Obama’s new Snitch Central: AttackWatch

posted at 10:05 am on September 14, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

In 2009, the White House launched an effort to get people to snitch on those who expressed opposition to President Obama through a new official e-mail, flag@whitehouse.gov, and a web page on the official White House site.  It didn’t quite last a fortnight, thanks to an outcry of anger over the idea that a President would be so petty and so paranoid as to need an official informant bureau in the White House.  They dropped this about the same time that Obama finally dropped his war on Fox News, having lost on all fronts to control opinion.

Did they learn a lesson?  Apparently not, or at least they learned the wrong lesson.  The “flag” program is back, but this time it’s being run out of the Obama re-election campaign:

This is, at least, not nearly as offensive as running a Snitch Central out of the White House.  It’s just as silly, though, and every bit as petty.  The categories for passing along an “attack” include significant events like a TV interview or broadcast ad, but also include such trivial categories as “forwarded e-mail” and “rumor.”  Presumably, the campaign would then debunk the “rumor,” which would then give it a lot more attention and oxygen than it otherwise might receive.  In fact, it’s not inconceivable that people who really wanted to spread “rumors” would do so by reporting them through AttackWatch and waiting for the campaign to publicize rumors through their response.

This President and his team still haven’t learned the problems that come with punching below one’s weight.  Besides, their big problems don’t come from rumors; they come from the record of abject failure that Barack Obama carries into this campaign.  They’d do better to spend the money to hire better economists to consult the President than the coterie of academics that keep pushing the same Obamanomics that have flopped for the better part of three years.  In the meantime, this serves as a good reminder as to just how thin-skinned and paranoid this President has been.

Update: Why wait to be reported?  Send your picture to Bill Whittle and he’ll create your entry in the Gallery of Unrepentant Enemies of Dear Leader’s Glorious Worker’s Paradise.

This could have seemed like a good idea only to a young, uneducated twit. There is probably no one at the White House to tell such people why they should not have launched this.

You people would be surprised where this stuff ends up. Or maybe you wouldn’t…

Spam the site.

Information overload.

Perhaps we can use this to our advantage. I’d like to finally see some college transcripts!

Ummm, there seems to be a problem over at Twitter when attempting to access #attackwatch. This is the message I got:

Hey, White House!

This Gym does Pros and they are near DC. It is black owned and most of us are minority. Like 95%

How can we talk you into coming by to explain why you spent 2 years on health care while we have 50% teen unemployment?

Snarky white guy will be kept quiet despite numerous ideas like six patents in progress.

$50,000 donation? Double that?

IlikedAUH2O on September 14, 2011 at 5:21 PM

I reported a rumor saying that both Obama and Holder knew about Operation Fast and Furious and for them to release the documents to clear up the issue.

heh.

It appears Twitter is unable to cope with all the reports of attacks on the president.

Know It All on September 14, 2011 at 5:23 PM

I don’t understand these comments.

The President needs to get the truth out there and overcome those evil, lying Tea Party scum that are out wreck this country.

Why just today I heard people spreading the evil rumor that our beloved leader was trying to organizer an internet based informant network to hunt down those who opposed his vision and discredit them.

If we didn’t have AttackWatch, were would we make sure these scum were dealt by our fellow travelers, the Longshoremen?

Nazis!

I was going to snitch but I didn’t want them to get my email account. They are going to have to work for it like everyone else

We need cyber snitch cafes.

In these cafes, you would get a computer, a mail account from the snitch service, a face, simulated fingerprints, and a fake matricula card, which will probably also get you a discount in tuition.

We need this to open up snitching to the little people.

The goon who dreamed up this site was probably intending to stuff the ballot box with outrages they could feed to the MSM. When a snake chases its tail, it ends up biting itself

The Nazi Ministry of Information had score of workers dedicated to locating enemies of the State, manually. The Dem site is probably already coding filters to sort the wheat from the chaff. They have a lot of search engine talent on their side. A good nazi retains the minutae for future reference

Update, Wednesday, 5:11 p.m.

Obama 2012’s press office just returned an earlier request for comment. According to deputy press secretary Katie Hogan, 100,000 people signed up for the site in the first 24 hours.

“This site is a tool providing our supporters with the facts they need to fight back against lies and distortions about the President’s record,” Hogan said.

Hogan was last seen scraping unicorn poo off her shoes in the hallway.

Oh, oh. Just checked the twitter page and the admins have purged everything except their own propaganda. Guess they didn’t find the insta-snitch flood of messages to be helpful. They actually think they are providing a public service! OMG!

Which is so not Twitter…

The laughingstock this has become is only matched by the fact they attempted to use their “super neet/keen social media” cred through Twitter – and are limiting the benefits and process of Twitter.

I give the stooges credit – they are trying hard to quell the storm – though I think their being out Twitted 657,000:1

True enough, but they just don’t fit the bill…

Based on stories from my old man, the typical GESTAPO agent looked the part: long leather trench coat, fitted dark suit, matching tie, Fedora hat and an air of ‘sharp-eyed, icy professionalism’ (he made a point of saying that they were nobody to mess with…).

This new crop of ‘wanna-bees’? I would imagine this crowd…a loose-fitted hemp/cotton-blend button-less jacket, an Abercromby & Finch ‘Cold River’ T-shirt, Dockers Kakhi’s (slim-fit, of course), an Armani Silk scarf, and for the finishing touch, Rockport deck shoes (or ‘earth-friendly’ Berkenstocks) all wrapped up in warm ‘earth-tones’ (or pastels).

Fear them…? Not so much.

Now the IRS agent with spare time on his hands…that’s another matter.

That being said, learn the joys of TrashMail and have at it.

I just reported Bert to AttackWatch.

Surely he’s going to attack again.

In other news…there was a grave disturbance near the wall of the Kremlin, as the ground shook. Those nearby believe that J.V. Stalin rolled over in his grave unable to come to grips that Obama had copied him exactly, but used Hitlers color scheme. Not unlike LBJ, Stalin hated to come in second on the internet report your neighbor concept.

My small contribution (in text since I can’t post the jpg)

I was called a “dick” on Facebook because I didn’t vote for Obama last time, and I don’t plan to next year.

For some reason it errored out when I didn’t PAY THEM!!

Few Things Considered on September 14, 2011 at 11:46 PM

I was going to report the rumour which I keep hearing that the President is a Muslim. I don’t believe such a thing myself, but still, I keep hearing this rumour. Even in Canada, where I live.

Anyway, they won’t let me even go to the sign up page with a Postal Code, so I used my Florida zip code, and then got to the page where I could donate to the fight against these attacks. Certain that they wouldn’t accept a Canadian-addressed credit card, I stopped there. If someone donates, does one get the opportunity to report an attack? Or is this just another fundraising scam?

Sign up with a bogus email and when it gets to the fundraising page, click the banner at the top of the page to go back to the main page, and then report on the left. There is no email confirmation required, so any thing in the X@Y.com format will work.

Just reported a democrat paper for publishing the poverty report.
Clearly blaming the president, but no report on how many jobs have been saved. How one-sided and partisan can you get?
