Boehner to Obama: How about giving your speech the day after the GOP debate instead? Update: Boehner cleared Wednesday date in advance? Update: Boehner denies
posted at 4:44 pm on August 31, 2011 by Allahpundit
Here’s a PDF of the letter requesting that the speech be postponed until Thursday. The reason given: Logistical difficulties, not the fact that The One’s being a jackass by trying to preempt the GOP debate. But here’s the punchline, via John McCormack:
NFL season starts next Thursday 830pm ET, Packers vs. Saints.
Your move, champ.
Meanwhile, via Mediaite, enjoy the clip below as the flack-in-chief cheerily lies through his teeth and then suggests that if Republicans have a problem with the timing, they can go right ahead and reschedule their debate — which has been set for months — in order to accommodate His Highness. You know what the worst part of this little power play is? It’s not that O is so petty that he’d try to bigfoot his competition. That can be excused, sort of, on “politics ain’t beanbag” grounds. It’s not that his jobs plan won’t do much to help or that everyone — everyone — knows that the speech will reek, filled as it’ll surely be with the usual tedious bromides from the “adult in the room” about how mean Congress is, etc. By now, expectations for Obama are so low that it’s almost impossible for him to disappoint. It’s not that doing this is actually quite stupid politically, since it risks turning the GOP debate from a Perry/Romney/Bachmann free-for-all into a free-fire zone for attacks on Obama’s economic plan. Said one Democratic consultant, “It’s a bad idea [and] seems a little small. And it suggests perhaps his jobs plan wont be that appealing because now the coverage will be about the strategy and not the substance.” It’s not even that he’s suddenly demanding the gravitas of a joint session, signaling a crisis of utmost national urgency, after having jerked around on this singularly important issue for two and a half years. Better late than never, I guess.
The worst part is that, with the economy on the brink of a double-dip and consumer confidence falling off a cliff, this guy’s mind is still so preoccupied with the campaign that he can’t muster a moment of presidential leadership without counterprogramming it against a Republican primary event. He could have given this speech at any point. Six months ago, the day after the debt-ceiling deal was struck, last week, yesterday, today, tomorrow, the day before the Republican debate, the day after. Any of those would have been fine — the earlier the better, of course, given the magnitude of the problem — but that doesn’t occur to him because his own reelection is ever foremost in his imagination. We’ve known that for months, ever since he rolled out his horrendous budget that punted on entitlements so that he’d have a freer hand to demagogue the GOP, but in case you forgot, let this refresh your memory. If you could somehow promise him right now that he’ll get a second term no matter what happens with jobs, he’d tear the speech up and watch the Packers/Saints game himself. Pathetic.
Update: Like I said: Pathetic.
Usually, the WH will work out a date in private with the Speaker & Majority Leader before going public with a request.
Update: From Fox’s Ed Henry, I’m curious to see the GOP’s response to this:
WH official says “Boehner’s office was consulted about the 9/7 date before the letter was released. No objection/concern was raised”
Update: Here’s that response now:
Boehner office says White House ignored protocol: “No one in the Speaker’s office…signed off on the date the White House announced today”

John, no one exposes anything about this President. Almost nothing sticks. Or people don’t care, or something.

I wonder why Barry is wetting his pants to address the full Congress, and on TV too.
disa on August 31, 2011 at 7:58 PM
Huh? Did you even read my post???? What the hell does the media have to do with not having Republican candidates who need days to think about Obama’s speech? I responded to a post that said the candidates at the debate should need days to come up with a response to Obama’s speech. My answer was, in a nut shell, we know what he’s gonna say, so days aren’t required. Your response makes no sense at all…

Have Obama give the speech during halftime.
On the field.
Dressed in a clown costume.
justltl on August 31, 2011 at 8:00 PM
I mean, really – he doesn’t want the economy to improve, he just wants to buy time to suck as much money as he can from the private sector before the entire economy collapses. And it’s crucial that it doesn’t happen until he wins his second term.
Walking on a tightrope there, arentcha Barry?

Sweetie, you’ll just have to figure it out yourself.

