Boehner walks out Update: Boehner Comments Video

posted at 6:12 pm on July 22, 2011 by Jazz Shaw

The president took to the bully pulpit on short notice shortly after 6 PM on a Friday to deliver yet another laundry list of things he had offered to the Republicans. Apparently John Boehner wasn’t hearing anything he could manage to get through the House GOP caucus and he walked away.

Obama: “We have run out of time. I told John Boehner, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Mitch McConnell that they need to be here at 11:00 tomorrow.”

“I expect them to have an answer as to how they expect to get this done in the next week.”

Boehner will take up talks over the weekend with Democratic leaders in Congress rather than the president. We’ll provide updates on this as the situation develops.

UPDATES:

Obama: “I’ve been left at the alter now a couple of times. [by Speaker Boehner]

“If [the GOP] can only demand massive cuts to Social Security and Medicare with no revenue on the table, it’s going to be pretty difficult for us to find a way to go.”

“I couldn’t get a phone call returned from Speaker Boehner.”

NOTE: We’ve requested a statement from the RNC. Will get that as soon as possible.

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell praises Boehner for “opposing the President’s call for higher taxes”

This just in.

House Speaker John Boehner has walked away from negotiations with President Obama over a deal to raise the debt limit.

“In the end, we couldn’t connect. Not because of different personalities, but because of different visions for our country,” Boehner said in a letter to colleagues. He said Mr. Obama ” is emphatic that taxes have to be raised” and “adamant that we cannot make fundamental changes to our entitlement programs.”

“For these reasons, I have decided to end discussions with the White House and begin conversations with the leaders of the Senate in an effort to find a path forward,” he said. (Read the letter here)

Obama: “I am less confident that [Republicans] are willing to step up to the plate and do what is required to do.”

Some conclusions: The president looked in an absolute snit when he took to the podium. It’s difficult to imagine that this was carefully prepared text. His “solution” at this point is to call congressional leaders back to the talks in the morning and toss it into their laps. Considering that Pelosi and Reid are already more angry than he would like at the entitlement cuts he was trying to put on the table, where will that get them?

UPDATE: From the Speaker:

In the end, we couldn’t connect. Not because of different personalities, but because of different visions for our country. The president is emphatic that taxes have to be raised. As a former small businessman, I know tax increases destroy jobs.

The president is adamant that we cannot make fundamental changes to our entitlement programs. As the father of two daughters, I know these programs won’t be there for their generation unless significant action is taken now.

Sounds like Boehner is sticking to his guns, contrary to rumors in the New York Times that he was getting ready to fold his tent and go home.

UPDATE: From Grover Norquist.

“The deal all along was that if the president wanted to raise the debt ceiling by $2.5T he would have to come up with $2.5T in cuts without a tax increase. That didn’t happen.”

Speaker Boehner will be holding a presser shortly to update everyone on tonight’s developments. As soon as we have the text it will be posted here.

Boehner: (This is an abbreviated version of the full comments the Speaker will deliver)

No one wants to default on the full faith and credit of the United States and I have confidence that we will not.

The White House moved the goal posts. They demanded $400B more in taxes on the American people. And they refused to get serious on the issue of cutting taxes and protecting the best interests of the people of the United States.

This is a serious debate. It’s a debate about jobs, the economy, and the future of our country. Until recently, the president was demanding we increase the debt limit with no strings attached. I immediately responded and said that the American people would not tolerate this without cuts which exceeded the increase in the debt limit, without taxes, and without protecting the future of the people of the United States.

FYI, this wasn’t some canned speech for Boehner they could set up in advance. He’s firing largely from the gut and, if I might say, handling it with a tremendous deal of decorum.

Also, in response to a couple of comments, I’ll try to clean up the text this evening but I was pasting things in and typing pretty fast.

More coverage of Boehner’s comments:

“The White House moved the goalpost,” Boehner said in a news conference, claiming that the talks broke down when the White House demanded an additional $400 billion in new revenues to the $800 billion that was agreed upon, “which was going to be nothing more than a tax increase on the American people.”

Boehner also said, “They refused to get serious about cutting spending and making the tough choices that are facing our country on entitlement reform.”

In a hastily arranged news conference in the White House briefing room before Boehner spoke to reporters, a visibly irritated Obama said that “it’s hard to understand why Speaker Boehner would walk away from this deal.”

“This was an extraordinarily fair deal,” he said, explaining that the White House offered more than $1 trillion in cuts to discretionary spending, both domestic and defense and $650 billion in cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security in exchange for $1.2 trillion in new revenues.

After informing the president in a phone call of his decision to walk away, Boehner sent a letter to lawmakers saying, “In the end, we couldn’t connect. Not because of different personalities, but because of different visions for our country.”

Obama’s CLINTON dreams in a HOOVER world.

Let the name of Obama be stricken from every book and tablet, stricken from all pylons and obelisks, stricken from every monument of the USA. Let the name of Obama be unheard and unspoken, erased from the memory of men for all time.

Think of all that free ad material for 2012. Imagine America – running for office is the first Black president in history, crying and throwing a tantrum because he can’t have Daddy’s empty wallet to play with anymore.

aren’t the House members up at the WH at the summons of Dear Leader right now? The NYT has quoted King B-rock as saying that they ‘owe him an explanation’ on how we are to avoid default. I wonder how that is going over.

bluffs.

What struck me was how the reporter who asked Obama if he would make sure that SS checks would go out didn’t press him on the issue when he filibustered it for 3 minutes. That and the arrogance of him summoning the house and senate leaders like he is the King of the realm.

