Pfeiffer: People will love Obama when they get to know the GOP
posted at 10:05 am on September 2, 2011 by Jazz Shaw
Pay no attention to those sagging poll numbers or the public’s rather dismal view of Barack Obama’s handling of the economy. In the view of the White House, this too shall pass. The cure for such political doldrums? Just wait until the public gets a load of these Republican clowns who want to replace him!
President Obama is struggling in the polls against would-be Republican challengers because voters don’t know the GOP contenders well enough yet, a top White House official said Thursday.
Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer expressed confidence that Obama would perform better against former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or Texas Gov. Rick Perry once Americans familiarize themselves with those GOP presidential candidates.
“My guess is that a significant portion of the people polled, the American people, don’t know what Mitt Romney’s economic plan is yet,” Pfeiffer said on MSNBC. “I’m confident they will know that he supports Cut, Cap and Balance, which would essentially end Medicare, end Social Security.”
It’s an interesting bit of spin, I suppose. On the one hand, you can almost cut Pfeiffer a little slack when talking about Rick Perry. He’s only been in the race for a few weeks, and outside of Texas and the inner circle of hard core political geeks, voters are just getting to know him. (Though poll trends indicate that the more they see, the more they’re beginning to warm up.) But… Romney?
At this point Mitt Romney has been running for president since, I believe, the same year that Flashdance was the number one movie in the nation. His name recognition among primary voters currently sits at 86%. To get people with a higher score – aside from Barack Obama – you’ve got to start including Lady Gaga and Oprah. People know Mitt Romney.
Not to toot my own horn, but this really does fall in line with a prediction I made earlier this week. The knock on Romney for CC&B made sure to work in the phrase, “would essentially end Medicare, end Social Security.” This is the theme that Obama will run on in 2012, as will all of the Democratic congressional hopefuls. (Any discussions of how Obama offered to cut entitlements during the debt ceiling debate will be considered ill mannered and off limits, thank you very much.)
Lest you think this story too fanciful for reality, here’s the video. The expression on Pfeiffer’s face is sort of priceless as he attempts to paint lipstick on this… darn it. Almost forgot the “new tone.”

Uhm, Mr Pfeiffer? They already know the guy in the white house, so any comparison will make him look bad. This is like saying your rancid beef may be bad, but wait until you find out what goes into that hot dog.

Well, I think the employment numbers going back to January 2009 are going to hurt Obama more than any GOP candidate. Every smart person knows that Pres. Bush had to deal with a recession when he took office and then 8 months later came an attack meant to destroy our economic structure. We actually came out of both of them within just a few years.
If this stays at close to 9% in November 2012, that is all they have to mention. 4 years of 9+% . . . there is no excuse. Blame can’t be assigned to the GOP or Pres. Bush on that one.

And for those youngsters that don’t remember Flashdance, it was 1982! What amazes me about Romney is that he talks about career politicians not being able to fix our situation, but he would would have been a career politician had he won.

The medicscare campaign won’t work because both it and SS are on track to go bankrupt — and people get that now. We have Greece, England, other countries to point to to show what happens when the money just runs out. The GOP can run on SAVING those programs through reform, while the dems will just keep saying “everything’s fine, everything’s fine.” It will come down to: “What is your plan, Mr. Zero, to save Medicare and Social Security?” He doesn’t have a plan, won’t have a plan, so he’ll look out of touch and ineffective, just trying to scare people he doesn’t really care about because if he did care he’d acknowledge that the money will run out. This is a very easy issue for the GOP to turn to an advantage.

We live in a right of center country.
It’s not the GOP that has to be concerned with the attractiveness of their candidates.
Obama is NOT a centrist, and he certainly isn’t to the right of the center. The progressives lost the Independent vote in November of 2010. I don’t think Obama is incompetent. He is making good on his promise to fundamentally change this country. First he has to tear it down, this is what he is in process of doing. How many voting American’s live in Obama’s ideological neighborhood? Turns out it’s a small number than the MSM would like you to believe, who share his ideological zip code.
The month of August added zero jobs and our GDP is 1.0. Economist have said that unemployment will stay above 9.0 though next year. But the republicans won’t be as an attractive alternative vs the minority of socialist democrats, trying to destroy our country’s foundation? Sure tell me another, once up on a time bed time story Mr Pfeiffer/
He looks like he belongs speaking in front of a bunch of teamsters. Maybe he’s confused about who is in the audience listening to his wish-casting. If wishes were horses than beggars would ride.

The voters can love Obama if they want but they aren’t going to vote for him again if their lives are miserable…

They know the name and what he looks like. Who really knows what he believes? I’m a political junky and have no idea what he believes. I couldn’t tell you why he is running, what his basic philosophy is, or what his vision for the country is.
That is sad for someone who has been running for president for at least 4 years.
Mitt polls well on name recognition and (up to Perry’s entrance) lack of credible competition in the primary (Pawlenty just never seemed like a real candidate). I expect to see Mitt’s numbers continue to go down and Perry’s go up as people become familiar with Perry and we get closer to actual votes. If we were in a situation where Obama’s approval ratings were about 50%, Mitt would continue to do well as the “safe” candidate for the general election. Because it looks like Obama is unpopular, Mitt does not have that going for him. Without a reason for a “safe” candidate, what reason is there for Mitt?
Interestingly, I bet that if Palin enters the race, a lot of estalbishment/northeastern Romney voters will migrate to Perry in order to stop Palin from getting the nomination. I’m not saying that is right, just that is my prediction. Instead of Palin’s entrance helping Mitt by splitting the conservative vote – as most predict – I think Perry will become the only credible “anybody but Palin” candidate for those GOPers who hate Palin.

Well, Mr. Pfeiffer, the people will have to elect a GOP president to find out what’s in the GOP plan.
That’s fair, isn’t it?

They don’t kknow that they reached the bottom of the hole some time ago… they are going to continue to dig. Soon they will claim that the four seasons and all good days are due only to Obama being in office and that electing anyone else will plunge the entire planet into winter and bad hair days.
As for actual substance: they got nothing.
And it shows.

“Perry is scary” is the way the left sees the GOP field right now and, not being horribly insightful as a group, how they think everyone else sees it. My liberal friends here in Texas (including one whose parents hate Perry so much that they just moved to another state) are absolutely convinced that Perry’s run increases the Dem’s and Obama’s election chances 10-fold. He is the male version of Sarah Palin to them.
