No way Obama’s jobs bill will pass the Senate, say — Democrats?

posted at 12:05 pm on September 14, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Okay, someone had better ‘fess up.  Democrats lost a House seat in New York City, Barack Obama dropped below majority job approval in California, and now Senate Democrats are attacking Obama’s proposal to raise taxes to pay for Porkulus II: Economic Boogaloo.  Did we flip over to the Terran Empire last night?  And why do I have a goatee?

As he demands Congress quickly approve his ambitious proposal aimed at reviving the sagging economy, many Democrats on Capitol Hill appear far from sold that the president has the right antidote to spur major job growth and turn around their party’s political fortunes.

“Terrible,” Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) told POLITICO when asked about the president’s ideas for how to pay for the $450 billion price tag. “We shouldn’t increase taxes on ordinary income. … There are other ways to get there.”

“That offset is not going to fly, and he should know that,” said Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu from the energy-producing Louisiana, referring to Obama’s elimination of oil and gas subsidies. “Maybe it’s just for his election, which I hope isn’t the case.”

“I think the best jobs bill that can be passed is a comprehensive long-term deficit-reduction plan,” said Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), discussing proposals to slash the debt by $4 trillion by overhauling entitlement programs and raising revenue through tax reforms. “That’s better than everything else the president is talking about — combined.”

And those are just the moderates in the party. Some liberals also have concerns.

The concern that liberals have is mainly about extending the temporary payroll-tax cut, and they have a point.  That reduces the amount of revenue flowing into an already-teetering Social Security system in an effort to make up the difference by fueling economic growth.  Unfortunately, that didn’t actually work, because the tax relief was temporary and too small to boot.  Extending the cut may sound good to workers and to Republicans who like tax cuts in principle, but it’s the same kind of short-term gimmickry that has characterized Obamanomics all along. And it makes Social Security that much more difficult to fix in any reform effort, too.

It’s also interesting to note that both Webb and Landrieu aren’t facing voters next year.  Webb’s seat is up but Webb won’t be defending it; Landrieu won her last election in 2008 and won’t have to defend the seat until 2014.  Carper comes from as safe a state for a Democrat as can be found, so while he has to campaign for re-election in 2012, he’s not going to be terribly concerned about his chances in deep-blue Delaware — unless the 2012 election turns into such a bloodbath that no Democrat is safe.

And if these relatively safe Democrats are bailing on the jobs bill, or at least its pay-fors, then what can we expect from endangered Democrats like Ben Nelson (NE), Claire McCaskill (MO), Bill Nelson (FL), or even Bob Casey (PA), whose state went all Republican in 2010?  Obama wants to paint House Republicans as obstructionists so that he can make the do-nothing Congress argument in 2012, but that strategy will fail spectacularly if his own party refuses to consider the bill in the Senate.  If that happens, the only Barack Obama serving a second term in office will have a goatee.

Update: I put Ben Nelson in twice.  Initially when I wrote this, I almost put Bill Nelson in twice.

So… serious question:

Is there a point at which Barack Obama pulls a Lyndon Johnson and says he won’t run for his party’s nomination?

Hillary will not eagerly run into a burning building. The dem strategists will see they need to remove Obama, probably by scandal, since he wont go voluntarily.

Obama has made the dems so toxic none of them may have a chance. Although they have to see their best bet is Hillary.

James T. Kirk: [on Spock] Who was that pointy-eared bastard?

Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy: I don’t know, but I like him.

Lourdes on September 14, 2011 at 2:27 PM

Spock: [after Kirk offers surrender terms to Nero] Captain, what are you doing?

James T. Kirk: Showing them compassion. It may be the only way to earn peace with Romulus. It’s logic, Spock, I thought you’d like that.

Spock: No, not really. Not this time.

Hillary won’t move until someone else with at least some credibility enters the primary. She’s afraid of the racist tag, but once the dam bursts I expect several will follow. Hillary, Howie Dean maybe, Soupy Sales Russ Feingold, Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich, Bill Richardson.

Don’t discount the possibility that the first to enter will be a stalking horse for another.

slickwillie2001 on September 14, 2011 at 2:45 PM

Carper’s comments make me think that the internal polling the Dems are seeing may change things from Reagan over Carter in 1980 to Nixon over McGovern in 1972 from an electoral vote perspective.

The big difference here is that Tricky Dick’s coattails had little to no effect in ’72, as he actually LOST two Senate seats while gaining 12 House seats.

The Republican candidate in 2012 will likely end up with a record-breaking number of Senate seats flipping in their direction, though, not because of the candidate’s personal politics as much as the *negative* coattails of Obama poisoning the well for Dems in this cycle.

