Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on August 4, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Remember when athletes that had just won championships would grin into a camera and say, “I’m going to Disneyland” for an ad? It got to be so dull and predictable that Disney finally dropped the promotion. Unfortunately, Barack Obama has become even more predictable by the third year of his Presidency. Whenever Obama finishes working on any issue or project, he always says that he’s going to … Jobsland:

And in the coming months, I’ll continue also to fight for what the American people care most about:  new jobs, higher wages and faster economic growth.

Say, doesn’t that sound familiar?  It should.  The RNC has a helpful list of all the “pivots” Obama has made — so many that one wonders whether he leaves divots from his pivots:

THEN – DECEMBER 2009: Politico’s Playbook: “SIREN: White House Plans ‘Very Hard Pivot To Jobs’ Next Month.” (Mike Allen, “SIREN: White House Plans ‘Very Hard Pivot To Jobs’ Next Month — Will Be ‘Prescriptive’,” Politico’s “Playbook”, 12/23/09)

NOW – AUGUST 2011: Politico’s Playbook: “DEMS PLAN PIVOT TO JOBS.” (Mike Allen, “DEMS PLAN PIVOT TO JOBS: Transportation, Infrastructure, Tax Breaks On Fall Agenda,” Politico’s “Playbook”, 8/2/11)

AT A CERTAIN POINT, YOU NEED TO ADMIT IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR FOCUS AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH YOUR POLICIES

11/2/09:  President Obama Said That The Economy Was His “Overriding Focus.” “This is my administration’s overriding focus.  Having brought the economy back from the brink, the question is how are we going to make sure that people are getting back to work and able to support their families.” (President Barack Obama, “Remarks By The President During The Meeting Of The President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board,” The White House, 11/2/09)

12/23/09: “SIREN: White House Plans ‘Very Hard Pivot To Jobs’ Next Month.” (Mike Allen, “SIREN: White House Plans ‘Very Hard Pivot To Jobs’ Next Month — Will Be ‘Prescriptive’,” Politico’s “Playbook”, 12/23/09)

1/14/10: Obama Says He Will “Have A Sustained And Relentless Focus Over The Next Several Months On Accelerating The Pace Of Job Creation, Because That’s Priority Number One.” (President Barack Obama, Remarks At The House Democratic Caucus Retreat, Washington, DC 1/14/10)

1/28/10: Obama Told Town Hall In Tampa, Florida That “Creating Jobs Has To Be Our Number One Priority In 2010.” (President Barack Obama, Remarks At Town Hall Meeting, Tampa, FL, 1/28/10)

1/29/10: Obama Told Congressional Republicans That Americans “Want Us To Focus On Their Job Security.” (President Barack Obama, Remarks At GOP House Issues Conference, Baltimore, MD, 1/29/10)

  • By March, The New York Times Asked “Whatever Happened To That Shift From Health Care To The Economy?” “By the time March arrived, President Obama was supposed to be entering his third month of the year talking about three things: jobs, jobs, jobs. … So whatever happened to that shift from health care to the economy?” (Jeff Zeleny, “A Plan To Talk About Jobs, Elbowed Aside By Health Care,” The New York Times, 3/2/10)

3/17/10: Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY): “Congress Is Focusing On What The American People Want Us To Focus On, Which Is Jobs, Jobs, Jobs.” (Brian Faler, “Tax Break For New Hires Clear Congress In Jobs Bill,” Bloomberg, 3/17/10)

4/27/10: “Obama To Focus On Jobs, Rural Economy In Two-Day Midwest Trip.” (Roger Runningen, “Obama To Focus On Jobs, Rural Economy In Two-Day Midwest Trip,” Bloomberg, 4/27/10)

  • “President Barack Obama Embarks On A Two-Day, Campaign-Style Swing Through The Rural Midwest Today To Talk About The U.S. Economy And Jobs As He Turns Attention To What Will Be A Top Issue In The November Midterm Elections.” (Roger Runningen, “Obama To Focus On Jobs, Rural Economy In Two-Day Midwest Trip,” Bloomberg, 4/27/10)

5/18/10: “Democrats Shifting Focus Back To Jobs Creation.” (Jackie Calmes, “Democrats Shifting Focus Back To Jobs Creation,” The New York Times, 5/18/10)

  • “A Year That Democrats Decreed Would Be About ‘Jobs, Jobs, Jobs’ Has Produced A Far Different Check List.” “A year that Democrats decreed would be about ‘jobs, jobs, jobs’ has produced a far different check list as its sixth month nears: health care, financial regulation, energy, a nuclear arms treaty and a Supreme Court vacancy, as well as investigations into a mine accident, a calamitous oil spill, a failed terrorist attack in Times Square and alleged Wall Street fraud… They hope to change that starting this week.” (Jackie Calmes, “Democrats Shifting Focus Back To Jobs Creation,” The New York Times, 5/18/10)

