Breaking: Ron Paul won’t run for Congress in 2012

posted at 12:41 pm on July 12, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

The Daily Caller first noticed this message on Rep. Ron Paul’s Facebook page.  Instead of going for his 19th term in Congress while running for President, Paul will only focus on winning the Republican presidential nomination:

Big news! I have decided not to seek re-election for my House seat in 2012 and will focus all of my energy winning the Presidency. My hometown newspaper The Facts will be running the exclusive story very shortly.

Over at the hometown newspaper, Paul goes into a little more detail:

After serving almost 24 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Ron Paul told The Facts this morning he will not be seeking another term for the District 14 seat.

Paul, 75, will instead focus on his quest for the presidency in 2012.

“I felt it was better that I concentrate on one election,” Paul said. “It’s about that time when I should change tactics.”

His announcement will give enough time for anyone with aspirations for his seat to think about running, he said. Paul didn’t want to wait for filing in the 2012 primary to let people know he wasn’t seeking reelection.

“I didn’t want to hold off until in December,” he said. “I thought it shouldn’t be any later than now.”

The Facts needs to do The Math [see update -- they're correct].  Paul first won election to Congress in a 1976 special election, lost later that year, and then won again in 1978.  He’s served parts of 18 terms in the House, which adds up in this case to a little over 34 years when his current term expires.

Paul either really wants to retire or really thinks that he’s on the cusp of a major upset in the GOP primary.  I’ll assume that he has a somewhat realistic view of his prospects in this primary, where he might wind up as the runner-up among Texans if Rick Perry jumps into the race.  He’ll be 76 years old next month, and with his son in the Senate, Paul may feel comfortable with retirement after one last national campaign that puts his somewhat erratic libertarianism on the GOP presidential agenda for a second straight cycle.  If he’s not taking a realistic view of his chances, then perhaps he believes that the only thing that held him back from besting John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee in any 2008 primary was his simultaneous campaign for re-election.  If so, then he really needs this retirement.

Of course, Paul could change his mind before the end of the year, but after this kind of announcement, it would be hard to sell even to the adoring voters in his district.  Looks like the end of the road for the man best known for contrarian votes on meaningless resolutions and for railing against government spending while garnering pork for his constituents.

Update: Time for me to do The Math.  The newspaper has it right; Paul retired from the House in 1984 to run for President, and didn’t return until 1997.

Good riddance to the crazy uncle who lives in the attic and his army of cultists who spam every poll and blog that mentions his name.

Hilts on July 12, 2011 at 1:50 PM

Ahh, the Ron Paul cultists are out in force, I see!

Yes, it’s hypocrisy on the earmarks, because he BRAGS about voting against those bills, when he knows they will pass, and he will get the pork for his district. Magic? No. Dishonest and hypocritical.

One quote of him saying that the government didn’t orchestrate 9/11 doesn’t cut it either. He associates with well known truthers and anti-war wackos…see: Alex Jones and Lew Rockwell. He blames the United States for the terrorist attacks. He may not say that outright, but he implies it very strongly. And after TWO investigations into 9/11, he still said he wanted more investigations, denying that a legitmate one had happened.

He does not have a grasp on reality. He thinks the world is a fantasyland, where we can just make friends with everyone and they won’t bother us. He would do nothing to defend this country but wait around for our enemies to attack us here on our soil. No thanks to suicidal foreign policy. He’s crazy and so are his “followers.”

JannyMae on July 12, 2011 at 1:51 PM

Really?

Well, where I come from, it is considered bad form to question an interlocutor’s references, without providing some of your own. So, perhaps you can provide one quote where RP claims the government did orchestrate 9/11?

Or admit that you cannot.

JohnGalt23 on July 12, 2011 at 1:54 PM

He might pull a Ross Perot.

Schadenfreude on July 12, 2011 at 1:34 PM

He could.

Other than Palin, he’s probably the only politician in America right now that could poll ~10-15% of the national vote running third party. Maybe more if someone like Romney or Huntsman is the GOP candidate and Obama decides to invade Syria or something.

AUH2O on July 12, 2011 at 1:58 PM

Ronbots out in full force I see.

Fact is, he has sucked up 31 Billion+ in pork, which due to base-line budgeting and interest, is costing the American taxpayers now and into the future hundreds of billions – while claiming to be a fiscal conservative?

