Worse and worse: New e-mails show White House rushed OMB to approve Solyndra loan

posted at 10:18 pm on September 13, 2011 by Allahpundit

I was going to do a post about the White House’s stupid new AttackWatch website, where you — yes, you — can report someone saying something mean about Barack Obama. But instead of mocking it, let’s try to get on it. Here’s an attack for them: Why was it so desperately important that Joe Biden announce the Solyndra loan at the groundbreaking ceremony for the company’s new plant that federal analysts had to be rushed through their review of a $500 million deal?

Is that good enough to make the site? Or do I have to throw in something about Obama’s birth certificate?

The August 2009 e-mails, released toThe Washington Post, show White House officials repeatedly asking OMB reviewers when they would be able to decide on the federal loan and noting a looming press event at which they planned to announce the deal. In response, OMB officials expressed concern that they were being rushed to approve the company’s project without adequate time to assess the risk to taxpayers, according to the e-mails, which were provided by Republican congressional investigators…

One e-mail from an OMB official referred to “the time pressure we are under to sign-off on Solyndra.” Another complained, “There isn’t time to negotiate.”

“We have ended up with a situation of having to do rushed approvals on a couple of occasions (and we are worried about Solyndra at the end of the week),” one official wrote. That August 31, 2009, message, written by a senior OMB staffer and sent to Terrell P. McSweeny, Biden’s domestic policy adviser, concluded, “We would prefer to have sufficient time to do our due diligence reviews.”

The White House pressure may have had a “tangible impact” on OMB’s risk assessment of the loan, the congressional investigators concluded.

In one e-mail, an OMB staff member questioned whether the review team was using the best model for determining the financial risk to taxpayers in evaluating the Solyndra deal.

“[G]iven the time pressure we are under to sign-off on Solyndra, we don’t have time to change the model,” the staffer wrote.

Another OMB staffer, when asked by Rahm Emanuel whether there was anything the White House could do to help speed things along, told him flat out that he thought Biden’s announcement should be postponed so that OMB could have “all hands on deck to make sure we get it right.” Andrew Stiles makes a good catch: Until now, the White House has insisted that it didn’t intervene in the deal, but what else would you call it if, due to time constraints, OMB was forced to use a possibly sub-standard model that led to approval of a loan that everyone else knew shouldn’t have been made?

This is how much these people care about taxpayer money. Half a billion dollars down the tubes because they wanted to get one of their speeches just right. Via Verum Serum, here’s Biden’s statement at the groundbreaking. Your tax dollars at work in the toilet.

I can’t believe I have been writing this same sentence for nearly three years: Every day – something more appalling than the day before!

You should have been at the Unemployment office helping to file all the 900 new applicants.
Day of Service.

No need, the 900 jobs are already available because of the Mohave Solar project – 1.2 B$ loan

Whatever.

Let’s get back to the real story, that Rick Perry is a drugpushing kingpin or something.

As I was flipping through the channels last night on my way to Special Report, I saw that Solyndra was the lead story on ABC news. Also, Sheryl Atkisson of CBS was the first to break Fast & Furious/Gunwalker. Mayber there’s hope! Nahhhh….

so we’re now at (1,200,000,000$ + 500,000,000$)/900 = 1,888,888$/job

No one impeached FDR for doing $hit like this.
Patronage.
It happens all the time.
It is how Obama got elected in the 1st place.
It is why he’s trying to push out a new stimulus.
To buy some badly needed votes.
AttackWatch is part of the attempt to silence the angry voters against him.

Anyone else feeling a chill from the news of the news of the Obama-Chekist website?

I went to it & it is eerie looking.
The intent to stifle normal dissent is obvious.
They’re not even trying to hide their motives.
So who is with me? I’m thinking about deluging AttackWatch with emails every day concerning Obama’s attacks on America & her citizens.

I think I’ll send one asking what happened to illegal alien Uncle Omar. He was arrested for DUI, determined to be a fugitive from a long-standing deportation order, and then suddenly he gets released and disappears into the ether.