More likely the the bar at the La Fonda in Santa Fe, with Ben Lujan. I don’t know for certain, but I think that that little talk was given at a nursing home in Santa Fe, NM yesterday, and most of the ‘mover and shakers’ that find themselves in Santa Fe exercise their elbows there, often quite vigorously.
Oh, the stories the staff there could tell, if they so desired.

…Leading to rumors that he will announce something huge. National Sales Tax? Civilian security force “just as big and well-funded as the US military”, aka the Obama Brownshirts? Massive Porkulus III?
If he doesn’t have something big, he will look like a fool. Make that even more of a fool.
slickwillie2001 on August 31, 2011 at 8:09 PM
I’m wondering whether Obama is going to announce a type of WPA or public works project.
He’s gotta get that unemployment number down. What better way for a leftist to do that than to create another government dependency program that will redistribute money?
justltl on August 31, 2011 at 8:15 PM
Something else that proponents of cradle-to-grave welfare don’t tell you. In Sweden (where I lived for a long time), not only is there a 31% local tax on your earnings, there is also a 24% VAT on goods. No wonder the Swedes are the least fashionable people in Europe – there’s no money to spend on fasion.

Oops, didn’t see your post, slick.
Similar idea, eh?
justltl on August 31, 2011 at 8:18 PM
I pray to Heaven he might come on and in his speech call for a national sales tax or civilian security force as big as the military. He should bring a hammer for those coffin nails though too.
hawkdriver on August 31, 2011 at 8:26 PM
Heck, I’d love to just see it normally, and have him pull his unfashionably late routine to try to drone on past the 30 minute halftime.
Dusty on August 31, 2011 at 8:27 PM
Obama has this cunning little habit of playing the Republicans by getting them in his presence and using them as window dressing while he cuts their throats. They should have learned by now never to be in his presence. He is neither a member of the Senate nor House. Tell him to e-mail you the plan and deliver his lies from the White House. He wants to make another campaign speech in the presence of his opponents so he will look bipartisan. It’s the Audacity that he promised.Short of declaring war or the state of the union speech, he should keep his sorry ass in the white house, or on the golf course, or on vacation, or fundraising.
Marco on August 31, 2011 at 8:31 PM
…until the members of the kicking team (since professional athletes run more conservative than the general population) start lining up with the POOTUS in their crosshairs.
What’s the Over/Under on the number of players on the field for the second half kickoff who make more than 250K?
rwenger43 on August 31, 2011 at 8:41 PM
it would be so great if boehner had the sack to tell obama no to the joint session. most of the country sees right thru him so its not too big a deal that he’ll get his joint session. the gop should have a walk out plan if he gets too over the top in blaming them for the economy though.
chasdal on August 31, 2011 at 8:42 PM
Doubt it will be a national sales tax because that just won’t hurt those who make more than $250K like he wants. That will hurt everyone. Even his friends on the government dole and his union friends.

Late to the thread, but a brilliant way on Boehner’s part to shove it where the sun don’t shine. Plus, it makes President DDD and company look exactly like the amateurs they are. That’s 3 from downtown, Mr. Speaker. Keep it up.
TXUS on August 31, 2011 at 8:49 PM
Sorry if someone already asked this, but do they have to go? Do they have to be in attendance? I’d like to see the entire GOP caucus go to a gym or something and watch the debate on a jumbotron with a tiny screen in the corner showing the president’s speech.
piglet on August 31, 2011 at 8:51 PM
No members have to attend any session of congress, technically, and we’d be better off if they didn’t. However, the optics of most or all of the Republicans not showing up at a Presidential address, would play right into the campaign meme of President DDD, i.e., “the great partisan divide caused by our friends on the other side of the aisle, blah, blah, blah.” In a perfect world, I’d have every Republican member of congress show up with torches and pitchforks in hand. That picture would be worth a trillion words.

This is the shrew that commanded military flights to convey herself and her allies to transcontinental destinations as if she owned the planes, the pilots, the crews, the airports, and the maintenance crews. she has absolutely no room to talk when it comes to living high on the hog, at public expense, with very little scrutiny from the media.

She is exhibit A of the overspending horde of jackals.

