Congressional Republicans to Perry: Tone it down

posted at 7:38 pm on August 19, 2011 by Allahpundit

C’mon. His cowboy image is half the reason the base is excited about him. And surely the dreaded GOP establishment on the Hill understands that they’re only doing him a favor with the base by trying to shush him. If you thought yesterday’s quasi-endorsement of Perry by Obama’s team was campaign gold, imagine what it’ll do for him once word gets out that those darned RINOs on the Beltway cocktail-party circuit wish he would go easy on the rhetoric. They’re throwing him in the briar patch here and they must know it.

“You can’t be calling Bernanke a traitor and you can’t be questioning whether or not Barack Obama loves America, that type of thing,” said Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and veteran Long Island incumbent. “I’ve been with Perry a few times, and I can see how he could project, again, if it’s done the right way. But no, if he continues this, he’ll have a tough time.”…

Peter Roskam (R-Ill.), the Chief Deputy Whip and an emerging political powerhouse in suburban Chicago, added of the treason reference: “That’s not something you want to lead with if you’re trying to get independents to come your way. I would imagine that he’s thinking through his strategy.”…

“This is a very critical period for Perry,” said Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), a former National Republican Congressional Committee chairman and longtime political strategist. “He’s got to prove he won’t self-destruct. There is only one race like the presidency and that’s the presidency. He’s been playing Triple-A ball until now.”…

“He is not my type, but I suspect I have a lot of constituents who will like him,” said one moderate Midwestern Republican of Perry. “And in spite of the fact that I do not agree with him on numerous issues, I suspect he’d be better than Michele [Bachmann].”

One of the many fun aspects of a Perry/Palin/Bachmann race in Iowa will be the competition among them to see who can talk the toughest about Obama and the Fed. Someone has to win the “authenticity” primary and there are only so many ways to do that via the relatively small policy disagreements that exist between them. Palin’s the most blue-collar (although Perry will challenge her on that), Perry’s the most southern/small-town/rural (although Palin will challenge him on that), and Bachmann’s the most ardently socially conservative. Who wins that game of rock/paper/scissors when you’re playing with an electorate like Iowa’s?

Via Think Progress, here’s Palin on Perry’s Bernanke comments.

Oh, and there’s nothing inaccurate about my statement that Perry grew up poorer than any of the other candidates and the fact that he now is supported by “rich” backers (did you forget to call them “evil”?) is the epitome of the American Dream.

“He is not my type, but I suspect I have a lot of constituents who will like him,” said one moderate Midwestern Republican of Perry.

What a purr-fect illustration of the thinly veiled contempt these inside-the-beltway establishment Republicans have for Americans. That quote is just dripping with condescension — he means he has some “hicks” among his “constituents,” who simply are not sophisticated enough to understand why Perry isn’t his “type.” I can just see this little fella’s pinky swinging in the air as he holds his wine glass in his white, pasty, callous-free, never-worked-a-day-in-his-life hands.

The best thing that Perry (or Palin) could do is to take any one of the idiotic remarks or claims that Obama made during his “listening tour on the magic bus” and mock them mercilessly. Expose the lies and the empty rhetoric for what it is.

Same here, he was always the lesser of the evils. However, he is who he is. You can take the guy/girl out of Texas but you can’t take the Texas out of the guy/girl. If he tones it down too much, he won’t be Rick Perry.

TxAnn56 on August 19, 2011 at 8:56 PM

Whats interesting is that Perry did not call Bernanke a traitor or question Obama’s love for country. He said that Bernake printing more money would almost amount to a treasonous act in this crisis we are in. He also simply declined to answer for Obama when a question was posed. Its the LSM narrative and talking points that are pushing these stories to make Perry look like someone a little bit out of control. And the establishment pubs play right into it.

jazzmo on August 19, 2011 at 8:01 PM

The select lawmakers either don’t know what he said about Bernanke or would like to pretend he said something different than he did. Sounds like it’s half and half in this piece. Then you have people like Senator Cornyn, who have other reasons for criticizing Perry.

Hey, SagebrushPuppet, speaking of John Kerry: Take a look at this excerpt of what Mario Loyala had to say about him in a squib about Syria at NRO’s “The Corner”.

Perhaps the explanation for Obama’s approach to Syria is that Sen. John Kerry got involved, thereby drastically lowering the average intelligence of whatever group of advisers was formulating the policy. This explanation is more convincing than the coward theory. We know that Kerry worked hard to stay the administration’s hand on Syria for months: He had spent the previous two years making secret trips to Damascus for weekend stays at Assad’s palace. Apparently the wives get along famously — and Assad himself was really nice and genuinely interested in being friends with America, if we could only earn his trust.

As Kerry explained in one interview, “There was an opportunity staring us in the face on foreign affairs.” Assad is a secular guy who’s worried about the rise of religious fundamentalism in his country (Kerry can certainly empathize there). He’s not religious at all, so he has no interest in being allied with Iran, and did so only when he was forced into it — first by the menace from Saddam Hussein, then by the menace from George W. Bush. And now both of them are gone.

Hence the opportunity the Kerry imagined was “staring us in the face”; Assad’s a doctor for chrissakes, so why would he willingly chose to be a terrorist? (By the way, even if you already think John Kerry is the dumbest person in Washington, you will be amazed by his involvement with Syria; please read this classic Wall Street Journal story from early June.) That explains a lot, but even if Kerry could succeed in talking the White House into embracing such a crazy position, that can’t explain why the president held onto it for as long as he did, with people getting killed by the hundreds in brutal military repression in cities across Syria.

