Change: Obama’s job approval now at … 39%

posted at 4:00 pm on August 14, 2011 by Allahpundit

Alternate headline: “Blogger can’t believe Obama’s job approval still as high as 39%.” Entrenched economic despair, chaos on Wall Street, the S&P downgrade, and Democratic disgruntlement over the debt-ceiling deal, yet somehow only now for the first time is he in the outskirts of Bushville with sub-40% approval. The way we’re going, I half-expect the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man to show up tomorrow in Manhattan — and even that probably wouldn’t bump The One down below 35%. Even so, notes Philip Klein, “No president since Harry Truman has been reelected with approval ratings this low, this late into his first term.” Hmmmm.

There’s no partisan breakdown at Gallup but my hunch is that heart-achy Democrats are driving this. Corroborating evidence from CNN:

Seven in 10 Democrats say they’d like to see Obama as their party’s presidential nominee next year.

That figure may seem promising, but support for Obama’s re-nomination has fallen 11 percentage points since June.

Despite the decline, history is on Obama’s side. “In 1994, only 57% of Democrats wanted the party to renominate Bill Clinton, and he went on to win the nomination and a second term two years later,” said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

His previous low among Dems on that question was 73% right before the midterms last year. More corroborating evidence: The Times and the AP each have stories out today about Obama launching a messaging offensive against the GOP, especially on the economy, which will firm up support among his base even if it doesn’t do jack to create new jobs. Watch his weekly message below for a taste; it’s a rehash of his speech in Michigan a few days ago questioning the patriotism of certain nefarious unnamed characters in Congress who he claims are putting partisan aims ahead of the country’s welfare. Luckily for us, The One would never let electoral goals dictate hard policy choices.

Fun fact: While news of the new Gallup numbers was breaking this morning, lifelike talking-points robot Debbie Wasserman-Schultz was on CBS insisting that Obama’s in “remarkably good shape” politically. No foolin’.

I’m LMAOROTF! listening to the Democratic spin this morning. Somewhere George Orwell is also laughing. It’s Newspeak in progress. So when will the ‘grassroots’ rise up demanding The Obamassiah be re-elected?

You’ll note that NOWHERE is Barry running ON IS HIS RECORD.

The only decent candidate in the 2008 election was Palin. Voting for McCain would have been only slightly less of a mistake than Barry O.

I voted for Palin, hoping that she would be able to mitigate his RINO tendencies a little. Instead, we got O with his full-blown Socialism, but maybe, finally, public awareness is catching up to what most of us knew about him from the first.

It won’t stay at 39%, but I figure it will come back to it a few times. Dare I hope that it will go lower?

hachiban on August 14, 2011 at 5:33 PM

At the same time in his first term, Bush was just over 50%.

Change, indeed.

MadisonConservative on August 14, 2011 at 4:21 PM

Actually Bush was in the same point in his first term as O’bama in August of 2003-that’s when he had been in office 2 1/2 years +/-.

Gallup says on August 6 2003 Bush was at 60%.

Del Dolemonte on August 14, 2011 at 5:33 PM

60 approve in CT? Good effing lord.

angryed on August 14, 2011 at 5:07 PM

Sad, isn’t it? But then again, CT didn’t elect a single republican to national office in 2010 so it isn’t unexpected. We make Massachusetts look conservative. Too many here have been indoctrinated, whether they be from the entitlement class, High-End-SUV driving soccer mom class, or the establishment class. As Michael Savage says, “liberalism is a mental disorder”.

CTSherman on August 14, 2011 at 5:36 PM

I say his floor is 35%. His major problem is that blue collar, union dems are completely disillusioned with him. Here in Duluth you can definitely feel the support for Obama dropping off a cliff, and this is a solidly liberal town. The Twin Cities may carry Minnesota for him, but he’s going to be really hurting in other rust belt states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ohio where his blue collar support will be a fraction of what it was in 08. He’s even going to have to fight for Michigan.

carbon_footprint on August 14, 2011 at 5:04 PM

That decision (after waiting 16 hours) to give the OK for the SEALS to take out OBL is the only positive accomplishment of his entire pResidency.

But other than a temporary uptick in his Job Approval, which quickly disappeared, so far that deed has not done anything to make things in the US any better, so it will probably not factor in his future poll numbers.

Del Dolemonte on August 14, 2011 at 5:40 PM

I thought the same exact thing. That was the only success in his entire presidency and he almost screwed that up by waiting so long.

So I visited the in-laws this weekend here in sunny MA, home of rabid liberals. These people show an amazing ability to ignore reality. Nothing is Obama’s fault, it’s all the mean old Republican’s who refuse to negotiate.

In the past things would have gotten pretty heated but nothing surprises me out here anymore. It’s not even worth arguing with them. I mean we returned all 10 Dems Reps to the House in a landslide GOP year. This State is hopeless.

Which brings me to 2 things.

1. Scott Brown may be a RINO, but he agrees with probably 80% of what I agree with and that’s good enough for me.

2. Romney got elected by these libtards and then proceeded to work with them on our wonderful Healthcare system. Granted, it was happening with or without him, but I don’t trust him as far as I can spit.

SittingDeadRed on August 14, 2011 at 6:13 PM

Oh so I forgot my point. There are enough severely deluded people to keep him above 40%. Luckily they are mostly clustered in a few geographic areas.

Good news indeed, in terms of how his presidency is being evaluated despite the media’s gentle and beneficent treatment of his administration. Here’s to hoping it is downgraded even more. Is it possible to produce a poll where the tally is less than zero?

Obama is “in remarkably good shape” for a flunky president that, based on current crappy conditions in the country, ought to truly be chased out of town.

That Obama is still tolerated at all is a testament to the basic orderliness and respect for law of the American people.

But they are still comparing his numbers with Bush’s.

Bush had a 1 poll blip to 39% about 3 weeks after the Democrat Media went full tilt boogie to shift all of the blame to him after Hurricane Katrina, which alone is proof that the rumours of the death of said Democrat Media have been wishful hype.

But he then bounced back up to mid 40s and didn’t get below 40 for good until 1 more year of “objective” Democrat Media coverage.

15% is made up of Professors, teachers, died in the wool dems, union bosses, government workers…you look at those numbers and it is astounding. Once again, considering the unique figure that 14% would never vote against him.

Obama is toast.

Until now he’s managed to keep his personal approval rating above his approval ratings on every important issue. Now even that seems to have lagged behind, and the psychological effect of the nearest important fraction takes over. At 40 and above people naturally gravitate toward 1/2 as their reference point. Once you dip below 40, 1/3rd becomes the benchmark, and since Obama’s greatest weapon is his ability to use race shame, once people realize 6 in 10 of their neighbors or less share the same view (rather than half in each direction) they are much less inclined to give the benefit of the doubt.

The best part is, it only has to happen once. If at any point someone feels comfortable sharing their dislike of the current administration in mixed company, that administration is doomed. Especially if, like Obama, they have nothing to run on but their image.
