” Mr. Krisberg said.
Neither does this from the New York Times:
The Turner campaign had eagerly courted disenchanted Democrats, and outside polling places around the district on Tuesday, multiple longtime Democrats confessed that despite concern about Mr. Turner’s eagerness to slash federal spending, they chose him hoping that his election would get lawmakers’ attention.
“I am a registered Democrat, I have always been a registered Democrat, I come from a family of Democrats — and I hate to say this, I voted Republican,” said Linda Goldberg, 61, after casting her ballot in Queens. “I need to send a message to the president that he’s not doing a very good job. Our economy is horrible. People are scared.”
I think it’s safe to say that even Democrats aren’t buying the President’s new rehashed jobs proposals as the key to economic recovery. They want a big change in direction, and they are most definitely not seeing it from Obama. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz may still be correct — but if NY-09 has turned into a “very difficult district” for Democrats, there are going to be an avalanche of “difficult districts” in 2012. This next election might make 2010 look like a breezy summer day for Democrats unless Obama can figure out how to stop his slide.

Are you seriously whining? That demographic owns the party. They control everything.
Nothing is wrong, but that is all we run, that is all some will accept. Some bend over backwards for people they identify with culturally, but that’s not principle.
We had Bush for eight years. Fred gets an undeserved free pass, when Romney was a much better candidate. Palin and Rush talks about “country class” and “real America”, and many openly talk about “true biblical Christianity”, while they mock Mormons and unwittingly mock Catholics and Jews in the process. Huckabee is a liberal, but is forgiven because he is a good christian and southerner. People rush to Perry without knowing anything about him. Romney has a few liberal positions, and is raked over the coals for five years because he is perceived as “an outsider”, even though he is American as apple pie.
I know these people. They are conservative, but dont feel like the GOP respects them, or represents them.
With Perry on the top of the ticket NY09 goes back to Dems in 2012, guaranteed.

I heard the ads on TV And radio (metro NYC area) and the Dems fought hard.
The turning point in the election was when Mayor Koch (God bless him) and Dov Hikind endorsed the Republican to send a message to Obama who had disrespected Israel so many times.
Of all the disrespect Obama has shown, to me the most insulting and outrageous was when he left Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli aid alone in the White House at dinner time to “go eat dinner with his family.”
I never heard of such an insult to any state leader.

Maybe, but maybe not. It depends on how Obama acts. And not just giving them a song and dance. They know who their friends are. And anyone may be preferable to them than Obama.
Besides, the Dems are looking to redistrict that district out of existence anyway. So the point may be moot.
Elisa on September 14, 2011 at 10:00 AM
I think that’s RINO wishful thinking on your part.
Newsflash dude – this district doesn’t flip Republican unless there is a grave circumstance.
Now – I know that you are a liberal – and like big government – so you’re prolly a bit scared that Obama’s economic management might get good enough to improve the economy.
Let me put those fears to rest – because I’m actually a true-believing Conservative … the Obama economy will only get worse because he only employs Socialistic economic measures. Socialism FAILS – and FAILS HARD. Ask Mitt Romney about that … oh wait – no, he still thinks that Socialist RomneyCare was a great idea even though the Mass economy is shot.
We can RUN ANYONE we wish – and they can beat Obama.

Romney’s faith is a convenient excuse. His ever-changing political ideology, along with a very apparent Beltway Insider Elitism, is what has built a chasm between him and voters in the heartland.

Whining? How very stereotypical of you. If “That demographic owns the party. They control everything.” who is this GOP that doesn’t respect them? While you are correct that the majority of the base doesn’t want to be lead by folks in D.C. and New York, neither free pass Fred nor liberal Huckabee won the nomination. Gov. Perry may have been welcomed with open arms, I don’t think he is getting the kid glove treatment. As for Gov. Romney, while there are certainly some who will be turned away by his religion, I think his bigger problems are his reluctance to engage and promote and his habit of campaigning by tactics instead of platform. It’s hard to get excited about a man who plans to sit back and watch and hope that others shoot themselves in the foot. He also has a reputation of dirty tricks by proxy. His “flip flops” don’t bother me, most people change their positions on things as they get older and more informed. Gov. Romney better start acting like he wants the position rather than it is due him.

His main problem is an intese Conservative Inferiority Complex. He has so little faith in Conservatism he’s willing to water it down with Socialism, which he deep down thinks is necessary for success.
It’s not of course.
HondaV65 on September 14, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Outside of the Romney attacks are an attack on Mormonism stuff in this thread (which for a change I’ll stay out of ) I think people are missing the big picture just a bit.
Historically, there’s been two ethnic groups that go liberal–guaranteed. The JOOOOOOOS and blacks, of course. Carter, Mondale, etc all got those groups.
If the DNC is throwing Jews under the bus, well…. that can’t be good for them. Who’s left to vote for them? Independants and Republicans won’t. If Jews are now “the enemy”, then all that will be left of the Democrats in 2012 are the CBC and possibly the gay lobby.
I’ll take that result. If that is what the Democratic party is reduced to, then there’s no way they’ll ever come back. Without some major housecleaning at the CBC.

