Quotes of the day

posted at 10:23 pm on September 9, 2011 by Allahpundit

“A tentative thumbs-up.

“That was the assessment from economists, who offered mainly positive reviews of President Barack Obama’s $447 billion plan to stimulate job creation…

“Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, estimated that the president’s plan would boost economic growth by 2 percentage points, add 2 million jobs and reduce unemployment by a full percentage point next year compared with existing law.”

***
“[I]n reality, ARRA and AJA are strikingly similar. Let’s drill it down ‘line by line,’ as the president likes to say…

“Much of Obama’s speech from last night was directly imported from other addresses. It was full of his usual tropes – strawmen characterizations of his opponents, a soaring paean to American greatness that only ever mentioned big government, and the typical denunciations of ‘politics as usual,’ implicitly defined as everything that hurts his political prospects in 2012.

“And here we can see how the policies are just old leftovers from previous Obama proposals that haven’t really worked.”

***
More spending, more debt: The Budget Control Act passed in August called for $917 billion in deficit reduction spread out over the next decade. Most of that, however, is slated to take place in latter years, with just $7 billion in cuts set to occur next year. The plan President Obama is proposing would spend $450 billion now — money that would have to be borrowed now — thus dramatically increasing the deficit now. The total cost of the plan would not only wipe out the $7 billion in savings scheduled for next year, it would eat up nearly half of the $917 billion in long-term savings, which is still a largely speculative figure at this point, given the fact that future Congresses could simply call the whole thing off if they so pleased. When you take into account the additional interest payments on that $450 billion, the price tag grows considerably.

Stimulus 2.0: Not only is the president’s plan merely a rehash of the first stimulus package, which failed spectacularly. It is actually more expensive in annual terms. The original stimulus cost $800 billion but was spread out over two years. Obama’s new plan would spend more than half that in one year.”

***
“My least favorite part of the bill is probably the conceit that, as Obama put it, ‘everything in this bill will be paid for. Everything.’ This is a particularly obvious symptom of the virulent disease which has long reached pandemic proportions in Washington — taking a headline from George Magnus, I call it Deficit Attention Disorder.

“This is a stimulus bill; stimulus bills, by their nature, can’t be revenue-neutral or fully paid-for. And this one isn’t. Instead, it seems like Obama is going to tot up the cost of the bill — $447 billion is the number doing the rounds — and add it to the $1.5 trillion that the deficit supercommittee is being charged with cutting from the budget over a decade-long period. That’s not paying for a bill, it’s passing the buck to someone else.

“And it’s pretty sad commentary on the state of American politics — and the way that the horrible personal-finance metaphor seems to have become embedded in the national psyche — that Obama considers this both necessary and a good idea.”

***
“Speaking on behalf of millions of Americans who’ve grown angry and frustrated over the president’s 32-month ineffective inactivity on the job creation front, President Obama on Thursday told members of Congress they really have to do something about the crummy employment situation — and do it quickly.

“Citing the plight of millions of struggling Americans whose wishes for jobs Obama ignored for most of the 961 days he’s been in office while chasing shinier healthcare and financial reforms, Obama said it was time that Congress stop blaming others. He said it was time members take responsibility for their inaction and halt their phony partisan games and political circus acts that pervade Washington culture.

“Because the Americans Obama hasn’t been listening to are really hurting now.”

Speaking of jobs–has this video been seen around here?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkDJpGXHsIw&feature=youtu.be

IHS Global Insight published a 277 page study quantifying the opportunity for job creation and GDP growth in the United States. OMSA distilled that info into a 4-minute video. If President Obama and his regulators — Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and BOEMRE director Michael Bromwich — simply cleared the backlog of offshore drilling permits and exploration plans, the oil and gas industry could return to operations at historic norms. But today, that’s not the case. The slow-pace of administrative approvals leaves exploration and development activities at a near standstill. Clear the bureaucratic gridlock and industry will create 230,000 jobs by 2012.

..it is one of the more puzzling aspects of the commentary here. Ronald Reagan, David Horowitz, Eldridge Cleaver, and many, many others came to conservatism after an epiphany. Of those, Eldridge Cleaver always intrigued me the most. Per Wikipedia:

“By the 1980s, Cleaver had become a conservative Republican. He appeared at various Republican events and spoke at a California Republican State Central Committee meeting regarding his political transformation. In 1986 Cleaver embarked on an unsuccessful campaign to win the United States Senate seat held by Democratic incumbent Sen. Alan Cranston, as he received less than two percent of the vote in the Republican Party primary.”

You people need to realize that the first Trillion Dollar Stimulus, and all the other Billion dollar programs were locked into the “Base Line Budget”…

… What ever Obowma now adds to that budget will only increase the deficit by Trillions more.

Once a spending bureaucracy exists under the current political elite ruling class…

… it never goes away.

So you have failed policies and spending, on top of failed policies and spending, on top of failed policies and spending…

… and the failed policies and spending that got us into this mess in the first place are still in place and spending!

