Perry’s people active all over the place

posted at 3:30 pm on July 19, 2011 by Tina Korbe

As a presidential announcement from Texas Gov. Rick Perry looks ever more likely, his supporters and potential supporters have upped their activity in apparent preparation. Tonight in Austin, for example, a group of top Republican donors will meet to discuss whether they think Perry will be able to garner the support he needs across the country. CNN reports:

Some potential donors and bundlers for Texas Governor Rick Perry, if he mounts a presidential campaign, are meeting Tuesday in Austin, a Republican source confirms.

These money men have been talking to possible financial supporters around the country weighing how much support a candidacy would garner and will deliver their preliminary results during these meetings, the source told CNN.

The Austin American-Statesman reported four dozen potential donors were attending the session. Perry spokesman Mark Miner told CNN the governor is not attending the meetings but would have dinner with the donors Tuesday evening.

In New York, Perry’s pal, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, who has said he would consider a presidential bid himself, would, in the absence of that bid, likely cast his support for Perry, delivering crucial perks for the Texas governor:

The two men are good friends, and Perry was the only Republican governor in the country to endorse Giuliani’s presidential campaign in 2008. Payback could benefit Perry on a number of fronts – most notably fundraising – and would likely strengthen his status as a top-tier candidate if he decides to run.

“Rudy would be an awesome asset to any campaign,” said Perry’s longtime political svengali Dave Carney. “Of course candidates matter to voters, but folks of the mayor’s stature bring lot of value added to any effort.”

And, Giuliani himself has had kind words for a Perry bid, telling CNN’s Candy Crowley on Sunday that the Texas governor has “probably one of the strongest records of any governor in America,” even while noting that he has yet to make up his mind about running himself.

In Iowa, Americans for Rick Perry are building an ever-bigger presence to be prepared for the straw poll in early August.

Given that Perry has made money a litmus test of sorts for his decision, his answer to that call he’s heard should be increasingly clear to him. Which means little is left to GOP voters dulled by the current crop of candidates except to get excited whenever it’s official, as a sizable percentage have said they’re prepared to do.

McCain is better than Perry on border security…that pretty much says it all.

Perry leads the charge of the RINO brigade…

If Perry is the nominee, I leave POTUS blank…. No way I will assent to another term of Bush.

But he’s playing a little game of “look at me mommy, I have my big toe in the water” -then a few days later, “look at me mommy, I have my left foot-all the way up to my ankle in the water”…Don L on July 19, 2011 at 6:05 PM

We need a leader not another “smooth talking” politician who is transparently trying to milk his entrance into the arena in much the same manner as the messiah milked the foam pillars. If we’re going to ever change America(and the days on that are getting shorter)we need anything but more of the same-we need someone who acts like a statesman -not a slickster like Romney or a too-clever-by-far cookie cutter politician.
If there is one message that the polls are all telling us is that, America is over-tired of watching politicans act like politicians. Excusing their behavior as “that’s what politicians do” is merely guaranteeing failure.

Don L on July 19, 2011 at 7:25 PM

i’m sure Bachmann doesn’t want Perry in the race. Neither does Mitt. On the flip side Palin wants him in the race. Perry getting in the race means Palin has a much clearer path to the nomination. go Rick…..go rick he will be the biggest help to a Palin nomination so far this cycle.

This election is about the survival of our Nation. This election is about the defeat of Socialism in the US. This election is about exposing the Left and its mechanisms and machinations that go on auto-attack mode.

This election is about exposing the tiny minority of vocal leftists that seem to think they have the power to ‘transform’ us from a willing Nation of Builders into an unwilling Nation of Dependants.

That is the choice in 2012. This is nothing like the 2004 election. Make no mistake. O can raise 8 Billion dollars in cash; His ilk will not destroy this Nation.

And, the world at large, is watching.

Not to worry. 20 Dead people will be voting along with you. By way of ACORN. Which was defunded, then re-funded through Executive order and a re-naming, re-branding effort.

Rest assured. You will be defeated, and that is a good thing. You will realize it in the end.

