Boehner to Obama: How about giving your speech the day after the GOP debate instead? Update: Boehner cleared Wednesday date in advance? Update: Boehner denies
posted at 4:44 pm on August 31, 2011 by Allahpundit
Here’s a PDF of the letter requesting that the speech be postponed until Thursday. The reason given: Logistical difficulties, not the fact that The One’s being a jackass by trying to preempt the GOP debate. But here’s the punchline, via John McCormack:
NFL season starts next Thursday 830pm ET, Packers vs. Saints.
Your move, champ.
Meanwhile, via Mediaite, enjoy the clip below as the flack-in-chief cheerily lies through his teeth and then suggests that if Republicans have a problem with the timing, they can go right ahead and reschedule their debate — which has been set for months — in order to accommodate His Highness. You know what the worst part of this little power play is? It’s not that O is so petty that he’d try to bigfoot his competition. That can be excused, sort of, on “politics ain’t beanbag” grounds. It’s not that his jobs plan won’t do much to help or that everyone — everyone — knows that the speech will reek, filled as it’ll surely be with the usual tedious bromides from the “adult in the room” about how mean Congress is, etc. By now, expectations for Obama are so low that it’s almost impossible for him to disappoint. It’s not that doing this is actually quite stupid politically, since it risks turning the GOP debate from a Perry/Romney/Bachmann free-for-all into a free-fire zone for attacks on Obama’s economic plan. Said one Democratic consultant, “It’s a bad idea [and] seems a little small. And it suggests perhaps his jobs plan wont be that appealing because now the coverage will be about the strategy and not the substance.” It’s not even that he’s suddenly demanding the gravitas of a joint session, signaling a crisis of utmost national urgency, after having jerked around on this singularly important issue for two and a half years. Better late than never, I guess.
The worst part is that, with the economy on the brink of a double-dip and consumer confidence falling off a cliff, this guy’s mind is still so preoccupied with the campaign that he can’t muster a moment of presidential leadership without counterprogramming it against a Republican primary event. He could have given this speech at any point. Six months ago, the day after the debt-ceiling deal was struck, last week, yesterday, today, tomorrow, the day before the Republican debate, the day after. Any of those would have been fine — the earlier the better, of course, given the magnitude of the problem — but that doesn’t occur to him because his own reelection is ever foremost in his imagination. We’ve known that for months, ever since he rolled out his horrendous budget that punted on entitlements so that he’d have a freer hand to demagogue the GOP, but in case you forgot, let this refresh your memory. If you could somehow promise him right now that he’ll get a second term no matter what happens with jobs, he’d tear the speech up and watch the Packers/Saints game himself. Pathetic.
Update: Like I said: Pathetic.
Usually, the WH will work out a date in private with the Speaker & Majority Leader before going public with a request.
Update: From Fox’s Ed Henry, I’m curious to see the GOP’s response to this:
WH official says “Boehner’s office was consulted about the 9/7 date before the letter was released. No objection/concern was raised”
Update: Here’s that response now:
Boehner office says White House ignored protocol: “No one in the Speaker’s office…signed off on the date the White House announced today”

Palin has been and is the only Republican that has consistently stood against Obama. She has more balls than the rest of the field combined. It’s already starting . . . I’m seeing comments on the CNN and USA Today sites that Republicans are playing politics, that all they care about is the campaign, that they don’t care about jobs.
This was a mistake. The speaker should have stepped aside and let the President look petty.
Now Republicans are the bad guys in the story that the media will spin.
This really is the party of stupid, as Dennis Prager says.
otisframpton on August 31, 2011 at 6:56 PM
Obama did this to give credence to his CBC’s relentless talking points about everyone disrespecting their POTUS; the Tea Party is racist and Obama just can’t catch a break because of white Republicans.
How utterly pathetic. The MSM is lapping it up and spewing out the WH talking points.
Americans aren’t stupid. This will work with 19% of the population. Say goodbye to the Independents, Obama.

He can insist all he wants but if the House says no (a vote to approve is needed) then he’ll be speaking either in the Senate or out in the Rotunda.
When they do come to an agreement, Boehner ought to advise the President if he start injecting politics into a JSoC by demagoguing and smearing Republicans, the Republicans will walk out.

