Michelle on Rick Perry’s smarts: You mean, compared to the economic genius in the White House?

posted at 7:28 pm on August 29, 2011 by Allahpundit

Six minutes of red meat from MM, who laid aside some sharp policy differences with Perry to defend him here. Ed already covered the “Is Perry dumb?” Politico article this morning, but now that I’ve read it, the verdict seems more mixed than “yeah, he’s awful stupid.” It reminded me, in fact, of what you sometimes hear about FDR. It’s not that he was dumb, he was just … smart in a different way:

Presidential historian Richard Norton Smith, who is a scholar-in-residence in history and public policy at George Mason University, disagrees.

“I don’t think there is a direct correlation between success in the classroom as tested by a grade book and success in the Oval Office,” he told TheDC…

“FDR had an incredible emotional intelligence. FDR read people, not books,” Smith said. “His career in college was undistinguished, but then, frankly, you know, there were lots of ‘Gentleman’s C’s’ at Harvard in those days.”

Smith continued: “What Roosevelt demonstrated from an early age was a capacity for leadership, and that is something that dramatically accelerated with age. It wasn’t something he learned in a classroom. It is something he learned from life.”

Is there any GOP presidential candidate this year who can’t be caricatured as crazy, evil, or stupid by the left, per their time-honored tradition? Huntsman doesn’t count: Any Republican who dumps on those to his right for being fringe-y earns an automatic exemption from the crazy/evil/stupid matrix, even though he’s also to the right of liberals on the issue for which they’re celebrating him. Romney almost avoids all three but Democrats’ accusations of “weirdness” against him are really just “crazy” by another name. The only guy I can think of to whom none of those labels would stick is Pawlenty, which is precisely the reason the White House didn’t want to face him in the general. If they can’t demagogue the Republican nominee then they have to run on their record, and that’s a recipe for a landslide. (Said one Democratic strategist of Obama: “If the election were next Tuesday he’d lose. That’s how bad it is.”) It’s surreal that their campaign message might boil down to urging people to vote for President Nine-Percent Unemployment because he’s super-smart ‘n stuff, but you play the cards you’re dealt. That’s pretty much their last card.

Ah well. I’m already looking forward to Politico’s inevitable follow-up pieces, “Is Rick Perry crazy?” and “Is Rick Perry evil?”

Seems like the perfect thread to post this one then……

If Obama were as smart as a fifth-grader, he would know, of course, that “merits … have.” Were there such a thing as a literary Darwin Award, Obama could have won it on this on one sentence alone. He had vindicated Chen in his first ten words.

Michelle had to have been as anxious at Harvard Law as Bart Simpson was at Genius School. Almost assuredly, the gap between her writing and that of her highly talented colleagues marked her as an affirmative action admission, and the profs finessed her through.

Yeah, what a loss! Remember when McCain was running in the primary, and we all knew he just couldn’t possibly be branded as crazy (because he was a POW war hero and the media wouldn’t dare go there) or evil (because he was the leading opponent of enhanced interrogation) or stupid (because the media had spent 8 years treating him as a sober, respected, bipartisan elder statesman)? And then he locked up the nomination, and suddenly the media were writing articles about his uncontrollable rage and Photoshopping gore-dripping fangs onto him and and hinting that he was showing Alzheimer’s symptoms? Yeah, those were some good times. I sure hope we nominate another candidate just like McCain who can’t be possibly be demagogued by the media!

Pawlenty would’ve been an uncharismatic gift to this WH and they’d have loved to face him – and they’d have NO problem demagoguing him come election time. Seriously, do you believe what you wrote? The left loved McCain and treated him well – right up until he got the nomination, and then… the demagoguing and characterization began.

On the other hand, they let thousands of dumb people graduate from college with degrees in partying and hooking up. Without seeing his grades, I don’t know if Obama was one of those, but my guess from his performance so far is that he was.

VFW Accuses White House of Snubbing Annual Convention

The Veterans of Foreign Wars convention this week will not feature a top-tier official from the Obama administration, a breach in tradition that the group’s commander described as an “insult of the highest magnitude.”

However, an administration official claimed Monday that the White House made “every effort” to provide a speaker for the event, offering up a range of top officials.

