Debt ceiling remix: “Dance on the ceiling”

posted at 5:07 pm on July 26, 2011 by Tina Korbe

While angry voters across the country crash Capitol Hill phone lines and websites to tell their congressional representatives their views about the debt crisis, Hill staffers have been circulating a list of songs to keep their spirits up as the debt ceiling stalemate continues. Here, three of the most appropriate songs on the list:

Lionel Richie: Dancing on the Ceiling

The Eagles: Take it to the Limit

And my favorite for the Republicans … Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: I Won’t Back Down

The other songs on the list (profanity and inappropriate content in some): Dire Straits, Money for Nothing; Red Hot Chili Peppers, Higher Ground; Notorious B.I.G., Get Money; Lil Wayne, Sky’s the Limit; Bloodhound Gang, The Roof is on Fire; Bad Boy Productions, Mo Money Mo Problems; The Beatles, Taxman; The Temptations, Ain’t Too Proud to Beg; Amy Winehouse, Back to Black; Madonna, Borderline; Barrett Strong, Money (That’s what I want); ABBA, Money Money Money; The OJ’s, For the Love of Money; Paul Engeman, Push It to the Limit; Jason Derule, The Sky’s the Limit; and The Beatles, HELP!

This list is a good start, but I’m sure there are more and better options out there — a couple with fewer cusswords and more melody, maybe? Feel free to add your suggestions!

Here’s the Democratic National Socialist Committee’s fav:

Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We’ll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

“Dancing on the Ceiling” is easily one of the worst songs ever recorded. I can’t figure out what happened to Lionel after he left the Commodores. He stripped all of the soulful underpinnings, leaving us with lifeless generic “pop”.

The fact that the lyrics probably aren’t a reference to getting high just seems to make matters worse.

I’ll pass.

How about a duet?
D rep -”I see you ridin’ round town in a corporate jet
and I’m like F* You”

R Rep- “I guess the change you stole from my pocket wasn’t enough
And I’m like F* You and F* Harry Reid too”

See? bipartisan.

Okay seriously the best song for this is R.E.M.
“it’s the end of the world as we know it”

Out of the ruins,
Out from the wreckage,
Can’t make the same mistake this time -
We are the children,
the last generation,
We are the ones they left behind,
And I wonder when we are ever gonna change -
Living under the fear till nothing else remains -

We don’t need another hero,
We don’t need to know the way home,
All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome.

Looking for something we can rely on.
There’s got to be something better out there -
Love and compassion, their day is coming,
All else are castles built in the air,
And I wonder when we are ever gonna change,
Living under the fear till nothing else remains,
All the children say:

We don’t need another hero,
We don’t need to know the way home,
All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome.

So, what do we do with our lives?
We leave only a mark -
Will our story shine like a light,
Or end in the dark?
Give it all or nothing!

We don’t need another hero,
We don’t need to know the way home,
All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome…

“Beyond Thunderdome”, as sung by Tina Turner

And I have no sympathy for someone sitting at their desk, blogging about others sacrificing, and others not sacrificing. You apparently must walk around dressed in black and constant mourning.
Why I bet the brave men on the front line even tell a joke or two at times…of course that would be out of order because the men before them had “driven through so much”.
Lighten up pal…

Long hair, short fuse,
Waiting for a six-string dropout to give you the news.

The passion, that you choose,
Ain’t a damn thing “progressive” about what you call your “views”.

You’re waiting for a wind,
100 years or more,
But now it’s time you see,
That all we’ve got to be is free!

Happy guys, sad souls,
nature’s got a funny way of taking back control.

Tradition, and fidelity,
You love to hate them both in the name of “sensitivity”

You’re waiting for a wind,
100 years or more,
But now it’s time you see,
That all we’ve got to be is free!

Turtle necks, and politics,
Anarchy with leaders, fashion statements and guitar licks.

Blue sky, and Mother Earth,
You pray to dirt just to avoid rebirth.

You’re waiting for a wind,
100 years or more,
But now it’s time you see,
That all we’ve got to be is free!
