Peggy Noonan: Is Rick Perry too macho?

posted at 9:57 pm on August 25, 2011 by Allahpundit

I can’t shake the feeling that this column might not be well received by the base.

She’s referring, of course, to his comments about Bernanke’s near-treason and offhand musings about secession:

Mr. Perry’s primary virtue for the Republican base is that he means it. He comes across as a natural conservative, Texas Division, who won’t be changing his mind about his basic premises any time soon. His professed views don’t seem to be an outfit he can put on and take off at will. In this of course he’s the anti-Romney. Unlike Ms. Bachmann, he has executive experience, three terms as governor of a state with 25 million people.

His primary flaw appears to be a chesty, quick-draw machismo that might be right for an angry base but wrong for an antsy country. Americans want a president who feels their anger without himself walking around enraged

[T]he nation is roiling and restive. After Mr. Obama was elected, the right became angry, feisty, and created a new and needed party, the tea party. The right was on fire. The next time a Republican wins, and that could be next year, it will be the left that shows real anger, with unemployment high and no jobs available and government spending and services likely to be cut. The left will be on fire. The only thing leashing them now is the fact of Mr. Obama.

So there will be plenty of new angers out there. It probably won’t be helpful if the next president is someone likely to add to the drama with a hot temperament or carelessness.

I’ve never had the sense that Perry is “walking around enraged.” I do think he sometimes gets too cute in trying to project the John Wayne vibe that he’s got going. The Bernanke crap seemed to me to be his way of winking at “frontier justice” and the secession nonsense was basically a tin-eared riff on “don’t mess with Texas.” Noonan seems to believe he can’t control himself when he says these things but I think it’s more calculated — not planned in advance but willingly indulged in when he senses a rhetorical moment developing organically that’ll help polish his image as a steely, plain-spoken southerner. He knows what he’s doing; you don’t get elected governor of Texas three times without being a savvy retail politician. And while it’s true that “Texas style” might not translate well everywhere nationally, how serious a liability is that really? TNR argued yesterday, quite reasonably, that Perry is an almost perfect synthesis of every quality the left despises. That won’t change even if he never makes another “tough guy” gaffe, so prepare for seething, hysterical, pants-crapping rage from liberals if Perry gets elected no matter how circumspect he is about his language. And as for centrists who might be squeamish at the thought of electing a Rooster Cogburn type to the presidency, all Perry need do is utter a single word: “Jobs.” That’s his get-out-of-jail-free card for basically everything, and the worse the economy gets, the more useful it’ll be.

Which is not to say there won’t be more criticism in the same vein as Noonan’s. Another op-ed out today by an Iraq War vet warned Perry not to presume to speak for the military when criticizing Obama. Semi-related: Here’s Jeb Bush on Cavuto a few days ago. Was his point about not ascribing bad motives to The One an allusion to this? Remember, the Bush camp and the Perry camp aren’t on the same side. Yet.

Considering the current SCOAMF makes Spongebob Squarepants look like Conan the Barbarian, I can see how Noonan would be intimated by an alpha male like Perry.

Reason Number #10006 why I don’t give a rip what establishment rino/liberal twits think.

RobertE on August 26, 2011 at 1:19 PM

Haha, yeah, I sometimes think New York, Chicago, San Francisco and likely Los Angeles ought to be covered in giant domes to keep the rest of the nation’s air and minds clear from their urban-absurdity.

Lourdes on August 26, 2011 at 2:13 PM

I am so ^&*(*&% tired of everyone being all nicey-kissy. I WANT an Alpha personality to go out there and kick Zero’s azz…politically-speaking.

annoyinglittletwerp on August 25, 2011 at 10:01 PM

Sums things up nicely from my perspective, too.

Lourdes on August 26, 2011 at 2:14 PM

And to think, Piggy was a speech writer for Reagan. *gag*

predator on August 25, 2011 at 10:22 PM

Peggy is a wonderful speech writer. She really sucks as an analyst.

cartooner on August 25, 2011 at 10:20 PM

‘What I saw at The Revolution’ was a great read-unfortunately she seems to have OD’d on idiot pills.

annoyinglittletwerp on August 25, 2011 at 10:23 PM

Noonan is a prime example of talented individual who seized a trend and used it very well, but, like many who follow trends and use them, she hasn’t managed to capture anything else, meaning, she’s stuck in time, in that trendy-time that has now become her rut.

She’d still be considered fabulous if everything had frozen in time since, say, 1985 or so.

Lourdes on August 26, 2011 at 2:24 PM

I don’t know about her, but I like men to be men.

I very much like that.

Conservatives : Is Peggy Noonan too establishment?

FIFY AP!

Fuquay Steve on August 26, 2011 at 3:07 PM

I am tired of squishy men running for office. When Obama shoots a basketball it make me cringe. Don’t like the limp wristed look.

What did Noonan consider Ronald Reagan? Boots, cowboy hat, loved to ride horses on his ranch — sounds like a macho guy when he went to Berlin and told the Soviets to tear down the wall.

Give me macho any day of the week over a prima donna who thinks he is owed everything.

Noonan has lost it over the years and hard to believe she was ever Reagan’s speechwriter — east coast/inside the beltway is affecting her thinking to prefer the kumbyya types. UGH!

