Video: The ugly protest at Wisconsin’s Messmer Catholic School over Walker visit

posted at 1:00 pm on August 27, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker visited Messmer Preparatory Catholic School yesterday, while the school repaired the first vandalism that had occurred at the facility in eleven years of operation.  While Walker read Dr. Seuss to the grade-school children inside, unions protested the visit and the school outside.  Want to guess which group was more well-behaved?  Actually, you don’t have to guess.  The MacIver Institute shot video of the protest and the visit and then interviewed Messmer’s President, Brother Bob Smith.  We see childishness, petulance, and bullying — and then we see Messmer’s students (via Wisconsin Reporter):

It got ugly on the street outside the facility, which is no surprise, since Messmer is a “choice school” — an alternative to the union-gripped public school system. It’s an alternative that sends 85% of its high-school graduates to college. It’s also no surprise that “choice schools” threaten the union’s power in the state, which gave them extra added incentive to protest Walker’s visit … and to attempt to intimidate Messmer staff while doing so. The video provides a jarring disconnect between the well-behaved students on the inside and Brother Bob’s explanation of teaching positive discipline and self-control to the self-indulgent nastiness taking place on the sidewalk outside.

At the 1:05 mark, a man in a “JOBS NOW” union T-shirt bumps Brother Bob in a clear attempt to intimidate him, which amusingly has no effect. At 1:48, a protester harangues another member of the staff, telling her to get out of his neighborhood; the protester appears again at 2:40 in the apparent conclusion to the incident, saying “You must be really proud of what you’ve accomplished.” Well … yeah.  They’re actually educating students rather than interfering with someone else’s attempt to do so.

The same protester appears a few seconds later demanding an explanation of why they invited Walker to tour the school and get “the attention of your students.”  Does he not know that Walker really is the governor of the state, and that’s significant enough for the students?  If that’s an example of what students get in his classroom, maybe parents of his students should call Messmer to see if there are any openings.

Finally, have unions bothered to change their protest marching cries in 40 years?  We hear the ubiquitous “hey hey ho ho” rallying cry, and a chorus of “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” last seen on the charts as recently as 41 years ago.  For the unions, it’s the same old, tired song, the same old, tired rallying cries, and the same, old, dismal failure in both public schools and public relations.  I’d call them childish, but that would insult the well-behaved and well-educated students at Messmer Prep.  Let’s just call them ugly.  This is what it looks like when those who feel entitled to power and control lose both.

One GOP senator was recalled, despite being in a fairly GOP district, because he left his wife to shack up with a twenty-something legislative intern in Madison.

He no doubt lost the middle-aged women vote, who don’t take kindly to men who dump their wives for a younger model.

Given a better GOP candidate in 2012, this seat should come back to the GOP.

Knucklehead on August 27, 2011 at 1:34 PM

Many of those protesters were teachers. The way they behaved, if they were teaching my children, I would either have them fired or I’d pull my children out of school.

They can talk about freedom of speech, and I’ll completely agree with them, but what about respect for the Governor, how about respect for the electoral process, how about respect for the school that is doing a great job with the children. That is the reason I would want them fired, not because of their speech, but because they’re teaching children and yet showing utter contempt for societal norms of civility.

Vote Republican and only be called a racist one more time.

It won’t happen until we abandon the “cult of the expert” mentality in this country. Unfortunately the vast majority of Parents have been suckered into allowing the experts (teachers) to educate their children. We see the results at all levels now of parents buying into that false belief.

chemman on August 27, 2011 at 2:15 PM

Can’t be giving Black people a ‘choice’ on where their kids are getting an education. Next thing you know, they’ll be questioning their “betters” – the politicians who pander to dysfunctional school systems.

No one questions Barry and Michelle sending their kids to private schools.

Yet the same “liberal party” wants to deny that choice to other parents.

WHY?

GarandFan on August 27, 2011 at 2:25 PM

Although the Republicans kept the majority, the Donks were successful in quite a few recalls and didn’t lose any of theirs. This aint over up there. Unions fought long and hard to get their grip on what they have with almost nothing to start with.

I know this has already been rebutted, but it really needs to be said again and again.

First, we need to remember that Wisconsin has a long and rich history of not just being left wing, but being FAR left wing. It was, in fact, the birthplace of public employee unions. Republicans winning in Wisconsin has been a very rare thing (until recently). This MUST be kept in mind.

Next, the Republicans lost only 2 seats. One of them (as has been explained) was because the Republican candidate left his wife to shack up with a 20 year old. I understand that his WIFE lead the opposition to his candidacy. And even THEN it was still very, very close.

The second one was in a majority democrat area and the loss was very much expected. Again, though, even THEN it was still very, very close.

The other thing to keep in mind here is that the Republicans just finished up re-districting the state to their advantage. I believe I’ve read somewhere that a couple of the Dems who just won their recall will be out of a job come January.

