Breaking: Explosion hits government offices in Oslo; Update: Bomb confirmed, say police; Update: AQ group takes credit?

posted at 10:36 am on July 22, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

A “huge explosion” has hit Norway’s government headquarters in Oslo.  According to the Associated Press, injuries have been confirmed, but no deaths at the moment, and the Prime Minister seems to be safe:

A loud explosion shattered windows Friday at the government headquarters inOslo which includes the prime minister’s office, injuring several people.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg is safe, government spokeswoman Camilla Ryste told The Associated Press.

Witness Ole Tommy Pedersen was standing at a bus stop about 100 meters (yards) from the high-rise at around 3:30 p.m. (1330GMT) when he saw the blast shatter almost all windows of the 20-floor highrise. He said a cloud of smoke is billowing from the bottom floors.

The building also houses offices of leading Norwegian media outlets.  It’s not clear what happened yet, let alone who was targeted and why (or even if, as this could have been an accident), but a blast that blows out windows all through a 20-story building had to be pretty powerful.  If everyone survived it, it would be almost miraculous.

We’ll keep an eye out for updates.  So far, CNN hasn’t covered it, and the wire services haven’t had much more to say than what’s above.

Update: Aftenposten strongly hints that this was a bomb, although in the same report it says that the cause had not yet been determined. They also have this short video of the aftermath:

Whatever it was, it was big. NRK picks up on the Aftenposten report to say that there may be more bombs in the building (Google translated the Norwegian):

Several unexploded bombs

- You can not go through here, because there are still two bombs we do not know where is, police on site to Aftenposten.no reporters.

NRK.no do not know anything more about the circumstances of these bombs.

In Akersgata are many people looking [through the] government quarter. Glass doors are blown away. Police and fire departments are looking for casualties in the area.

Update II: From the AP at the original link, a potential motive:

The blast comes as the Scandinavian country has grappled with a series of homegrown terror plots linked to al-Qaida, and six years after an uproar over cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in neighboring Denmark.

Last week, a Norwegian prosecutor filed terror charges against an Iraqi-born cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he’s deported from the Nordic country.

The indictment centered on statements that Mullah Krekar — the founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam — made to various media,
including American network NBC.

Update II: AP now says one confirmed dead. They also note a “blackened car lying on its side amid the debris,” which could indicate a powerful car-bomb blast.

Update III: Reuters reports that police confirm that the explosion was a bomb, and that there are now two confirmed dead from it.

Update IV: There has now been a shooting at a Norwegian youth camp that wounded five people that the media reports may be linked to the bomb attack. Sounds a little like a Mumbai scenario might be unfolding, and the web site Jihadica says that an al-Qaeda-affiliated website has a claim of responsibility from a group named Helpers of Global Jihad, via Poor Richard’s News.

How could police evacuate ppl/kids who are hiding from shooter/s dressed as police? And can you imagine Norwegian anti-terror police? Oy. Probably Sensitivity/”Courageous Restraint” trained.

It’s an island in the Oslo fjord, quite far from Oslo itself. More than 700 attended the camp, some tried to swim to the mainland (about 5 miles, I think). Latest report I heard was 4 people killed in that attack. Just awful.

It’s a political (socialist) youth camp, i.e. an indoctrination center. Norway’s PM was supposed to speak there sometime this week, if not today.

The Workers’ Youth League (Bokmål: Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking, Nynorsk: Arbeidaranes Ungdomsfylking, or AUF) is the youth organization affiliated with the Norwegian Labour Party.

AUF was formed in April 1927, following the merger of Left Communist Youth League and Socialist Youth League of Norway. Its ideology is social democracy and democratic socialism. The current leader is Eskil Pedersen. Many former leading figures in AUF have gone on to serve in significant positions in government, such as the incumbent Prime Minister of Norway, Jens Stoltenberg.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workers%27_Youth_League_%28Norway%29

@sandee, if you’re goal is to launch a terrorist attack on Norway and especially the Norwegian government, it makes a lot of sense to target the youth camp.

MeatHeadinCA on July 22, 2011 at 1:11 PM

I guess it was a soft target. I went to Drudge and it seems the Prime Minister wasn’t there. He was supposed to speak at some point in the week.

17.19 Police in Norway are also now dealing with a gunman shooting at people in a political youth camp on Utoya Island. Utoya Island is roughly 20 miles north-west of Oslo. Police reports suggest that a man disguised as a police officer began opening fire.

