Qaddafi child claimed dead a doctor in Tripoli?

posted at 10:10 am on August 26, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Remember the 1986 raid ordered by Ronald Reagan on Tripoli in retaliation for a terrorist attack that killed American servicemen in what was then West Germany?  Libyan dictator Moammar Qaddafi had ordered the terrorist attack, and claimed after the bombing raid that the US raid killed his adopted infant daughter, Hana.  Qaddafi put on a great show of mourning for his lost child — but according to a report this morning from the Irish Times, he needn’t have bothered:

The adopted daughter of Muammar Gadafy, whom he claimed died as an infant in the 1986 US bombing of his Tripoli compound, appears to be alive and worked as a doctor in the Libyan capital, documents discovered byThe Irish Times  indicate.

A room belonging to Hana Muammar Gadafy in the section of the Bab al-Azizia compound where the Gadafy family lived contained several documents that appear to indicate she grew up to study medicine in Tripoli and took English classes at the British Council in the Libyan capital. …

Among the items discovered by The Irish Times  yesterday are an examination paper from a Libyan university medical faculty signed “Hana Muammar Gadafy” in Arabic, and photographs of Hana including one showing her with Gadafy’s blood daughter Aisha. A British Council certificate, dated July 19th, 2007, showed that Hana Muammar Gadafy had achieved an overall A grade in an English language course there.

In February, a German newspaper obtained a copy of a document related to the freezing of Muammar Gadafy’s assets in Switzerland after Libya’s uprising began. The document listed 23 members of the Gadafy clan, including Hana, whose date of birth is given as November 11th, 1985, making her six months old at the time of the US air strike.

Well, there are two possible explanations for this apparent discrepancy.  One, Qaddafi lied about the death of his daughter as a means to garner sympathy and cast the US as an evil, infant-murdering nation.  According to the report, it didn’t work, not even at home, where Libyans doubted that Hana had been killed at all.  It certainly didn’t win Qaddafi any friends abroad, not while he conducted terrorist operations in Western nations.

The second explanation?  Qaddafi can raise people from the dead.  If so, that’s going to be a skill that will come in handy when rebels finally discover where he’s hiding.  He’d better hope that someone in his entourage has the same power, because Qaddafi himself will likely require those services in a very short period of time.

The British aren’t making assumptions that Qaddafi is still in Tripoli.  They bombed Qaddafi’s home town of Sirte today, hitting a command-and-control bunker:

British warplanes took aim at Moammar Gadhafi’s hometown of Sirte overnight and pounded a “large headquarters bunker,” the UK Defence Ministry said on Friday. …

The ministry said Tornado aircraft fired a salvo of precision-guided missiles in Sirte, east of Tripoli on the central coast. Britain is part of NATO’s mission to enforce a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for the protection of Libyan people against Gadhafi regime forces.

Tornado aircraft destroyed one of Gadhafi’s “few remaining long range surface to air missile systems, near Al Watiyah, close to the Tunisian border on Thursday, the ministry said.

The rebels are desperate for funds.  They have put in another request for the US to unfreeze Libyan assets, currently  frozen under UN sanctions.  The UN authorized an unfreezing of $1.5 billion yesterday for the rebels, but almost $100 billion remains inaccessible.

That is one mighty impressive trick, that is.

You mean he lied? EEEGAAAADSSS! Which islamic law did he break? Is it punishable by stoning…or just getting stoned?

jbh45 on August 26, 2011 at 10:17 AM

wouldn’t the irony of all ironies be that she is still working as a doctor in tripoli with all that is going on

ConservativePartyNow on August 26, 2011 at 10:19 AM

The second explanation? Qaddafi can raise people from the dead.

So that’s why Dear Liar wanted to get rid of Qaddafi — can’t abide having a second Jesus around to compete with him.

Ed, you have to admit, Libyan health care under Khadafi is flat out miraculously good. We were impressed when they kept alive the Lockerbie bomber, who was supposedly guaranteed to die within six months. Little did we know they had outdone themselves more than 20 years earlier by raising this infant girl from the dead.

I loved Reagan but back then he should have done a follow up and this problem wouldn’t be around.

Qaddafi lied, Hana didn’t die. Wow color me shocked! The PLO copied Qaddafi’s little trick.

Wouldn’t put it past the dirty little tyrant. Why we absolved him of responsibilities from any of his actions years ago is beyond me. Good riddance, rat.

I’m glad she didn’t die, and good for her for doing something useful with her life. It probably hasn’t been easy for her, having such a loon for a dad.

She should move to Chicago where she could vote, too.

According to islamic law, lying to infidels is not only permitted, but encouraged. Something to think about any time we negotiate with these savages.

Honestly though, teke, if Bush would have taken care of these hurricane thingies before he left office, The One wouldn’t have to deal with it. He obviously inherited this hurricane.

teke184 on August 26, 2011 at 10:37 AM

Well, he should. Bush and Cheney no doubt took the Hurricane Machine with them when they left office and again are sending a hurricane right at the blue cities of DC, NY, Boston, etc.

TXUS on August 26, 2011 at 10:56 AM

So all countries supporting this mission are clearly exceeding the UN Security Resolution.

Yes. It turns out that the moral duty to protect civilians from harm, a.k.a. the “responsibility to protect,” is a transparent cover for overthrowing foreign regimes.

Why not a peep from anyone?

Because this war has across-the-board bipartisan support. Liberals, leftists and conservatives – European and American – have willed it.

Former USA Today reporter Barbara Slavin, who was in Libya at the time, set the record straight. “His adopted daughter was not killed,” she told me. “An infant girl was killed. I actually saw her body. She was adopted posthumously by Gadhafi. She was not related to Gadhafi.”

On Monday night, CBS Evening News correspondent Mark Phillips said that Reagan’s raid on Libya “killed about 60 people, including Gaddafi’s 15-month-old adopted daughter.”

Time magazine claimed Reagan’s strike “killed 41 people including Gaddafi’s adopted daughter.”

ABC News claimed the victim was his “adopted baby daughter.”

Eh- non-problem, Doc. Not only is she just a bit player, you can pretty well bet Reagan knew about the lie 15 minutes after K-Daffy uttered it.

President Reagan was slandered mercilessly as a cold-blooded killer by Leftists in Western media over Kaddafi’s human-shield hoax.

Will any of these Marxist smear-mongers issue retractions and apologies now that this fraud has been exposed?

*Buehler? …Buehler?*

FLASHBACK 2009: Kaddafi celebrated 40 years of tyranny– by shaking his hoax victim’s corpse at America;

Muammar Gaddafi hits out on 40th anniversary of Libyan coup

Col Gaddafi dedicated the first spectacular mass performance of a week of celebration to his adopted daughter Hannah, who was killed in an American air raid on Tripoli in 1986. The events appear designed to inflame tensions with America and Britain, after several years of steadily improving relations.

Year after year, the Reagan-Thatcher hating mainstream media continued to uncritically repeat Kaddafi’s propaganda lie. This coward habitually surrounded himself with Libyan children to deter attacks. Even had Hana perished during El Dorado Canyon, her death (like so many others) remains on Kaddafi’s hands.
