Buddy Roemer announces POTUS bid (And an open thread for you)

posted at 6:26 pm on July 18, 2011 by Jazz Shaw

Well, every talking head on the planet has been telling us that the GOP field was “not settled yet.” We’ve also been assured that “Republican voters don’t like their choices.” You know how it is. You’re all waiting for that one perfect bowl of porridge: not too hot, not too cold. A mattress which is neither too soft nor too firm. Clearly that day has arrived.

No, we’re not talking about a barracuda or a Jersey Devil. It’s Buddy Roemer.

It’s official: Buddy Roemer will formally announce his presidential campaign Thursday from New Hampshire.

While the former Louisiana governor’s campaign has not set a location for the announcement, he’s scheduled to speak at Dartmouth College that afternoon as part of a national politics series.

“We’re ready to move forward,” said Roemer’s newly-minted campaign director, Carlos Sierra. “He’s one of the first candidates to file his exploratory committee, and now we’re one of the last, if not the last, to make it official.”

I’m sorry… not to pick nits here, but did you really hire somebody who said you might be the last person to enter the race? Were all the other dryers full at the laundry?

Were I not already busily engaged in handicapping tomorrow’s races for Snake Derby Magazine I’d probably get into this further, but this is one case on a Monday night when we should leave it to the Hot Air faithful and just paste in a few of your comments as updates to flesh things out before the end of the day. What say you? Is Buddy the vision across the desert so many of you have been waiting for?

A few UPDATES from comments:

It’s settled, we have our candidate. All the others can go back home. :)

There may have to be a new lowermost tier created for this hopeless endeavor.
Brian1972 on July 18, 2011 at 6:38 PM

Buddy is a good guy and certainly a private industry advocate, BUT…. He was a one term governor, in large due the oil bust in Louisiana during the mid 80′s, where the state had ridden a boom of tax receipts from oil & gas production. Additionally, he became somewhat of an envirowhacko while in the governor’s mansion.

Then he ended up losing to noted Klansman, David Duke and Edwin Edwards (vote for the crook it’s important).

When the comments are bigger news than the announcement, you know there’s a grassroots movement there in the waiting.
Or something.

The shocking thing about this is that there is a former Louisiana governor that’s not in prison.

I recently had to dump some out of code salad into the compost bin(at work. they were expiring the next day)and one of the salads was an Arugula/Spinach mix.
I tried the arugula. Not bad at all.
It tastes very onion-y.

But Perry will be…soon.

Going on two weeks with the same candidate, that’s a record for you. Check out Roemer. You might like hime better than Pawlenty, Cain, Perry.

Texas Spends More On Servicing Road Debt Than On Road Construction…!

“Conservative firebrand” Rick Perry’s policies is the singular reason that Texas will now be spending more on servicing road debt than on actual road projects.

For the first time in Texas’ history, the state budget is projected to spend more on debt service for roads than it will on new road construction.[20]

Jindal was one of the first to dare to criticize Mr. President and call him on his pitiful response to the gulf crisis. I will always remember and admire him for the efforts that he made to minimize the damage to his state while millions of gallons of oil soiled its shores. I’ll always remember Mr. President for showing a total lack of leadership when people were in desperate need of a leader. His involvement was pitiful and the GOP probably needs to bring that up over and over and over again if they want to dethrone him.

Juan Williams on Fox News says Rick Perry bridges gap between Tea Party and Establishment. Sounds good to me! Says he’s going to steal from both Bachmann and Romney.

Yes it is. And DS is Buddy’s campaign finance director. :)

2nd confirmation from solid conservative, far from naive, and no Johnny Come Lately, like most posters on threads. Perry be the man for real Texans. They’d rather not lose a conservative governor. Additionally, the way he is in public is no put on. He is exactly the same in private.

This is absolutely the funniest news to come along in quite a while. All this time our joking, for months now, has turned into a strange reality.

Sir Hawgs is probably dancing in the streets now that Buddy has joined the fray. I keed I keed.

Actually it was you DS that was the first to post the “You Go Buddy” on HA IIRC. How prescient of you DS. You nailed it.

That sky-writing idea I had over Iowa just might work. And a blimp Flashing “You Go Buddy” during this years super-bowl could change the course of history. :)

Right.

He is a religious gas bag in private just like in public prayer meetings.

Then he has the nerve to defeat the Supreme Court “Justice Bork” of Texas, and sign gerrymandered State Board Of Education redistricting plans that will decimate all the conservatives and their good work they did for restoring sanity in the school curriculum.

Buddy Roemer would be a much better president than Barack 0bama, and, should he be 0bama’s opponent, I would vote for him in a HEARTBEAT.

cane_loader on July 19, 2011 at 2:58 AM

I had to google him. Now I have to ask:

Why?

Probably a nice man, but I want the OTHER Governor of Lousianna to run. One day, I hope.

Elisa on July 18, 2011 at 9:11 PM

I hate to bust your bubble…but:

———–

If Bobby Jindal chooses to run, every scrap of his past will be dug up, duly vetted by respected media, and he will be found, in the “proper” court with “standing,” not to be a NATURAL-BORN CITIZEN, AND THUSLY TO BE INELIGIBLE TO THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT.

This is how it’s done in our country.

cane_loader on July 19, 2011 at 3:07 AM

Though I’ve posted it before, once again here is the footage I shot of Gov. Bobby Jindal in Lafayette, Louisiana last summer at the Rally for Economic Survival after the Zero shut down America’s Gulf of Mexico drilling.

Obama gave him a big “F-You” anyway, but I never tire of hearing Bobby take it straight to the president:

Comment of the week, IMO. For awhile I thought there might actually be some sanity after a bunch of the nuts dropped out. But they are now being replaced by others and it looks like a “clown car primary” is in the offing.

Uncle Sams Nephew on July 19, 2011 at 6:00 AM

Is he getting in to make Romney look acceptable?

What is this foolish, “not enough candidates” talk?

Putting another sardine in an overcrowded can doesn’t stop the stench.

I’ll wait for Sarah. No one dare tell a barracuda she stinks, without risking life and limb…er…fin.

She’s the real sardine and faux messiah predator! She’s just letting them wound themselves a lot more, and then, like all healthy predators, one big swoop and it’s over.

Don L on July 19, 2011 at 6:18 AM

Who?

It amazes me how there is always a couple “some guy” people in every election. Was he told that people really wanted him to run? That he had a chance?

Of course I have often thought about jumping into the race myself on at least 1 state’s ballot. But that is so I could introduce myself as “former Presidential candidate”. I wouldn’t even vote for myself.

jeffn21 on July 19, 2011 at 8:36 AM

MechEng5by5 on July 19, 2011 at 11:15 AM

The shocking thing about this is that there is a former Louisiana governor that’s not in prison.

All the cells are taken up by former Illinois governors. Four of our last 8 governors have now been convicted of felonies.

In all seriousness – there’s a distinct possibility that we could go to a GOP primary with no settled candidate, and that multiple ballots will be needed to select a winner. Of course, the MSM will then run multiple stories that the intra-party competition will have “damaged” the GOP candidate irreparably.
