Will Gunwalker morph into “Grenadewalker” soon?

posted at 5:40 pm on July 22, 2011 by Jazz Shaw

Bob Owens of Pajamas Media, who was out in front of the Gunwalker scandal well in advance of the rest of us, brings to light yet another story this week which might make the last one look tame by comparison. If the allegations are true, informants with ties to the CIA are now chatting up another deal where we may have been running military grade weaponry to the violent Zetas cartel in Mexico.

Phil Jordan, a former CIA operative and one-time leader of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s El Paso Intelligence Center, claims that the Obama administration is running guns to the violent Zetas cartel through the direct commercial sale of military grade weapons…

The U.S. Direct Commercial Sales program is run from the U.S. State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls. It regulates and licenses private U.S. companies’ overseas sales of weapons and other defense materials, defense services, and military training. This does not include the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, which authorized sales to foreign governments.

The list of contraband here goes well beyond assault rifles, including “anti-aircraft weapons and hand grenades from the Vietnam War era” as well as, “grenade launchers… and military gear including night-vision goggles and body armor.”

The CIA connection comes via one of their contractors.

Robert “Tosh” Plumlee, a former CIA contract pilot, told the Times he supported Jordan’s allegations, adding that the Zetas have reportedly bought property in the Columbus, N.M., border region to stash weapons and other contraband.

“From the intel, it appears that a company was set up in Mexico to purchase weapons through the U.S. Direct Commercial Sales Program, and that the company may have had a direct link to the Zetas.”

Bob has all the details at the link provided, so check it out. If this pans out, there are far bigger problems bubbling up from the bowls of the agencies involved than we even suspected before. This type of pattern rises far above mere incompetence and a very thorough housecleaning is going to be required to set things back anywhere near ship shape.

Not very long ago I would have looked at this story with a jaundiced eye and wondered if there were some agents engaging in the settling of old scores. But this many rotten apples continue to make it appear as if the entire barrel could be rotten.

Zetas may be smuggling weapons By Diana Washington Valdez \ El Paso Times

The brutally violent Zetas drug organization may be smuggling military-grade weapons through El Paso and Columbus, N.M., to feed its ongoing battles against other cartels and to possibly disrupt the 2012 elections in Mexico.

“They’ve found anti-aircraft weapons and hand grenades from the Vietnam War era,” Plumlee said. Other weapons found include grenade launchers, assault rifles, handguns and military gear including night-vision goggles and body armor.

At some point you have to set the death penalty for an organization that has screwed up so many times for so long. If ATF was a private corporation they would have been forced out of business fifteen years ago. How does the ATF get away with it?

How did ‘the Zetas’ drug cartel obtain weapons for criminal activity?

Since Barack Obama took office in 2009, the commonly-accepted mantra of the Administration, and many within the major news organizations, is that the violence associated with Mexican drug cartels is fueled by guns that came from the United States due to its ‘lax gun control laws.’ Indeed, the dangerous ‘Zetas’ drug cartel obtained weapons in the United States for their criminal activity both in Mexico and throughout the American Southwest.

However, the manner in which the Zetas obtained those weapons directly contradicts the official Administration stance on the consequences of lax gun control laws.

The Zetas obtained their weapons through a little-publicized program implemented by the U.S. State Department called ‘U.S. Direct Commercial Sales.’ The program was intended to regulate the sale of U.S. firearms to other countries, and a direct commercial sale of a firearm requires an export license. However, as it has been demonstrated repeatedly with the Project Gunwalker Scandal at the ATF, honorable intentions often go terribly awry, particularly when widespread corruption infects a multiplicity of government agencies.

The bottom line is that the DOJ’s own internal report on the Gunrunner program shows that the ultimate goal of the entire operation was to manufacture phony statistics in order to make a case for tighter gun control, despite the fact that its own figures do not support the assumption that most Mexican guns come from the United States.

ATF as part of DoJ, State, Commerce (they are circumventing normal trade controls, after all), DHS (the border), Treasury (which has some of the revenue jurisdiction for A and F plus just where is that money coming from/going to?)… why the list of Departments, Agencies and such starts to look pretty wide.

Holder is looking like the starting point in this, the heads of other organizations must have at least been informed about it when their agents reported the activities going on. Intentionally ignoring their enforcement responsibilities, their jurisdictional responsiblities and then going on to aid and abet? Conspiracy. Soon to be one out in the open.

In other news:

NRA Beats Back Gun Control Measures

Bracing for a wave of expected gun control measures, the National Rifle Association and supporters in Congress pushed back hard this month to derail the initial efforts. At least five antigun efforts were killed for now.

The key vote came last week to bar a new rule that would require gun dealers in Southwest border states to report the sales of two or more semi-automatic rifles larger than .22 caliber. The NRA also was able to stop the administration from blocking the importation of shotguns that have various features not liked by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, like extended magazine tubes and adjustable stocks. Those features are typical on guns used for competition.