Why is Boehner even still meeting with Obama and the Dems? The House passed a bill – they did their part. It is now up to the Senate and they tabled the bill. They act like no bill was passed in the house. Go home for the weekend, Boehner, and let O stew in this mess. The more he talks, the worse he looks.

silvernana on July 23, 2011 at 11:37 AM

Republicans, on the Sunday talk shows, must state that agreeing to any debt-ceiling increase is a compromise, a fundamental compromise. The Republicans need some compromise from the democrats in return, which are real and immediate spending cuts.

GaltBlvnAtty on July 23, 2011 at 11:48 AM

I’d love to be a fly on the wall at this meeting today.

Obummer: So, how are we going to fix this?
Boehner: We’re waiting to hear your play, we’ve already passed ours.
Obummer: But there’s no tax increases in yours.
Boehner: Exactly.
Obummer: Well … but … damn it … I want taxes … more taxes
Boehner: No.
Obummer: (Crying) I want more taxes … must have more taxes
Boehner: No.
Obummer: Waaaaaahhhhhh

This is actually a great point. Why not just show up with the budget passed by the House, slide it across the table and say “Here ya go”.

Then leave.

Obama is in a very threatining situation for a narcissist who must maintain his own concept of reality in a world of reality that is different from his. Just ask those 80% of Americans who want him to rasie their taxes.

He needed three results from this crises; the extention of his ability to borrow; the establishment that he is a leader rather than one who leads from behind, and the possibility to spin the debt legistlation as a budget.

He is not doing well on any of the goals because the Republicans are being controlled by those they represent, mainly the elusive conservative Tea Party.

It is now even worse that Boehner has declared him as less than useful in the negociations and left him on the sideline.

Obama is down to tossing his leadership to his congressional democrats with orders to bring him legistlation he would sign by any means they need to get it done.

I love it! I have to say, I’m extremely disappointed that JB went to that meeting. A better response would have been when asked if he would go is to say, 1) The legislative and the executive are equal branches. The legislative does not summon the executive, nor does the executive summon the legislative. 2) The House has presented and passed a budget and CC&B, whereas the Senate has not produced a budget in over 800 days, and they just voted down CC&B. The Senate is now on recess for the weekend during this alleged crisis. Until the Senate produces a budget, our work here is done. I hope the President enjoys his meeting with himself.

Hey, a girl can dream, can’t she?

And that’s just the beginning. Over at Townhall.com it seems that there is indication that Boehner has caved, and not only caved but is in a hysterical panic, ordering that the Republican caucus get it done within 24 hours.

Did you read the article – he laid out his reasoning pretty straight forward.

Did you also read he’s going for something similar to CCB? Of course not – because that would mean you have to give him credit for something instead of blaming him for stuff he hasn’t done or may never do.

What are you talking about? Cut, Cap and Balance is already done, it doesn’t need to be done again within 24 hours. Unless the Democrats have released a plan or CCB has been voted on in the Senate there is nothing else for Boehner to do, he should pack up and head home right now and stop digging.

FloatingRock on July 23, 2011 at 7:35 PM

Check this excerpt out from The Hill, following today’s meeting with ObaMao:

The White House did issue the legislators one demand: Obama again dug in on refusing to sign a short-term deal.

“The president restated his opposition to a short-term extension of the debt ceiling, explaining that a short-term extension could cause our country’s credit rating to be downgraded, causing harm to our economy and causing every American to pay higher credit cards rates and more for home and car loans,” Carney said.

On the timeframe for a deal, the Democratic leaders back the president.

“I want to reaffirm my statement from last night. I will not support any short-term agreement, and neither will President Obama nor Leader Pelosi,” Reid said in a statement. “We seek an extension of the debt ceiling through at least the end of 2012. We will not send a message of uncertainty to the world.”

And the Prez, along with his Dem weasel enablers, is not playing politics with our credit-worthiness? How about a long-term budget plan, Reid? Or do you need more than 800-plus days to demonstrate what kind of message you are sending to the world?

He wants it done before the Asian markets open at 2pm on Sunday, because they are expected to plummet on the shenanigans from Friday. S&P said they could downgrade us anytime before Aug 2. The earliest time for that would be Monday morning. He is not caving he is trying to do a short term deal along the lines of CCB. He is going over the WH. Unfortunately Harry Reid has said NO short term deal. Let’s see if all of the Senators go along if the Asian markets tank.

What I fail to see is why Boehner has to keep going back to the House to hammer out any kind of offer. The media put the onus on him when to anyone paying attention, ObaMao, Reid, and Pelosi are insisting on a debt-limit extension to the end of 2012. The political posturing of this Dem intransigence is so obvious. Worry about our creditworthiness appears to be the furthest concern on their minds.

The nonsense that Carney spews in that Hill link I posted that a short-term extension threatens to raise interest rates on cars or homes is nonsense. Why would a credit agency maintain our AAA rating if we are going deeper and deeper into debt with our continuously maintaining promiscuously expensive social programs? Aren’t all of these agencies saying that we have to cut our debt, not expand it?

Obama has sealed his own fate:

Obama will be irrelevant for the remainder of his term.

Sarah Palin has declared him a lame duck. Boehner has now said there is no point in “negotiating” with him. Pelosi is going home, and Reid is backing away.

And court cases involving TX and AZ have underscored states rights and pushed back federal intrusion.

Pretty soon, Obama will be reduced to spending all his time doing what he is best* at: playing golf.