PhiKapMom on August 26, 2011 at 3:30 PM

What did Noonan consider Ronald Reagan?

Answer here:
Thanks From a Grateful Country
(For a man who changed the world, Ronald Reagan sure was modest.)

Boots, cowboy hat, loved to ride horses on his ranch

I think she’s addressing the need for both style and substance.

Everybody should scroll about halfway down this page here to see some truly hilarious pictures of Obama. I especially like the one where he looks as though he’s going jump into Moochelle’s lap. Perry should send out those picture of him with a puppy……awwwww, big softy. Especially good that he killed a coyote for it.

Fortunata on August 26, 2011 at 3:52 PM

I would never cast a vote for Perry based only on the fact that he is macho.

However, I consider men that have manly qualities to be at an advantage when I select my president over those that are more effeminate or refined (where refined is used as a substitution for effeminate).

JadeNYU on August 26, 2011 at 3:54 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!

OMG! I can’t stop laughing. My stomach hurts. Nooooooo, the guy who supported Al Gore, ACORN and big spending won’t change. If I take that quote at its word, then Perry still supports those same things. Can’t argue there.

MrX on August 26, 2011 at 4:37 PM

He’s only too macho in Noonan’s obama-loving mind.

While Noonan was writing speeches for President Reagan, Perry was working to have Al Gore elected as the next President.

whatcat on August 26, 2011 at 5:22 PM

Yeah, I think Peggy should stop worrying.

Obama makes Michelle Bachmann look macho [and I mean that in the nicest way!].

Obama is an effete; the American people don’t want that in their leader.

Yes, Perry could blow it on a comment, so he should restrain himself until he’s got the nomination, and until he’s well assured of strong support in the general, certainly. But give me a break: Is Perry Too Macho? Not for me, and I don’t live in Texas. But I DO have a carry license, and we DO believe in the 2nd Amendment.

But we ALSO believe that Ben Bernanke’s monetarization of the debt is “almost treasonous.”

So, there ya go.

Yes, Perry should offer substance as well as style. But let’s be honest here. This country is in dire straits. We’re going to be struggling to dig ourselves out of this fiscal hole for a very long time to come. NOBODY has the quick fix for this, even Perry. He really ought to point that out to voters; I think voters are MORE than ready for a dose of honest truth-talkin’, good old texas-style forthrightness.

Recently the San Francisco Federal Reserve Board released a study [18] on the aging “Baby Boom” population and the effects of the demographic pull on stock valuations as these “boomers” move en mass into retirement.

From the report: “The baby boom generation born between 1946 and 1964 has had a large impact on the U.S. economy and will continue to do so as baby boomers gradually phase from work into retirement over the next two decades. To finance retirement, they are likely to sell off acquired assets, especially risky equities. A looming concern is that this massive sell-off might depress equity values.” [The report isn't long and a good read.]

This is something that we have discussed previously, however, the report points out the obvious concern; “Many baby boomers have already diversified their asset portfolios in preparation for retirement. Still, it is disconcerting that the retirement of the baby boom generation, which has long been expected to place downward pressure on U.S. equity values, is beginning in earnest just as the stock market is recovering from the recent financial crisis, potentially slowing down the pace of that recovery.”

There were several very interesting implications in the report such as:

US equity values (in terms of P/E ratios) have been closely tied to demographic trends over the last 50 years. The baby boom generation has had a large impact on the U.S. economy as they saved and invested; now they will have the reverse effect as they become net liquidators of assets – particularly risk related assets (ie. stocks).

These demographic shifts may present headwinds for the stock markets recovery from the financial crisis Due to these demands on assets “real stock prices” may not recover to their 2010 level until 2027.

I don’t see that happening, it’s in Perry’s DNA. Look how he handles a students question. LOL…the guy is a macho jerk deep down. How many guys here like to be poked in the chest and shut down for asking a question of a presidential candidate.

sheryl on August 26, 2011 at 12:10 AM

He was shut down because he would not shut up & let Perry answer the question. On top of that he showed no respect for Governor Perry, who if nothing else, deserves at least that.

All candidates deal with people like this, and in my opinion they look a lot more presidential when they just move on, in lieu of arguing with someone who’s mind they’re never going to change, that is hellbent on making them look bad.

Lastly, what do you know about Gov. Perry’s DNA? Are you a geneticist?

Susanboo on August 26, 2011 at 6:51 PM

Ah shut the hell up, Peg!

NOBODY cares what you think anymore.

Except maybe Allahpundit.

She your mom or somethin’ AP? That why you still link her?

Americans want a president who feels their anger without himself walking around enraged…

That’s funny considering one of the complaints about Obama is he doesn’t get mad.

mizflame98 on August 26, 2011 at 8:58 PM

Rick Perry isn’t too macho. If he was, he wouldn’t have allowed Bill White to build the dem base in Houston when he let the Louisiana rednecks offload their welfare class on Houston after Katrina. That event changed West Houston forever. We are NOLA LITE now. Some of the most worthless homo sapiens in existence are now my forced neighbors. My children’s education was damaged by this as well as the type of neighborhood we previously enjoyed. I don’t have a problem with race. I have a problem with trash. Perry and White trashed my neighborhood and changed the destiny for my family and for this they can both GO TO HELL.
