Bachmann raised just $4.2 million in second quarter

posted at 5:54 pm on July 15, 2011 by Allahpundit

Half that amount was raised in a mere 18 days after she formally declared her candidacy, but given her reputation as a fundraising juggernaut, the bottom-line number sure does look anemic next to Romney’s $18 million haul. At Commentary, Jonathan Tobin wonders if she’s ready for prime time:

Bachmann’s excuses for this showing will center on the fact that at the start of the quarter she barely had a campaign, let alone the sort of organization that would allow her to rake in the big bucks. Her Internet fundraising operation, key to a grass roots populist candidacy such as hers, so far lacks the sophistication and promotional efforts needed for her to harness the energy of enthusiastic Tea Party and conservative Christian backers…

Having lifted herself from the second tier to leading alternative to the frontrunner in just a few weeks, Bachmann no longer has the ability to fly below the radar. The congresswoman’s fast start has set high expectations that require her to do more than just skate by. If Bachmann’s performance in the Iowa straw poll in August or the next fundraising report again falls short of what we believe a first-tier candidate must do, her hopes will suffer.

Does anyone think she’ll fall short of a first-tier showing in the straw poll? My assumption’s been that, at worst, she’ll finish second. Bachmann’s also in an odd spot in that, even after her poll surge, no one’s sure how seriously to take her yet. She could bleed lots of support if Perry/Palin get in (which, in Perry’s case, sounds likely) — or, if they don’t, she might surge as tea partiers and social cons choose her as their undisputed standard-bearer. If Romney, Pawlenty, and Ron Paul do a solid job of organizing for the straw poll, Bachmann could finish surprisingly badly there and have to endure a “paper tiger” narrative that leaves would-be donors looking for an alternative. Or maybe she’ll destroy them all and suddenly attract big money as people start to view her as a legitimate threat. Point being, except for T-Paw, no one has as much riding on Ames as Bachmann does. It’s almost pointless to look at their respective balance sheets now since things will change dramatically next month one way or another. But if you do want to look at those sheets, here’s a line to chew on: Although T-Paw outraised her for the quarter (he took in $4.5 million), he had just $1.4 million in cash on hand at the start of July before the big push to Ames. Bachmann has more than $3.6 million, although it’s not clear right now how much of that is for the primary rather than the general. Presumably most of it is, which means Pawlenty’s already in the hole money-wise while he’s trying to catch up in the polls. (Speaking of being in the hole, a factoid from Matt Lewis: Gingrich’s campaign is more than a million dollars in debt — and half of that amount is due to chartering private planes.)

Lest you think Bachmann’s not serious about the nomination, here’s CNN’s report today about her leaving her church in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod last month before her official announcement. Per Lutheran tradition, WELS names the Papacy as the Antichrist; Bachmann, presumably fearing a Rev. Wright problem next year, decided to limit her exposure early, I guess. Undaunted, the left’s seized on an exciting new meme that gives them the chance to attack an ideological opponent while indulging in the sort of cheap jokes that they’ve otherwise derided for years: They think Bachmann’s husband, whose clinic aims to turn gays straight, is totally, totally gay himself. Can’t wait for the Obama attack ad.

Sarah Palin’s political action committee spent tens of thousands of dollars covering the costs of the former Alaska governor’s “One Nation” East Coast bus tour this spring — a trip that Palin (R) has repeatedly characterized as a “family vacation.”

Empty Theatre!!!: MSM Currently Brewing Up Phony ‘Undefeated’ Narrative
by John Nolte

***

One writer. One article. One screening. Apparently, what we used to consider anecdotal now equals news. And as a result you have a genuine media narrative being brewed with headlines intentionally written to create the perception that the “The Undefeated” is DOA — in the Republican stronghold of Orange Country, no less.

Translation: It’s over, Palinistas! Please form a single-file line to the right where all your hopes and dreams will be stripped and burned.

Except…

If you read the fine print…

“The Atlantic” writer is reporting on his experience at a midnight screening … on a Thursday night.

No.

Really.

Read the story again and you’ll see that the emptiness of a midnight screening on a work night is not only worthy of 950+ words and a wildly misleading headline, but also all these subsequent MSM stories filled with similar headlines.

Conor “Pee Wee Herman” Friedersdorf Exposes Himself To Female At Palin Film Showing

Interesting that worthless boy hack Conor with one N Friedersdorf once sold himself as of the Right to advance his writing career but can’t bring himself to write anything serious about the significant events playing out in Washington right now, let alone be critical of Obama. Of course, he was never going to make it on talent, or intellect. That’s been obvious since his initial colossal failure at Culture whatever it was.