Awww.. They didn’t even get an omelet out of all this deceit, death and destruction

But, Jazz, they obviously just didn’t have enough resources to do the job correctly. The programs involved need to have their budgets at least doubled.
And new, skillful, committed leadership is also necessary.
Fortunately, Paul Helmke just became available.

eeyore on July 22, 2011 at 6:56 PM

When this story broke, I was among the first to point out that the BATFE and DOJ explanation of the program was nonsense. I believed from the beginning that the intention of political appointees in the DOJ was to create a crisis to exploit for further gun control. But I was skeptical of the suggestions by some that they would actually fund the illegal purchases with taxpayer dollars. That was just too much.

Boy, was I wrong. Not just taxpayer dollars, but multiple agencies, Homeland Security, and now the State Department appear to be involved in not just one program, but multiple programs funneling not just civilian firearms but military-grade weaponry.

I’m beginning to think that the scale of the corruption is so vast that with some determined stonewalling by Obama and his tools it won’t be possible to unwind it before the next election. It is just too big.

I’ve never seen a president throw off so many jaw-dropping scandals and controversies like this guy. Why Is That??

leftnomore on July 22, 2011 at 5:43 PM

1. He is the first black president. It does not matter what he does as long as he is not empeached, which the government fears will result in highly destructive race riots and put the nation back where it was decades past.

2. Unions. More correctly the socialist and communist orgainzing of unions to push their agenda. They have shown the nation in Wisconsin how destructive they can be, and Obama is their president and one hope to expand their socialist goals and rule of the nation.

3. Socialist and Communist. They have been pushing for nationalized healthcare since 1949 when America rejected the socialist program. Britian did not and we see a disarmed nation where it is best not to get seriously sick or have a cavity, and worse when your considered too expensive to treat.

Obama was their American Dream who’s main job was to get elected and sign the healthcare bill, along with a few selected socialist bills. His job is done for this term. As he stated his job now is to get re-elected and once he has done that, his job is done.

Communism is the government of choice for the elite powerful and corporations who find it easier to deal with government officials than to answer to the public. There are few unknowns and few problems that cannot be negociated away with a bribe.

To achieve communism and conrol the people, there must be a time of socialism that will redistribute the wealth and compel the people to accept government control over their lives. Socialism also has to destroy the economy so that communism will be accepted as the best solution. In otherwords socialism has to fail to succeed.

If Obama is removed from office for any reason in this term, everything they have worked for will probably fail. There are too many powerful interest to allow that to happen, no matter how compelling the situtaion is to empeach. They know that after Obama, there will not be another chance for decades.

The election is the next and last hurtle they have to make to gain control. As Obama said, his job is to get re-elected and once he has done that, his job is done.

Why hasn’t Mexico gone to the United Nations and demanded that an investigation be done, led by the UN?…
slickwillie2001 on July 22, 2011 at 7:44 PM

The UN is in the later stages of the development of the Small Arms Trade Treaty (also called the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). Started in 2003, it will come up for formalization in 2012, for the first time without US objection.

This sort of investigation would likely screw up the delicate UN negotiations because of US government involvement. So I suspect that’s why they’re laying low, working for the passage of the ATT.

eeyore on July 22, 2011 at 8:18 PM

eeyore on July 22, 2011 at 8:18 PM

Good point there. So they arm Mexican narcoterrorists to spin up support for the arms treaty –just as they run guns across the border to gin up votes for new gun legislation in the USA. In the end, the UN arms treaty will impact Americans in the USA as well.

I see the connection now.

slickwillie2001 on July 22, 2011 at 8:26 PM

I don’t think this is about gun control, even though they might like to use that excuse at this point. I think he wants to arm Marxist revolutions in Latin America. The only time I have really seen Obama upset is when the Marxist Zelaya was thrown out by the government of Honduras. That is not supposed to happen on Obama’s watch. He is supposed to deliver the big fish and losing the little fish that have already been counted among the family of global communists is not acceptable and wouldn’t have happened if the communists in Honduras had had a few good guns and grenades, and he seethes about that everyday.

Also, if the drug cartels can force the Mexican government to give them carte blanche’ to operate- or even overthrow it and replace it with a “narco-friendly” puppet regime’- the flow of drugs north goes from a flood to a torrent.

At which point Obama calls for legalization in the name of “peace and justice”. Thereby fulfilling a long standing pipe (or maybe bong) dream of the American far left.

As for President Calderon’, he will do or say whatever Obama wants, as we have already seen. To keep the U.S. aid money coming, because it’s all that stands between Mexico’s economy and total collapse, and his government and being thrown out of power. So don’t expect him to call for an investigation of Holder, Obama & Co. anytime soon.

In many ways, the rhetoric of La Raza, etc., is a close parallel of the PLO, Hamas, etc., being based on a delusional version of “history” and heavily tinged with racism. The “Stolen Territories” meme’ and the “Palestine” one are very much alike. And both allow “enlightened” types to hate America, Israel, etc., while telling themselves it’s because of their “greater social consciousness”, thus letting them feel good about themselves in the process.

So it would not surprise me to find “progressives” in general, and Obama in particular, being as eager to see the “Stolen Territories” be annexed by Mexico as they are to see Israel erased from the map of the MidEast.

I’m still trying to decide whether their problem is incredible stupidity- or a yen for bloodshed and destruction that they can sit back and watch on CNN like Roman patricians in the Coliseum.
