Obamateurism of the Day; Update: Video added

posted at 8:05 am on July 11, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

In poker, when an opponent develops a predictable signal, it’s called a tell.  Barack Obama has developed a tell, and as Jim Geraghty discovers, it’s when he’s telling everyone around them how to act.  In this case, though, Obama may have broken a speed record this time:

President Obama, yesterday: “I’ve asked leaders of both parties and both houses of Congress to come here to the White House on Thursday so we can build on the work that’s already been done and drive towards a final agreement.  It’s my hope that everybody is going to leave their ultimatums at the door, that we’ll all leave our political rhetoric at the door.”

President Obama, today: “The debt ceiling should not be something that is used as a gun against the heads of the American people to extract tax breaks for corporate jet owners, for oil and gas companies that are making billions of dollars because the price of gasoline has gone up so high.”

You know, when people described Obama as exceptional, this isn’t quite what we thought they meant.

Update: Jeff Dobbs puts it to video:

More doorbell!

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The thing about Obama is that he has taken the classic FDR line (which I am featuring here in its entirety), “So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” and twisted it to a level that is completely beyond comprehension.

FDR said we should not live in fear, but Obama would rather we be engulfed by it! This is why he uses the kind of fear-mongering political rhetoric that I happen to find the most repulsive.

And as for him saying we shouldn’t be using that type of rhetoric the one day and then he himself uses it the next day, what else is new?

pilamaye on July 11, 2011 at 8:30 AM

It was so much easier to ‘get things done’ in Chicago, wasn’t it chump?

BO is so far out of his element that it’s excruciating to watch him attempt to function on the national stage. It’s as though he hasn’t figured out where he is, and his only ‘happy places’ are the golf course and flying around in AF1 being chauffeured to yet another campaign spot at our expense.

He’s good at telling others what to do, so perhaps he should take his own advice, get in the back seat and shut up.

Life imitates the Twilight Zone. Obama is the monster-child in this episode: “It’s a Good Life.”

“Just by using his mind he took away the automobiles, the electricity, the machines, because they displeased him. And he moved an entire community back into the Dark Ages.” Wish him into the cornfield in 2012.

During a 75-minute session Sunday at the White House, Obama told the congressional leaders that America is not a “banana republic,” so he won’t agree to several months-long debt increases that raise fears of a default, according to two Democratic officials familiar with the meeting.

He tells us that what we need is for corporations to increase hiring. Ok, so far so good.

And while he’s saying that he tells the corporations to sacrifice for the good of everyone. Not so good. Corporations do the best good for everyone when they are successful. When they think you are going to force them to sacrifice, they can’t increase hiring.

But He knows all this, and doesn’t care. Power comes from dependency, and that is the foundation of every move he makes.

Obama, Hypocrite Of The Year!
It’s hypocrisy because he said to leave political rhetoric at the door, except about holding guns to folks’ heads.
And it’s hypocrisy because Obama gave us the tax breaks for corporate jet owners in that $800 billion ‘stimulus’ that didn’t stimulate anything but paybacks for political allies.
And it’s hypocrisy because it’s largely his fault oil is so expensive.
And it’s hypocrisy because Obama has been totally absent from budget talks for months, only inserting himself at the last minute.

Power comes from dependency, and that is the foundation of every move he Obama and every liberal progressive “leader” makes.

Freelancer on July 11, 2011 at 9:04 AM

It is the very foundation of this Democratic Party to breed dependency to control the masses. Pelosi, Reid, and the parasitic left have embraced this system for decades, pretending to lift the poor and downtrodden up with nothing but rhetoric and empty promises—(see the “affordable” health care act)—spending recklessly while praying for a massive tax increase to balance their insanity.

a gun against the heads of the American people

Civil. Rhetoric.

The media and democrats want us to focus on the nation’s “caustic political climate” after the tragedy yesterday. Maybe they should start with President Obama.
He may be the worst offender.

Obama: “They Bring a Knife…We Bring a Gun”
Obama to His Followers: “Get in Their Faces!”
Obama on ACORN Mobs: “I don’t want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry! I’m angry!”
Obama to His Mercenary Army: “Hit Back Twice As Hard”
Obama on the private sector: “We talk to these folks… so I know whose ass to kick.“
Obama to voters: Republican victory would mean “hand to hand combat”
Obama to lib supporters: “It’s time to Fight for it.”
Obama to Latino supporters: “Punish your enemies.”
Obama to democrats: “I’m itching for a fight.”

If the media really wants to improve the “caustic political climate” they may want to start at the White House.

The debt ceiling should not be something that is used as a gun against the heads of the American people to extract tax breaks for corporate jet owners, for oil and gas companies that are making billions of dollars because the price of gasoline has gone up so high.

47% of Americans don’t pay income tax and the ‘rich’ already pay the lion share of taxes…but it’s never enough for these socialists. They don’t care what happens to the private sector – their top priority is growing government.

Anyone who would propose tax increases especially in the economic downturn we are in and given our rate of unemployment is nuts and cannot be compromised with. Whether through intent or ignorance they are trying to ruin the country.

gwelf on July 11, 2011 at 11:01 AM

Obama’s novel idea: Tax and spend!

Yeah – that’ll work?

How about this – we return to ‘Clintonian’ levels of taxation and spending? How does that sound as a compromise?

gwelf on July 11, 2011 at 11:03 AM

The debt ceiling should not be something that is used as a gun against the heads of the American people to extract tax breaks for corporate jet owners, for oil and gas companies that are making billions of dollars because the price of gasoline has gone up so high.

When a liberal hears that profit is being made they think that something unjust or inequitable is going on and the government needs to transfer it to those ‘more deserving’.

When a conservative hears that profit is being made they think that jobs are being provided, families supported and that people in the market are getting a product or service they value (e.g., everyone is happy).

Previous record was President George W Bush’s much criticized and far less costly 2005 inaugural. A comparably paltry 300 private planes.

Once again proving that when compared with the left’s perception of everybody else’s intelligence, President Obama IS brilliant.

Too bad they have to delude themselves into thinking everybody else is a drooling moron to elevate him to such a stature.
