Worse and worse: New e-mails show White House rushed OMB to approve Solyndra loan

posted at 10:18 pm on September 13, 2011 by Allahpundit

I was going to do a post about the White House’s stupid new AttackWatch website, where you — yes, you — can report someone saying something mean about Barack Obama. But instead of mocking it, let’s try to get on it. Here’s an attack for them: Why was it so desperately important that Joe Biden announce the Solyndra loan at the groundbreaking ceremony for the company’s new plant that federal analysts had to be rushed through their review of a $500 million deal?

Is that good enough to make the site? Or do I have to throw in something about Obama’s birth certificate?

The August 2009 e-mails, released toThe Washington Post, show White House officials repeatedly asking OMB reviewers when they would be able to decide on the federal loan and noting a looming press event at which they planned to announce the deal. In response, OMB officials expressed concern that they were being rushed to approve the company’s project without adequate time to assess the risk to taxpayers, according to the e-mails, which were provided by Republican congressional investigators…

One e-mail from an OMB official referred to “the time pressure we are under to sign-off on Solyndra.” Another complained, “There isn’t time to negotiate.”

“We have ended up with a situation of having to do rushed approvals on a couple of occasions (and we are worried about Solyndra at the end of the week),” one official wrote. That August 31, 2009, message, written by a senior OMB staffer and sent to Terrell P. McSweeny, Biden’s domestic policy adviser, concluded, “We would prefer to have sufficient time to do our due diligence reviews.”

The White House pressure may have had a “tangible impact” on OMB’s risk assessment of the loan, the congressional investigators concluded.

In one e-mail, an OMB staff member questioned whether the review team was using the best model for determining the financial risk to taxpayers in evaluating the Solyndra deal.

“[G]iven the time pressure we are under to sign-off on Solyndra, we don’t have time to change the model,” the staffer wrote.

Another OMB staffer, when asked by Rahm Emanuel whether there was anything the White House could do to help speed things along, told him flat out that he thought Biden’s announcement should be postponed so that OMB could have “all hands on deck to make sure we get it right.” Andrew Stiles makes a good catch: Until now, the White House has insisted that it didn’t intervene in the deal, but what else would you call it if, due to time constraints, OMB was forced to use a possibly sub-standard model that led to approval of a loan that everyone else knew shouldn’t have been made?

This is how much these people care about taxpayer money. Half a billion dollars down the tubes because they wanted to get one of their speeches just right. Via Verum Serum, here’s Biden’s statement at the groundbreaking. Your tax dollars at work in the toilet.

That they put the hedge funds ahead of the taxpayers will be the illegal part in this scam.

Solyndra and the Obama scum are not cooperating. All info is gotten by subpoena. Slyndra was asked to testify and they postponed by a week “because they don’t have time now”. Maybe they are coordinating with the Holder thugs.

Still not seeing any investigations of George Kaiser.

Why is nobody asking where the money is?

Why did George Kaiser use his charitable family trust as a money laundering front?

How did George Kaiser receive a loan guarantee? Maybe because he was a 2008 blunder for Obama?

http://www.lvrj.com/business/some-question-green-investment-as-clean-energy-summit-nears-128560003.html

Reid defended the sector’s economic track record Thursday.

“Despite the predictable opposition from naysayers, strategic investments in clean-energy job creation have a strong track record in Nevada, and remain key to getting people across the state back to work,” Reid said in a statement. “Now is not the time to reduce our commitment to creating good-paying clean-energy jobs. We should be building new partnerships and encouraging friendly competition between states, regions and countries to promote innovation and breaking down 20th century barriers blocking clean-energy development.”

Reid and the Center for American Progress will co-sponsor the National Clean Energy Summit at Aria on Tuesday to discuss federal policies to jump-start growth and job formation in the green-energy sector. Policymakers including Vice President Joe Biden, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu are scheduled to participate. It’s the fourth-annual summit, and it’s worth asking: Has all the talk about green jobs paid off in worthwhile investments?

I still think it’s strange that this scandal is getting media attention from ABC News, WaPo, and others. There’s actually interest in this on their part. herm2416 on September 13, 2011 at 10:33 PM

Look, I’ve reviewed many many loan packages and it aint that hard. You asses the credit history of the company and it’s principals, you evaluate the collateral being used to secure the loan, you look at the income stream and potential income sources, document your file and send it up for underwriting. It ain’t rocket science.

This sounds like a very iffy deal that Obama pushed over the top with some BS promise of govvy contracts or special treasury dept. help in opening new markets. Final analysis: the fault lays with the folks who signed on the line that was dotted..on both the lender and borrower sides.