Which Fake Scandal will do him in, I wonder?

Will it be Fast and Furious, or that energy company?

Del Dolemonte on September 14, 2011 at 3:11 PM

Texas Representative Louis Gohmert is a genius. He’s absconded with the name of Obama’s jobs bill — the American Jobs Act of 2011 –and used it for his own tax-cutting bill.

But Obama did no such thing. Not only was there no bill when he delivered the speech, even this many days after the speech the bill has never been introduced in the House of Representatives where such bills must begin the legislative process.

That means that there was no bill called the “American Jobs Act of 2011,” so Rep. Gohmert was under no compulsion not to use it as a name for his own bill.

This also prevents Obama from using the name for his own bill because submitting competing bills using the same name is forbidden by House rules.

Solyndra has deep provable connections to the white house. Fast and Furious has somewhat less. They could use either or both and who knows what new dirt will emerge. This crew is extremely corrupt.

dogsoldier on September 14, 2011 at 3:14 PM

That will never happen. Michelle won’t allow it; she’s already got another four years of luxurious vacations planned.

Vyce on September 14, 2011 at 1:19 PM

I think Mooch-elle Antoinette will be VERY lucky not to have a vacation to Club Fed at some point.

She’s the kind of person whom I think will get caught in January 2013 trying to walk out with all the furniture and silverware after the indignity of the country telling her and Bambi to take a hike the prior November.

I just read about this. No dem has introduced FailBama’s bill to congress yet. LOL! He sent it over Monday and the dems are all like, “I’m not touchin’ that.” “Unh uh, nope, ain’t gonna happen.”

Who will propose it now? Someone needs to tell Failbama while he’s demanding it get passed in yet another speech.

“Uh, sir, we have a small problem? No one’s introduced the bill to congress?”

“Err what do you mean? I sent it over myself the other day…”

Unfortunately, unlike Nixon, O’bama and the Democrats have the Democrat Media on their side. It would take something huge for them to turn on him.

I’m thinking Pelosi or Clyburn will do it in the House, as Hoyer won’t touch that one with a ten-foot pole if he wants to be the next Minority Leader after Pelosi is shown the door.

As far as the Senate goes, I’m thinking that Dick Turban or Chuck The Schm*ck may do it, with an outside chance of someone in a deep blue state like Bernie “avowed socialist” Sanders of Vermont doing so since there will be little splashback on them.

Granted, the idea of having someone like Sanders introduce the bill would be its own set of belly-laughs considering that they’d have an avowed socialist who is actually to the right of Obama introducing the bill.

The prospect of a drowning Obama taking a huge number of Dems and the MSM down with him could end up doing it.

The kinds of negative coattails he’s showing right now are a sign of what they’re expecting even in blue states like New York.

Not sure. Since Louis Gohmert went to the trouble of getting this together, I would have thot he would. Why bring this to B.O. attention otherwise? Just do it!! If Boehner gets wind of it, forget it, LOL Those Repubs, always stopping short of victory:-)

bluefox on September 14, 2011 at 4:07 PM

Has this “jobs bill” even been introduced in the Senate? Reid is majority leader and he decides.

However, Boehner is Speaker of the House and he would be the one to introduce it. I think it has to be introduced into the House first, since it involves money, i.e. taxes, etc.

I still think Louis Gohmert should follow thru on his genius idea!!

Knee slappingly hilarious. Congrats, Mary. Now you know what the “hope” part of the old “Hope and Change” slogan actually means. Try clicking the heels of your ruby slippers together, repeating “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, …”.

I shudder to think of how ugly it’s going to get after the election results come in. Barry will have between Nov. 2012 and Jan. 2013 to take his revenge on the country that rejected him (and we all know how well he copes with rejection). If you think his current EO’s are destructive, wait until he knows he has nothing left to lose . . . .

AZCoyote on September 14, 2011 at 1:04 PM

Trying to remember what Carter did between Nov. ’80 & Jan. ’81. Nothing vindictive, I don’t think. IIRC, he spent his whole time tearing his hair out over the hostages, trying to get a last-minute release, only to have it shoved up his a** by the mullahs.

If Carter had had any stones, he would have told them that
1. You’ve embarrassed me long enough.
2. If the hostages aren’t released by the time Ronnie Ray-gun raises his right hand, my goodbye present to Iran is an 11:59a.m. nuke….

So will it be Gunwalker, or killing his ace-in-the-hole, Osama, to shove down the memory hole the forged birth certificate he flashed before the public’s face for a couple of days?

Personally, I’m betting that his Barry Soetero foreign-student scholarship documents are going to surface, and the resulting snowball will run him straight out of office….