17.28 Sky News is reporting that people are apparently swimming of Utoya Island to try and get to safety.

6-700 youths aged 14-25 attending camp on island of Utøya. Eyewitness on nearby shore reports hearing “many, many, many” gunshots

17.33 People are reportedly phoning from Utoya saying they are benig shot at. Multiple ambulances being sent to the site. The alleged shooter was dressed as a police officer. He travelled on a boat to the island in the uniform and when he arrived he started shooting with a handgun, according to reports. Unconfirmed reports of four dead.

This may account for the shooter at the Utoya Youth Camp

Prime Minister Mr Stoltenberg was due to appear at the meeting on Utoya Island. The BBC has been told that Mr Jens Stoltenberg was in fact due to speak tomorrow. Former prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland was the key speaker today.

This is true. But I suspect people will demand changes after this. Unlike Sweden, Norway had a fairly strict immigration laws, but accepted a several thousand per year as “refugees”). Of course, when the entire population is just a little over 4 million, this adds up. Almost all of the people in Norwegian jails are of foreign origin.

Will McCants now says that Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami (Helpers of Global Jihad) seem to make a claim of responsibility. They claim it is in response to the occupation of Afghanistan and insults to the Prophet Mohammed. It has come via Shmukh, an elite jihadi forum

and ABSOLUTELY nothing interesting ever happens on Oslo….this must be the first ‘interesting’ thing there in probably 200 years…too bad it had to be a tragic-interesting one…

jimver on July 22, 2011 at 1:45 PM

Apart from the Nazi invasion in May 1940 and the activities of the Norwegian resistance…..

NRK.no (Google Translation)

Headline:
More young people shot at Utøya – man arrested

was dressed as a policeman when he came to the island. We have great reason to believe that the shooting has a connection with the explosion in Oslo earlier today, says Sem-Jacobsen.
- It’s a political summer camp held there

More critically injured

Police have not yet know how many were injured after they should have shot wildly around him. Witnesses told NRK that between five and to persons to be killed, but this is not confirmed.

NRK can just before 19.30 learn that at least two girls are taken away from the place with critical injuries.

So far, more than 20 ambulances and four air ambulances sent to Utøya. Ten of these were requisitioned from London just after the clock 19

- More weapons
A witness said that it was used both shotguns, handguns and automatic weapons.

Sounds to me like a Mumbai style shooting where heavily armed individuals with plenty of ammunition go in with the intention of killing as many as possible. It is one of the newer Al-Qaeda MOs. Also this seems to a simultaneous multiple attack another favorite of Al-Qaeda

that and there will be a rehabilitation program to re-integrate him in the Norvegian society, pay by ironically the taxpayers…including the parents of those young people killed today…oh, well, the irony of life, or is it really…

9.00 London-based Exclusive Analysis risk consultancy said the man in the Utoya incident apparently infiltrated the party gathering on the pretence that he had been sent by police as a security measure in the wake of the Oslo explosion.

Quote As such, it is likely he was ethnically Norwegian. This could indicate the involvement of a far-right group rather than an Islamist group, though it is also the case that the Labour Party would be a favourable target for Islamist groups due to its role in authorising Norwegian military deployments in Afghanistan.

but a socialist one??? these people (socialists that is)have pretty much the same agenda as the jihadists, maybe minus the violence…but if you ask me there’s a lot of convergence points in their ideologies…besides both socialists and jihadists are profoundly deranged or brain-damaged in some way or another…so why attack their own??

jimver on July 22, 2011 at 1:23 PM

That’s absurd. Social Democrats are not like Islamcists.

and how is that ‘interesting’..the Nazis invaded pretty much every important country in Europe…as for their resistance, please…I am European, and sick and tired of my own country men gloating about ‘la resistance’, when for the most part they forget Vichy and ‘les collabos’…same Resistance on Norway you’re talking about? You forgot to mention the history of anti-semitism in Norway…

7/7

Now, add 7/22 to the list.

Before long, there will be an attack anniversary on every day.

Until we take care of business.

Yeah, over the top – but you do realize that countries like Norway do not practice punishment, but rather rehabilitation?

have you ever lived in or visited a former Socialist country? 9of the ex-Soviet block, or otherwise?) no, I thought so…then you’d know that there’s not much of a difference between their agendas…

jimver on July 22, 2011 at 2:13 PM

Unlike Sweden, Norway had a fairly strict immigration laws, but accepted a several thousand per year as “refugees”). Of course, when the entire population is just a little over 4 million, this adds up.

It is like injecting cancer cells into your body. If you don’t inject as many, the result is still the same, it just takes longer for you to commit suicide.

Thanks for that – I have found the bulk of comments on this thread (making jokey comments, O/T comments re Debt Ceiling) pretty sickening considering at least 11 ppl killed and hundreds injured…

That only the government itself could pull off. It’s convenient that since Norway bans guns, the “terrorists” could get them into the country.