Everyone was similarly concerned over ‘Fast and Furious’; ABC all over that one? WaPo breathlessly covering it?

Let’s revisit this in 60-90 days and see what your journalist heroes at ABC and WaPo are distracted with by then, while the people at Justice do nothing and continue to stonewall. I seem to remember an email/document trail regarding F&F that led to the WH too – how’s that panning out?

Then we’ll get a Republican president who – in the name of healing the bitter divisions of the country – will decline to have his Justice Department pursue any of it.

Obama’s approval rating is already in the toilet. This should flush it for good.

Question of the day: Which of the Republican candidates (declared or not) is above pulling this sort of slimy back-room deal?

I’m pulling for Perry, at the moment, but I don’t kid myself — he’d do a Solyndra. So would Romney, Bachmann, Huntsman, & Gingrich. Not sure about Cain, Santorum or Palin. I’ll give Ron Paul the benefit of the doubt and say he probably wouldn’t.

So where does that leave us? The less slimy politicians are the ones with no chance at all.

I remember the Watergate hearings. After a morning summer job, we’d rush home to turn on the TV. Reality shows are lame by comparison.

INC on September 13, 2011 at 10:53 PM

One slight difference-all of the networks back then carried the hearings live, because they all wanted to take out Nixon.

I am astonished that they burned through 500 million in under a year and went under. That blows my mind away more than the fact that the white house helped to commit a 500 million dollar fraud on the taxpayers. That kind of activity I expect from this regime. I am just amazed that 500 million disappeared so quickly.

Follow the money trail.

karenhasfreedom on September 13, 2011 at 10:45 PM

You’d think they would have also acquired millions from private investors as well. So how can any company have so much money and still fail within three years? Talk about incompetence or was Solyndra just a clearinghouse for cash. As a taxpayer who unwillingly funded this thing, I want their books reviewed like Enron. I don’t see much difference here. Someone better be prosecuted.

Then do in depth pieces on George Kaiser, his family, his education, his houses, his ranches, his hedge funds, any other controversies he may have been involved with previously, anything that might look like a coverup in his background, his potential involvement with Al Gore in any Green Tech schemes, and his relationship to other Democrat power brokers.

ExpressoBold on September 13, 2011 at 11:02 PM

Here’s an idea…why don’t we assemble on Kaisers front lawn and scream at his family (esp. the young children) until he admits the WH ran the whole deal for a photo op?

BobMbx on September 13, 2011 at 11:52 PM

Incompetence, corruption, and ruin.
Obama is awesome.

Expect a mysterious fire at the FBI over Thanksgiving weekend that happens to destroy all of the records the FBI has collected from everyone?

GaltBlvnAtty on September 14, 2011 at 12:02 AM

Stephen Chu needs to resign.

Now.

GaltBlvnAtty on September 14, 2011 at 12:02 AM

There is a theory out there that the FBI raids are intended to simply tie up all evidence for a year or two and keep it from a congressional investigation.

I wouldn’t put it past the idiot Holder.

slickwillie2001 on September 14, 2011 at 12:22 AM

You mean that OMB was forced to approve the loan before they had a chance to do their due diligence?

Hmmmmm… where have we heard something like that before?

Oh yes, our friendly Botox laden senior congresswoman & former speakeasy of the House, Nancy Pelosi, when lobbying to pass Obamaniacare:

“Uh, duh, uh, we like, umm, have to pass the bill, uh, to, ER, ahhh, find out what’s in it.” (my translation, but it’s close)

In reference to Biden’s speech: Gafftastic! All you get when you fly towards the sun is burn up. An ingenious plan, Joe! One fundamental thing you forgot–the sun does NOT create jobs, the private sector does.

And this guy is second in command?!

If Fast and Furious won’t sink Turdboy, why should this? At best it’s just another of the thousand cuts, self-inflicted, that his fluffers in the media have to slap a bandaid on. You’d think they would eventually tire of it but they never do.

Anyone else feeling a chill from the news of the news of the Obama-Chekist website?

Welcome to post-democracy America. This is not the first time the messiah’s White House has tried collecting names of critics. For a man who debunks and belittles the criticism that he’s a Marxist, he sure tends to do things that Marxists do.

As far as the media-no Marxist would survive without a complicit media. Simply put,he owns them. They are already in their post-freedom mode so identical to the media behind the old iron curtain. These folks are complete ideologues of the worst kind -superior folks who will eagerly help take away anyone’s freedom, because freedom from their control is the real enemy, and that means truth is the evil they must contain. For truth will, in the words of nature’s God, set us free. And, they can never keep power over free men.
It’s not ignorance that allows it -many choose not to be free, but to be told it is good to be cared for by the nanny state.