But how will we tell it is Obama?
BKennedy on August 31, 2011 at 9:05 PM
Oh, I think that they should go, but at the first word about blaming anyone other than himself or the Dems, they need to walk out. That would be more dramatic. They should just sit there until some determined and agreed upon trigger word. Whatever it is, it should be one that is clear that they are thumbing their noses at him. They really should stay there, but only agree with those things that are closest to shrinking the government.
I don’t plan on watching. I can’t deal with Obama. After watching the shows on NatGeo about 9/11 and watching President Bush, it really makes me kind of “homesick” for President Bush. The difference between the man and the boy/child is stark.
Voter from WA State on August 31, 2011 at 9:06 PM
I tend to agree. Obama is constantly using the Congress as props in his “I am a king” narrative, and as an American I DO NOT LIKE IT. They are separate co-equal branches of government and as such, if a certain respect is to be afforded the office of the presidency, it is to be applied equally to the Congress. I am sick and tired of the Republicans in Congress playing along nicely with this man’s spectacular arrogance and ego. I do not think they should attend, and I think they should issue a group statement saying that it would have been inappropriate for them to be participants in Obama’s crass use of the people’s house as a venue for his 2012 campaign kickoff. Play hardball, boys. Play hardball.
Rational Thought on August 31, 2011 at 9:12 PM
I think the president and the republican debate should go up against each other in Prime Time. I also think that most of the republicans in Congress should attend the debate and leave Obama talking to a half empty room. Lastly, I’m curious to see the ratings of each program after they are done.
Troy Rasmussen on August 31, 2011 at 9:13 PM
So you’re saying we’re better off giving the President what he wants now, in order to win later?
I think the GOP has used that strategy for decades, and the result is a crappy, overregulated economy and a bloated, busybody, interfering government.
The President broke protocol by trying to have a policy speech at a Join Session of Congress at the 1 time this month where it would hurt the party in charge of the Chamber he’s requesting. Saying “yes” is not merely a concession. It’s a capitulation.
hawksruleva on August 31, 2011 at 9:19 PM
Oh c’mon. Not like the President would use his speech to demean and belittle the people invited to hear him speak.
I’m sure the Supreme Court is just DYING to attend this event.
hawksruleva on August 31, 2011 at 9:20 PM
Poor Barry. He don’t get no respect. Har! I’m going to download my Obama countdown clock iPhone app now…

Simple. He needs it as video for his campaign commercial proclaiming he had a plan to save the economy, only the evil Republican racists wouldn’t pass it.
But of course, he doesn’t have a plan. He just has a speech.

Why can’t he just release the DVD of his speech from last year or the year before on how he will magically create all of these jobs in the atmosphere that he, alone with his policies and minions, stifles ALL job creation? That way, no one has to bother to attend in person, no network has to pre-empt programming, and the rest of us can ignore him. Win win, right?

I found it on Drudge:
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/08/31/obama-steps-on-gop-debate-with-jobs-speech/
Confusingly, the Drudge headline says “Reagan Debate Can Wait” (which is not what’s happening) and the Fox News headline says “Obama Accepts Request to Reschedule Jobs Speech Amid Conflict With GOP Debate”, which makes it sound as if the problem originated with the GOP.

For VAT or NST the progs would insist on some kind of deductible, and that would have to take the form of a direct payment sold as a reimbursement according to some kind of calculated basic cost of living vs income. Bonus, -it keeps the IRS in business and opens the door to a form of guaranteed income from the government.

I remember the night of the election, when he stood silently on that stage in Chicago with his nose in the air, and just posed that way for several minutes. That was the first time I really felt afraid for our nation.
slickwillie2001 on September 1, 2011 at 12:39 AM
Boy, Obama really showed the GOP who’s boss, didn’t he?
hawksruleva on September 1, 2011 at 10:39 AM
I don’t believe that Boehner approved the date earlier and neither does anyone else that has seen the Obamanation for the last 3 years. The only ones that believe that lie are the ones that will vote for him no matter what. The Obama tribe will lie straight to your face while swearing on the life of his typically white grandmother.
He figured he would back Boehner into a corner and they would cave BUT alas, Boehner finally found some balls!
SgtRed on September 1, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Speaking of optics, Boehner should shake his head and give a few facepalms whenever Obama says something stupid, and lean forward and whisper “Watch yourself bud…” whenever Obama blames the Republicans or the prior administration for his problems. Who says the speaker has to sit motionless whenever the president makes his speaches in congress?