When it comes to Hollywood, second rate actors and actresses sell themselves with more integrity than does this mutt Conor with one N. And now, he’s gone to the movies to see The Undefeated. I followed up with some research to see precisely what our little nut-less wonder did to write his hit piece.

So, this numb-nuts Friedersdorf, while visiting his grandparents, heads out at 12:45 AM on, technically speaking, an un-advertised first extremely early morning showing of The Undefeated to write a hit piece on it. And he does that while the nation is trillions in debt leading to the on going monumental debates and events playing out in DC, of which he can’t manage a single thought. What’s amazing is that the Atlantic would even take Conor with one N seriously. They must have been truly desperate to find a false flag conservative and alleged pundit.

idesign on July 15, 2011 at 7:28 PM

are you using Obama math?

Palin’s committee spent nearly $14,000 on the “bus wrap” that festooned the family’s tour bus with images of the Liberty Bell, Constitution and American flag. The committee spent $10,000 on “logistical trip consulting,” $3,600 to the bus driver and at least $7,000 on lodging.

The total for the trip is likely much more, because many bills came in after the June 30 filing deadline, Sarah PAC treasurer Tim Crawford said in an interview. In addition, many other expenses associated with the trip, such as photography, videography, Internet fundraising and airfare, are more difficult to account for. (One item in the report describes $6,999 paid to an air charter company called Republican Presidential Travel on June 9, at the tail end of “One Nation.”)

OMG…she used PAC funds to fund a trip that helped her raise $1.6 million in funds. Let’s see since the bus tour was the kick off of her fundraising. That means that $18,000 gave a ROI of about what $500,000-$1,000,000…..

That B movie actor served two terms a governor of CA-he didn’t resign halfway through his only term then star in his own reality show. Reagan’s celebrity happened BEFORE he became governor. Big difference.

SP is a good conservative but she’s not close to being a reagan…yet.

annoyinglittletwerp on July 15, 2011 at 9:25 PM

annoyinglittletwerp on July 15, 2011 at 9:25 PM

No difference whatsoever.

He was a celebrity.

This point I am making is to not make general statements, when each individual is in their own circumstance.

Palin and Reagan have a lot in common with each other.

She was inspired to get into public life by his example.

I’m sorry these things seem to irritate you so much that you cannot ever let a single Palin/Reagan comment go by unchallenged.

The fact is, she wants to continue Reagan’s legacy, because it doesn’t seem that many other Republicans do.

They use his name when it’s campaign time, but they don’t really mean it.

She really means it.

This is why people say things like “Sarah is the next Reagan”.

The amount of time served in office is really inconsequential to the comparison, yet this is the very first thing you always bring up when you feel compelled to shoot down anyone saying anything about Palin/Reagan parallels.

They exist in philosophy, as well as the natural talent to connect with people. Even Micheal Reagan said of Sarah Palin’s RNC speech (he was in the room) “Welcome Back, Dad.”

It is not the greatest crime of conservatism to point these things out, because they are true.

Many people see it, that is why it keeps coming up.

Another thing, those two terms Reagan served as Governor of California didn’t make a damn bit of difference to the Republican establishment or the liberal left at the time, did it?

Here is another parallel for you, when Reagan challenged Ford in 1976, there was much of the same kind of assault on his intellect and character and even mental stability as there has been on Palin these last few years.

It was Republicans doing the attacking.

The libs had their go at him later, when Carter’s political team were praying for Reagan to get the nomination because he would be the easiest to beat. He had no chance, too extreme, too rightwing, no educational pedigree, ect. ect. Any of that sound familiar to you?

Good Post.

Reagan was a celebrity (in the truest definition of the word) BEFORE he became governor.

Applying the same logic that celebrities should not hold public office would render Reagan ineligible to run for Governor of California IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Ergo the celebrity argument fails the logic test in this instance right out of the gate.

If Reagan’s celebrity happened BEFORE he became Governor why can’t celebrity occur BEFORE becoming president. Especially since the “celebrity” (a dubious claim) in question was already a Governor and ran on the last National ticket in the slot for VP.

And further, I reject the Notion that Palin is a mere celebrity simple because of ONE documentary about Life in Alaska that ran a for a few weeks. She wasn’t an actress. She is a political powerhouse and paid political commentator who helped swing the vote our way in 2010. She writes almost exclusively about Political topics (the Wall Street Journal doesn’t publish celebrity puff pieces) and has a PAC. She has no star on the walk of fame.

