Reuters pining for the Gore presidency?

posted at 11:25 am on September 12, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Al Gore will offer a 24-hour telethon, Reuters reports, in order to convince AGW skeptics that the world is coming to an end.  Presumably this will take place on Gore’s own Current TV, but we don’t know that for sure, because Reuters didn’t bother to include the actual channel in its report.  However, Reuters does want people to take Gore  super serial on this topic, because he was the former President, or something:

Former President Al Gore will renew his 30-year campaign to convince skeptics of the link between climate change and extreme weather events this week in a 24-hour global multi-media event.

Former President?  Of what? Not of the US, a fact that seems to have escaped the layers of fact-checkers and editors at Reuters — and did for at least two hours.  They finally fixed it around 11 am ET.  Here’s the screenshot before the correction, which took place without noting the error:

It’s nothing more than just a silly, sloppy mistake, of course, but that doesn’t make it any less amusing.

The actual story on which Reuters reported is also pretty amusing.  Gore wants to blow the lid off of the climate-skepticism scam, as he sees it:

“There will be 200 new slides arguing the connection between more extreme weather and climate change,” Trewin Restorick, chief executive of the event’s UK partner Global Action Plan, told Reuters on Monday.

“There will be a full-on assault on climate skeptics, exploring where they get their funding from.”

Slides? Well, nothing says entertainment like 24 hours of a slideshow.  Who else will be part of this telethon — Aunt Tilly with her vacation pics from Yellowstone?  Or will that prove too exciting for the Jerry Lewis of climate-change hysteria?

While we’re looking at funding, perhaps someone might like to take a look at where funding originates for the AGW crowd, too.  Hint: It comes from governments that might see an interest in central control of energy production.  For that matter, we can also point out that Gore himself has a financial interest in the kind of carbon trading schemes that AGW activists want imposed around the world.  How about an exposé on that?  We wouldn’t even need 24 hours for that one.

Your efforts would be better spent providing me a few GOOD links.

Any links to these assertions? I’m not being cynical. Just asking for the evidence.

The deal appeared to pay off in a big way last week, when the Energy Department announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants.

The second link is a pro Gore link.

Beyond investment interests, his foundation works with a number of affiliate organizations to find solutions to the problems of climate change and global warming in ways that “diversifies and strengthens the global network of concerned individuals who want to take action now on climate issues”.

I believe there is a connection to his assertive, angry push for AGW, and his rants against those who don’t believe…and the money he stands to make, or lose on it. He’s not motivated because he care, he’s motivated, because it makes him rich(er).

Thanks for the link. I’m not finding this organization very helpful in debunking AGW though. From the site:

Hence we see the Rasmussen Reports poll last month that showed a strong majority of the public believes scientists who study climate change have falsified research data in order to support their own theories and beliefs.

From NotCoach’s definition above of what constitutues a serious scienctist (and I agree):

Serious scientists don’t believe or disbelieve, they theroize and test.

I don’t find this poll very scientific and therefore useful in vefifying or confirming AGW.

I have done my own research to a point. I’ve Googled. Isn’t that a great method of scientific inquiry? I don’t think so. I don’t think so. What I have found didn’t seem very solid. That’s why I was asking for something GOOD.

I appreciate your help. Seriously.

Thanks for the links to AL Gore’s hypocrisy and motive. I asked for that. What I’m having trouble with though are links debunking AGW.

I’m coming to the conclusion that AGW is real but is promoted by alarmists making $$$ off of solutions that are unscientific, untested and instead are tax burdens and unconstitutional.

I have an AGW friend who is real smart and makes a good case for it. He even recognizes that Gore is a hypocrite. But that isn’t enough for him. He will not bend on stopping the liberals pushing forward with untested and unscientific agenda. He says claims that conservatives are the unscientific ones and have to bend first.

shick on September 12, 2011 at 2:25 PM

It doesn’t matter to Al if global warming happens or not. This is a telethnon to financially benefit AlGore. All the global warming nonsense is artifically created panic that puts money in the pockets of those spreading the panic.

There is a lot of info out there in cyber space. Just start typing in your search ending.

Here’s one to start with. The data from East Anglia has been exposed for awhile now, as faked.

