Debbie Wasserman Schultz dismisses Allen West’s searing e-mail

In case you missed the original story, which we ran in Headlines last night, here’s the background. Yesterday, after Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz delivered a benign-for-her-but-still-inaccurate floor speech (“boilerplate Democratic rhetoric about Republicans killing Grandma for Big Oil,” as The Daily Caller’s Jim Treacher put it), fellow Floridian Rep. Allen West sent her a scathing e-mail.

In the speech, Wasserman Schultz singled out West (although, in cowardly fashion, not by name and only after West left the floor) for his support of “Cut, Cap and Balance,” which Wasserman Schultz alleges would balance the budget on the backs of seniors. West boldly responded straight to Wasserman Schultz:

Look, Debbie, I understand that after I departed the House floor you directed your floor speech comments directly towards me. Let me make myself perfectly clear, you want a personal fight, I am happy to oblige. You are the most vile, unprofessional, and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up. Focus on your own congressional district!

I am bringing your actions today to our Majority Leader and Majority Whip and from this time forward, understand that I shall defend myself forthright against your heinous characterless behavior……which dates back to the disgusting protest you ordered at my campaign hqs, October 2010 in Deerfield Beach.

You have proven repeatedly that you are not a Lady, therefore, shall not be afforded due respect from me!

Congressman Allen B West (R-FL)

Today, Wasserman Schultz’ spokesman dismissed the e-mail as political bluster.

“I don’t think that Congressman West is upset at the Congresswoman, but rather with the fact that she highlighted that he and other Republicans are once again trying to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, children and the middle class,” Jonathan Beeton, spokesman for Wasserman Schultz, said in an email. …

“As someone who lives in Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz’s Congressional district, Congressman West knows that we have hundreds of thousands of seniors in South Florida who have paid into Medicare throughout their lives and now rely on this program to keep them healthy and active,” Beeton said. “The truth hurts.”

That’s a response that is admirably consistent with the Congresswoman’s original floor speech — but equally wrong. Go ahead and check it out: The “Cut, Cap and Balance” bill makes no changes to Social Security or Medicare. Most of the cuts in the bill come from discretionary spending, anyway, but the bill specifies that the $35 billion cuts to mandatory spending would come from non-veterans, non-Social Security, non-Medicare spending. It’s also evident that West is upset at Wasserman Schultz herself.

Beeton’s last statement is surely true, though. The truth does hurt, which is why it had to have stung Wasserman Schultz a little bit that West said she’s not a lady. Watching the original speech, West’s response might seem like an overreaction. But in light of Wasserman Schultz’ past comments and actions — from the protest mentioned in West’s e-mail to her flat-out false claims about the economy to her criticisms of the GOP as anti-woman to her outrageous accusation that Republicans want to “literally” send the country back to the Jim Crow era (an accusation so unbelievable that it doesn’t even deserve a defensive response) — it’s hard to disagree with West when he writes, “You have proven repeatedly you are not a Lady.” Frankly, it’s refreshing that West would revive the word. A little lady-like graciousness would be more than welcome in Washington.

The one-way nature of “civility” criticisms has been pointed out repeatedly. Fine for Democrats to be rude, but not OK for Republicans. At least West isn’t letting Wasserman Schultz off the hook — and, importantly, he took his complaints to Debbie Downer herself instead of bad-mouthing her behind her back.

As West’s spokeswoman Angela Sachitano puts it, “The House floor — a place preserved for policy debate and the utmost professionalism — is not the place for political cheap shots.  It’s insulting to all Americans that Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz would use the House floor in such a manner. Congressman West contacted Congressman Wasserman-Schultz directly, as well as bipartisan House leadership to express his concern with her cowardly comments and the low level she has chosen to stoop to attack Congressman West. The constituents in Florida see Congressman West as a true leader and a man of principle while Congressman Wasserman-Schultz is once again viewed as politics as usual, and her true character sadly shown yesterday on the House floor.”

West’s honor and the truth about the legislation he supports are obviously important enough to him to defend even against the impertinent remarks of Obama’s “cute,” but increasingly not-credible DNC chairman — and that, to me, says something positive about West himself.

