Obama team to Texas Democrats: It’s time to start attacking Rick Perry

posted at 8:45 pm on August 24, 2011 by Allahpundit

Forget today’s Gallup poll. If you want a solid sign that Perry’s achieved at least parity with Romney, here it is.

“Your feedback will help hold him accountable on the campaign trail, inspire fellow Texans to get involved, and introduce his record — his actual record — to voters across the country,” Hector Nieto, the campaign’s Texas director, told Texas supporters by email blast today. “Your words will remind him that even as he runs, he won’t be able to hide — a lesson he apparently hadn’t learned as recently as last week. That’s when his campaign explained that the positions he took in the book he wrote just nine months ago, like saying that Social Security is unconstitutional and `a crumbling monument to the failure of the New Deal,’ no longer represent his views.

“But what other Americans are just starting to learn about — and, frankly, reject — Texans have dealt with for more than a decade. It’s up to us to make sure he doesn’t get to run away from the truth.”

Nieto’s email says hundreds of Texans have already shared their dim views on Perry, directing critics to an online form where they can suggest their own favorite “failed policies” for which he should be held accountable.

Yes, they really do have an online form just for this on Obama’s campaign site. I’m intrigued by the fact that they’re not content to rely on standard oppo research in this case but want man-on-the-street grumbling from Texas liberals instead. Is that because they’re deeply (and understandably) worried about voters being dazzled by Texas’s record on jobs and think that only “eyewitness testimony” from the locals disputing it will be effective? Or is it because Perry has a huge, obvious populist advantage over President Spock such that only fellow salt-of-the-earth southerners might be able to counter it? The “Rick Perry is the liberal antichrist” message will only go so far; to reach undecided voters, they need to start casting doubt on his heartland authenticity too. Rank-and-file Texas Democrats can help.

Speaking of cultural contrasts, here’s a photo that was tweeted today by David Limbaugh. It’s clever, but (a) there’s already an obvious liberal counterattack and (b) it’s easier to get traction with the “noble serviceman versus slacker dandy” comparison if the slacker dandy in question didn’t give the order to shoot Osama Bin Laden in the face.

The problem for the Dems is what potentially hurts Perry the most in the primary is the stuff he did in ’07 that they would have the least problem with; the things they think Perry’s doing that’s terrible conservatives like and given the current state and trend of the economy, moderate swing voters aren’t going to think is a deal-breaker if it comes down to Rick-vs.-Barack next November.

(What Team Obama really wants Texas Democrats to dig up is the same thing Ron Paul supporter Robert Morrow was looking for when he took out the ad last week in the Austin Chronicle — someone to vouch for Perry cheating on his wife and/or some sort of gay sex allegation. It’s going to be a really ugly 14 1/2 months.)

jon1979 on August 24, 2011 at 9:28 PM

Don’t worry, if I know my Democrats right, they’ll be able to find a number of people of all kinds who say they’ve slept with Perry. And given his reputation, I’d expect a parade of them. He reminds me of Slick Willy rather than Dubya in that regard.

promachus on August 24, 2011 at 9:21 PM

..this will be interesting. If they discredit Perry that means they are more afraid of Romney. Otherwise they’d hold all their ammo for the general election. You know, the last four weeks or the last four days if it’s close.

As a Palin supporter since Aug of ’08, I can disagree. I didn’t like it then, and as a Perry supporter (since he is running) now, I don’t like it now.
It gets old. We are all on the same team, e.g., against Obama. I wish we could all not attack one another and each one’s preferred candidates. Out of the entire GOP field, Huntsman is the only one I feel comfortable attacking. Besides Pawlenty, but he is gone.

if the slacker dandy in question didn’t give the order to shoot Osama Bin Laden in the face.

That’s a bit hyperbole – since the official White House position is that they would have taken OBL prisoner had he quickly surrendered.

Also – stories I’ve seen kind of indicate the POTUS had to be “pushed” into the decision to hit OBL in the first place.

well this Mitt supporter doesn’t seem to like Perry:

http://www.rightspeak.net/2011/08/rick-perry-corruption-and-ignorance.html

Perry is brazenly corrupt. In an election, I wouldn’t break a sweat to exchange the current idiot in chief for an even dumber one who is even more corrupt.