I agree. There have been RINOS in the House & Senate. The Tea Party, Sen Jim DeMint and Sarah Palin helped bring in the Conservatives with the last election. But there is still more work to do.

Like a garden that weeding isn’t kept up; takes more effort:-)

She’s good conservative-but if she wanted to run for president…leaving the governorship probably wasn’t the best idea.
It’s going to be an issue if she runs-as it should be.

annoyinglittletwerp on August 19, 2011 at 10:14 PM

All of it is toxic. And a Perry vs Obama race will create an even more toxic environment. I hope it doesn’t happen.

sheryl on August 19, 2011 at 9:31 PM

It’s ok that you don’t like Gov. Perry. We don’t want Gov. Perry to be quiet and we don’t want Sarah Palin to be quiet. That has been the problem for far too long.

I, for one haven’t heard anything “toxic”, just plain truth from SP & RP.

bluefox on August 19, 2011 at 10:25 PM

Karl Rove is the Romney camp for those who don’t know — he had Romney support Kay Bailey for Bush 41 in 2010 Governor’s primary in Texas. Bush 41 has been pushing Romney for a long time and anything Rove can do to take out Perry is for Romney.

Bush 41 tried to get Perry’s consultant to go over to Kay Bailey but that failed.

IBD had a very editorial on what Rove is up yesterday and the Daily Beast the day before. The basic word is that Bush 41 doesn’t like Perry as he is not an Ivy League elite but horror of horrors graduated from A&M — funny how Bush 41 put his library there but has been trashing an A&M grad.

Have had it with the elitist and this is our chance to get rid of the group that has been trying to pull strings to get their candidates in office since Nixon days. They tried with Reagan but it didn’t work. All these stories of candidates getting in the race probably started with Crossroads Rove’s outfit. Do they see the money drying up now?

Go to your local post office to see the cards that the USPS is promoting for 9/11.

Thanks, I’ll check on that. I’m still wanting to know on the Patriots Day. Perhaps it was a Resolution and had to be renewed.

I don’t “celebrate” or do “service” on that day. I reflect and pray and give thanks for the responders and all that were involved. Those that gave their lives; Doctors and Nurses and those that helped each other. And I will call it Patriot Day, in rememberance of them.

(Maybe I shouldn’t go to the P.O.)

AMEN – we’ve been the nice ones for far too long. We played by the rules and did the “right” thing and what did it get us – Obama and the attempted destruction of our country and way of life.

I LOVE that Rick Perry doesn’t apologize for who he is, what he says and how he says it. Same goes for Sarah Palin.

For the first time – we are the ones that are rocking the boat, we are the ones that aren’t being quiet and being PC.

I have to admit – I very much like it :)

Karl Rove, that dutiful Jeeves of the Bush family, has joined in the loyalist chorus to have someone — just anyone — run against Rick Perry in the primary, so to get Jeb Bush on the ticket as VP in 2012 and have him advance in 2016.

This comes from The Hill at http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/presidential-campaign/177565-rove-joins-the-bush-anti-perry-campaign

The only thing I would disagree with is that Rove has been doing this from day one for Bush 41 but now they are saying it is to get Jeb as VP, probably lose, and run in 2016. Do you all want another Bush? Not me!

Anyway about Perry – what’s the over/under on the MSM making a full frontal assualt on Perry as a racist? That’s all they have left to attack him with.

batterup on August 19, 2011 at 10:51 PM

If you really want to reduce and limit government you have to have carefully thought about a plan for getting there.

Perry doesn’t strike me as someone who really has a good idea of how to get there, even if he really want to do that. Is there enough water in that river to float a real boat?

Cool!! You know I am so sick and tired of our Reps & Senators almost NEVER speaking for us. All of this crap(excuse my language) that has been passed was because we don’t have anyone speaking for US!

When I call the House or Senate, I tell the Staff person, I’m ready to vote and I’m voting NO on whatever is up for a vote. LOL

I really don’t want Gov. Perry or Sarah Palin to shut up at all. They are the only ones that are drawing the fire. That’s what happens when you speak truth to power. Well, actually, Truth to Liars.

Always; What I would wear, who I could rub elbows with, and the menu, of course. It is an obsession with me, I guess./

Perry: Tone it up.

Sort of funny that link says Rove joins the Bush…I didn’t know he ever left:-)

So then their plan is to get Romney in and Jeb Bush as VP in 2012?
Sounds like it to me. I know they want Ryan in. Boehner, etc.(Hotair had a thread on it)

We’ll see what happens.

Really? Sounds exactly how an Elitist would think about. Actually, that’s why they are so silent and don’t look out for the American people. They are so afraid of losing all of what you’ve stated.

I am so thankful that Gov. Perry and Gov. Palin think about us, the Amercian people and our Country.

This could have been done if the House had held the line with CCB.
It would have cut spending and balanced the budget and prevented the AAA downgrade. Alas, the House gave in and passed what Obama and the Senate wanted….

Won’t happen. We’ve got life-time senators, who merely get re-elected through name recognition. Most people go to the polls with a valiant idea on who to vote for, whoever is in the forefront. Then, they are subjected to a series of names for congressmen, judges, water and power positions, dog-catcher. Don’t know where to go, will trust “any name in the news”. You think I’m wrong. Go out in the street of any city and ask, who is the Vice-president, who is the Speaker of the House, who is the Senate Majority leader, who is the Senate Minority Leader. Good luck.