I’m not saying it’s a fair playing field. But don’t willingly step into a trap that’s set for you. That’s what the speaker did, IMHO. If he had agreed to the date he at least would have denied the President and the press the narrative that they wanted for this story.
Obama is a bad, but aggressive chess player in a match against Speaker Checkers. We need someone in that position who can think a few moves ahead of the angry player across the table from him or her.

Considering how BHO’s prime-time addresses have seen declining ratings since 2009, and considering how the markets tend to commit suicide every time he discusses anything related to the economy, his advisors should have him quietly release a plan at, like, 7:30pm on a Friday. I saw that too. It was interesting. On one hand he said the whole speech is obviously a kick off to Obama reelection campaign and he will have nothing new or important to say..on the other hand he seemed to think that having the debate right after on the same day would be better because the candidates could all spend their time attacking Obama’s non plan.
I don’t know, but I have to admit I was surprised when Boehner said NO. I have to wonder, what comes next? The President does not have the authority to order Congress to invite him..hmmm.
Terrye on August 31, 2011 at 7:26 PM
I left a comment there already…
First of all, Krauthammer is wrong. Obama’s speech would be on multiple channels and the rebuttal would only be on NBC… so it’s kind of worthless. Also, people get tired. They will not want to sit through a “rebuttal”. It’s better to go first.
Second, The most important part of this video is the end… where Obama’s call to “transcend politics” of whatever is shown to be complete crap by the method in which he called up this speech.
Third, Obama looks small no matter what just by pulling this stunt.
ninjapirate on August 31, 2011 at 7:26 PM
Well, lucky for you the Speaker agreed and stepped willingly into the trap that was set for him.
But . . .
Now not only is it a mud fight over politics and campaigns that the media can spin the way they want to, but the debate will probably occur AFTER the president’s speech, which means that the debate participants will not be able to use the event to tear Obama’s “plan” apart on national TV.
I see no upside to your way and more than one upside to mine.
Missed opportunity, IMHO.

I don’t know myself. But whatever happens, I blame Obama. The egomaniacal showboating narcissist.

hawksruleva on August 31, 2011 at 7:35 PM
If the Speaker had let Obama give his speech on the night he wanted and the debate was rescheduled for a later date, the debate participants could have responded. Now the debate will likely stay on the that night and Obama’s speech will be after.
Sorry for the mix up. Hopefully this clarifies my point.
otisframpton on August 31, 2011 at 7:36 PM

Compromise

Lastly, he’ll say this is a choice between his plan and those that would torture baby seals or something.

This is what annoys me. His speech is more important enough to call a Joint Session of Congress..but it is not important enough to interfere with football. That tells you that the whole thing is just propaganda.
Terrye on August 31, 2011 at 7:43 PM
A bit lost in the shuffle here is that Obama is totally trivializing the gravity of a joint session of Congress. Normally, it’s reserved for critical issues, like the eve of negotiations with the Soviet Union, or after a major attack on the U.S., or informing Congress of military action.
Now? Now Obama is using joint sessions of Congress as campaign events. He’s already insulted the Supreme Court at a similar event. He’s belittled conservatives at meetings to which he invited them. And now he’s using the House chambers to set up the GOP as the bad guy in his next campaign commercial.
This guy does nothing for the country’s well-being. He’s perfectly happy for the economy to rot while he blames it on Tea Party lynch mobs that don’t exist.
hawksruleva on August 31, 2011 at 7:43 PM
I disagree. People who enter the race and spend significant amounts of time and money trying to attain the presidency should be able to think on their feet and respond to what the President says. In real time, not after contemplating things for days on end. At this point, it should be obvious that Obama isn’t going to say anything that requires significant amounts of brainpower to figure out. He’ll call for higher taxes out of ‘fairness’. The Pubs should already have an answer for that. He’ll call for more investments in green technology. The Pubs should already have an answer for that. He’ll call for more stimulus spending. The Pubs should already have an answer for that. And so on. Any Republican who can’t give a rebuttal to any of those points 10 minutes after the President speaks doesn’t deserve the chance to be President.

If the President was seriously trying to fix the problem, then this joint session would maybe be called for (though really, if you were going to be serious, why not do it during the debt “crisis”)?
But everybody knows that what Obama proposes will never be made into a real, detailed plan. It will probably never come to a vote in the Senate. And it will definitely never pass in the House.
In the end, this is PRECISELY the partisan crap that a)turns off the precious independents, and b)does nothing to help the nation. But he’s expecting 100% cover from the media on those counts.