“In all instances, the VFW declined those offers,” the official said.

The veterans group is accustomed to playing host to the nation’s most powerful people at its national conference. Obama addressed the VFW in 2009, followed by Vice President Biden in 2010.

But the 2-million strong VFW accused the administration of snubbing its members by not providing a “first-tier speaker” for the first time in VFW history”.

If he’s so super smart, then why is he still refusing to release any of his transcripts? Why did he never write a single super smart academic article in his entire career? Why does he admit that he has been a beneficiary of Affirmat*ve Act*on? People who are actually super smart don’t need AA to get into Ivy League schools (unless they’re Asian, of course, because Asians are routinely discriminated against by admissions departments). wordwarp on August 29, 2011 at 7:57 PM

I’m quibbling, but the C-130s that Perry flew — while noble and essential aircraft! — aren’t jets. They have propellers, and they go comparatively low, slow, and everywhere very reliably.

The military doesn’t let unqualified people fly propeller aircraft either, so your point isn’t affected.

Beldar on August 29, 2011 at 9:07 PM

I like where Politico talks about how Perry was the kind of pilot that would stick to his flight plan. Yeah, that’s what stupid people do, they figure out a plan to get where they want to go and avoid the hazards along the way, and then they follow it. A smart guy like Obama could just jump in the cockpit and figure out the details as he went along. Don’t you feel better knowing that you’ve got Obama running the country?

Socratease on August 29, 2011 at 9:08 PM

There’s probably an essay to be written, or that’s already been written, or that should be written — maybe by Bill Quick? — about the differences between different sorts of pilots who become politicians.

Dubya flew interceptors; his dad flew carrier-based dive bombers; and McCain also flew carrier-based strike aircraft. None of them did any dog-fighting (although Dubya’s mission would have been to use missiles to shoot down invading Soviet bombers). Nevertheless, my guess — as a fan but a non-pilot who hasn’t ever been in the military — is that they’d all still qualify for the rough, tough, and bluff fraternity of combat pilots.

The guys like Perry who flew (and still fly) the C-130s were, comparatively and metaphorically, flying truck drivers. No less essential, and indeed, a marvel and a necessary component of the long logistical train that our military forces require to accomplish their missions. But a lot less glamorous and sexy.

A Harvard socialist is dumber than any junior college dropout who understands the fundamentals of the economy. Next question.

ACK I was wrong – Obama will be here tomorrow right around lunch time.

ACK ACK ACK!

gophergirl on August 29, 2011 at 8:19 PM

Relax, Michele Bachmann closes it out. And there’s Miss America- she’s probably got more of a clue than Øbama!

There’s probably an essay to be written, or that’s already been written, or that should be written — maybe by Bill Quick? — about the differences between different sorts of pilots who become politicians.

Beldar on August 29, 2011 at 9:21 PM

Beldar- I don’t know anything about Bill Quick, but I’d read that essay if Bill Whittle wrote it!

Already read, but thanks. As a security wonk, I will continue to question any naivete I see in any candidate.

Well said, Michelle!

The vast majority of Malkin’s comments have been totally debunked. Sorry but I don’t have the all the links handy to my own research.

FYI, Pam Geller has tried to put a bunch of total b.s. on his as well. It’s rather curious that a lot of negative stuff was posted after Perry had cleaned Bachmann’s clock in Iowa and completely upstaged her straw poll “win”.

College?

Who goes to college for success?

You become successful with or without and college and with or without
good grades.

Did I go to college? Yea.

Did I have good grades.. ?

No I had a 3.96 in my first college (wanted a 4.0)

and dropped out of my 3 year of pre med at UPENN because I could not hack the calc and lack of sleep.

Am I successful? beyond imagination.

I’ve read all the pros & cons. I am not pro or anti-Perry. As I said above, my priorities are, and always have been, security issues. I will continue to question the knowledge of all candidates. Those of you who are pro-any particular candidate will gravitate toward anything that absolves your candidate from any naivete. This is one of the reasons I like Allen West. I don’t have to question his knowledge or where he stands.

Connie on August 29, 2011 at 10:47 PM

I’m quibbling, but the C-130s that Perry flew — while noble and essential aircraft! — aren’t jets. They have propellers, and they go comparatively low, slow, and everywhere very reliably.