I really don’t care that Texas is last in so many categories from education to health care to social services to wages to environmental protection. If Texans are satisfied, so be it. What I DO care about is that they are NUMBER ONE in having the most lax , corrupt politics in America…..and seem to be proud of it. Rick Perry has scammed the Texas political system for personal millions for himself and doesn’t even care if anybody knows it. Hubris is one thing. Corrupt hubris is another matter. In Texas, there are literally NO limits on the amount of money an individual can provide to a candidate. Several Texas papers have reported the following:

In 12 years, Rick Perry has harvested over $ 102 Million in personal campaign contributions. Of this ,$ 55 million has come from just 204 specific sources. These specific sources have received large contracts and personal tax breaks in return. Like the following:

* Harold Simmons……Contribution of $ 1.1 Million. Receives state tax breaks worth $ 2 billion to his company

* B.J McComb……….Contributes $ 400 K. Get’s $ 25 Million in state tax subsidies to his company

* Joe Sanderson…….Contributes $ 165 K. Get’s $ 500 K for his chicken hatchery and processing plant

There are 201 other specific examples to ferret out. These folks are usually paid off through Perry sponsored funds which allocate state tax dollars to ” Amigos of Rick “.

While this is going on, Perry makes a million dollars on his salary of $ 100 K annually, lives off the people of Texas for free and screws his church with charity donations of up to $ 90 annually.

ouch only $90 to his church? that can’t be right. anyone know if any of this is true?

.

She also raised the city sales tax by half of a percent in order to build a popular sports complex and put more money into public safety. Mayor Palin also effectively used the system of congressional earmarks, collecting $26.9 million in such funding, according the independent watchdog group Taxpayers for Common Sense.

Palin ran her first statewide campaign in 2002 in a bid for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, but lost by fewer than 2,000 votes. Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski appointed Sarah Palin to chair the state’s Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in 2003. She >>>>resigned <<<< a year later in protest over what she perceived to be the "lack of ethics" of fellow Alaskan Republican leaders, including Republican Party Chair Randy Ruedrich.

Hmm a tax raising, earmark loving quitter. Huh in regards to resigning I see a trend. Does anyone think being President would not surround her with more stress, more people out to get her, and more chances for corruption. Her history says she would walk.

Due to income generated by a 2% sales tax that was enacted prior to her election, Palin was able to cut property taxes by 75% and to eliminate personal property and business inventory taxes.[

Oh look! It’s my creepy friend who lacks reading comprehension and has creative editing skills.

I’m still not going to pay for that space in your head that I seem to occupy.

I think I’ll call you “my liberal friend, CW”, because you so take after them.

Unseen so she did not raise the sales tax to build the sports complex?

CW on August 24, 2011 at 9:46 PM

(What Team Obama really wants Texas Democrats to dig up is the same thing Ron Paul supporter Robert Morrow was looking for when he took out the ad last week in the Austin Chronicle — someone to vouch for Perry cheating on his wife and/or some sort of gay sex allegation. It’s going to be a really ugly 14 1/2 months.)

jon1979 on August 24, 2011 at 9:28 PM

Of course that’s what they want, but considering how unvetted Obama remains, that’s a risky strategery. The skeletons in Barry’s closet no one would touch in 2008 won’t be so untouchable now that he’s a failed leader rather than the coming messiah.

Rational Thought on August 24, 2011 at 9:47 PM

Wait a minute? Did Perry just say that the economic crisis is a punishment from God? What? Heck, he’s rapidly approaching Jerry Falwell/ Pat Robertson territory.

CW on August 24, 2011 at 9:46 PM

no. which part of the post did you have problems with. the voters voted the sales tax in. I think it passed by 1 or 2 votes. the sales tax was done away with when the complex was paid off.

CW on August 24, 2011 at 9:50 PM

The increase was approved by voter referendum to pay for construction of a multiuse sports complex. Due to the economic growth in the community, Keller said, Wasilla is going to be able to stop charging that extra 0.5 percent sales tax two years earlier than anticipated