Thank G*d for 537 Florida voters that Gore never was President.

A 30-year campaign? He’s been at this since 1981 when Reagan was president?

A link between “climate change” and extreme weather? If the climate gets drier, you get more droughts. If it gets wetter, you get more floods. If it gets colder, you get more snowstorms. Gee, who’d a thunk it?

And what does this have to do with the price of coal in China?

Steve Z on September 12, 2011 at 2:50 PM

I have an AGW friend who is real smart and makes a good case for it.

Really? I’d like to hear. No seriously.

Of course the problem with this whole thing comes down to this:

The Climate Research Unit at East Anglica produced one of the long-term data sets suitable for use with numerical models. What they refused to do, however, is a) release the original data (and yes, I understand that there are and am infuriated by confidentiality agreements regarding data), b) release the process that takes the orginal data, quality controls it, and puts it in grid so it can be fed into a computer.

And at one point Dr. Jones (head of the CRU) refused to release it to a critic because he didn’t want the critic to use his work to tear down that work. Hint for Dr. Jones: that’s how science, real science works.

Here’s a linky for you: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/christopherbooker/6679082/Climate-change-this-is-the-worst-scientific-scandal-of-our-generation.html

Here’s a take away quote from the above: Most incriminating of all are the emails in which scientists are advised to delete large chunks of data. Again, that’s not how you do science.

And since some/much/all(?) of the orginal data at the CRU has been “lost”, it becomes impossible to double check their work.

Which means their data is worse than worthless.

AGW=fraud
Climate change= normal changes in our climate. IF the climate is changing the best way to spend our money would be in moving populations that would suffer. Spending any money on trying to change the climate is a fools errand.

Thanks. I’ll look at them later. I think I’ve seen the nail in the coffin before and the Climatoligists have their own explanation. But what I have a problem with is that the scandal in itself doesn’t disprove the claim. It only exposes some who propose it.

Exploring the net for good resources is not the best method for verification. Any side can make a good story. Investigating the actual science is where the conclusion should lie.

SHICK, HERES SOME THOUGHT FOR YOUR CURIOUS MIND IN SEARCH OF FACTS:

EVERYTIME THE EARTH HAS WARMED OVER ITS EXISTENCE, SO HAVE THE OTHER PLANETS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM. EVERY TIME EARTH HAS COOLED OVER ITS EXISTENCE, THE OTHER PLANETS HAVE COOLED AS WELL.

WHAT IS ONE FACTOR THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON?

WHEN ANCIENT MAN WAS LIVING ON A PLANET EARTH COVERED IN 3/4 ICE AND NATURAL FAUNA THAT IS NOW EXTINCT, WAS IT THEIR POLLUTION AND WARMING THAT CAUSED THE GLACIERS TO RECEDE AND THE MAMMOTHS TO DIE OUT?

THINK REALLY HARD.

WHEN ANCIENT MAN FOUND THE GLACIERS RECEDING AND THE PLANET WARMING, WAS IT A MORE CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR LIFE, OR A MORE HARSH ENVIRONMENT FOR LIFE? DO WE GROW CROPS IN SIBERIA? CAN WE GROW CROPS IN ANTARCTICA? WHY OR WHY NOT?

A WARM PLANET IS A HEALTHY PLANET FULL OF LIFE. A COLD PLANET IS A DEAD PLANET.

NOW ARE WE TO ASSUME THAT US HUMANS, MODERN MAN, ARE SO POWERFUL, AND SO DESTRUCTIVE, AND SO IMPORTANT, THAT WE ARE ALTERING THE COURSE OF CELESTIAL MECHANICS? DO YOU KNOW WHAT CELESTIAL MEANS? HOW ABOUT PLANETARY PHYSICS, IS THAT EASIER? ARE US HUMANS REALLY POWERFUL ENOUGH TO WARM THE EARTH ON OUR OWN INITIATIVE? ARE WE POWERFUL ENOUGH TO GO “PUT OUT” THE SUN? WE COULD LAUNCH EVERY NUCLEAR WEAPON EVER IN EXISTENCE AT THE SUN AND WASTE TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO FIGHT THE NATURAL MECHANICS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM, AND WE WOULD LOOK THAT MUCH MORE STUPID AND PRETENTIOUS AS A RACE AND CIVILIZATION.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANTHROPOGENIC POLLUTION AND ANTHROPOGENIC CLIMATE CHANGE? YES. ONE EXISTS, ONE DOESNT.

