Obama’s new Snitch Central: AttackWatch

posted at 10:05 am on September 14, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

In 2009, the White House launched an effort to get people to snitch on those who expressed opposition to President Obama through a new official e-mail, flag@whitehouse.gov, and a web page on the official White House site.  It didn’t quite last a fortnight, thanks to an outcry of anger over the idea that a President would be so petty and so paranoid as to need an official informant bureau in the White House.  They dropped this about the same time that Obama finally dropped his war on Fox News, having lost on all fronts to control opinion.

Did they learn a lesson?  Apparently not, or at least they learned the wrong lesson.  The “flag” program is back, but this time it’s being run out of the Obama re-election campaign:

This is, at least, not nearly as offensive as running a Snitch Central out of the White House.  It’s just as silly, though, and every bit as petty.  The categories for passing along an “attack” include significant events like a TV interview or broadcast ad, but also include such trivial categories as “forwarded e-mail” and “rumor.”  Presumably, the campaign would then debunk the “rumor,” which would then give it a lot more attention and oxygen than it otherwise might receive.  In fact, it’s not inconceivable that people who really wanted to spread “rumors” would do so by reporting them through AttackWatch and waiting for the campaign to publicize rumors through their response.

This President and his team still haven’t learned the problems that come with punching below one’s weight.  Besides, their big problems don’t come from rumors; they come from the record of abject failure that Barack Obama carries into this campaign.  They’d do better to spend the money to hire better economists to consult the President than the coterie of academics that keep pushing the same Obamanomics that have flopped for the better part of three years.  In the meantime, this serves as a good reminder as to just how thin-skinned and paranoid this President has been.

Update: Why wait to be reported?  Send your picture to Bill Whittle and he’ll create your entry in the Gallery of Unrepentant Enemies of Dear Leader’s Glorious Worker’s Paradise.

Besides, their big problems don’t come from rumors; they come from the record of abject failure that Barack Obama carries into this campaign.

Hmmm, correction: it might just be that in there minds, the abject failure comes from the Obama team’s not taking down their enemies.

The collection idea is not harmess poor taste, but a good old fashiond enemies list. The Soviets perfected this crap. It provided plenty of inexpensive salt imported from Siberia with cheap involuntary labor.

My tweets: “Wasn’t Flag@whitehouse.gov an epic #Fail 1st time around too? I guess spiffy new name will make everything just fine!” and “I’m a browncoat, not a brownshirt!”

I suspect the latter will go over the head of pretty much anyone manning the attackwatch site. I certainly can’t imagine the SCoaMC

I also factchecked one idiot who was complaining (seriously) about Republican lies because obama never said he wanted energy prices to skyrocket. He didn’t even have the cojones to reply calling me names.

Call, email, tweet, fax, visit, Facebook, send a carrier pigeon to” Republicans in Congress, telling them to pass his plan right away, Obama has said with an impassioned plea. The president has spread his rallying cry on Twitter and Facebook, even launching a website designed to help supporters contact their representatives

Sources on Capitol Hill tell ABC News congressional switchboards and email servers have not been inundated by any notable increases in traffic, certainly nothing close to what was encountered after Obama delivered similar pleas for action during the contentious debt-ceiling debate and health care-reform battle.

There has been “no big uptick related to the president this time,” one House Democratic aide said. “We’re definitely hearing from constituents worried about jobs etc., but that was true before the speech, too.”

“I don’t think we’ve had any sort of influx in correspondence,” a House Republican staffer said. “That said, if we see any carrier pigeons flapping around, we will be sure to let you know.”

Teh-heh

Attack Watch, on the other hand, used the shorter — and somewhat scaremongering — tagline, “Get the Truth. Fight the Smears.”

It’s safe to say that in its 24 hours of existence, Attack Watch has already backfired in drumming up support for Obama 2012. This tweet summed it up: “Wow, not only are Obama & Co. incredibly thin-skinned, they’re paranoid.”

On Twitter, where the Web site has an account to help Obama supporters submit evidence of “attacks” on the president using the hashtag #attackwatch, nearly every tweet about the site has ridiculed it.

“There’s a new Twitter account making President Obama look like a creepy, authoritarian nutjob,” an Arizonan tweeted. “In less than 24 hours, Attack Watch has become the biggest campaign joke in modern history,” a contributor to conservative blog The Right Sphere wrote.

Fight the Smears looked and felt far less scary, quoting Obama at the top of its page in a classic hope-change statement: “What you won’t hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge, and patriotism as a bludgeon — that sees our opponents not as competitors to challenge but enemies to demonize.”

Raleigh, North Carolina (CNN) – President Barack Obama took the push for his $447 billion jobs plan to the politically pivotal state of North Carolina Wednesday, telling an enthusiastic college crowd that it’s time to “finally get Washington to act.”

“If you’re in favor of America’s job creators, this is your bill,” Obama told an audience in a campaign-style setting at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. “The time for hand-wringing is over. … We’ve got to pass this bill right away.”
