Newsweek keeping it classy in presidential coverage

posted at 8:45 am on August 8, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Memo to conservative women: When approached by Newsweek or Time for a cover story, always bring your own photographer.  Michelle Malkin knows a thing or two about the predilection at the news magazines for using unflattering photos on their covers, and this week’s cover of Michele Bachmann is no exception to that trend.  In this case, they’re not even being subtle, as Time did with its Ann Coulter cover a few years ago in which they distorted the perspective to give the firebrand author exaggerated length to her legs and a shrunken torso.  Newsweek perches a blank-looking Bachmann over block letters calling her “THE QUEEN OF RAGE”:

Rage?  I’ve certainly heard Bachmann talk tough about encroaching government and the avalanche of spending and debt, but in all the years I’ve known and covered Bachmann, I’ve never heard her rage at anyone.  It seems as though Newsweek has a double standard in effect for conservatives, women, and especially conservative women.  When Barack Obama told an audience in June 2008 that “if they bring a knife to a fight, we bring a gun,” did Newsweek crown him the King of Rage — or at any time in his class-warfare-based presidential campaign?  For that matter, when Debbie Wasserman-Schultz stated that Republicans wanted to reinstate Jim Crow laws, did anyone accuse her of being filled with rage?  Not exactly.

The Boss Emeritus notes that the signal has been sent and received by Newsweek/The Daily Beast to the sinistrophere:

The once-mighty Newsweek magazine-turned-Beast is apparently so proud of its Democratic Underground-pandering Michele Bachmann cover and title that its editors are promoting the photo and pushing the hashtag #QueenofRage on Twitter.

And the left-wing press is eating it up:

Gawker, predictably: “Ha ha, just kidding—they don’t call her CrazyEyes for nothing.”

The Village Voice rejoices after receiving a high-res image of the cover (and dutifully cropping Bachmann’s eyes).

They’re promoting this through a Twitter hashtag?  Yeah, that’s keeping it classy.

Conservative candidates have to learn that Newsweek, Time, and other mainstream publications won’t be their friends, or even be objective.  They plan on making news, not reporting it.  This is just one of the least subtle examples we’ll see in the next fifteen months.

Why as a conservative woman would you even agree to be on a cover like this?

Sometimes the “press” coverage just isn’t worth it.

Oh, wow.

I’ll have to check that out next time I’m at my dentist’s office.

Oh, wait.

Last time, he didn’t have any in the waiting room. Even he has canceled his subscription.

That said, you’d have to be blind not to recognize that Congresswoman Bachmann is, by any standard, a stunningly beautiful woman – and no moonbat photography can change that.

Me?

I’d frame it and put it on my office wall as a trophy.

This is why I’m sick of being told that the MFM has destroyed Palin’s viability, and we have to pick a different candidate. The moment anyone looks like they have a shot at winning who isn’t a squish, they’ll be Palinized (see also: Forded, Quayled) or Nixonated. They want us to nominate another McCain, whom they’ll wait until the general election to destroy.

The picture choice is lame, but honestly, it’s the title that is more offensive. As Ed points out, she’s never “raged” at anyone. Just more of the “nuts &/or sluts” campaign against conservative women, since they have nothing else to attack her with.

And sadly, if she chose to no longer do cover stories for hostile magazines as a result of this, far too many folks here would accuse her of “hiding” from the press.

I think Newsweek (especially) and Time are no longer mainstream. They are running on the fumes of their past, but they are no longer what they once were. If Newsweek were just starting up, would anyone consider it anything but a cross between People and the Utne Reader?

The left’s absolute hatred for women has always been a mystery to me, but I am beginning to make sense of it. Really. I sincerely think that democrats just assume women politicians are batsh!t crazy because…well, take at look at your leading democrat women politicians: Hillary Clinton, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Granny McBotox, Sheila Jackson Lee, Maxine Waters, Dianne Feinstein, Patty Murray, Barbara Boxer, Claire McCaskill, Debbie Stabenow, etc.

My God, the list just goes on and on. Their female politicians are just absolute nut cases, so they assume the GOP’s are, too. Their hatred of women like Bachmann tells us far more about their views of the women around them than it does about the GOP women they’re writing about.

If Bachmann decided to “attempt” a cover story with Newsweek then I question her decision. One should learn after the Palin-Couric debacle that this is a bad idea. It is especially a bad idea when liberals got a taste of blood from the Couric interview that they still feed on. Gee would anyone in the left-wing press want to take down a Republican Presidential candidate like that again? I also remember that it was the idiotic Handlers including Nicole Wallace who told Palin to she had to get in there and Bachmann should know better if her handlers told her she needed to play with the MSM ESPECIALLY at Newsweek! It may sound redundant but can you imagine the outrage if someone did a crazy eyes front cover about Obama? Let’s bring back the “Joker/Socialism” picture and put it on a newstand cover!

Michelle Bachmann could bring her own photogs everywhere with her, but Newsweek would always be bringing their own–and choosing the one freaky looking shot out of hundreds that they take.

And I’d hardly call her “raging.” Barack Obama’s pastor, Jeremiah Wright, has that attribute all sewed up.

Bee on August 8, 2011 at 9:26 AM

They plan on making news, not reporting it.

And this is why Time, Newsweek, and magazines of their ilk can no longer be considered to be news magazines, or even examples of journalism. Because all these can now be considered to be propaganda mouthpieces of the liberal left, not the honest news reporting outlets that they once were a very long time ago.

That Newsweek would allow itself to becoming something as low as what they have become is further proof that journalistic integrity can now only be found in few places, but most definitely not in the offices of places like the New York Times, the Boston Globe, The LA Times, the Chicago Tribune, and other MSM outlets, including Newsweek.

