Obama’s reaction to jobs report: More of the same deflection

posted at 12:25 pm on July 8, 2011 by Tina Korbe

President Barack Obama still refuses to take any responsibility for delayed action on the budget, to acknowledge that, perhaps, he could have led differently (and more effectively) on this issue. This morning, when he gave his brief reaction to today’s dismal jobs report, he implied he has been doing everything possible to strengthen the economy and again deflected blame to Congress, calling on the House and Senate to take action “right now” to alleviate the economic hardship of millions of Americans.

“The economic challenges that we face weren’t created overnight and they’re not going to be solved overnight, but the American people expect us to act on every good idea that’s out there,” Obama said.

The president says he knows that includes “rein[ing] in our deficits and learn[ing] to live within our means” and he again praised the deficit reduction meeting he hosted yesterday, but he gave Congress little to no credit for driving the debt ceiling debate.

“We had a good meeting yesterday … but real differences remain,” the president said. “We agreed to meet back here on Sunday. … The sooner the markets know that the debt ceiling will have been raised, the sooner we have a plan to deal with our debt and deficit, the sooner we give businesses the certainty they need to grow and hire. … I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work over the next several weeks and next several months.”

He’s right, of course, but it all just seems like “too little, too late,” given how perseveringly Republicans in Congress have clamored for a concrete plan from Democrats.

The president also again disingenuously mentioned various stalled free trade agreements as though Congress has been the only hold-up, when the president procrastinated sending the agreements to Congress in the first place. He even included a jab at state budget cuts — citing those cuts among reasons unemployment is up.

Update: WSJ has the full transcript of the president’s comments.

Lon, Obama has the real long form BC. He just frogged the Internet version up to get folks all worked up. He did the same thing with the short form version. Think one step ahead.

cmsinaz on July 8, 2011 at 1:07 PM

If the RNC implodes…their won’t be a GOP candidate because there will be no money there…Romney would be more of an Independent candidate.

Also, DO NOT rule out that Obama is going to be unchallenged in his primary…Hillary still wants to be President and her SoS role has made her well positioned to run again.

LordMaximus on July 8, 2011 at 1:05 PM

Again if we had two people running that were both considered conservative – they would split the vote ensuring that Obama wins. It’s a pipe dream that Hillary is going to challenge him.

Like I said before – Minnesota had two candidates on the conservative side run in the last two big elections and split the vote. You have the “third party” to thank for ObamaCare because of Dean Barkley hadn’t run – Coleman would have been elected.

sandee on July 8, 2011 at 12:37 PM

Not necessarily. The Republicans emerged as a third-party, splitting from the Whigs after Whig leadership wouldn’t move faster on the abolitionist platform. The Whig leadership wanted to take a slow pace and kept conceding to their opponents. The Republicans not only emerged as a third-party, but won the Presidency with President Lincoln.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it…

LordMaximus on July 8, 2011 at 12:31 PM

If that happens and we get four more years of President Ozymandias, our very own Hugo Chavez, I’m blaming the tea party. They know Obama’s wrong for this country and they let it happen when we had a way to stop it. They can hide behind the “we’re doing this for our country” mantra all they want. But if they were really doing this for the country, they would focus on getting rid of Obama first then clean up the rest of the crap after he’s gone.

They’ve made good progress so far, why take four steps back because of a temper tantrum?

rplat on July 8, 2011 at 1:17 PM

Right. He’s completely redefined a radio bandwidth and format. He’s been attacked by two political parties, and raising impressive amounts of money behind the scenes for worthwhile charitible causes, thanks to the generosity of his 20 – 30 million daily listerns, but he’s nothing but a salesman?

kingsjester on July 8, 2011 at 12:59 PM

Yes. He is. He’s working a gimmick, just like a lot of media figures do. Take Bill O’Reilly, for example, and his whole “I’m looking out for YOU, America” schtick.

Maybe he buys into the gimmick a little more than someone like BOR, but it’s still a gimmick. Rush knows his audience. His audience isn’t interested in hearing, “Mitt Romney is actually a pretty strong candidate to run against Obama”, they want “grr! True Conservatives or we riot!” His audience doesn’t want to hear, “Maybe a deal on the debt ceiling would be appropriate, if it’s good enough”, they want “no deal! EVER!!!”

So, he’s giving you that.

Congratulations, you just put in words the very temper tantrums I’m talking about. You don’t think the rest of us are frustrated? I’ll tell you I am. But I recgonize the real threat to our country’s future and that the right step in getting our country back to thump his ass out of the White House in a loud manner, in a way that will get everyone’s attention. But your path will lead to the end of the country because you’ll give him the thing he wants most, a blank check. That’s what four more years is.

The fact of the matter is that the Tea Party will render themselves obsolete if this happens. And you guys will be as much to blame for the end of the country as Obama because you could have help prevent it and chose not to for ideology. You can call it whatever you want, but face it, the tea party is embracing what has become an ideology. It’s not about the country anymore with them. They’re no better than the Democrats with the “our way or the highway” mentality.

And when inauguration day happens in 2013 and we see Obama dancing with that harpy he calls a wife, I’m gonna rub your face in it like a puppy that took a crap on the new carpet. You’re going to be just as responsible, and I will make sure you are held equally as accountable.

Teflon is just carbon difloride in long chains. Basically, just fat with Florine instead of Hydrogen. Do you mean soot?
Anyway, you get it to stick to the pan by ruffening the surface so that has something to mechanically hold on too. PTFE is a fairly stif plastic.

Questions on the debt ceiling crisis that Americans would like to have answered by President Barack Obama:

Ahhh, Mr. President, why did you get zero votes on your budget proposal in the Senate?

Uhhh, Why Mr. President did you fail to obey the law for three years and not present a proposal for the Social Security funding shortfall reported by the S.S trustees?

Ummm, Mr. President, Why did you throw your own deficit commission’s recommendation into the circular file? Couldn’t we have avoided this crisis with the debt ceiling if you had just exhibited some leadership on this six months ago? Oh yeah, and how much did that exercise cost the taxpayers?

Uhhh, Mr. President, Why did you recently propose more stimulus and spending and then say you wanted to cut 4 trillion from the budget? Which position are you really in favor of, or did you just change your mind? And will you change your mind again, or are you just posturing for political effect?

Uhh, Mr. President, are you intentionally trying to confuse the American people with all of this switching back and forth and convening commissions that you don’t intend to follow and pointing fingers at people who aren’t responsible for your failures or are you just not up to the job? Please answer this particular question before November 2012.