B) It’s against House rules to call out another Member of Congress by name. All comments are supposed to be directed towards the Speaker only.

I thought this was the case and I’m not even a member of the body. West should know this as well. It does kinda suck the wind out of the “cowardly because she didn’t single him out by name” sails.

Those three words sum up my feelings about Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

By now, you’ve probably heard the story. But I wanted you to hear it from me.

Yesterday, on the floor of the House, I publicly expressed my support for “Cut, Cap, and Balance” — the leading conservative proposal to help us get our spiraling debt and spending under control.

Once I left the floor, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (DNC Chair) — who it seems does little except act as an attack dog for the “vast left wing conspiracy” — attacked me personally for supporting the legislation.

It’s not a coincidence that she is the Chairwoman of the DNC and that the Democrats are making me target #1 for defeat.

In a discussion of grave importance to this nation’s future, she somehow finds time to try to score political points. And she doesn’t have the guts to do it to my face!

Episodes like these show that her agenda isn’t to improve the lives of Floridians or to stand on principle. She’s an attack dog for the liberal, progressive wing of the Democratic Party — plain and simple.

If she gets into it too deep now, Obama will replace her with someone less obnoxiously stupid – say, for instance, a cardboard cut-out of Joe Biden, detectable only because it never says anything stupid. Folks round here like the red meat, so I expect to be ridiculed, but I disagree with Tina’s take. While the context may be the ongoing encounters they have had over their political disagreements, Wasserman’s comments just weren’t that deep. West’s response sounds a little irrationally angry. He could have written a letter every bit as strong in its condemnation using far classier language. I could rewrite it and have it be just as hard hitting and still show the class he accuses her of not having. She’s not a lady because she politically disagrees with him, essentially? Its not smooth at all, his email is downright threatening in tone (shut the heck up? Or what?)and the optics of a military black man behaving that aggressively towards a cute little white woman? Stupid.

In my book, it lacks some class. Could have been better handled and just as hard hitting. Put what he said and what she said side by side, he sounds a little crazed. I’m not impressed with this performance.

West’s retorts directed at Wasserman-Schultz were not only appropriate but effective. She *may have been* “trolling” from the House floor with her irregular smears of Colonel West (few should doubt that she was) but this sort of smearing by the Left requires more of West’s retaliation.

I disagree that West has somehow provided fodder to the Left for more smearing, more of their “victimology” and fundraising based upon that — but, seriously, now, what does NOT provide the Left with such? What do they NOT use to engage in such?

I disagree with the tactic that we on the Not-Left should try this stoney-stare or walk-away stance with the likes of Wasserman-SChultz and others like her (that means, as to Barack Obama, Pelosi, Dick Schumer, Barney Frank, Harry Reid, the lot of them). They’re playing a very sick game for very high stakes and at this rate, I’m not supporting the “just walk away” stance when and as they do.

I think Debbie has trouble remembering which hat she has on. She was obviously wearing her DNC hat, when she made that floor speech, because she knows that Rep. West is representing his district and, in his district, it’s possible his constituents don’t want to bankrupt their children and grandchildren and Ms. Wasserman-Schultz, obviously doesn’t care about that.

Butler’s senator career is noted for an event at which he was not present. Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, during of his “Crime Against Kansas” speech in May 1856, denigrated South Carolina and abused Butler personally in terms considered to exceed parliamentary propriety. Sumner likened Butler to Don Quixote and said Butler: “has chosen a mistress to whom he has made his vows, and who, though ugly to others, is always lovely to him; though polluted in the sight of the world, is chaste in his sight. I mean the harlot, Slavery.” He attacked Butler ad hominem (“The senator touches nothing which he does not disfigure”) and mocked an aged infirmity (“With incoherent phrases discharged the loose expectoration of his speech”).

South Carolina Congressman Preston Brooks, a relative of Butler, considered this an attack on his family honor. Two days after the speech, Brooks brutally beat Sumner on the Senate floor with a gutta-percha cane while an accomplice, Laurence Keitt, brandished a pistol to prevent other senators from intervening, even as Sumner lay defenseless on the floor and Brooks continued to beat him. Butler later remarked that if present during the speech, he would have called Sumner to order, hoping to prevent further offense.