“My mother may call me for dinner.”

“There’s a lot of different ways to be called,” Perry said Monday after signing a health-care bill at the Capitol. “My mother may call me for dinner. My friends may call me for something. There are people that are calling from all across this country into either me directly or to people that they know and saying man we wish you would consider doing this.”

A reporter asked whether that meant there were no religious overtones to his suggestion that he was being called.

“Oh no, no, no, no,” Perry said. “I don’t ever get confused about that I am a man of faith. I don’t make any apologies about my faithfulness. And the fact of the matter is I think anybody who goes through life without having that foundation of faith, I don’t know how they do it. I couldn’t. So the idea that, do I look for signs and do I look for good Scripture that tells me how to live my life? Absolutely I do that.”

The questions about the calling stemmed from a Des Moines Register story published Sunday in which Perry said, “I’m not ready to tell you that I’m ready to announce that I’m in. But I’m getting more and more comfortable every day that this is what I’ve been called to do. This is what America needs.”

Perry sounded slightly less committed to a presidential run Monday when he fielded questions from Texas reporters for the first time in six weeks.

“We’re going through a thoughtful, steady process of making a decision, and when we make that decision we’ll let you all know,” he said.

He sounds deliberate and thoughtful. Once he pulls the trigger on this thing, everything changes. In my opinion for the better.

Dr Evil on July 19, 2011 at 7:46 PM

Why would we pay attention to what Politico has to say? All signs point to his running no matter what Politico says. He took on Obama in his speech yesterday for lack of border security when he talked to law enforcement.

All those ceremonial signings are aimed at one thing — he is running. No way would he say his wife and children want him to run if he wasn’t running.

This time is being used to get everything in place including lining up donors so not to have to take federal matching funds in the general.

He has reopened his campaign site for press releases and donations which are coming out with speeches daily and for months after the election, I received a periodic email saying what was going on. Now I receive text messages daily usually several daily. No way is he not running.

No, RINO, you will be defeated, and you’ll have voted for your own disenfranchisement.

I’ll be defeated too, but at least I will not be guilty of voting for my own demise.

You RINO lovers are gonna learn the hard way. We conservatives are not gonna keep bailing you out every 4 years.

Hey, I would much rather have an uber conservative win the nomination…however I don’t see Reagan in the field. If you look at the field we do have so far…Bachman, I really like her, but too much negative baggage I think. Same goes for Palin, and I still say Palin is sitting out and teasing just to keep a lot of media attention off of the others in the field. Romney…eash…like I have said before may as well have voted for John F’n Kerry. Pawlenty, likeable guy, conservative credibility…but it appears at least at this point that he has had a spinectomy. Who else would you like to get in? Perry is so far,in my opinion, the least of the evils to choose from. Remember…nobody is going to meet all our expectations…unless Reagan or better yet Washington rises from the grave…and if that happens I think we’ll have bigger things to talk about than the election anyway!

Romney Obama debate will be a contest between the guy Obama who thinks he’s the smartest man in the room versus Romney the guy who IS the smartest man in the room.

Obama will need mutiple teleprompters and an earpiece to debate Romney.

sheryl on July 19, 2011 at 4:58 PM

Can’t imagine Governor Perry saying “Obama didn’t cause this recession, but he made it worse.” “I never said he made it worse!” “Yes, he DID make it worse? I never said I never said he made it worse.”

You mean, like this smart guy?

Rick Perry will be the GOP front-runner immediately after he announces his candidacy just given the fund-raising advantages inherent in being governor of America’s second-largest state. He also has successful tracks record of running an off-the-MSM’s-notice election campaign using social media and grass-roots activity (ask Kay Bailey Hutchinson), and shameless dropping of politically harmful ideas once he had gotten all the money he could from supporting those.

These smell mighty like “winner” to me. He might have the ego to be known as Governor “Good-Hair”, but he also knows how not to step on his Texas-size ****.

Not the way I see it. The end game on amnesty is disaster, and Perry knows it. He is a reasonable enough guy to handle it properly.