His lies and hypocrisy are breathtaking. That he somehow managed to build a cult of personality so blind as to have a never ending pool of fools to defend him, is actually pretty scary.

Now he’s retiring, but before he goes he’s going to do as much damage to the republican party as possible this election cycle – typical.

Rebar on July 12, 2011 at 1:59 PM

Ed, you’re a moron. I can’t believe I used to read Captain’s Quarters.

Ron Paul’s ideas are the only hope for this country, and luckily, they are ringing true amongst the younger generation.

Keep on chugging along, Ed. Support the banking cartel, support the military-industrial complex, continue to believe in the communistic monetary system that causes our boom-bust cycle.

Why is it do you think Lenin and Marx said this:

“[One of the basic planks of socialism is] centralization of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly.” – Karl Marx

“The establishment of a central bank is 90% of communizing [socializing] a country.” – Vladimir Lenin

Maybe it’s because you’re an idiot.

iamse7en on July 12, 2011 at 2:00 PM

Good riddance…can he convince Dennis Kucinich to retire with him?

There may be another reason for his “retirement” from the House–Texas will gain 5 seats in the next re-districting, and Paul’s new district might not be as tolerant to his kookiness, where a more “conventional” Republican could hold the seat.

DethMetalCookieMonst on July 12, 2011 at 2:10 PM

Why is it that the biggest argument against Ron Paul is always some version of “He and his supporters are crazy”? Have you become the left, with their “right-wing nutjobs” spin? Try criticizing his actual platform. It makes a more compelling argument.

Ditto!

He also is the ONLY GOP candidate to regularly get presidential ‘endorsements’ from neo-nazi groups and Holocaust ‘revisionist’ organizations.

JohnGalt23 on July 12, 2011 at 2:26 PM

And by one of the few very accurate pollsters out there, too. This is a poll of “definite caucus goers” so it should be a good.

AUH2O on July 12, 2011 at 2:32 PM

Endorsements mean nothing about a candidate. I could form a Revisionist Mormon death-cult today and endorse Mitt Romney. Would that someday detract from his qualities as a candidate?

Knee walking drunk in a whorehouse in Tampico.

katy the mean old lady on July 12, 2011 at 2:43 PM

He’s not very popular in his district, the 3 Tea Party candidates who ran against him last time had a combined $100k and still got over 30% of the Primary vote.

I wonder if one of them has serious financial backing this time around and Paul sees writing on wall…or he’s just old and wants to retire or more likely he’s deranged enough to think he could win.

jnelchef on July 12, 2011 at 4:05 PM

If you were wondering, Paul’s closest associate and ally and all round disgraceful loon: Lew Rockwell has a posting up:

http://www.lewrockwell.com/politicaltheatre/2011/07/ron-paul-will-not-run-for-congress-again/

It appears Paul is delusional enough to think he will win the Presidency.

Key excerpt from LRC:

and the deadly new district the Republicans have placed him in.

So there’s your answer as to why he’s not running.

jp on July 12, 2011 at 4:12 PM

On January 9, Ron Paul addressed Congress to voice his opposition to a House resolution expressing strong support for Israel in its invasion of Gaza, and branding Hamas as a terrorist organization. Ron Paul called for American neutrality in conflicts that have nothing to do with the United States.

That, right there, is what makes Ron Paul unfit, not only as presidential material, but congressional material as well.

Good Riddance

indeed and its just the one of many many such instances from him.

So Paul is an expert in fiscal matters, more than anyone else is qualified to do in Congress, and we’re facing a fiscal crisis, and yet folks on here want to prop up some faux social con or big government conservative.

Awesome.

Nice to see that you couldn’t refute any of my other points.

I rest my case.

Just going on Alex Jones’ program and demanding more investigations into 9/11 was all I needed to see of Ron Paul. Your attempt at demeaning me for no reason, by quote mining is duly noted, as is your dishonesty.

Says you. What has he done in Congress to convince me that he would solve our fiscal crisis? Absolutely nothing. But our fiscal crisis won’t mean jack schitt after he gets through dismantling our national defense.

I’ll take that as: “No, JohnGalt23, I can’t provide you with a Ron Paul quote in which he blames the US Government for 9/11″.

Which is about what I expected.

Well, it would seem we have a case where one side is able to produce evidence against the claim that Ron Paul is a 9/11 Truther, and one side which is unable to produce evidence in support of that claim.

So, which side to believe? Hmmmmmmm…..