I don’t believe that Michael Mann can stop the Freedom of Information Act, although he’s trying to block it. Why wouldn’t he want everything out in the open if he’s been ethical and above board?

Dr Evil on September 12, 2011 at 4:01 PM

Michael Mann and Al Gore both should know once something is published on the internet it’s on the internet forever :)

It’s a moot point. I don’t believe Mann can do more than stall the release of the records in question. Will they be the smoking gun? I don’t know, but it may certainly lead a forensic computer scientist to the global blow dryer.

They falsified the data, for what purpose?

If AGW were real, there’d be no need to fake data, or place thermometers near sources of heat, to make it SEEM hotter.

Big money is involved. When a wife/hubby is murdered, the first person they look at , is the spouse. The motive, is more often times than not, money. Same thing here. There is BIG money involved here, and Gores desperation is exposing him for what he, and this truly is.

He’s a scam artist, and he’s convinced many to go along with it. Either because as someone else said…they’re gullible, or because they’ve invested into it as well. And those that have, do NOT want to lose that money.

Often it’s said here. Follow the money!!!

Careful of a scumbag like Gore.

You see – snake oil salesmen prey on weakness, namely economic weakness; which could be why they flooded the West and Middle America during the Dust Bowls.

With earthquakes, tropical storms, rain, blizzard snow combined with a horrid economy and employment – this fool and his minions are playing to the weakness of people.

Now – does he have less equity than just 2 years ago – sure does -but there are those in certain outlets and ideological leanings who will use this as “scientific proof” of man made global warming – whie searching for the anti believers “fund raising”

Jim Jones got his people to drink the kool aid… at the highest level of disenchantment among his people, not towards the beginning.

No jobs + BS Global Warming + a “New Jobs Plan”, which taxes Oil Companies = Boogey Man Legislation

Careful.

Odie1941 on September 12, 2011 at 4:34 PM

Oh – and everyone remember Gore’s “Earth Day” – on 6 continents for “Mother Earth”…

Yeah – it made Al a few million – along with fly by night performers – literally who flew in private jets and were paid hundreds of thousands to perform a few songs…

Total net destruction (using psychotic Enviro liberal calculations) – a few hundred thousand tons of garbage, sewage, waste, filth; with a few hundred million tons of carbon in the environment…

Thats Al Gore – a man of the Planet, for the Planet… as long as the check clears.

Odie1941 on September 12, 2011 at 4:41 PM

shick,

As an Industrial Engineer in Modeling, Simulation, and Experimental Design (IOW, I’m trained precisely in how to build and validate the models that AGW uses), I can tell you that quite literally everything hinges on your data.

The East Anglia CRU’s data cannot be duplicated, and not even the methodology of how it was obtained is known.

This, by the very ‘science’ that these people literally worship, puts ANY model that relies on this data unable to be validated, which means any prediction it makes cannot be statistically worthwhile.

What’s interesting is that my sister is an Environmental Engineer, so she understands the content of these models better than I do. She says that no climate change model adequately reflects the impact of water vapor on temperature, because the effect size is unknown. However, it is known that water vapor affects climate far more than carbon dioxide. This is a structural issue in these models.

I can’t say that AGW is false. I can say that every model I have personally reviewed of AGW is bad science.

Otherwise, Gore is counting on hard times flushing the chumps out.

Dr Evil on September 12, 2011 at 6:11 PM

Watts Up With That is one of the best sites out there for discussing the science honestly.

But the simple fact is that AGW is not proven. CO2 is a piss poor greenhouse gas. Temperatures historically lead CO2 in the geological record (which means temperature goes up first). There is no recorded forcing in the atmosphere required to make CO2 driven AGW work. And very recent work (actual testing and not a model) demonstrates that the atmosphere is losing far more heat into space then all the bogus models behind AGW account for. But that is the problem. They don’t do science; they make models where they input their own made up data for things they do not know.
