These Americans are like parasites
posted at 8:45 am on August 2, 2011 by Jazz Shaw
And here we all thought that the global economy actually depended on the United States and the solid status of the dollar as a reserve currency. It may come as a shock to you to find out that we’ve actually been the problem all along. In fact, we’re essentially little more than ticks on the Bichon Frise of global finances. And what more reliable source for such thoughtful analysis than… Vladimir Putin?
“They are living beyond their means and shifting a part of the weight of their problems to the world economy,” Putin told the pro-Kremlin youth group Nashi while touring its lakeside summer camp some five hours drive north of Moscow.
“They are living like parasites off the global economy and their monopoly of the dollar,” Putin said at the open-air meeting with admiring young Russians in what looked like early campaigning before parliamentary and presidential polls.
Let’s not mistake this for anything other than what it really is. Russia has elections coming up and Putin is positioning himself for either another run at the presidency or to be the kingmaker in the background. His tune hasn’t changed in a very long time either. Putin has a long history of rattling sabers and cranking up tension, increasing his popularity by trying to remind voters of the glory days of the Soviet Union. And it’s not too far fetched to imagine that many younger Russians long for the days they never knew when their country was a co-equal superpower on the world stage.
Putin’s calls go past bravado and into farce territory, though, when he suggests that perhaps the ruble should be the back-up currency of choice as a world standard. In terms of stability and strength, the ruble is approximately as solid as cottage cheese on a New York sidewalk in July. But, again, it’s easy to understand how he would want to pump up the national pride of a youth group like that as he seeks to marshal support for his future plans.
(ED: Even better if Putin “marshals” support.)

Why do I get the impression that Rootin-Tootin’ Putin is thinking of nostalgically redecorating Russia and possibly most of Eastern Europe in a brand new set of curtains……….of the Iron variety?

When the Communist Party openly endorses Obama and the democrats, then attacks from within and without, as Putin sees blood in the water, will increase in intensity as the demise of our country becomes more evident.

For “parasites,” we sure do send a lot of $US all around the globe. Including to Russia, what with that great big “wheat bailout” years ago to help Russians not starve.

PatriotRider on August 2, 2011 at 9:08 AM
If Putin were the only one trying to switch from the dollar to, say, a basket of currencies, he could be dismissed. Trouble is, plenty more countries agree with him. The way it looks, it’s going to happen. The question is when.

Putin is right. We are inflating away our debt problem by printing money. That hurts the balance sheets of a lot of nations sitting on dollars and/or owed dollars.
It’s going to take a while to get back the trust that Obama and the Dems are busy squandering.

What happened to the Soviet Union again Comrade Putin? (Socialism Fails Always) Who bailed your country out after the United Soviet Socialist Republic dissolved? What country is referred to as the Last Super Power? Hint it’s not Russia LOL! Americans are parasites and don’t contribute? Russians have contributed so much to the world, I was thinking about going out for some Russian food tonight – NOT.

Wouldn’t that be the “U.S.” dollar he’s referring to?

An abuse of U.S. social services by the Russian people is part of our deficit-spending problem.
It has been somewhat “standard practice” among Russians for a while to fly to the U.S. East Coast (NY and area, especially) with their aged parents or other relatives and then to leave them there, while the exporters return to Russia afterward (leaving their needy relatives behind to be supported by the U.S. taxpayers).
Lourdes on August 2, 2011 at 9:46 AM
Interesting. I just finished reading a really badly writen book (which unfortunately had Tom Clancy’s name on the cover) that was premised on a grain bailout of Russia in 1999 (I think it was published in 97). Why Clancy allowed himself to be associated with that mockery of his work, I doubt I will ever know.

The Ruble hasn’t been a stable currency since about the time of Catherine.

Ouch! He’s right.
The financial sector that invested in bundled toxic assets and the politicians who forced them to be created should have been destroyed by the crash. Instead, they’re back on top and have spread the cost of their madness across America, American’s children and to some degree around the world. We’re now living “beyond our means” as parasites on our unborn children who will each inherit $200k (and growing) of out debt.

What did he say that was so bad?
Isn’t this a TRUE statement? How many commenters on HA said exactly the same thing? That … we must continue to live beyond our means because, we cannot risk a default or the entire world’s economy would be crushed?
Pretty much correct again here. It’s a fact that the only thing that has saved us from the crisis that hit Greece is our dollar … which has built a repuation since WWII (after which, almost every other nation’s currency was worthless). But – those days are in the past. We are NOT doing anything to enhance the dollar today – and haven’t for some time. We’re parasiticly living off our past laurels while destroying the dollar through QE1, QE2 … and soon QE3.

Calling Americans “parasites” is an awful thing to say, and clearly Putin is in demagogic mode for his election as JS says.
However, this:
..is a fair criticism.*
A loathing of debt, a belief in honest dealing and living within your means are the virtues on which a sound economy must be based. This understanding has been discarded in recent times. If “fiscal conservatism” is not this, then what is it?
*Which is not to say that Russia is perfect in this regard.

Putin’s an Xtreme jerkovich, but that doesn’t mean he’s wrong in his assessment. The world is putting up with our fiscal incontinence only because every alternative looks worse.

And I suppose, according to Putin, that activities like:
governmental counterfeitting of American currency
refusal to enforce software and other copyrights
refusal to enforce patents
governmental scamming of U.S. insurance companies
are not parasitic.
If those parasites would just abide by international law we wouldn’t have a debt problem.
