Video: The new GOP movement in the Senate: Blocking spending bills until a budget is produced

posted at 8:37 pm on July 15, 2011 by Tina Korbe

Something highly exciting happened on the Senate floor yesterday. Ten different GOP senators took to the podium to say they’ll vote to block any and all spending bills until Senate Democrats agree to produce a budget. Better yet, they and 30 Republican colleagues backed up the talk by supporting Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) when he raised the appropriate point of order against a military appropriations bill (that passed the Republican House and has broad Republican support!) — ultimately demonstrating their ability to block the bill to underscore their fundamental seriousness about the law, which requires the Senate to produce a budget before it considers appropriations bills. Here, the best of the quotes in support of this new movement to withhold support for spending bills until Democrats sober up and produce a budget:

We Alabamians are proud of you, Sen. Sessions!

Sessions also stopped the first attempt at Shamnesty with the same procedures. Refused to agree to unanimous consent, and therefore gave the opposition time to plan a counterattack.

Wethal on July 15, 2011 at 8:46 PM

Stop the spending – he’s doing it right.

ajacksonian on July 15, 2011 at 8:47 PM

the law, which requires the Senate to produce a budget

Obviously, the law does not matter.

But good for them.

Aquateen Hungerforce on July 15, 2011 at 8:47 PM

That was an enjoyable 3+ minutes. It is a good step, better late than never.

GaltBlvnAtty on July 15, 2011 at 8:49 PM

Wow, where did the GOP suddenly find spines?

Laura Curtis on July 15, 2011 at 8:51 PM

I second that!

theaddora on July 15, 2011 at 8:51 PM

OT, but you’ve got to hear this side-by-side comparison of Jimmah Carter’s “Malaise speech” with Obama’s debt ceiling speeches. It’s stunning.

Rational Thought on July 15, 2011 at 8:54 PM

It’s about time the GOP started to show some guts.

kringeesmom on July 15, 2011 at 8:56 PM

Minority Leader Sessions. Has a nice ring to it.

Bugler on July 15, 2011 at 8:57 PM

Cutting spending won’t solve the problem, although it will help. Tax increases won’t solve the problem, and will only whet the Democrat’s lust for more spending. The only solution is to grow the economy and that’s what they should be focused on.

NNtrancer on July 15, 2011 at 8:58 PM

Great! Stay with it Senators; we’re with ya! And we’ll support your efforts.

Marco Rubio…!

… Sing it brother!!!

Seven Percent Solution on July 15, 2011 at 9:07 PM

There has to be some way to get people to understand that it is the Democrats that have no plan. Will this do it?

Warner Todd Huston on July 15, 2011 at 9:08 PM

I like Majority Leader Sessions better.

KSgop on July 15, 2011 at 9:05 PM

I do too, and if we could get a Minority Leader Sessions he’d have an excellent shot at a promotion.

This is a pretty good roll call of the reliable conservative and libertarian Senators; several new freshman. This is great. Go Rand et al.!

It’s about damn time.

SouthernGent on July 15, 2011 at 9:17 PM

Graham? McCain?

Graham? McCain?

SouthernGent on July 15, 2011 at 9:22 PM

Rhetorical? Sarcastic?

Firefly_76 on July 15, 2011 at 9:23 PM

Bravo – Point of Order, Harry. Choke on it.

Jimmy Doolittle on July 15, 2011 at 9:23 PM

Way to go guys – about damn time!

gophergirl on July 15, 2011 at 9:28 PM

Now, this is some political red meat. We know the vegetarian RDDBs will refuse to eat it, so the real question is, can the RINOs digest it well enough not to choke? They’ve been on milk and cookies for so long, they might not be able to handle it.

I LIKE Rubio’s enthusiasm and dare.

AnotherOpinion on July 15, 2011 at 9:45 PM

Good for Sessions for leading this effort, and for Rubio for having the best talking points.

Needed a little fixing.

So why all of sudden have the Republicans found religion?

rickyricardo on July 15, 2011 at 10:13 PM

If it weren’t for that damn humidity, I’d move to Alabama tomorrow (Reid is my Senator charlatan).

Oh, just remembered the skiing here in Reno-Tahoe area. Ski resorts were open July 4th (really!) because of record snowfall this year. Never mind.

rickyricardo on July 15, 2011 at 10:13 PM

I have the sick feeling they’re going to use the tried-and-true tactic of wrapping themselves in the flag and waving a Bible under the nose of conservatives…

And we’ll fall for the Same Old.

AGAIN.

Uncle Sams Nephew on July 15, 2011 at 10:29 PM

Sounds like our representatives are slowly “getting it.”

I hope my daily e-mails to both Senators + my Representative + any Republican leaders in the news have something to do with this.

And I REALLY hope that all my fellow HotAir bloggers are doing the same thing!!! HOLD THEIR FEET TO THE FIRE!!! (as well as other body parts if threats to the feet aren’t enough…)

landlines on July 16, 2011 at 12:01 AM

Marco Rubio FTW!

rockmom on July 16, 2011 at 8:36 AM

I think Sen. Sessions is most effective Senator we have. To me he sounds better that Rubio in this clip.

UncleZeb on July 16, 2011 at 9:14 AM

It’s about the jobs, stupid!
Create a million new taxpayers and problem solved!

odannyboy on July 16, 2011 at 9:16 AM

I don’t understand why if it is illegal to not have a budget, how do Dems get away with it?

HellCat on July 16, 2011 at 5:34 PM

Makes too much sense let alone being Constitutional. never gonna happen with this President.