So these label games have a false premise right at the start of the whole bogus argument.

Certainly the left isn’t treating her as a mere celebrity. Tina Fey is a exclusively a celebrity; Palin is NOT.

Agreed. HatTip to DS.

The $4 million total came from $2 million raised in the last two and a half weeks, and $2 million transferred from her Congressional account. Her main rival at this stage, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, raised about $18 million for his campaign from April through June. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who is considered a contender despite staying out of the race so far, raised just $1.6 million in the first half of 2011.

I used quotes in bold so no one thinks I am infriging on anyone’s copyright. The devil is in the details.

Geochelone on July 15, 2011 at 10:18 PM

I think there is certainly a celebrity element to her now, but the main point is that was thrust upon a serious person who has done serious things.

I feel that it’s more of an advantage than a negative, since she can reach into parts of the culture other conservatives can’t really manage.

She could make conservatism cool, and some liberals know this that is why she must be poisoned and destroyed. They are the annointers of cool, and if they lose that, they could be screwed long term.

Many liberals to this day attribute Reagan’s success to his acting experience, and expert stagecraft by his handlers, rather than face the unpleasant truth that most of America agrees more with his ideology than theirs.

When you look at issues, Palin is right in American mainstream thought, with vast majorities agreeing with her already even if they don’t know it yet.

If they find out, she can do great things for us all.

It’s obvious you misunderstand me.

I worship no person on this Earth, and I find it a tad insulting you would make the implication.

I think Sarah Palin is the right person to save the Republican Party from itself and restore it to what Reagan began to make it, that’s the only salvation I’m talking about. Once that is in place, the new GOP can smash the left and restore our Nation.

It’s really as simple as that.

What you should try is to not be so condescending.

Brian1972 on July 15, 2011 at 10:51 PM

So in total; 4 out of five of your posts are empty, the fifth was another one liner. Not exactly something which serves as model example of effective argumentation. My two posts, (not this one) carried some information content which affords at least some stimulating discussion.

As soon as the level of criticism against Bachmann reaches ten percent of that directed against Palin for 2+ years I might honor your request. Until such time write your own software.

Thank You

And if you’d been paying attention the “poll dancing” thing has been going on between Port and I for about 4 days.

Knucklehead on July 15, 2011 at 11:16 PM

Dirst mention of Palin in the thread, from what I can tell (with my lack of sophisticated software, I could be wrong):

Bachmann is in it to win it. If Perry jumps in, he will be the game changer. If Palin jumps in, she will split votes with Bachmann and give Romney the win. But if both Perry and Palin get in then Perry will still win because no one takes Palin seriously anymore. Yes, Palinistas, look at the pols.

Which brings me to the winning ticket for 2012.

Perry/Bachmann 2012!!

Win, baby, win!!

I am not going to play your drama games. You can stew and argue all you want and say I am cultist who has “taken over” a thread “yourself [me] included”.

I have exactly two posts: neither was in any way an uneven handed a criticism of Bachmann.

One was not even about Bachmann at all but was a defense of the claim that Palin is a mere celebrity.

I have never criticized Bachmann unfairly; I rarely even talk about Bachmann and my two posts on this thread can hardly constitute a hijack.

I would put my record of fairness against yours any day of the week; especially in regard to hypocrisy.

So in essence your reply is reduced to calling me a cultist and a hypocrite.

Oh the irony and hypocrisy of the cult of Palinista’s.

If you have a hypothesis about the amount of smear directed at Palin versus Bachmann over these last two years then gather the data and present it.

No one is stopping you.

$4.2 Million is surprisingly low considering MB’s fund raising history. And for that total to include $2 Million transferred from her already raised House election is even more surprising to me…It’ll be interesting to see how this effects her her poll numbers/MSM tenor in the coming weeks. If I remember correctly, MB has much more ($10+ Million) left in her Congressional re-election campaign fund that she may be able to utilize going forward. If so, she’ll stay formidable in the near term…

On another note, I’d wager that the LSM is looking high and low for video of MB sitting in her former Church listening to a fire and brimstone sermon. Something they (LSM) worked overtime NOT to find in reference to the obamanation…

I’m not sure how strong MB’s numbers are, and how many contributors make up her quarterly take; however, I think as long as she’s raising money and able to stay in the race she brings something to the party. It would take a miracle for me, personally, to vote for her, but whether I agree with her on issues or not, I’m glad she’s in. I’m glad they’re all in. The more the merrier, I say.