That is why I stopped reading Time and Newsweek eons ago. There was a time they both stood for something. Based on what we have here now, it seems both will now fall for anything.

Meh. Why be bothered by this? I’m thrilled!

First, its a universal maxim that once one side begins routinely resorting to this kind of thing, they’ve lost – and they know they’ve lost – and the voters know they’ve lost. All they’re doing is emphasizing that fact.

Second, this appeals to NOBODY except the leftist fringe that was voting for Obama, anyways. Childish, petulant, clearly and painfully biased media ALWAYS has the effect of pushing the moderates and independents away from the perpetrators.

Newsweek just swung 100,000 fence-sitters into the (R) column in 2012. I guarantee it.

Thankfully, the left – because immaturity is the most basic characteristic of liberalism – never figures this out.

Maybe – but Newsweek hasn’t been an “actual magazine” since at least the early 1990s. It’s tabloid propaganda, blatantly obvious about it, and not even very well produced.

The National Enquirer is now a more legitimate publication, and that is not hyperbole. Next time you’re at the grocery store, grab both and skim.

Neither is an “actual magazine,” but in the Enquirer you may find things that are at least entertaining. And more factual.

Not to mention how female Dems are routinely insulted for their appearance in general such as Debbie What-a-dumb Schmuck.

If I owned a lefty rag like that I’d be questioning my editors on why the hell they devoted so much free space to a GOP candidate when they should be promoting someone to primary their own. haha.

Didn’t Tina Brown of the Daily Beast take over Newsweek? Tina Brown is a staple on MSNBC. Nuff said they are afraid of Michelle Bachmann. I would love to get a look at Obama’s internal polling numbers, they must be in the toilet.

Imagery is how the Left manipulates the Mob – The Mob can’t be communicated with in any regular language. This is straight out of Coulter’s book Demonic. Phil Griffin and Tina Brown, imagine themselves Mob Bosses.

How is this rag even still alive?

Makes me wonder…the unaccounted for stimulus. Did it go towards saving these rags, in exchange for their propoganda? Naaaaaaaaaah. They’re stupid enough to do it for free.

True. All the more reason for conservatives to unite against these attacks regardless who our favored candidate is. Every last one of us would suffer similarly were we to run (although, admittedly, some of us have more fodder for media fun than others).

It’s going to get really, really ugly…and certainly wont let up if/when we win. The Bush years were merely a foretaste I’m afraid.

I guess they have to go with the big scary cover since no one will buy the entire magazine. Optics are important. And I am terribly sorry about the last line of my previous comment. I wonder if I can take proofreading lessons?

Cindy Munford on August 8, 2011 at 10:24 AM

Why do Republicans keep falling for the con-game? Bachmann is promised a cover and she naively thinks “this time I’ll win over those liberal journalists.” They all fall for it.

Republicans need to stop doing all interviews for the liberal networks, magazines, and newspapers. The people that work at those places hate us with a burning passion, they want us to die, to lose every election ever, to be scandalized and chased out of office. Why do we support their business?

slickwillie2001 on August 8, 2011 at 10:30 AM

It’s no wonder that ‘Newsmagazine’ sold for a dollar.

Overpriced…

Michelle Obama seethes with rage.

Terp Mole on August 8, 2011 at 9:22 AM

She actually seems more real without the Oprah makeup and fake smile. She’s really a natural at seething with rage. They shouldn’t keep her so under wraps.

I hope she’s happy now that Barack has taken our country down a peg. Nah, they’re “not even halfway there yet…”

The difference is with the conservative women running, they fight back. The old strategy of not giving the MSM anything to make a fuss over, the old Republican duck and cover, doesn’t work it never did. If the media can’t find something on their targets, they just make stuff up, like they did during the Tuscon massacre.

The women have figured it out. The media is going to attack you if you are not a left wing loony so slap them back – stick their nose in it like a puppy being house trained LOL! I am a dog lover, I would never do that to a puppy, but I would do it to say Andrea Mitchell, although I don’t believe you can teach an old dog new tricks ;)

Dr Evil on August 8, 2011 at 10:38 AM

Don’t forget the McCain photo session during the 2008 campaign.

Go Galt on the MSM.

beatcanvas on August 8, 2011 at 9:11 AM

That was the nasty little witch Jill Greenberg for Atlantic. I’m mildly surprised her fellow coven member TB doesn’t have her on staff.

Apparently, juvenile controversy is the only way Newsweek can get anyone to pay attention anymore as Brown leads it down into the toilet bowl of history.

Brown also obviously understands what Newsweek has become, and who its present audience is. She is competing with Weekly World News for readership.

Any Republican who lets any MSM outlet use their own photog is a fool with a moron for a press aide. If they want a pic, give them a flattering one taken by your own photog. If they don’t like it, just tell them to buzz off. Exactly what good does anyone expect to come out cooperating with these tools anyway?

“…Do you know how old Nan is? She was born March 26, 1940. That makes her 71 years old does Nancy Pelosi look like a 71 year old woman? Not any 71 year old women I know…”

Dr Evil on August 8, 2011 at 10:12 AM

San Fran Nan? Why, she looks like a million! But I know she can’t be that old.

novaculus on August 8, 2011 at 10:43 AM

They are attacking Bachmann, they should be worried about what’s saddling up in Texas ;) He’s gonna kick some a$$ y’all. Even if Perry isn’t the nominee, Obama’s gonna get some dents put in him -that John McCain should have put in him back in 2008. Air Force doing clean up after the Navy, it ain’t right, but it’s okay.

Dr Evil on August 8, 2011 at 10:44 AM

It’s “NewSpeak”. Color me not surprised.

GarandFan on August 8, 2011 at 10:45 AM

Why do Conservative candidates keep on going to the most Liberal media especially losers like the moribund Newsweak? (Misspelling intended).