6/17/10: The Obama Administration Kicks Off “Recovery Summer … A Six-Week Long Push Designed To Highlight The Jobs Accompanying A Surge In Stimulus-Funded Projects.” “Vice President Joe Biden today will kick off the Obama administration’s ‘Recovery Summer,’ a six-week-long push designed to highlight the jobs accompanying a surge in stimulus-funded projects to improve highways, parks, drinking water and other public works.” (Mike Allen, “Obama, Biden Declare ‘Recovery Summer’,” Politico, 6/17/10)

7/12/10: Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV): “This Work Period, Like Every Work Period, Will Be About Jobs: How To Create Them, How To Save Them …” (Sen. Harry Reid, Floor Remarks, 7/12/10)

  • 8/25/10: MSNBC’s Chuck Todd: “I Have To Say These Housing Numbers, This Entire Summer, Remember It Began – The Administration Called It ‘Recovery Summer.’ Every Economic Indicator Has Collapsed In The Last Two Months.” (MSNBC, “The Daily Rundown,” 8/25/10)

9/8/10: Obama Launches A “Hail-Mary Pass To Stimulate The Economy And Create New Jobs.” “Facing a grim unemployment picture and potentially disastrous mid-term elections for Democrats, President Obama is launching the political equivalent of a hail-Mary pass to stimulate the economy and create new jobs.” (Editorial, “Desperately Seeking Jobs,” The Miami Herald, 9/8/10)

  • “Voters Are Entitled To Ask Why The Administration Has Waited So Long To Focus On Job Creation …” “Voters are entitled to ask why the administration has waited so long to focus on job creation (beyond government jobs). By doing so very late in the game, it suggests that Mr. Obama is desperate to find solutions for an economic stimulus plan that failed.” (Editorial, “Desperately Seeking Jobs,” The Miami Herald, 9/8/10)

12/22/10: President Obama Said “We Now Have To Pivot And Focus On Jobs And Growth.” (President Barack Obama, News Conference, Washington D.C., 12/22/10)

  • Obama Added That “Making A Dent In The Unemployment Rate” Was His “Singular Focus.” “And my singular focus over the next two years is not rescuing the economy from potential disaster, but rather jumpstarting the economy so that we actually start making a dent in the unemployment rate and we are equipping ourselves so that we can compete in the 21st century.” (President Barack Obama, News Conference, Washington D.C., 12/22/10)

1/31/11: “The White House Has Quickly Pivoted To Jobs After The President’s State Of The Union.” “Turning to domestic politics, the White House has quickly pivoted to jobs after the president’s State of the Union — even if it’s being overshadowed by the situation in Egypt.” (“First Thoughts: Balancing Act,” NBC News’ “First Read,” 1/31/11)

4/1/11: “Obama’s Day: Turning Back To Jobs … President Obama Returns Today To What He Calls His Top Priority: Jobs.” “Though his presidential hours have been crowded by Libya, Japan and other foreign policy challenges, President Obama returns today to what he calls his top priority: jobs.” (David Jackson, “Obama’s Day: Turning Back To Jobs,” USA Today, 4/1/11)

8/2/11: “OBAMA AND SENATE DEMS PLAN PIVOT TO JOBS: Senate Democrats hope they now have ‘checked the box’ on debt reduction and can move to an agenda focused on job creation and economic growth, through a combination of spending and tax cuts.” (Mike Allen, “DEMS PLAN PIVOT TO JOBS: Transportation, Infrastructure, Tax Breaks On Fall Agenda,” Politico’s “Playbook”, 12/23/09)

If we had a job for every time Obama insisted that he was focused on creating jobs, we’d be at record low unemployment by now.  Maybe Obama should stop talking about pivots and just do his job.  Besides, if Obama thinks that he can get real job creation from Obamanomics, he’s already living in Fantasyland.

Is this gonna be a hard pivot or a soft pivot?

I know he said he is gonna focus…but I’d rather he did not.

This could be a campaign ad Ed!

He’s gonna break an ankle if he doesn’t stop all this pivoting.

Key West Reader on August 4, 2011 at 8:12 AM

Breaking!!!

Jobs have just been placed on the endangered species list. The Obama adminstration is suing to remove Jobs from the list saying there is no evidence they’re endangered.

darwin on August 4, 2011 at 8:13 AM

Fantasyland is what liberal policies are generally based on. They enact socialist policies because they think that would work if people acted the way liberals believe they should. The fact that human nature renders a communist utopia unworkable is irrelevant to them. If I made decisions the way liberals do I would step over the edge of a cliff without fear because humans may someday develop the ability to fly.

