Obama’s speech: Evidence of just how little the debt deal accomplishes

posted at 2:35 pm on August 2, 2011 by Tina Korbe

As Yogi Berra would say, “It’s deja vu all over again.” The president today took to the podium in the White House Rose Garden to purportedly praise the debt ceiling deal that just passed the Senate. Instead, he used the opportunity to call for — yep, you guessed it — “a balanced approach” to deficit reduction in the future.

“The compromise requires that both parties work together on a plan to cut the deficit, and, since you can’t close the deficit with just spending cuts, we’ll need a balanced approach,” Obama said. “Yes, that means making some adjustments to programs like Medicare [to ensure they'll be around in the future.] It also means reforming our tax code to ensure the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations pay their fair share. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: We can’t balance the budget on the backs of the very people who’ve born the biggest brunt of this recession.”

He’s also said this before (or something sure like it), but he said it again anyway:

“Voters may have chosen divided government, but they sure didn’t vote for dysfunctional government. They want us to get the economy growing. Deficit reduction is part of that agenda, but it is not the whole agenda. Growing the economy isn’t just about cutting spending and rolling back regulations that protect our air and water and keep people safe. We’re going to have to do more than that.”

He then launched into calls for a payroll tax cut, a boost to unemployment insurance benefits, an infrastructure bank and the passage of important trade agreements, among other things. It sounded just like the speech he delivered in the same location about a month ago — and I was calling that a repeat speech of an earlier speech. Gotta say this for the guy: He stays on message. The president’s unchanged remarks reveal just how little the debt deal accomplished. All that was missing from the speech were the dire threats of a default. That only, it seems, is different today than yesterday. (For that matter, the unchanged remarks of Republicans also reveal just how irrelevant the deal actually is. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, for example, just took to the floor to highlight the need for deeper spending cuts.)

Listening to the president’s speech, though, I understood for the first time why so many are calling the compromise a victory for Republicans. Completely absent from the president’s remarks were any of the truly self-congratulatory statements that would have characterized such a speech if he had definitively won tax increases. He didn’t even rub it in that he’s free and clear to campaign from now until the election, thanks to the timeline of the debt ceiling increase. But, then again, the fact that he essentially just delivered a stump speech might be his ever-so-clever way of gloating about that — because that’s definitely what this was, evidence of an insubstantial deal and proof that Obama is still the consummate campaigner.

How silly he is to think that ANYTHING will come from this commission.

There will be no recommendations agreed to by the commission. This will mean projected cuts to projected budgets in the projected future. That future is of course, AFTER the 2012 election!

OT but on Obama:

(weeklystandard) Bombshell: White House Knew About ATF Gunrunning Scandal

At a lengthy hearing on ATF’s controversial gunwalking operation today, a key ATF manager told Congress he discussed the case with a White House National Security staffer as early as September 2010. The communications were between ATF Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix office, Bill Newell, and White House National Security Director for North America Kevin O’Reilly. Newell said the two are longtime friends. The content of what Newell shared with O’Reilly is unclear and wasn’t fully explored at the hearing.

For various reasons relating to the White House’s gun policies and relations with Mexico, many have speculated that the White House was involved. (This involves a lot of political posturing on guns by the White House, which I explain in detail in my piece mentioned above.) But this is the first concrete proof that the White House knew what was going on.

More like $7 Trillion added debt over 10 years, but the 10 year stuff is BS anyway since spending can be changed at any time.

Besides obviously winning in 2012, I would love to see the CBO scoring rules changed to zero-based budgeting starting by February 2013 (for the 2014 budget).

Let’s get on to crafting a responsible budget for 2012 where we can make real changes to the the spending and regulating by the WH so as to create more of those things Obama didn’t even have the foresight to mention in his speech — jobs — and grow the economy, thereby adding revenue which will also assist in reducing the deficit.

I bet he’ll want to do a budget for Oct 1 and in there he’ll be asking for a new balanced approach to all this. I think in Sept we will be going through this all over again. He noticed that he was white from the neck to the top of his head.

In a sheer panic and fearing he was turning white all over, he called his doctor and told him what had happened.