Cindy Munford on September 14, 2011 at 10:14 AM
Hmm, Debbie, you come from a district that is heavily populated with Jewish voters and you have run unopposed as well as won with a good margin in previous elections. Maybe she is trying to convince herself it was a fluke in NY and that it couldn’t affect her in SoFla that her district will stay Dem.
Also, she probably though Allen West, whose district is the one next to hers, was a fluke the first time he ran for the seat. Guess it wasn’t a fluke the second time around.
Time to shake in your heels, hopefully a conservative candidate will step up in her district.

Nice piece, and a great movie. I’ve been hoping for an “open mike” moment from either Barack or Michelle that exposes what lies beneath the facade. Almost had one from Michelle yesterday, when a video appears to show her saying, “All that for a flag?” to BO during the 9-11 ceremonies. But you can’t really hear what she is saying.
We may yet get one. Unless Gunwalker breaks wide open and forces BO out quicker than you can say “Dick Nixon” ( and it very well might), BO and the wifey have some time left to screw up.

No, I’m suggesting that running another black senator from Illinois in 2016 after Obama loses in 2012 would be a stupid thing for the Democratic party to do. It would be more dumb if the base also pushed Deval Patrick.
It is my hope and dream that the Dems run nothing but liberals from MA, NY and IL. Just run clones of Obama and Deval for five straight election cycles and watch Democrats down south, the southwest, the midwest, the mountain west start asking, “does this party really respect me? really want me? Are my blood, sweat, and money going to support a cause or a clique”?
Balancing tickets has been part of our political history since the beginning. Ground Zero in the Tea Party battle is Wisconsin. A full 1/6 of the House seats gained in 2012 came from NY and PA. Complete takeovers occurred in NH. ME. and MI.
There are conservative factions and conservative instincts in people all over this country. Go sit in an Irish Pub in Far Rockaway Queens, you’ll be surprised how conservative it is. You’ll also be surprised how loyal to the Democratic Party they are because they cant identify with the GOP.
They think the GOP is hostile to people like them, and many on site prove them right over and over and over again.
swamp_yankee on September 14, 2011 at 10:19 AM
I think trying to tag Mrs. Obama with that is a losing proposition. That’s the kind of thing that can come back and bite you in the butt. Although I will admit that the two of them could work on the public demeanor a bit, they always look annoyed when they are amongst the great unwashed.

But if you were to suggest that these people that they keep voting for are the ones promoting the things they dislike, Katy bar the door. It took Monica Lewenski’s dress to get my aunt to vote Republican for the first time. A very stupid reason but I’ll take the vote all the same.

For Barry to ‘stop his slide’ would require that he repudiate everything he’s been taught all his life. Ain’t gonna happen, when the only “truth” is “Socialist truth”. He’s a One-Trick pony with no other options open.
Bet the honcho’s at the DNC are mulling over a primary right now. Not because they see Barry as another Carter, but rather to “give people a choice”…..and save the party’s ass in Washington.
Exit question: Is this the same party that came to power in 2008, claiming they’d have unfettered rule for the next 40-50 years?

Come on people! Seriously, let’s cut old DWS a little slack. Imagine getting a call from Obummer saying he wants you to be his chief apologist. I mean it is the President – your President – after all who needs your help for the next 2 years. You gotta say “Yes” – right? Do you then want to shoot yourself every morning when you wake up instead of facing another day of spinning for President 0?
You have to hand it to DWS’s research staff to find the “lowest margin of win” crumb for her to tout. There’s some inspired spinning going on right there! LOL! The sad thing is that the MSM WILL include that phrase verbatim in all their reports on this evening’s news reports.

You know whose district is starting to feel a lot like NY-9, with a good amount of snowbirds and by being reliably democratic?
I can’t wait for her concession speech…
It’s a very difficult district seat for Democrats like me.

Swamp
That is exactly Ernesto’s old MO. He was conservative, he has lots of con friends and family. He is just concerned about the gop not appealing to indies. Just come out of the closet dudr. It’s ok.

Little Debbie is so effing preposterous, I can’t even make a rational comment. My stomach is turning.

Bingo. Forcing them to pour 500K into a district they’ve held for nearly a century is going to make next year awfully expensive. No wonder the POTUS wants that “jobs” bill passed. /

When asked how many years the district had been in Democrat hands, Ms. Wasserman-Schultz fitfully tromped her hoof 93 times.

Come out of the closet as what? A guy who joined his local town Republican committee when he was 21, created his own PAC a few years later, and has been working in the trenches all around New England for 20 years, as an election lawyer, field manager, and volunteer. Okay.
Now you come out of the closet as someone who doesnt have a clue about what it takes to win election in any place that isnt already deep red Stay in your echo chamber, and stay naive.

Well the candidate always did have to do more than get on the ballot to win. I mean they always had to make at least a couple of speeches.