The military doesn’t let unqualified people fly propeller aircraft either, so your point isn’t affected.

Beldar on August 29, 2011 at 9:07 PM

Well, they sort of are jets, as in jet driven propellers, also known as turboprops.

It is a small jet turbine engine driving the propellers.

4 of them.

The guys like Perry who flew (and still fly) the C-130s were, comparatively and metaphorically, flying truck drivers. No less essential, and indeed, a marvel and a necessary component of the long logistical train that our military forces require to accomplish their missions. But a lot less glamorous and sexy.

Beldar on August 29, 2011 at 9:21 PM

I don’t know about you, but this is one C-130 I find to be pretty damn awesome:

AC-130H/U

Video of the Spectre in action

I wouldn’t want to be on the business end of that baby.

25mm vulcan, 40mm Bofors, and a 105mm howitzer.

Yikes.

TPaw? You mean the guy who quit after a straw vote 5 months before the first real vote? The guy who governed MN one way — FOR Man made global warming, FOR Cap & Tax, FOR ethanol subsidies, signed legislation that would double the mandated ethanal % in MN gasoline from 10% to 20%, the guy who, along with 25 dem Goevenors (including Crist) made a 20+ minute video in an effort to pressure Bush into supporting a National Cap % Tax plan, the guy who supported Romney’s efforts towards Romneycare back in the mid 2000′s — and then, when he decided to make a run for POTUS decided that he “really” didn’t believe in Man made global warming, afterall. That he didn’t “really” want a Cap & Tax regime, afterall. That he didn’t support ethanol subsidies, afterall. That he didn’t “really” support Romneycare, afterall…That guy?

Her visceral “hatred” for rule by fiat, not for Perry…

The news was never a perfect system of information. And it was always a for-profit business.

But I never thought I’d see the day when ABC, NBC and CBS would just be propaganda arms, no longer restrained by a common morality or even fear of the law.

Uh, she was pregnant and now she’s not?

terryannonline on August 29, 2011 at 8:00 PM

Breast feeding takes a good 2500 to even 3000 Kcal per day. Maybe that’s it.

flicker on August 30, 2011 at 3:30 AM

This wouldn’t be an issue if Abraham Lincoln didn’t sign the Declaration of Independence allowing the 56 and 57 states to join the union.

Fuquay Steve on August 30, 2011 at 6:52 AM

So Rick Perry’s college transcripts have proven that he is too dumb to be a political leader? Now let’s see Obama’s transcripts, passports,SS numbers, selective service registration and military records, writings, scholarships, law clients and cases, associates in his shadowy past, all illegal family members camped out in America, his real estate transactions, his donor lists etc. While we are at it let’s expect to do the same for his czars, advisers, cabinet members, attorney general, and especially the first traveler M.Obama and family, and the dog’s travel records!Where is the Wikileaks guy when we need him to shed some light on this conspiracy to deceive?

Marco on August 30, 2011 at 8:01 AM

People who think FDR was wonderfully competent might find this video lecture interesting.

See this on affirmative action and Obama’s brain power .

And to see how corrupt Ivy League professors of business & economics can be (as Michele says, and not to mention CEOs & politicians) I recommend the remarkable documentary “Inside Job”. Yeah, I know it’s a bit left leaning but many facts are there and the interviews are telling.

Chessplayer on August 30, 2011 at 9:12 AM

Ah well. I’m already looking forward to Politico’s inevitable follow-up pieces, “Is Rick Perry crazy?” and “Is Rick Perry evil?”

Well, we know he is stupid, he’s creepy mass is proof that he’s crazy and the Gardasil debacle is proof that he’s evil in the sense that he put he’s friends interest above little girls health. Governor Gardasil is the worst mistake the GOP could make since Christine O’Donnell.

Falz on August 30, 2011 at 9:27 AM

Obama’s performance refutes the fundamental premise of Progressiveism; that the Ivy League elites, by virtue of their superior intellect, should rule.

Obama’s administration has been filled with Ivy League brainiacs, and they have botched it.

Note, I’m not even bothering to challenge their self-serving claim to superior intellect, it is enough to observe their failure.