POTUS pivot divots: shovel ready?

Yoop on August 4, 2011 at 8:26 AM

If he could have drawn out even 30,000 jobs every time he says that he will focus on it, he would have shaved 3% off of the unemployment figures.

Does Jobsland have a golf course?

ss396 on August 4, 2011 at 8:28 AM

Maybe Obama should stop talking about pivots and just do his job.

Best thing Dear Liar, or any president, can do is cut regulations, keep tax rates low, and let the private sector thrive which will lead to job creation. Presidents, or government in general, do not create jobs. The private sector does. Only by hampering the private sector does government impact job creation — negatively.

rbj on August 4, 2011 at 8:29 AM

He doesn’t have to pivot, he’s been working on (destroying) jobs all along.

ElectricPhase on August 4, 2011 at 8:29 AM

You know how some people say they’re writers while they spend a decade or so lolling about and still talk about how they “need to finish the book”…

Obama is like that where the issue of “jobs” is concerned. He appears to think that “jobs” means talking-about-jobs. Otherwise, he’s never created one and does not appear to understand how it is that someone does. Taxing people in business is not the way to go about it but Obama can’ t even understand *that*.

Lourdes on August 4, 2011 at 8:32 AM

And the nomenclature Obama uses (in this specific case, “pivot”): remember how Obama claimed he “knows the game” when asked how well he played basketball? He’s really the guy in the field who talks a big game but never actually plays the game in any fashion anyone else admires or finds useful. Except as t-shirts and entertainment.

Obama ‘worked his way through college’ while he held a job scooping icecream for a few weeks (perhaps a month or so?). Since he attended very expensive schools (Occidental, Columbia, Harvard Law), that icecream-scooping job must have paid him something around $500,000. a day.

Lourdes on August 4, 2011 at 8:35 AM

Unemployment numbers just in and they’re not good.

If Obama keeps pivoting, he’ll soon spin out of control.

LASue on August 4, 2011 at 8:37 AM

Summing things up here:

Barack Obama is mentally ill.

There is something quite disturbed about his psyche and it goes way beyond the political. Something’s disturbed profoundly about his mind.

HA is going pornographic. One thread is all about testicles and now this thread about a dick.

He does realize that if he keeps pivoting, he won’t make any forward progress, right?

exhelodrvr on August 4, 2011 at 8:40 AM

And in the coming months, I’ll continue also to fight for what the American people care most about: new jobs, higher wages and faster economic growth.

Who, exactly, is he going to fight to get those jobs? The massive anti-job lobby in D.C.? The corporate jet owners? Who the f**k has been staking out a position against job creation?

Look in the mirror, pal – you’re the one who’s retarding job creation.

landshark on August 4, 2011 at 8:42 AM

Clearly the problem is that we weren’t ready for a black president. You heard it here first!

exhelodrvr on August 4, 2011 at 8:45 AM

FACTS (these Unemployment articles/”pivots”) mean nothing to Progressives/Libs.

You can talk to them till your face is blue and they will just tell you that Sarah Palin used the GOP to buy her clothes, and Trig is not her son.

PappyD61 on August 4, 2011 at 8:50 AM

This reminds me of an incident I was going to mention at Disneyworld. My son and I are history buffs; my 9-year old adores George Washington. So, during a rainstorm, we went into the Hall of Presidents, which was amazing. They had an automaton show, in which the Presidents seem to come alive — like Washington and Lincoln, who both gave a recitation of one of their famous speeches. Happily, Ronald Reagan was also featured in their video presentation(which was a surprise).

I knew that Obama was going to be highlighted — so I braced for it like I would for a root canal. Sure enough, the Obama automaton gave the inaugural address. Now, as this is a kid-oriented place, I am sure many people like myself stifled their real thoughts out of politeness. I did hear someone next to me whisper very softly “a$$”. The applause was very tepid –

ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO THE THUNDERING APPLAUSE FOR ALL THE PRESIDENTS AT THE END OF THE SHOW.

At this point, I would love to be living in Tomorrowland 2013 with President #45. I missing having a real President.

It really isn’t that hard to see, that he’s deliberately destroying this country. The saddest part to me is…he has help doing it. By so called Americans. Anyone that wants to destroy their country, doesn’t love their country.

The constant refrain of “fight” on every issue bugs me. It’s uniongoonspeak, and all Dems in campaign mode use it.

Who is he fighting for new jobs? Businesses.

Who is he fighting for higher wages? Businesses.

And the one to fight for faster economic growth would be Abu Barack Hussein bin Obooba.
