Breaking: Explosion hits government offices in Oslo; Update: Bomb confirmed, say police; Update: AQ group takes credit?

posted at 10:36 am on July 22, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

A “huge explosion” has hit Norway’s government headquarters in Oslo.  According to the Associated Press, injuries have been confirmed, but no deaths at the moment, and the Prime Minister seems to be safe:

A loud explosion shattered windows Friday at the government headquarters inOslo which includes the prime minister’s office, injuring several people.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg is safe, government spokeswoman Camilla Ryste told The Associated Press.

Witness Ole Tommy Pedersen was standing at a bus stop about 100 meters (yards) from the high-rise at around 3:30 p.m. (1330GMT) when he saw the blast shatter almost all windows of the 20-floor highrise. He said a cloud of smoke is billowing from the bottom floors.

The building also houses offices of leading Norwegian media outlets.  It’s not clear what happened yet, let alone who was targeted and why (or even if, as this could have been an accident), but a blast that blows out windows all through a 20-story building had to be pretty powerful.  If everyone survived it, it would be almost miraculous.

We’ll keep an eye out for updates.  So far, CNN hasn’t covered it, and the wire services haven’t had much more to say than what’s above.

Update: Aftenposten strongly hints that this was a bomb, although in the same report it says that the cause had not yet been determined. They also have this short video of the aftermath:

Whatever it was, it was big. NRK picks up on the Aftenposten report to say that there may be more bombs in the building (Google translated the Norwegian):

Several unexploded bombs

- You can not go through here, because there are still two bombs we do not know where is, police on site to Aftenposten.no reporters.

NRK.no do not know anything more about the circumstances of these bombs.

In Akersgata are many people looking [through the] government quarter. Glass doors are blown away. Police and fire departments are looking for casualties in the area.

Update II: From the AP at the original link, a potential motive:

The blast comes as the Scandinavian country has grappled with a series of homegrown terror plots linked to al-Qaida, and six years after an uproar over cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in neighboring Denmark.

Last week, a Norwegian prosecutor filed terror charges against an Iraqi-born cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he’s deported from the Nordic country.

The indictment centered on statements that Mullah Krekar — the founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam — made to various media,
including American network NBC.

Update II: AP now says one confirmed dead. They also note a “blackened car lying on its side amid the debris,” which could indicate a powerful car-bomb blast.

Update III: Reuters reports that police confirm that the explosion was a bomb, and that there are now two confirmed dead from it.

Update IV: There has now been a shooting at a Norwegian youth camp that wounded five people that the media reports may be linked to the bomb attack. Sounds a little like a Mumbai scenario might be unfolding, and the web site Jihadica says that an al-Qaeda-affiliated website has a claim of responsibility from a group named Helpers of Global Jihad, via Poor Richard’s News.

callingallcomets on July 22, 2011 at 2:16 PM

OK everyone. Lets get and stay serious. People have been killed by Muslims. We need to:

1. Show sorrow
2. Be shocked
3. Make like this is the first time, and out of character for Islam.
4. Make no disparaging comments concerning minorities.

If we don’t, some fellow commenters (who obviously are required to read each and every comment) may be offended.

I lived in the UK when the government was run by the unions and know what it is like. I worked for the party which unwound that mess. I also spent expended time in Israel which is also socialist. You are the one saying socialists and social democrats are in league with islamo-fascists. Also worth pointing out that the youth camp that was attacked was run by the local Labor Party which makes your assertion that they have the same agenda all the more unseemly.

lexhamfox on July 22, 2011 at 3:14 PM

socialists as I experienced it in Eastern Europe is in a league with islamo-fascism, no doubt about it…they both kill and repress people in the name of ideology, it couldn’t exist and justify itself otherwise…I was a child so I do not have memories of people killed by the regime, but my parents had relatives and friends who died in the socialist prisons, simply because they were of a right/conservative persuasion, and got all of their property and wealth confiscated….this is the socialism that I was saying that you need to experience and you will forever after won’t want to have anything to do with it…and yes, I stand by my assertion that the end-goals of socialism are similar to those of islamo-fascists…while the forms experienced by you (the British labour and the European left in general, etc) might have been and still are milder, doesn’t mean that the end goal is not the same…it starts as mildly ‘humane’ (I remember they even called certain forms of European socailism – ‘socialism with human face’), and it ends up being simply vile and terrorizing people into submission…socialism is inherently wrong…

Now about the rumors that I penned most of Shakespeare’s stories….

whatcat on July 22, 2011 at 4:16 PM

Norwegian police have now confirmed that a bomb by an Al Qaeda-linked group caused an explosion at the government headquarters in Oslo, and reports are now coming in of a simultaneous attack at a youth camp. The body count is not yet in, but most of Norway must be asking “Why us? Haven’t we been sufficiently anti-Semitic and anti-Israel?”

Should boycotts prove insufficient to placate the Muslim world, Norway’s Socialist Left Party said that it was open to the idea of Norwegian military action against Israel: “The international community’s credibility in the confrontation with the Qaddafi regime is weakened when there is no reaction against other states in the region that commit assaults on civilians.”