How many U.S. citizens arrested for DUI get to just walk away?

There is one standard of law for people in this country who have some connection to Obama (or who are part of one of his voter groups), and a very different standard for the rest of us. We’ve become a banana republic, where the only thing that matters is who you know (or who you’re related to).

I have half a mind to report every article on his job approval rating and bad economic news.

It took just 13 minutes for a liberal talking point to make it…fossten called it.
Let’s wake up you liberal robots, you need to get your act together and get your retorts against the leading Republican candidate down to under 10 minutes, 5 or less would be our goal…
Now here are the points so far:
He is gay
He is for open borders
He is for illegal immigrants
He is corporate controlled
He is easily bought and sold
He is a dictator/fascist/make up your own name
These are basically the same points used against Bush/Cheney, and most any other Republican, they have worked for decades, let’s keep it rolling and I don’t want to see anymore 13 minute delays in attacking…

Special Prosecutor for Fast & Furious, Solyndra, and any other theft of stimulus money. Follow the money all the way to the White House. If Scooter Libby and Blago merited a special prosecution, this may need several.I suspect they have stolen every bit of the stimulus money since it seems to have disappeared without affecting any job creation or stimulating effect.Theft on such a grand scale will be hard to hide.

Marco on September 14, 2011 at 9:20 AM

Obama, you suck.

How’s that for an attack?

Ward Cleaver on September 14, 2011 at 9:56 AM

It is interesting to note that Halliburton was lambasted as being everything evil while getting no bid contracts from the previous administration. They are a contracting company to the government for goods and services which have very few, if any, competitors. They are still surviving and creating jobs for countless numbers of employees and suppliers. In addition aren’t they a public company that has traditionally made money for investors? On the other hand this administration sinks half a billion dollars into a hole, called Solyndra, that swallows it up without a burp and creates nothing but more debt for the tax payers.

me_a_name on September 14, 2011 at 10:01 AM

Obama going to the same well again -

Just heard on Fox Radio news -

This is Bush’s fault b/c the Solyndra loan paper work was created during the Bush administration.

Do these guys EVER look in the mirrow?

“The charges of crony capitalism being leveled against me are obviously just politically motivated since everyone knows that I am a socialist” – Obama /s

AverageJoe on September 14, 2011 at 10:06 AM

Failbama pushed this through for his pal who bundled campaign donations, KNOWING the comapny would fail.

WHERE”S THE MONEY OBAMA? You gave your friend a half billion dollars. WHERE’s THE MONEY?

dogsoldier on September 14, 2011 at 10:32 AM

I say better and better. But I assume that any of the money that got spent on something beneficial or even neutral was by mistake.

gonnjos on September 14, 2011 at 10:04 AM

Exactly, and Bush… didn’t give them a loan; but that’s just because his OMB research said that Solyndra would run out of cash in 2011… around September of 2011 actually.

Which is weird to see Solyndra run out of cash around September of 2011. Clearly this is Bush’s fault for accurately assessing the business, seeing they were going bankrupt, and denying them a loan… leaving that opportunity for Obama to shoot himself in the foot again.

It’s like putting landmines on the walking trail; anyone with any ability to read people would know Obama couldn’t avoid walking into a failure like that… Bush should have given the loan to save Obama from making this mistake.

Or something like that; I’m not sure how this spin is supposed to work.

gekkobear on September 14, 2011 at 11:14 AM

There isn’t time to negotiate. Just do it now. There isn’t time to read the bill. Just pass it now. After all, there’s fierce moral urgency! Do it, do it, do it, before anyone catches on to what we’re up to.

RebeccaH on September 14, 2011 at 11:59 AM

Half a billion dollars down the tubes because they wanted to get one of their speeches just right.

I think not. Rather:

Half a billion dollars down the tubes because they needed to get their quid pro quo with a campaign cash bundler just right.

There’s not a sliver of difference between this and their UAW bailouts.