THAT is the problem we face…

DrMagnolias on September 10, 2011 at 7:13 AM

So you have failed policies and spending, on top of failed policies and spending, on top of failed policies and spending…..7%

So, the question will be, (if conservative Republicans take Obama’s “warning” to put politics aside), would Republicans risk loosing their seats, (implementing their principles) to say no to Obama’s failed policies and reckless spending? Or do they look at the polls, and do what most politicians would do, namely what’s politically expedient.

As predicted, Obama did exactly what everyone expected from a Presidency on the ropes, creating the narrative that if Republicans reject his proposal, they are, in effect putting politics ahead of the needs of a nation. But, does this nation really need more taxes and spending to get people back to work? Do conservative Republicans think that the Tea Party Americans have become so diluted that it won’t matter if they “go along to get along”, rubber-stamping Obama’s ploy, to remain politically relevant in the next election cycle?

I would submit that a majority of the conservative electorate are seeing this political game being played out by Obama, and would love to have their representatives call his bluff. Further, even voting independents have to see Obama’s “doubling down” (adding more debt to this debtor nation), as a desperate political maneuver, rather than a sincere attempt get this country back to work.

President Obama, the media, and liberal Democrats would like to completely ignore the fact that in November of 2010, most Americans said “enough spending” or you’re out. One has to wonder if even conservative Republicans have conveniently forgotten what transpired just a short year ago. Short memories might just bite them all in the butt, and the results might be even shorter political careers.

scrubjay on September 10, 2011 at 7:54 AM

Oh boy, that’s funny. Our objective, unbiased, taxpayer-funded “news” service is hiding Barry’s unforced errors for him.

Remember all the days of lefty ridicule when Sarah Palin made some off-hand comments about Paul Revere? Even though several historians pointed out that her comments about Revere’s actions were essentially correct, the lefty media were trumpeting the remarks as proof of her ignorance and stupidity. But when Obama goes before a specially-called joint session of Congress with a prepared speech and makes an embarrassing and factually inaccurate claim about one of his self-professed heroes (Lincoln), not only does the left not report it, they actually try to hide it! Friggin’ unbelievable.

AZCoyote on September 10, 2011 at 8:05 AM

One has to wonder if even conservative Republicans have conveniently forgotten what transpired just a short year ago.

The entrenched GOP saw it, didn’t like it at all, and may just ignore it, going with the masses of lemmings who want a bigger free lunch and more lies they can go beddie-bye with and dream sweet dreams. Most are not sophisticated voters. Most never hear any criticism or economic reasons for opposing Obama from the right -just the unanswered -pushing grannie over the cliff games.

I spent years wondering why the GOP (Think Bush and McCain) doesn’t fight back, thinking wimps -I was wrong. Watching them collectivly take down Palin(the one fighting all parties) and wanting for the GOP candidate another dont-rock -the -boat RINO in their hearts, Romney/Christie/Guiliani-liberals of the worst kind -unpredictable.

I finally realized, the GOP doesn’t want to rock the boat. More than anything, they are perfectly happy being in second place and getting rich, earning royal type million(s) dollar pensions, enjoying apartheid type medical care, hob-nobbing with the Washington elites, enjoying celebrity, while pretending to be principled defenders of the constitution. With few exceptions -they’ve sold their soul. The left wants more badly to take away our freedom than the GOP wants to risk their fat lifestyles protecting it.Don’t wait for them -that’s why Palin in the only true breath of fresh air.

Don L on September 10, 2011 at 8:05 AM

Obama trying to kick off his re-election campaign by trying to buy off some more votes with money he does not have.
Fail.

And…

…boost economic growth by 2 percentage points, add 2 million jobs and reduce unemployment by a full percentage point

So then to get unemployment down to about zero, all it would take is 5 times that much money??? And once the tax/debt/borrowed money is gone what happens to those jobs???

Marxiam said Socialism is the transition state between Capitalism and Communism. Capitalism is an ecomomic model of free market and demand to drive production. Communism is an economic model of a command market that relies on the government to decide what is produced and how it is distributed.

In another word, Socialism must destroy a capitalist economy, expand government control, then fail itself as an economy to bring about the conditions for the government to take over all forms of production and distribution of goods on the bases of from; according to their abilites and to each according to his needs. That is the command economic system that we call commonly call communism.

Obama knows that his proposals are just rehashes of previous rejected and disproven solutions that have no chance of passing. That is what he is counting on and what he needs for his campaign for re-election.

By presenting his job bill proposal directly to Congress he has effectively set up his talking points for campaigning and provided himself with a distraction from his negative failures. At the same time he has painted the GOP with political obstruction to his solution on job creation and the economic recovery when they refuse to pass his entire bill. In otherwords he is passing his failures to Congress and trying to make republicans own them.

He has wasted no time cashing in on his political sly of hand. He now has the ability to call his campaigning as seeking support for his jobs bill. That means he is able to make up some of the short fall of donations by making the tax payers fund his campaign trips into states he needs to win in the next election.

We probably should have seen this coming. They have always planned their world tours to have some, often minor, political agenda so they could fund the trip with tax payers dollars and some change from their pockets.

Remember; Socialism has to fail, to succeed, as it is the step between Capitalism and Communism.