So not only was there no real gain in Democratic leadership, unions wasted tens of millions of dollars to accomplish nothing. This leads to the other point:

These thugs have quite deep pockets now. We don’t really imagine they’re going anywhere, do we?

hawkdriver on August 27, 2011 at 1:17 PM

Those deep pockets are getting pretty small and shallow.

First off, they have spent millions and millions on the protests, the Supreme Court election (and the push for the recount) and the recall elections.

All they have to show for all that money spent (which wouldn’t surprise me to total over $100 million) is two extra seats (for the time being and which isn’t enough to change anything in the legislature).

On top of that, the budget repair bill has disengaged the feeding “treadmill” of automatically taking out union dues. This has already had an effect in that the public union health care program has recently laid off 40 workers.

And don’t forget that there’s a big presidential election next year with a very, VERY vulnerable Democratic president. They need to save some of there dwindling funds for that.

And lastly, in spite of all the noise and money spent, Gov. Walker’s changes are WORKING. In fact, last month Wisconsin was responsible for HALF of the entire countries new job growth!

In other words, the noise is falling on deaf ears as people see for themselves that Gov. Walker is a success. This will keep him (and fellow Republicans) safe for some time.

Religious_Zealot on August 27, 2011 at 2:25 PM

Huh? Somebody should have called the police….bullying isn’t tolerated in schools…I thought.

tinkerthinker on August 27, 2011 at 2:31 PM

I think every single union member in California should play this video for its leadership and tell them this is exactly how we DON’T WANT YOU TO BEHAVE! This ugly behavior does more to turn people off on public employee unions than anythign else. We were having nasty demnstrations here in Los Angeles about 2 to 3 years ago and people really got angry including me (I had a run in with some teenage latinas blocking the sidewalk protesting the fact that we weren’t just handing the country over to them) I haven’t seen too many protest because I think that the unions here wised up when they saw the lack of support they got fromn the citizenry. I hope they keep the lesson.

CCRWM on August 27, 2011 at 2:35 PM

Notice how Brother Bob mentions that you have to have order before you can teach. This is what most public schools lack and most parents ignore. While I know parents are their child’s best advocate they need to stop condoning bad behavior or act like it has nothing to do with them.

Perhaps, rather than protesting the governor’s visit to this private Catholic school, the teacher’s union might have done something constructive like, say…form a study group to discover why the private Catholic school, filled with black inner-city kids sends 85% of its graduates on to university; while the public schools, with millions more tax dollars and staffed by teachers who are paid twice as much as their private school colleagues can’t even teach Johnnie to read. Deep in their gut these Wisconsin Progressives know that Walker can save their state from becoming a massive failure-joke like their deep-blue neighbor Illinois.

And that fact drives them (literally) insane.

visions on August 27, 2011 at 3:43 PM

Many years ago this type of protest was either illegal, or carried out with certain criteria. you could not parade on some ones property, you could not be loud. Unfortunately the unions took this to court and won, with the judge calling it legal because it was deemed an informational picket. This opened up so many breaches of the peace that we now see.

The unions, in most cases, hire people to protest, and at less than union scale. The violence is growing, did anyone see a law enforcement officer there? At the same token an informational picket, at oh lets say abortion clinics are deemed to be illegal. We are fighting an up hill battle, but it must be fought, and must be won, or were done.

The very next year we had a new science teacher, our loved teacher had died over the summer. What a difference. Darwin was the only case allowed, when we objected we were punished. To say the least I was very confused, because this was 3 and 4 grade I’m speaking of. It’s been down hill ever since, and we see where that has brought us.

Finally, have unions bothered to change their protest marching cries in 40 years? We hear the ubiquitous “hey hey ho ho” rallying cry, and a chorus of “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” last seen on the charts as recently as 41 years ago.

Any time Caroline Kennedy has popped up over the last decade at a libtard event, what do you hear? Sweet Caroline from 1969! The core of this bunch are graybeards. They are done, they know it, all that’s left is to change their Depends.

I would note how happy and engaging those students look. Not like the AVERAGE public school children AND TEACHERS who show up looking like slobs, slouching, rude, unkempt and with tons of attitude.

kEEP UP THE PATHETIC AND HORRIBLE BEHAVIOR UNION MEMBERS – YOU ARE HELPING LEADERS LIKE SCOTT WALKER GET ELECTED AND RE-ELECTED.

These union twerps do NOT want us to rise up against them! If they think we will continue to endure their crap, they are sadly mistaken.

We’ve got to be prepared to resist the unions and other other thugs who try to disrupt society and rule of law.

Refreshing, isn’t it? I’ll be they say the Pledge every morning, too.

We know they want someone to throw a punch but in my younger days the red head would have only gotten about 3 words out.It is obvious that the 60′s wannab’s went to Wisconsin public schools. The first hint is their trailer trash attitude.

Any teacher worth their paycheck should be ashamed of those supposed “educators”. I’m ashamed of the white people marching in that protest. Oh, yeah, and I’m ashamed of the black ones too.

Three non-Perry posts in a row. I’m disoriented.

If you go away, you will see even fewer.

How’s that?

I guess Messmer Prep kids aren’t paying any dues.