Norwegians eagerness to appease their Muslim countrymen and the entire Islamic world has poured fire on the fuel of anti-Semitism. Life has become more difficult for the tiny population (about 2,000) of Jews in Oslo. Jewish children have been advised not to wear Stars of David or yarmulkes to avoid attacks. Kosher butchering is illegal. On two nights in January 2009, Norway’s Jews experienced a new “Kristallnacht” (Nazi night of broken glass) when hundreds of violent Muslims vandalized block after block while police stood by pathetically weak.

via Wikipedia:
“An estimated 2,754 civilians were killed in London by V-2 attacks with another 6,523 injured,[35] which is two people killed per V-2 rocket. However, this understates the potential of the V-2, since many rockets were misdirected and exploded harmlessly. Accuracy increased over the course of the war, particularly on batteries where Leitstrahl-Guide Beam apparatus was installed.[36] Missile strikes were often devastating, causing large numbers of deaths—160 killed and 108 seriously injured in one explosion on 25 November 1944 in mid-afternoon, striking a Woolworth’s department store in New Cross, south-east London.”

Sounds kinda interrupting to me.

According to the Telegraph ,under Norwegian law…the island shooter would receive only 21 years imprisonment for the horrendous act he committed today…..

The arrest by Norwegian police today of an Uzbek, a Uighur, and a Kurdish Iraqi – all described as being linked to Al Qaeda – shows the ability of jihadi groups to better organize abroad in a united front where race or nationality is ever less a determining factor, analysts say.

Should have been following the CSM. I was following The Telegraph which followed every “it’s a Norwegian!” lead, but has since gone dry on the arrests.

clnurnberg on July 22, 2011 at 4:27 PM

It is possible that the bombing and the shooting are unrelated, unlikely but possible.
bw222 on July 22, 2011 at 4:15 PM

I think it would be too much of a coincidence,bw222. Though, if Jihadists were not claiming credit I wouldn’t rule out a Columbine crazies type thing, but still connected.

I am European, you idiot…born and raised…and yes, I am born in Eastern Europe, emigrated with my family to France, as one of my parents is of French descent, and later on living in the UK and moved to the US recently …I have literally been in mostly every European country, when you probably never set foot outside your development or village more likely…

A Norwegian police statement described those arrested as “Person 1,” a Chinese Uighur that came to Norway in the late 1990s as a refugee who was granted citizenship in 2007. “Person 2” is an Iraqi Kurd arriving in the late 1990s and holding Norwegian permanent residence status. And “Person 3” is an Uzbek asylum seeker in the early 2000s who was later granted permanent residence. All three are in their 30s.

I ain’t no spring chicken myself, so you could be talkin’ bout me, lol. I feel old just explaining rabbit ears antenna to young uns – and waiting for the telly to start broadcasting to watch cartoons on Sat morns. we are in our sixties

but we still think young probably because we were both teachers and loved working with those cheerful, naive, irritating, unpredictable and endearing creatures called adolescents. I am an Englishman living in Sussex

OK since I’m not getting an explanation for being 14 in 1955, being born in 1940 and the above in light of statements that a college education was interrupted during WWII, I am prepared to call BS.

Where does that article show that it’s been confirmed the attack was AQ linked? In fact the article they link to as “proof” is dated July 8, obviously nothing to do with today’s attack. As of yet, there is absolutely no confirmation that the attacks are Islamic linked, just that the shooter was blond and Norwegian. I’m as likely as the next man to believe that this has Islam written all over it, but it’s just sloppy journalism at this stage to say that it’s been “confirmed” when it hasn’t. It still could be a lone nutjob, we don’t know.

Goes to proof that misc organized Muslims had a wont for actions exactly like today’s – bombings, massive carnage. I suspect such groups have not renounced Jihad and disbanded since the article.

It still could be a lone nutjob, we don’t know.
Sharke on July 22, 2011 at 4:39 PM

May be, but it’s a lotta carnage for one guy to accomplish. But then again it’s Norway – little to no security or ability to handle much beyond a bank robbery.

whatcat on July 22, 2011 at 4:47 PM

OK everyone. Lets get and stay serious. People have been killed by Muslims. We need to:

1. Show sorrow
2. Be shocked
3. Make like this is the first time, and out of character for Islam.
4. Make no disparaging comments concerning minorities.

If we don’t, some fellow commenters (who obviously are required to read each and every comment) may be offended.

BobMbx on July 22, 2011 at 2:29 PM

****
Yes, Bob, sorrow and shock. But it is characteristic of Islam… not a religion of love or peace. Murder is the name of the game… Period…

This looks more and more like domestic terrorism. The first person arrested is a Norwegian.

this is from CNN:

‘One thing we know is that the intelligence agencies in Norway and Sweden and Denmark have been on the highest state of alert for the last nine months. They’ve been looking at these terrorist chatter. Now, they’re going to pour much more resources into that – who’s involved, which mosques may have been basis for militancy, for example…’
