Obama: I wish I could bypass Congress and change things on my own

posted at 4:02 pm on July 25, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via National Journal. He’s quick to add, “But that’s not how our system works.” Doesn’t it? Bypassing Congress to whatever extent possible has been his strategy for more than a year, culminating in an unauthorized war in Libya that even his own lawyers believe is illegal. (FYI: According to Mike Mullen, that war is now indeed a “stalemate.”) Scarcely a day passes without a new op-ed by some lefty law professor arguing that the Fourteenth Amendment lets Obama raise the debt ceiling unilaterally, despite decades of congressional precedent to the contrary. And ICE has already decided to go ahead and consider factors championed by the DREAM Act in immigration cases despite the fact that the Act hasn’t passed. O may say “no we can’t” here to the suggestion of executively-imposed amnesty, but in light of the above, can you blame the La Raza crowd for thinking (and chanting) “yes we can”?

George Will, describing The One as “Huey Long with a better tailor,” has had enough:

Inordinate self-regard is an occupational hazard of politics and part of the job description of the rhetorical presidency, this incessant tutor. Still, upon what meat doth this our current Caesar feed that he has grown so great that he presumes to command leaders of a coequal branch of government? He once boasted (June 3, 2008) that he could influence the oceans’ rise; he must be disabused of comparable delusions about controlling Congress.

When he was a lecturer on constitutional law, he evidently skipped the separation-of-powers doctrine. But, then, because this doctrine impedes the progressives’ goal of unleashing untrammeled government, they have long loathed it: Woodrow Wilson, the first president to criticize the American founding, considered the separation of powers the Constitution’s “radical defect.”

It has, however, rescued the nation from Obama’s preference for a “clean” debt-ceiling increase that would ignore the onrushing debt tsunami. There are 87 reasons for Obama’s temporary conversion of convenience to the cause of spending restraint — the 87 House Republican freshmen. Their inflexibility astonishes and scandalizes Washington because it reflects the rarity of serene fidelity to campaign promises.

The true stupidity of this clip, of course, is that — as with everything else — his constitutional faux-modesty is motivated by getting reelected. It’s not that he has some profound separation-of-powers objection to an executive amnesty; it’s that he knows independents would seethe at the power grab, especially on an issue as sensitive as immigration, and it’d end up hurting him badly at the polls. He’s already got the Latino vote locked up. Better, then, to play it safe with indies by paying lip service to La Raza about how his hands are tied or that he “needs a dance partner,” etc. Whatever excuse works.

What is the most frightening part of this equation is how does a narcissist this totally clueless become the leader of the free world. His corruption and incompetence is on levels never comprehended before. We have to remember that the establishment/RINOs created a political climare where this kind of disaster could happen. Flush the RINOs in the in 2012 so this does not ever happen again. If the Tea Party had not held their ground our economy would have been screwed for years. The debacle is not over yet.

The land deserves the punishment, for taking a chance with him. If he were not real, no one could invent such an impertinent thug. That he got to where he is, based on nada, and that he and his will live like billionaires, is the travesty to the world.

But I’m sympathetic to your view that this would be easier if I could do this entirely on my own. (Laughter.) It would mean all these conversations I’ve had over the last three weeks I could have been spending time with Malia and Sasha playing more golf, and avoiding actual Presidenting, which is hard, instead.

Fixed.

with everything else — his constitutional faux-modesty is motivated by getting reelected.

Every action, decision, favor to a voting bloc centers around his re-election. Now that Obama has given voice to what we have long suspected (unilateral decisions), one has to wonder what he will do when he isn’t re-elected.

Thankfully Boehner is standing firm. Obama needs to give in to this, but he’s so stubborn and selfish. Is this the tipping point?

You know, this is the second time he has said this in a matter of days. That is not a good sign. One time is just a stupid slip of the tongue. Twice in a few days sounds like a plan.

I am serious. This guy is dangerous. The first time he was just whining. This time he kicked it up a notch and said “it’s tempting to go around congers on a matter of things” or something like that. This is serious stuff. This isn’t some street cleaner fantasizing about power.. this is the President of the US.. a guy who may very well be responsible for trafficking guns down into Mexico, who has seized American business, who has destroyed our economy, praises our enemies and stiffs our friends. Obama has already crossed a lot of lines. He ignores court orders and ignores laws.
This guy is looking at 2012 and is getting really nervous.
Saying this twice in a few days.. this is scary stuff here. Just give him a reason and he will go for it.

silvernana on July 25, 2011 at 5:18 PM

You know the freaking MSM will be there to cheer him on! Anybody really think Chris Matthews is going to complain about Obama seizing more power?

So what would we all ever know if tomorrow the internet was dead and talk radio and Fox was nothing but static? Where would you go? CNN? MSNBC? ABC?

If we don’t know what is going on then we don’t know do we? But we will be told something from the trusted MSM I am sure.

This is not paranoia.. Obama is the one acting paranoid. Anybody who does not take this guy seriously is fooling themselves.

All he needs to do in his mind is get things under control. How do you think he’d go about doing that?

I’m throwing this out…. in 2008, during the election, we had an emergency so grave and threatening that President Bush and others came out to Americans and said we needed immediate action to avert a world wide crisis. The threat was immediate. Action had to be taken “now!”

Obama may have his blueprint. The stage may already be set. America defaulting could “throw the world into a financial crisis so large it would be cataclysmic.” Obama has to act now! Congress and democracy is moving to slow! Emergency powers must be used now to avert financial apocalypse!

The opportunity is there for him. Will he seize it?

JellyToast on July 25, 2011 at 5:22 PM

I read somewhere just a few minutes ago (can’t find it now) where ICE is going to start implementing parts of the DREAM Act even tho it didn’t pass Congress. This administration doesn’t need Congress – they do what they want to do. Obama is throwing this out because it is probably his plan and this just softens it a bit.

I called John Boehner’s office and spoke to one of his staff about this.
I said that this is the second time in just a few day I have watched a video of the President fantasizing about bypassing congress and that I think it should be addressed by the GOP. No American President should be out there repeatedly making statements about how tempting it is to by pass congress and seize more power for themselves! One time is just a stupid thing to say. Twice in a few day.. people need to ask the question.. Why is he saying this?

The staff person was very respectful and sounded concerned and didn’t seem aware about it. I told him he could see the video on HotAir.

I don’t know if I can post the capital switchboard number here or not, but just google it or something. It’s not hard to find. The GOP can not let Obama get away with saying crap like that repeatedly. this is not what American president do! Del Dolemonte on July 25, 2011 at 6:11 PM

No.

While in IL Emil Jones took legislation others Dems had worked on and handed it off to Obama.

As Jones once said (apparently at Obama’s instigation), “I’m gonna make me a U.S. Senator”:

Jones appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills.

A couple of years ago I tried to track down any legislation Obama had initiated and finished as a US Senator. I don’t remember finding anything major (if anything at all). I didn’t count co-sponsored bills as once one guy proposes something a lot of others join in.

INC on July 25, 2011 at 7:06 PM

I should have included this part of the quote as well:

Jones became the State Senate President when the Democrats took the majority in 2003, and basically created most of Obama’s legislative record by adding Obama’s name on other people’s bills.

The constitutional argument confuses me. I am surprised that these presumably intelligent law professors can’t comprehend the difference between invalid debt and debt that someone is incapable of paying. For example, if the issue with all of the mortgages over the last 5 years was that the debt was invalid, the result would be that the homeowners would own their homes free and clear rather than being foreclosed on.