The doctor advised him to come to his office immediately.

After an examination, the doctor mixed a concoction of brown liquid, gave it to Barack, and told him to drink it all.

Barack drank the concoction and said, “That tasted like bullshit!”

Today he discovered his hands were red. It was diagnosed as coming from all the red ink he has been using in forming his budget proposal to Congress. The doctor said he didn’t need to panic, but the American citizens should.

Thanks. I was speaking with a realtor a few days ago. He said this recession (or depression) is the fourth one his business has been through. He said this one is by far the worst, second only to the one immediately after we pulled out of Viet Nam. The sad thing is that this could be turned around overnight if Obama would do three things.

1. Federal income tax cuts across the board.
2. Eliminate capital gains tax.
3. Guarantee a permit will be issued within 72 hours for anyone wanting to drill for oil anywhere in the U.S.

Many members of Congress are extremely wealthy. Mitch McConnell, iirc, is the wealthiest member of the Senate, for example. This is to say that our elected officials have more in common with one another than they do with their constituents. They’re not going to raise taxes on themselves, and they must love BO yakking about taxing the rich and waging class warfare. It’s a distraction for fools because what this really is meant to be is a gateway to tax the middle class even more. That’s the easiest way to control people. The health care debacle is another good example.

Obama: wealthy people are not paying their fair share. They need to be taxed at a higher rate, and they need to start employing Americans. This narrative in effect is like slapping the job creators back and forth across the face. There will be no serious hiring in this country until Obama is out of office. Because every time he opens his mouth, it’s clear he’s hostile to the business folks aka successful, job creators. He’s behaves anti business, they have waited, and waited for him to loosen his grip on regressive regulation and taxation. All he tells Americans is the same thing – He’s not going to change his position on the job creators also known as successful business people, he believes they are not contributing their fair share. Even if he changed his position, and started singing a new tune after using them for class warfare, who is going to trust him?

There’s not going to be any real change in unemployment until Obama is out of office. He’s poisoned the well with his class warfare rhetoric IMO.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: We can’t balance the budget on the backs of the very people who’ve born the biggest brunt of this recession.

..This is just flabbergasting! Tina, you need to fix the formatting of your post: there’s some blockquotes missing. If the above is, in fact, an excerpt form this jerkwad’s speech that he is truly clueless and — hopefully — will get tossed onto the ashheap of history that way next November.

that is quite ‘remarkable’, especially after Putin just said in a recent campaign speech that the ‘US is parasite on the global economy’…maybe that’s his way of thanking Barry for destroying this country from within….it spares them the resources to do so :-(

Translating for Bluffy the Economy Slayer: we need to raise taxes.
Forget about what it might do for the Obama Recession.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Albert Einstein
Can there be any other diagnosis of the Democratic psychosis?
Chip on August 2, 2011 at 2:49 PM

It never seems to sink in with people that Einstein was making an unjustified and incorrect attack on Quantum Physics with that remark.

Count to 10 on August 2, 2011 at 3:06 PM

Ah yes, but that is certainly applicable to the world at large.

Leftist tried the stimulus and it didn’t work, so instead of trying something else – something that Has worked in the past – they want to do the same thing and they are Hoping for a Change to something else.

Sure sounds like people who aren’t firing on all thrusters, people who are a couple fries shy of a happy meal, a few bricks shy of a load….

Deficit Reduction? Just look at the numbers and you will realize what a bunch of BS this is!
MORE BLANK CHECKS AND NOT ADDRESSING THE REAL PROBLEM DOES NOT FIX ANYTHING!

I should have said “one” of the wealthiest…. as I remembered his net to be ~ 32 mil. But that isn’t the argument. It’s fine with me that these folks are wealthy. Good for them. They will take care of themselves, and we must watch out for them.

The problem with the stamp is that it only stays affixed to the left side of the envelope.

That’s actually brilliant, he’s counting on millions the world over to buy the stamps just to add another Obama souvenir to their collections, and it will never be redeemed so it’s 99% profit.

I’m sure too that there are Americans stupid enough to try and use them here. I suppose if our Post Office rejects those letters they will be called racist.
